The next Religious Education (CCD) class will be held on Saturday morning,
January 8th, 2011.
Every Wednesday, all of us have the opportunity to
worship our Lord Jesus Christ in the presence of
the Blessed Sacrament that is exposed on our altar
from 8:30AM to 7PM. One of the benefits of Eucharistic adoration is that you determine how to spend
your time with Jesus. You can just sit in the presence of our Lord, pray your rosary, read your Bible, or do some
other spiritual reading.
Bless Your Door on Epiphany
The Gospel tells us that the magi
found Christ “on entering the
house.” The door to your home is
a holy threshold. You can bless
those who come and go out by
inscribing above the door in chalk
the first two numbers of the year
“20+C+M+B+11”- the last two
numbers of the year. Tradition tells us that the letters stand for the
names of the magi, Caspar, Melchior and Balthasar. Adolph Adam
points out that it may also mean “Christus mansionem benedicat”
or “May Christ bless this dwelling.” It is appropriate to bless your
door in January—janua means “door” and the first month is the
door to the new year.
After inscribing the doorway, say this prayer:
God of Bethlehem and Cana, God of Jordan’s leaping waters, in
baptism you bring us into your family. You wed us and embrace us
as your beloved. May we fill this place with kindness to one another, with hospitality to guests, and with abundant care for every
stranger. By the gentle light of a star, guide home all who seek you
on paths of faith, hope and love. Then we will join the angels in
proclaiming your praise: “GLORY IN HEAVEN AND PEACE ON
EARTH, NOW AND FOREVER. Amen.

Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,
At the beginning of his papacy, Pope
Benedict XVI said, “There is nothing
more beautiful than to be surprised by
the Gospel, by the encounter with
Christ. There is nothing more beautiful
than to know him and to speak to others
of our friendship with him. If we allow
Christ into our lives, we lose nothing, absolutely nothing
of what makes life free, beautiful and great. Only in this
friendship do we experience beauty and liberation.”
The experience of beauty transcends time and space and
points us to the very experience of God. Adoring the
Christ Child, we are drawn by the beauty of what we see
in front of us to the God we cannot see, but whom we
experience if we allow ourselves to follow the path
along which beauty will lead us. Jesus is the standard for
all that is beautiful. St. Augustine wrote of “Beauty ever
ancient ever new,” who makes the human spirit restless
until it rests in God forever. Our experiences of created
beauty fill us with joy and excitement. Yet, they never
fill our capacity for the experience of what is beautiful.
We are left empty again, and our search continues. We
are disturbed by wanting something more, something
which we do not seem able to reach, and that nothing
less than God can satisfy.
Christianity begins with a relationship barely understood
but beautifully attractive and ends with that relationship
fulfilled. The beauty of Jesus Christ — this dynamic,
inviting, perfect, transcendent Christ — disturbs us, for
we cannot fit him into our present way of life or our
usual categories of understanding. He changes us, converts us, empties us, sends us to places and situations
unknown. He leaves us always wanting more, because
he is always more. He invites us to silence, as he would
have us listen. The contemplation of Christ in our lives
forms us for speaking about him to others, for we will
be unable to resist sharing the beauty we have found in
Christ.
May the beauty of Christ fill your heart with love and
your life with joy. You will be remembered in my
Christmas Masses and prayers. God bless you and
Merry Christmas!

Epiphany of the Lord
Matthew 2:1-12
The Magi seek out Jesus and do him homage.
Background on the Gospel
The visit of the Magi occurs directly before the story of
the Holy Family's flight into Egypt. Matthew's Gospel
tells a version of Jesus' birth that is different than the
one in Luke. Of the actual birth of Jesus, Matthew tells
us little more than, “When Jesus was born in Bethlehem
of Judea, in the days of King Herod . . . ” The story of
the census is found only in Luke's Gospel, but we hear
about the visit of the Magi only in Matthew's Gospel.
We know little about the Magi. They come from the
East and journey to Bethlehem, following an astrological sign, so we believe them to be astrologers. We assume that there were three Magi based upon the naming
of their three gifts. The Gospel does not say how many
Magi paid homage to Jesus. In Matthew's Gospel, they
represent the Gentiles' search for a savior. Because the
Magi represent the entire world, they also represent our
search for Jesus.
We have come to consider the gifts they bring as a foreshadowing of Jesus' role in salvation. We believe the
meaning of the gifts to be Christological. Gold is presented as representative of Jesus' kingship. Frankincense
is a symbol of his divinity because priests burned the
substance in the Temple. Myrrh, which was used to prepare the dead for burial, is offered in anticipation of Jesus' death.
The word Epiphany means “manifestation” or “showing
forth.” Historically several moments in Christ's early life
and ministry have been celebrated as “epiphanies,” including his birth in Bethlehem, the visit of the Magi, his
baptism by John, and his first miracle at Cana.

La Epifanía del Señor
Jesús nació en Belén de Judá en tiempos del rey Herodes. Entonces, unos Magos de Oriente se presentaron en Jerusalén preguntando: ¿Dónde está el Rey de los Judíos que ha nacido? Porque
hemos visto salir su estrella y venimos a adorarlo. Al enterarse el
rey Herodes, se sobresaltó y todo Jerusalén con él; convocó a los
sumos pontífices y a los letrados del país, y les preguntó dónde
tenía que nacer el Mesías. Ellos le contestaron: En Belén de Judá, porque así lo ha escrito el Profeta: "Y tú. Belén, tierra de
Judá, no eres ni mucho menos la última de las ciudades de Judá;
Pues de ti saldrá un jefe que será el pastor de mi pueblo Israel”.
Entonces Herodes llamó en secreto a los Magos, para que le precisaran el tiempo en que había aparecido la estrella, y los mandó
a Belén diciéndoles: Id y averiguad cuidadosamente qué hay del
niño y, cuando lo encontréis, avisadme, para ir yo también a adorarlo. Ellos, después de oír al rey, se pusieron en camino, y de
pronto la estrella que había visto salir comenzó a guiarlos hasta
que vino a pararse encima de donde estaba el niño. Al ver la estrella, se llenaron de inmensa alegría. Entraron en la casa, vieron
al niño con María, su madre, y cayendo de rodillas, lo adoraron:
después, abriendo sus cofres, le ofrecieron regalos: oro, incienso
y mirra. Y habiendo recibido en sueños un oráculo, para que no
volvieran a Herodes, se marcharon a su tierra por otro camino.

LA FIESTA DE EPIFANÍA
La Iglesia celebra la epifanía a los doce
días de la navidad. Se trata de una fiesta
que tiene un carácter similar al de la
anterior. Son fiestas compañeras, si no
gemelas. El nombre de "pequeña navidad" dado a la epifanía expresa la idea
popular de la fiesta en la Iglesia occidental.
La epifanía es de origen oriental y, probablemente, comenzó a
celebrarse en Egipto. De allí pasó a otras iglesias de Oriente, y
posteriormente fue traída a Occidente, primero a la Galia, más
tarde a Roma y al norte de África. La aparición de esta fiesta al
principio del siglo IV coincidió aproximadamente con la institución de la navidad en Roma.
La fiesta toma un carácter más universal. Dios deja de manifestarse sólo a una raza, a un pueblo privilegiado, y se da a conocer a todo el mundo. La buena nueva de la salvación es comunicada a todos los hombres. El pueblo de Dios se compone ahora
de hombres y mujeres de toda tribu, nación y lengua. La raza
humana forma una sola familia, pues el amor de Dios abraza a
todos.

San Juan Neumann, (Redentorista) - 5 de Enero
Obispo de Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, EUA,
nació en Prachatitz, Bohemia, el 28 de marzo
de 1811. Asiste a la escuela en Budweis y
entra en su seminario en 1831. Dos años más
tarde se traslada a la universidad de Charles
Ferdinand, Praga, donde estudia teología.
Espera ser ordenado sacerdote en 1835, pero
entonces decide el obispo que no habrá más
ordenaciones. Hoy es difícil imaginarse una
cosa semejante pero en aquel entonces, Bohemia estaba llena de sacerdotes. Ha aprendido el inglés trabajando en una fábrica donde
los jornaleros hablaban inglés. Escribe entonces a obispos de América. Por fin, el obispo de Nueva York acepta
ordenarlo.
Para poder seguir la llamada de Dios al sacerdocio, Juan se ve obligado a abandonar para siempre su madre patria y a atravesar el Atlántico
en pos de una tierra nueva y todavía dura.
En Nueva York, Juan se convierte en uno de los 36 sacerdotes al servicio de los 200.000 católicos de la diócesis. Su parroquia, en la parte
occidental del estado de Nueva York, se extiende desde el lago Ontario
a Pennsylvania. Su iglesia no tiene ni campanario ni pavimento, pero
poco importa esto porque Juan anda casi siempre por la calle y se desplaza de aldea en aldea, escalando incluso montañas, para visitar a los
enfermos. Juan siente el deseo de pertenecer a una comunidad y entra
con los Redentoristas, una congregación de sacerdotes y hermanos
dedicados a ayudar a los pobres y a los más abandonados. Es el primero de los sacerdotes que entrarán en la Congregación en América,
hace los votos en Baltimore el 16 de enero de 1842. Desde el comienzo, sus compañeros religiosos lo aprecian muchísimo por su notable
santidad, por su celo y por su amabilidad. Su conocimiento de seis
lenguas modernas, nada menos, lo hace particularmente apto para
trabajar en la políglota sociedad americana del siglo XIX. Trabaja en
Baltimore y en Pittsburg. En 1847 es nombrado Visitador o Superior
Mayor de los Redentoristas en Estados Unidos. El Padre Neumann es
nombrado obispo de Filadelfia y consagrado como tal en Baltimore el
28 de marzo de 1852. Su diócesis es enorme y atraviesa por un período de notable desarrollo. Como obispo, lo primero que hace es organizar una red diocesana de escuelas católicas. Fundador de la formación
católica en su país, incrementa en su diócesis el número de dos escuelas católicas que había al número de cien. El 5 de enero de 1860 (a la
edad de 48 años) cayó exánime en una de las calles de su ciudad episcopal muriendo incluso antes de que pudieran administrársele los últimos Sacramentos. Fue beatificado por el Papa Pablo VI el 13 de octubre de 1963 y canonizado por el mismo Papa el 19 de junio de 1977.
La Tiza y los Tres Reyes Magos
Existe la costumbre de pedir que el sacerdote bendiga tiza el
día de la Epifanía, con la cual escriben sobre el marco de su
puerta el año actual, y en medio de esos números, las iniciales
CMB en honor de los tres reyes magos Gaspar (Caspar en latín), Melchor y Baltasar. Por lo tanto el día de la Epifanía del
domingo del 2011, se escribe 20 C + M + B 11
Esta costumbre es un recordatorio para que todos en el hogar
pidan a Gaspar, Melchor y Baltasar su intercesión durante el
año 2011. Además de ser la abreviatura de los nombres de los
tres reyes magos, CMB, también es la abreviatura de la frase
en latín Christus mansionem benedicat (que Cristo bendiga este
hogar)

Gdy Jezus narodził się w Betlejem w Judei za panowania króla Heroda, oto Mędrcy ze Wschodu przybyli do
Jerozolimy i pytali: "Gdzie jest nowo narodzony król
żydowski? Ujrzeliśmy bowiem Jego gwiazdę na
Wschodzie i przybyliśmy oddać Mu pokłon". Skoro
usłyszał to król Herod, przeraził się, a z nim cała Jerozolima. Zebrał więc wszystkich arcykapłanów i uczonych ludu i wypytywał ich, gdzie ma się narodzić Mesjasz. Ci mu odpowiedzieli: "W Betlejem judzkim, bo
tak napisał prorok: «A ty, Betlejem, ziemio Judy, nie
jesteś zgoła najlichsze spośród głównych miast Judy,
albowiem z ciebie wyjdzie władca, który będzie pasterzem ludu mego, Izraela»". Wtedy Herod przywołał potajemnie Mędrców i wypytał ich dokładnie o czas ukazania się gwiazdy. A kierując ich do Betlejem, rzekł:
"Udajcie się tam i wypytujcie starannie o Dziecię, a gdy
Je znajdziecie, donieście mi, abym i ja mógł pójść i
oddać Mu pokłon". Oni zaś wysłuchawszy króla, ruszyli
w drogę. A oto gwiazda, którą widzieli na Wschodzie,
szła przed nimi, aż przyszła i zatrzymała się nad miejscem, gdzie było Dziecię. Gdy ujrzeli gwiazdę, bardzo
się uradowali. Weszli do domu i zobaczyli Dziecię z
Matką Jego, Maryją; upadli na twarz i oddali Mu pokłon. I otworzywszy swe skarby, ofiarowali Mu dary:
złoto, kadzidło i mirrę. A otrzymawszy we śnie nakaz,
żeby nie wracali do Heroda, inną drogą udali się do
ojczyzny.

Objawienie Pańskie - Trzej Królowie
Pokłon Mędrców ze Wschodu złożony Dziecięciu
Jezus, opisywany w Ewangelii przez św. Mateusza
(Mt 2, 1-12), symbolizuje pokłon świata pogan,
wszystkich ludzi, którzy klękają przed Bogiem Wcielonym. To jedno z najstarszych świąt w Kościele. Trzej
królowie być może byli astrologami, którzy ujrzeli
gwiazdę - znak narodzin Króla. Jednak pozostanie
tajemnicą, w jaki sposób stała się ona dla nich czytelnym znakiem, który wyprowadził ich w daleką i niebezpieczną podróż do Jerozolimy.
Herod podejmując ich dowiaduje się o celu podróży. Podejrzewa, że narodził
się rywal. Na podstawie proroctwa w księdze Micheasza (Mi 5, 1) kapłani jako
miejsce narodzenia Mesjasza wymieniają Betlejem. Tam wyruszają Mędrcy.
Odnajdując Dziecię Jezus, ofiarowują mu swe dary. Otrzymawszy we śnie
wskazówkę, aby nie wracali do Heroda, udają się do swoich krajów inną
drogą.
Uroczystość Objawienia Pańskiego należy do pierwszych, które uświęcił
Kościół. Na Wschodzie pierwsze jej ślady spotykamy już w III w. Tego właśnie dnia obchodził Kościół grecki święto Bożego Narodzenia, ale w treści
znacznie poszerzonej: jako uroczystość Epifanii, czyli zjawienia się Boga na
ziemi w tajemnicy wcielenia. Na Zachodzie uroczystość Objawienia Pańskiego datuje się od końca IV w. (oddzielnie od Bożego Narodzenia).
W Trzech Magach pierwotny Kościół widzi siebie, świat pogański, całą rodzinę ludzką, wśród której zjawił się Chrystus, a która w swoich przedstawicielach przychodzi z krańców świata złożyć Mu pokłon. Uniwersalność zbawienia akcentują także: sama nazwa święta, jego wysoka ranga i wszystkie
teksty liturgii dzisiejszego dnia.
Od XV/XVI w. w kościołach poświęca się dziś kadzidło i kredę. Kredą oznaczamy drzwi na znak, że w naszym mieszkaniu przyjęliśmy Wcielonego Syna

Św. Jan Neumann, Redemptorysta - 5 stycznia
Biskup Filadelfii, Pennsylvania, USA, urodził się 28
marca 1811 roku, w Prachatyczach, Bohemia, jako
syn Filipa Neumann i Inés Lebis. Uczęszczał do
szkoły w Budziejowicach i wstąpił do tamtejszego
seminarium w roku 1831. Jest pierwszym kapłanem,
który wstąpił do Zgromadzenia w Ameryce. Śluby
zakonne składa Baltimore w roku 1842. Od samego
początku jego zakonni współbracia bardzo go cenią
za jego świętość, zapał apostolski i miły sposób bycia. Znajomość 6 współczesnych języków sprawia, że
jest w sposób szczególny przygotowany do pracy w wielojęzycznej społeczności amerykańskiej XIX wieku.
Pracuje w Baltimore i w Pitzburgu. W roku 1847 zostaje mianowany wizytatorem, czyli wyższym przełożonym Redemptorystów w Stanach Zjednoczonych. Ojciec Neumann został mianowany biskupem Filadelfii i konsekrowano go w Baltimore 28 marca 1852 roku. Diecezja jego jest olbrzymia i przechodzi okres żywego rozwoju. Pierwszą rzeczą, której dokonał jako biskup,
było zorganizowanie diecezjalnej sieci szkół katolickich. Był twórcą katolickiej formacji w swoim kraju, powiększył do stu w swojej diecezji liczbę szkół
katolickich. Oprócz licznych artykułów jakie pisał do katolickich czasopism,
opublikował także dwa katechizmy, a w roku 1849 - historię Biblii do użytku
szkolnego. Do samego końca pozostawał aktywny. Dnia 5 stycznia 1860
roku, w wieku 48 lat, zakończył życie na jednej z ulic swego miasta biskupiego, zanim zdołano mu udzielić ostatnich Sakramentów. Beatyfikował go
Papież Paweł VI 13 października 1963 roku, on też kanonizował go 27
czerwca roku 1977.
