Introduction
2012 was the second year of the Marek Edelman Dialogue
Center in Łódź but it was the first one when we operated
for full 12 months. However, like last year, we had only the
office at Plac Wolności. Our future building at Wojska Polskiego St. in the Survivors' Park is under construction and
has not been made available to us yet. However, we have,
in collaboration with other partners and various institutions in Łódź and elsewhere, organized 27 events, comprising of 146 individual initiatives. The most important and
significant activity in 2012 was the international cultural
and educational project “Szpera '42”, which involved
months of work with young people under the motto “Give
me your children”, a series of meetings, lectures, screenings and exhibitions concerning events of 1942 in the
ghetto, as well as a theatrical project in the public space
of the Bałuty district carried out jointly with the Chorea
Theatre and Israeli artists under the direction of Ruthie
Osterman.
Due to its extensiveness (9 days), as well as a special municipal subsidy, another very important project was also
the Łódź of Four Cultures festival – Generations 2012, organized by the Dialogue Center for the second time. We
were also present abroad: in the USA, Israel, France,
Lithuania and Ukraine: in Vilnius, Lviv, Krakow and Warsaw
the exhibition “Artur Szyk – Man of Dialogue” was presented.
Many of the projects started in 2012 will continue in 2013,
including the Four Cultures Quartet composed of musicians
from Poland, Russia, Germany and Israel.
This report recapitulates our activities in 2012.

70Th ANNivERSARy of ThE GyPSy CAMP
In November 1941, within the Łódź ghetto, the so-called Gypsy
camp was established. In an area of 0.019 sq km, more than
5,000 Gypsies - Roma and Sinti were imprsioned, deported by
the Germans from Burgenland in Austria. On January 5, 1942,
the Nazis began deportations to the extermination camp at
Chełmno on the Ner. Within one week, the Gypsy camp was
liquidated. Not a single person survived.
On the 70th anniversary of these events, the Marek Edelman Dialogue Center organized a two-day commemoration, attended
by representatives of the Embassy of Austria, the Austrian Cultural Forum, the City Hall and the Jewish Community in Łódź.
On the Cemetery wall, by the entrance gate a plaque sponsored by the Embassy of Austria was unveiled. This plaque
commemorates the Roma and Sinti deported in 1941 to the
Litzmannstadt Ghetto and murdered five months later, in January 1942, in the extermination camp at Chełmno on the Ner.
On the occasion of the 69th anniversary of the Warsaw Ghetto
Uprising, at the Mirror Hall of the Museum of the City of Łódź,
the Marek Edelman Dialogue Center organized a meeting
with Violetta Ozminkowski and Magdalena Olczak, authors of
a recently published biography of Marek Edelman, “The Doctor
and God”.
Secondary school students attended lessons devoted to the
figure of Marek Edelman, taught by Katarzyna Gucio and
Szymon Pawlak of the Marek Edelman Dialogue Center.

JEwiSh CuLTuRE DAyS
The second edition of the Days of Jewish Culture (and the first
under the name of Kulturalia) was held under the slogan “The
Old and the New- from shtetl to kibbutz”. The program included
lectures on important figures in contemporary Israel and the
recent history of this country. A lecture on the literature of Israel
was given by Israeli embassy spokesman and translator, Michał
Sobelman. A meeting dedicated to Yehuda Elberg, an Yiddishlanguage writer from Zgierz, was organized in the Litera bookstore. Participants of a cooking workshop learned about the
rules of kosher cooking and had the opportunity to taste the
dishes prepared according to traditional Jewish laws. Coaches
from the Skills Training Center organized a lecture and training
session devoted to the Israeli combat system Krav Maga. The
audience of our film project could see the two versions of the
classic dramaby Szymon An-ski “Dybbuk”, the first one from
1937, dir. M. Waszyński, one of the first full-length feature films
in Yiddish and the recording of the performance of Krzysztof
Warlikowski’s acclaimed stage adaptation from 2005, “The
Dybbuk. In-Between Worlds”. The days of Jewish Culture
conclude with a concert by the Klezmafour group, one of the
most recognized bands playing music inspired by Jewish tradition. Participants of the guided walk following the trail of the
Jewish Łódź learned about the history and culture of the former
inhabitants of the city. The walk was attended by over 150
people.

DNi GERMAN CuLTuRE DAyS
CoLoRfuL ToLERANCE
This year's Kulturalia cycle concluded with German Culture Days.
We presented an overview of Hans Weigartner’s films, such as
“White Noise” starring Daniel Brühl or “Free Reiner” with Moritz
Bleibtreu. The presentation was accompanied by a discussion
about the young German cinema. BARA-KAH Theatre and the
CINEMA PARADISO band performed “Nosferatu - Symphony of
Horror”, a multimedia spectacle with live music, giving the cult
film by Friedrich Wilhelm Murnau a new quality. At the DOM
club, the Łódź band Blisko Pola gave a performance, supporting
a German multi-instrumentalist Touchy Mob. Beer fans could
attend a lecture on beer: “Germany - Land of 7500 types of beer”,
after which they could taste the golden brew. The German
Culture Days concluded with a guided walk of the German Łódź,
which took place on land belonging formerly to the largest
German manufacturer Karl Wilhelm Scheibler. The walk, as well
as other events that promote German culture were also attended
by Dieter Reinl, cultural attaché of the German Embassy
in Poland. The German Culture Days were funded by the
Foundation for Polish-German Cooperation.
The Days of Culture - Kulturalia 2012 was accompanied by
a series of magnets depicting the well-known structures of the
four cultures of Łódź: Synagogue at Spacerowa St., the palace
of Anna Hertz-Poznańska, the New Market Square, Karol Scheibler's factory and the Alexei Nevsky Orthodox Church
at Kilinskiego Street.
12th edition of the annual Colorful Tolerance was held traditionally on the first day of spring, March 21. In 2012, the majority
of events focused on Księży Młyn. At the Museum of Cinematography, the conclusion of the competition: MY RIGHTS HUMAN
RIGHTS was held, as well as a screening of films about tolerance
and human rights. As usual, offensive graffiti on the walls of the
Grohman’s House at Targowa St. was painted by elementary
school children along with representatives of Łódź authorities.
On March 27, as a part of the Colorful Tolerance, at the Poleski
Arts Centre, a workshop was held “MULTICULTURAL POLAND?
Are we ready to once again become a multicultural society?”
co-organized by SIETAR POLAND.
Colorful Tolerance, which is opposed to intolerance, xenophobia
and vandalism, was born in 2000. The originator of the action
is Joanna Podolska along with members of the Institute of
Tolerance, which organized the event until 2010. Initially, the
painting over of offensive inscriptions on the walls in the streets
of Łódź involved children and young people from primary and
secondary schools. Currently, we are hoping that Colorful
Tolerance is also attended by residents of the city, authorities
and journalists. In 2012, the action was accompanied by
educational activities in schools, devoted to the subject of tolerance. The Marek Edelman Dialogue Center has been the organizer of the event since 2011.

The second edition of the Łódź of For Cultures Festival organized
by the Dialogue Center was hel dunder the motto „Generations”.
Along with several curators responsible for various disciplines
of art (Józef Robakowski for visual arts, Lech Dzierżanowski for
music event, Tomasz Majewski for film, Bogdan Tosza for literature and theatre), we tried to find and show to the residents of
Łódź places with fascinating history, such as the Pinkus House
at the corner of Kościuszki Av. and Zielona St., frequented by the
artistic boheme of the Jewish Łódź, or the underground cathedral – cisterns for potable water in Stoki, where live music was
performed for the first time.
Combining different fields of art and artists of different generations, we tried to make Łódź once again a multicultural, multinational and multigenerational city. We went to basements
and climbed onto rooftops. We met in a 100-year-old hotel, in

80-year-old water cisterns, but also in places that were created
much later, such as the Łódź Film Centre or the Dom Club. One
of the figures discussed in Łódź in 2012 was Joseph Roth,
Polish-speaking writer of Jewish origin who was born on the
eastern fringe of the Austro-Hungarian Empire, whose debut
novel, published in a Frankfurt newspaper, was set about the
interwar Łódź. The project “Joseph Roth” prepared in collaboration with the Nowy Theater is a play based on the novel “Hotel
Savoy” (performed at the Savoy Hotel building in Łódź, which
in 2012 celebrated its one hundredth birthday). The historic building also housed screenings of films based on the novel by Roth,
literary meetings devoted to his work, lectures, and exhibitions.
The Łódź of Four Cultures – generations 2012 festival comprised
also od three large exhibitions. Their curators were outstanding
artists of three generations. “Eastern Front” at the “Atlas Sztuki
Gallery was developed by Józef Robakowski, the curator of
“Deconstructing Utopia” at the City Art Gallery was Wojciech

Leder, while the exhibition “Estern Express” in the Pinkus House
was designed by Artur Chrzanowski. This juxtaposition allowed
us to see the impact of Russian avant’garde artist had on
contemporary art of different generations.
We also invited the residents of Łódź to the films by Max and
Marcel Ophüls – father and son, whose oeuvre is a place of dialogue of Jewish, Germanm French, American and Russian
culture. Some of these titles were shown in Poland for the very
first time.
One of the flagship music productions was the Four Cultures
Quarter, comprised of musicians from Poland, Germany, Israel
and Russia. The quartet performed in emptied potable water
cisterns in Stoki, becoming a nationally important media event.
Although the concert itself could only be attended by special

composers of the twentieth century, the fates of whose interlaces with each other and shows a broad plan of the dangers of
the twentieth century (Nazism, Communism) against the
backdrop of the Jewish issues. Tansman's family came from
Russia to Łódź, where the future composer was born. Weinberg’s
entire adult life was spent in Moscow, but he considered himself

Całe swe serce, duszę i świętą naukę poświęcił swemu ludowi i swej świętej Torze,
Sądząc Izrael miarą słuszną i sądem pokoju przez ponad siedemdziesiąt lat.
W duchu Pańskim znosił cierpienia ludu swego, jednostek i ogółu, tocząc wojny rozległe,
By zło gęstniejące oddalić i przed wrogami go obronić, mury Tory wzmacniając.

Trzy razy próbie był poddany i odwrócił Pan śmierć, a zaraza się zatrzymała.
W swej sprawiedliwości sieroty i wdowy wspierał, dla ubogich zawsze był podporą.

Promotion has a very important place

are very popular, not only among

Visual identification of the Marek Edelman Dialogue Centre in
2012, was based on a photograph of the Liberty Square, because
it is at that address that the temporary office of the institution
is currently located. Over the years, we have gone from identification representing an overview of the Liberty Square to general identification, which will be fitting both during the
transition period (i.e. at the headquarters at Liberty Square 5),
and after moving to our new office at Wojska Polskiego St.
Based on some models of the identification following materials
were prepared: bags, notebooks, folders for documents, business cards, website and newsletter, bookmarks (2 types) and
pins.
Pins with the image of Marek Edelman
The figure of the patron of the Dialogue Center generates great
interest, particularly among the young people participating in
our projects. However, the pins were also popular among adult
participants of the ceremony to mark the 69th anniversary of
the outbreak of the uprising in the Warsaw ghetto.
