Mother’s Day Flower Sale
“The mother is appointed quardian of life...it is
here that the history of every life begins.”
John Paul II
Show how much you appreciate your
Mom by giving her a beautiful bouquet of
roses, carnations or mixed flowers. The
Legion of Mary of St. Ferdinand Parish will
sell Mother’s Day flowers after all Masses on
Saturday, May 7 and Sunday, May 8. Proceeds from the
sale will help support the life-saving work of The
Women’s Centers of Greater Chicagoland. The money
raised by this sale will be used to help teens and women
facing crisis pregnancies.
Each year, The Women’s Centers of Greater Chicagoland
provide compassionate counseling, social services referrals and material goods assistance to over 6000 women
who are facing crisis pregnancies. Since its founding in
1987, The Women’s Centers have helped save more than
28,000 babies from the threat of abortion. Please support
this worthy cause.

Mother: A Living Presence
The young mother set her foot on the path of life. “Is the
way long?” she asked. And her guide said, “Yes,
and the way is hard. And you will be old before
you reach the end of it. But the end will be better than the beginning.”
But the young mother was happy and she
would not believe that anything could be better
than these years. So she played with her children and gathered flowers for them along the
way and the sun shone on them and life was good
and the young mother cried, “Nothing will be livelier than this.”
Then night came and a storm, and the path was dark
and the children shook with fear and cold, and the mother
drew them close and covered them with her mantle and the
children said, “Mother we are not afraid for you are near
and no harm can come.” And the mother said, “This is better than the brightest of days, for I have taught my children
courage.”
And then morning came and there was a hill ahead and
the children climbed and grew weary and the mother was
weary, but at all times she said to her children, “A little
patience and we are there.” So the children climbed and
when they had reached the top, they said, “We could not
have done it without you, Mother.” And the mother, when
she lay down that night, looked up at the stars and said,
“This day is better than the last, for my children have
learned fortitude in the face of difficulty. Yesterday I gave
them courage. Today I have given them strength.”
And with the next day came strange
clouds, which darkened the earth — clouds of
war and hate and evil. The children groped and
stumbled, and the mother said, “Lift up your
eyes to the light!” And the children looked up
and saw above the clouds an Everlasting Glory,
and it guided them beyond the darkness. And that
night the mother said, “This is the best day of all,
for I have shown my children God.”
And the days went on, and the months and years, and
the mother grew old, and she was small and frail. But her
children were strong and tall and walked with courage.
And when the way was rough they lifted her, for she was
as light as a feather; and at last they came to a hill, and
beyond the hill they could see a shining road, and the
golden gates flung wide.
And the mother said, “I have reached the end of my
journey, and now I know that the end is better than the
beginning, for my children can walk alone, and their children after them.”
And the children said, “You will always walk with us,
Mother, even when you have gone through the gates.”
And they stood and watched her as she went on alone, and
the gates closed after her. And they said, “We cannot see
her, but she is with us. A mother like ours is more than a
memory — she is a living presence.”
God the Father, through his Son, the Virgin Mary’s Child,
has brought joy to all Christian mothers,
as they see the hope of eternal life shine on their children.
May all our mothers be blessed today.
Today they thank God for the gift of their children,
and today their children thank God for them.
May they be one in thanking God for this precious day. Amen

ON POLITICAL CARTOONS, POPES, AND PLACE KICKERS
Copyright 2005 by John B. Reynolds ([email protected])
The Chicago Tribune ran a couple of interesting political
cartoons two weeks ago, not long after Benedict XVI got
the nod. Maybe you saw them. The first is a reprint from
the Akron Beacon Journal and it shows a woman and a
priest standing together outside the Sistine Chapel with the
white smoke billowing forth and the DING DONG DING
of bells echoing across the sky. The woman asks the priest,
“How conservative is the new pope?” The priest replies,
“He considers adding bells to the white smoke high tech.”
OK. And the other shows two men – one a padre – again
outside the Sistine Chapel. Again, too, white smoke is billowing forth, but this time it forms a skywriting-like message high overhead: “FUHGEDDABOUDIT!” This
prompts the padre to comment: “I believe it’s intended for
the liberal Catholics in America.” Looks like the press, or
two cartoonists anyway – have got our number.
But c’mon. Did anybody really think that a new pope
would come in and turn the Catholic Church upside down?
That he would say yes to married priests? Yes to same-sex
marriages? Yes to abortions? Yes to women clergy? In the
Tribune’s Voice of the People section, one reader, profoundly disappointed with the Cardinals’ choice, wrote in to say
“…sometimes the ‘right-hand man’ is the wrong man.”
Other published letters supported the new pontiff. And me?
I lean to the right in church matters, but I would welcome
certain left-situated dialogue, particularly dialogue concern-
ing the role of women around the altar. Mostly though, I
agree with the prayer that an old friend, Fr. Tom, sent me
the other day: “…Thank you, God, for the gift of Pope
Benedict XVI and all that he will be as Pope. Thank you for
the plans you have for the future of our Catholic Church
and for the future of our whole world. And so we pray
again, in His Holy Name, Amen.”
Years back at a corporate function, I heard Joe
Theismann, former quarterback for the Washington
Redskins, give a talk about teamwork. Theismann told of a
pre-game encounter he once had with the team’s place kicker, Mark Mosley. Seems Mosley was primping – at length –
before a locker room mirror. Theismann kidded him about
this, telling Mosley that when he put on his helmet and took
the field, all the attention he had paid to his appearance
would be lost to the crowd anyway, to which Mosley
responded, “I’m proud of who I am, and I’m proud of who I
represent.” With the passing of John Paul and the election
of Benedict, Catholicism has been in the news for quite a
while. Media coverage is waning now, but perhaps its lingering focus has given us an opportunity to reflect upon
who we are as Catholics – sins and all – and upon who,
ultimately, we represent. Day-to-day and in an infinitely
larger context than Mosley first intended, let’s claim the
kicker’s words as our own.
