Materiał i metody. Wnioski. Odpowiedź SA (ΔSA) bardzo zależy od SA1. Startujące kobiety wykazały większą wewnątrzosobniczą zmienność ΔSA i ΔPF. Summary 5163 2 0 26 is c Word count: Tables: Figures: References: y is - for pe Background. This study aims to examine state of anxiety (SA) and perception of fatigue (PF) among rowers during regatta (8 km) played at the beginning and in the end of rowing competitive season. Material and methods. 20 males and 20 females, national-level senior rovers participated on March and on October in a regatta on distance of 8 km. Using State-Trait Anxiety Inventory, anxiety levels were studied one hour prior to races (SA1) and 5 minutes following exertion (SA2). Post-exertion (+5 min) perception of fatigue (PF) was rated by means a visual analog scale. Results. No significant differences were fund in means of SA1 and SA2 in both sexes examined on March and October. No sex-related differences occurred in SA1 and SA2, and PF in both terms. Analysis of individual SA responses to regatta highlighted association between SA1 and ΔSA in males and females. Each competitor was assigned to the pattern L (of low pre-effort anxiety) when his/her SA1≤SA2, and to the pastern H (of high pre-effort anxiety) when his/her SA1>SA2. As a lack of individual difference between SA1 and SA2 and we assumed criteria ΔSA≤2, whereas existence of individual difference, when ΔSA>2. Significant differences between mean SA1 and mean SA2 were found for subgroups L and H in both sexes. Subgroups L demonstrated rise of SA or lack of change, while SA in subgroups H SA dropped after regatta. Comparing the affective (SA) and perceptual (PF) responses to regatta played on spring and autumn, the higher reproducibility of these variables were found among males. Conclusions. The response of SA (ΔSA) strongly depends on SA1. Females exhibited the higher within-subject variability of ΔSA and ΔPF. op This copy is for personal use only - distribution prohibited. Najczęściej badanym parametrem u wykonujących wysiłek jest stan lęku (SA) mierzony przed wysiłkiem i w czasie powysiłkowej restytucji. Większość tych badań przeprowadzono wśród kobiet i mężczyzn wykonujących wysiłki o charakterze siłowym [1-6]. Wyniki ujawniły zależności pomiędzy afektywnymi odpowiedziami a charakterystyką wysiłku. The impact of exercises of various mode, intensity and duration on mood state in mentally ill patients, healthy untrained subjects and athletes is still interesting topic among psychologists. The most frequent psychometric parameter examined in exercising subjects is state anxiety (SA), measured prior and during post-effort recovery. Majority of these studies carried out among male or female subjects undergoing resistance exercises [1-6]. The results revealed the relationships between affective responses and characteristics of effort. Exercises of moderate intensity brought about decrease of SA, while directly following vigorous effort SA was higher than that prior to event, however, during 1h recovery it significantly and progressively dropped. That characteristic time course of exercise SA, and the other components of mood state (confusion, vigor, tension, fatigue, depression, anger) as well as effort sense (RPE) are parallel sometimes with changes in physiological parameters (hart rate, blood lactate, and so-called “stress hormones”) over the time [7-10]. Pre-and post-competition state anxiety (SA) or perception of fatigue (PF) following competition have been explored comprehensively in different sport events. However, these parameters were not examined simultaneously during a competition. The more missing data on the relationships between SA and PE during rowing competition. This study was undertaken to examine anxiety and perception of fatigue during regatta in relation to sex and season among competitive rowers. ly - dis tr ibu tio np roh ibit ed . Background on This copy is for personal use only - distribution prohibited. - Wstęp Senior rowers, twenty males (aged 24.8±2.5 ys) and females (22.4±1.8 ys) were examined during their two compulsory regatta on distance of 8 km at the beginning (March) and on the end (October) of an annual competitive rowing season. State Anxiety was studied one hour prior to the races (SA1) and 5 minutes following exertions (SA2) using State Anxiety Inventory [10]. Post-exertion perception of fatigue (PF) was rated together with SA, by means a visual analog scale covering range of self-reported fatigue from somewhat fatigued (10 scores) to completely exhausted (100 scores). After calculations separately for all males (n=20) and all females (n=20), analysis of individual changes in SA and PF was performed. That analysis of individual SA responses to regatta highlighted association between SA1 and ΔSA in males and females. Based on direction of SA changes and initial SA, each competitor was assigned to the pattern L (of low pre-competition anxiety) when his/her SA behavior met the criteria SA1≤SA2. Each subject of pastern H (of high precompetition anxiety) demonstrated decreased anxiety after effort (SA1>SA2). As a lack of individual difference between SA1 and SA2 we assumed following criteria ΔSA≤2, while ΔSA>2 was considered as a differ between pre and post-regatta state. Differences between SA1 and SA2 in males and females competing on March and October were examined using two-way analysis of variance (2 sexes x four repeated measures) ANOWA. Stan lęku badano godzinę przed wyścigiem (SA1) i 5 minut po jego ukończeniu (SA2), stosując Inwentarz Cechy-Stanu Lęku (polska wersja) [10]. Powysiłkową percepcję wysiłku (PF) oceniono za pomocą wizualnej, analogowej, liniowej skali, obejmującej zakres deklarowanego zmęczenia, wyrażony w punktach – od nieco zmęczony (10) do całkowicie wyczerpany (100). Po obliczeniach wykonanych na grupie mężczyzn (n=20) i kobiet (n=20), przeprowadzono analizę indywidualnych zmian SA i PF. Analiza tych danych ujawniła u kobiet i mężczyzn związek pomiędzy SA1 a ΔSA. W oparciu o to, startująca osoba była zaliczana do wzorca L (o niskim przedstartowym lęku), gdy zachowanie jej lęku spełniało kryterium SA1≤SA2SA1. Wzorzec H (osoby o wysokim przedstartowym lęku) spełniał kryterium SA1>SA2. Brak indywidualnej różnicy pomiędzy SA1 a SA2 określa kryterium ΔSA≤2, podczas gdy nierówność ΔSA>2 potwierdza istnienie indywidualnej różnicy pomiędzy przed- i postartowym lękiem. Różnice pomiędzy średnimi wartościami SA1 i SA2 u kobiet i mężczyzn startujących w marcu i październiku analizowano stosując dwukierunkową analizę wariancji ANOVA (dwie płcie x 4 powtarzane pomiary). Number of cases when SA1 did not differ from SA2 (see the criteria in Material and methods) were 3-4 in males and females in both terms. Thus, taking into account total number of observation (n=80), (40 subjects x 2 terms), SA responses (ΔSA) correlated negatively (r=-0.678, p<0.001) with SA1. The relative between-subject variations (CV%) of SA were somewhat lower in male rowers. In spring and autumn, in males CV% of SA1 were 22 and 16%, and of SA2 were 19.1 and 14.1%. In females examined on spring and autumn, these variables for SA1 were 28 and 22%, and for SA2 were 31 and 22% respectively. The similar sex-related trends concerned repeatability of SA responses (rise or drop) were found on spring and autumn regattas. About 80% of males (n=16) and 60% of females (n=12) demonstrated the same patterns behavior of SA response during spring and autumn competition. PF did not vary by sex or term of competition. However, PF values on spring correlated significantly with those recorder on autumn, among 20 males (r=0.585, p<0.01), and 20 females (r=0.438, p<0.05). The higher correlation in males confirms the higher extent of repeatability of PF in that group. Dyskusja Discussion se on There were no sex-related differences in SA, in both terms. That is opposite to the results of our earlier study carried out among junior rowers examined prior to exhaustive exercise-test. That study revealed higher mean state anxiety and cortisol level in females [11]. On the other hand Bartholomev [12] reported rise of SA in response to moderate- and high-intensive resistance exercises in males but not in females. However, one may suspect, that those gender differences in SA might be result of relative lower exercise intensity undergone by females, since the intensity of exercises were the functions of perceived exertions for both sexes. The results of our study prone us to deliberations, whether the type of SA behavior (pattern L or H) examined under a stressful condition is stable, and will be representative for individuals. That question merits further investigations. The scientific literature does not provide any data confirming reproducibility of anxiety responses to a competition among athletes, or to an exercise among healthy subjects. However, based on trait anxiety examination, that is utilized for distinguishing less from more anxious subjects, one may try to predict his/her magnitude of SA response to stressful event. The single studies on SA responses to exercises, which have been conducted by the others revealed, that direction of post-effort changes in SA depended on initial SA state. Raglin [13] have examined exerciser during 20-minute cycling with intensity of 70% VO2max and found, that SA changes were inversely related to the p values. Likewise, the inverse dependency between pre-exertion SA levels and SA responses to resistance exercises was confirmed by Focht [14]. Base on baseline SA the author stratifies each of examined subject into low or high anxiety subgroup. Hence, it is worth to stress, that results of is c op y is for pe rso na lu Nie było zależnych od płci różnic odnośnie lęku przed i po regatach w obu terminach. To przeczy wynikom naszych wcześniejszych badań przeprowadzonych wśród wioślarzy juniorów badanych przed laboratoryjnym, wyczerpującym testem wysiłkowym. Tamte badania wykazały wyższy stan lęku i stężenie kortyzolu u kobiet [11]. W oparciu o początkowe wartości SA autor zakwalifikował każdego z badanych do podgrupy nisko- lub Th This copy is for personal use only - distribution prohibited. Około 80% mężczyzn (n=16) i 60% kobiet (n=12) demonstrowało ten sam wzorzec zachowania odpowiedzi SA wiosną i jesienią. PF nie różnicował płci ani terminu zawodów. Jednak wartości PF zmierzone wiosną korelowały ze zmierzonymi jesienią, w grupie 20 mężczyzn (r=0,585, p<0,01) i 20 kobiet (r=0,438, p<0,05). Wyższa korelacja wśród mężczyzn potwierdza wyższy stopień powtarzalności PF w tej grupie. - This copy is for personal use only - distribution prohibited. Obmiński Z. i wsp., Lęk oraz percepcja zmęczenia u wioślarzy 263 se on ly - dis tr ibu tio np roh ibit ed . mentioned studies are in agreement with those obtained by us. The other study on pre-and post-competition anxiety carried out in females, who practice the two various team games revealed sport-related differences [15]. Handball players demonstrated higher anxiety and type of personality defined as Pattern A, whereas volleyball players were less anxious and of Pattern B. Moreover, mean pre- and post game anxiety were related to mean salivary cortisol levels in both teams. However, we are not sure still, whether assignation of athletes into the lower or higher anxious group, base on one observation of state anxiety is rational, since as was mentioned earlier, the extent of reproducibility of individual state of anxiety, even under the same conditions, was not studied. Our attention was focused on sex-related differences regarding the both, affective and perceptual responses to competition effort, since that topic excites researches, and it is not fully explained. Our study revealed, that about 80% of males (n=16) and 60% of females (n=12) demonstrated the same pattern L or H in the Spring and Autumn competition. Hence, in 20% of examined males (n=4) and 40% of females (n=8) their type of SA response recorded on Mach was not confirmed on October. The factors which was responsible for lack of reproducibility of the responses to the same type of stimulus among these 11 subjects is unknown. It is worth to put attention on almost two-fold higher number of the cases in females than in males, whose responses of SA to spring and autumn regatta were vary. One may speculate, that the higher variation SA responses in females may result in the effect of various menstrual cycle phases [16,17]. Besides phases of cycle, there are other factors mediating affective responses to vigorous effort, for instance, exercise- induced pain and its individual perception. It was reported induced by fatiguing isometric exercise pain perception and the extent of SA increment were not influenced by cycle phase [18], but higher perception of pain was associated with higher resting SA [19]. Unfortunately, information regarding end-exercise pain, especially low back, which is more frequent among rowers than in other athletes [20] as well as phase of cycle were not completed by us. It should be emphasized divergence of results provided by various authors and uncertainty of the general conclusions regarding the behavior of female athletes exposed to stressful events. For instance, lack of the relationships among pre-exercise SA, the other components of mood and salivary cortisol was noticed by us in our previous study conducted on female junior rowers [11], that is contradict with finding reported by others [15], who found cortisol levels related to competition anxiety, type of personality and final result of competition (winning/losing). However, the study did not confirm effect of type of personality on affective responses (anger, confusion, depression, fatigue, tension and vigor) to moderate, 1-hour effort and the type of personality [21]. Perception of fatigue (PF) and rating perceived exertion (RPE) are the complementary parameters commonly utilized during training or exercise-tests for rating body sensation following an effort. Percepcja zmęczenia (PF) i ocena odczuwanego wysiłku to komplementarne parametry, powszechnie stosowane w treningu i wysiłkach testowych, do samooceny reakcji organizmu po wysiłku. Na pierwszy rzut oka można - This copy is for personal use only - distribution prohibited. Obmiński Z. et al., Anxiety and fatigue perception in oarsmen 264 - rso na lu se on ly - dis tr ibu tio np roh ibit ed . when total workouts were the same for various exercises [22]. In our study rage of PF was unexpected wide (78-99 scores). At the first glance, one may suspect, that rower of lower PF (<90 scorers) was not fully engaged in rowing effort, and his/her rowing performances were below his/her physical possibilities. Such as suggestion may be, however, wrong, since effort sense is mediated by several factors of contradictory actions. Increased blood lactate and/or muscle pain enhance perceptual responses [23,24]. However, during long-lasting competitive exhaustive effort like marathon run or triathlon, blood lactate is not accumulated itself in blood. In spite of that, among competing ironman triathletes PRE has been elevating linearly after each event (swimming, cycling, running) [25]. RPE following endurance exercise may be mediated by the action of endogenous opiate system, which is responsible for releasing endorphins. These brain hormones have “rewarding” properties, causing euphoria, that may blunt pain perception and consequently RPE. That mechanism takes place among exercising rowers, who demonstrate improvement of pain tolerance [26]. Moreover, competitive rowers utilize various pain-coping strategies during training or regatta, that may partly explain lower pain perception than untrained [27] and lack of maximal perception of fatigue in examined by us competitors. The considerable variation of PF in our study might be result of various individual distribution of energy expenditure and/or realized power output throughout races. It means, that intensities of rowing (frequency of rowing strokes) were not constant for each individual over the whole distance (8 km). Some rowers may economize their energy recourses during the regatta to perform fast finish, that, however, requires overcoming his/her fatigue developing with time. The other strategy is to maintain intensity on the relative high, but stable level from the start to the finish, without spurt at the end of competition. That two various type of racing strategy (pacing) depends on physical fitness, strategy of opponents, length of distance to cover, development of fatigue and other factors [28-30]. It seems, that pacing strategy might be associated with PF. pe Wnioski y is for 1. Comparing the affective (SA) and perceptual (PF) responses to regatta played on spring and autumn, the higher extent of the reproducibility of these variables was found in males. - This copy is for personal use only - distribution prohibited.
