NAUKA SCIENCE Bartłomiej Ćmielewski Krzysztof Mąkolski Porównanie geodezyjnych metod klasycznych oraz technologii HDS do określenia odkształceń kratowej konstrukcji masztu Comparison of classic geodetic methods and HDS technology for determination of strains in truss construction mast 1. Wprowadzenie 1. Development of telephone and informatics networks, and what follows it, their technology, influences on more and more bigger demand for tall objects. Due to the dangers accompanying deformations of such constructions it is necessary to keep control over the location thereof [2, 4]. The results obtained in supervisory measurements must be a reliable and sure source of information about any deviations, to enable us to find out the occurrence of the state of endangerment [1]. The actions undertaken when using such constructions depend to considerable extent on the results of these works. Realization of these works may be executed with the use of many methods and various equipment. Precision and effectiveness of three methods were compared on the basis of measurement of deviations of the location of the mast. The first – a traditional method, consisting in measurement of directions; the second – a method modified, using measurements of distance without a reflector and the third – with the use of a terrestrial laser scanner. Two first were made with the use of electronic tachymeter, whereas the third method with the use of a 3D laser scanner. 2. 3). Dokładniejszym rozwiązaniem okazało się użycie sieci liniowej. Następnie przeprowadzono symulacje z zawężoną is built from the triangular truss of the side length 0.60 m, assembled from round pipes of 30 mm in diameter. The height of the mast is 60.0 m. It is secured with four sets of stay ropes, attached respectively at the height of 12, 24, 42 and 60 meter of its construction (fig. 1). 3. Discussion of the results of the observation of the measurement matrix The measurement matrix making up the basis for determination of the spatial location of the mast consists of 7 points, out of which 6 were disposed around the mast, and the seventh near the object in order to make the construction of this matrix firmer. The draft of the measuring matrix has been introduced in fig. 2. The measurements of the matrix and the measurements of the construction of the mast were realized with the use of electronic tachymeter of the firm Leica TCRP 1203 having the following measuring parameters: – magnification of the telescope: 30×, – precision of the measurement of the direction: 3’’ – 10cc, – precision of the measurement of distance with a reflector: 1mm + 1.5 mm/km, – precision of the measurement of distance without a reflector: 2mm + 2 mm/km – range to the reflector: up to 3000 m, – range in the measurement without a reflector: up to 300 m. – the laser applied in the measurement without a reflector had the beam of red color. The time of the realization of a measurement was about 7 hours. The measuring matrix was calculated in several different combinations after the field measurements had been accomplished. These variants differed from each other in the choice of individual observations and their number. The objective of such proceeding was to compare the results obtained for angular network, for linear network and for a combination of an- Wiadomości Konserwatorskie Conservation News 26/2009 719 Sieć liniowa Linear network Sieć kątowa Angular network Sieć kątowo-liniowa Linear-angular network Rys. 3. Warianty rozwiązania osnowy Fig. 3. Variant solutions for measurement network ilością obserwacji, co mogłoby wynikać z możliwych, występujących w terenie przeszkód. 2). gular-linear network. (fig. 3). The use of the linear network turned out to be a more precise solution. Then simulations were conducted with the restricted number of observations, which might happen as the result of possible obstacles occurring in the field. In addition to the earlier mentioned variants of solution of the measurement matrix, the calculations were also made for the matrix in the shape of a rosette (not possessing diagonals) and for the matrix in the shape of a triangle (without the central point). Taking under consideration all the presented simulating variants, it becomes evident that a lot more precise results are obtained in the case of using linear observations to the calculations. Here the errors of the bearings of a point oscillate within the range from 0.2 mm to 0.4 mm (table 1). However, errors for the angular solution are within the range between 0.6 mm and 1.0 mm (table 1, table 2). When comparing the values of the co-ordinates of the points of the matrix obtained in individual versions, one can state that their maximum differences do not exceed 0.7 mm (table 2). 4. Pomiar odkształceń masztu metodą trygonometryczną 4. Measurements of the strains of the mast by the trigonometric method Pomiary konstrukcji wykonano na pięciu poziomach – przy podstawie, na trzech poziomach pośrednich oraz na szczycie, celując na środek rury konstrukcji masztu. Do pomiarów metodą trygonometryczną użyto tachymetru elektronicznego firmy Leica TCRP1203. Dla sprawdzenia poprawności wyznaczania współrzędnych punktów kontrolowanych, w warunkach ograniczonej dostępności do obiektu, wykonano obli- Measurements of the construction were executed at 5 levels – near the base of the mast, at three intermediate levels and at the top, taking aim at the centre of the mast construction pipe. For measurements by the trigonometric method an electronic tachymeter of the firm Leica TCRP1203 was used. In addition to the observation of directions, the distances were also measured using the measurement without reflector. Having accomplished the observations in the field, the calculation of the co-ordinates of the controlled points of the mast construction were also calculated in several variants. In this case the best results were obtained by using to the calculations only the observations of directions from all the points of the measuring matrix. Dla obiektów zbudowanych z rur dokładność będzie determinować średnica rury a w przypadku konstrukcji z kątowników identyfikacja krawędzi. the object, the calculations of co-ordinates were made. The observations of directions used in this purpose were those taken from only three chosen positions together with the observations of distance from three other points of the matrix. Calculations were also conducted for angular-linear intersections realized from two measurement positions. The results of the analyses that were carried out show that measurement by direction method (table 3) gives the best results (0.9 mm 1.4 mm); compare this with the errors from 3.3 to 3.9 mm that occurred for the measurement without a reflector. In the case when there occur difficulties in correct positioning of the measurement matrix in the field, one can also get correct results from the polar measurement (from 1.3 mm to 2.0 mm). One can use this way for executing an adjustment [3] of the spatial location of tall objects. Przyjmując rzeczywistą wysokość masztu: h = 60,00 m, a parametr R = 0,1 oraz zakładając duże prawdopodobieństwo poprawności uzyskanych wyników, na poziomie ufności P = 0,997 (parametr r = 3), otrzymamy wartość błędu średniego wyznaczenia przemieszczenia równą 1,8 mm. Accepting the actual height of the mast: h = 60.00 m, and the parameter R = 0.1 and assuming large probability of correctness of the results obtained, at the level of confidence P = 0.997 (parameter r = 3), the obtained value of the average error of determining the dislocation will be 1.8 mm. By analyzing the obtained results from the individual variants one can state that the criterion of accuracy is met only in the case of the method of direction measurement. In the case of the angular-linear combination and linear measurement the obtained errors twofold exceeded the set precision. Due to this, if there occur large difficulties in the correct establishing the measuring matrix, one can also use the distance measurements made without a reflector in the observations of tall objects. 5. Porównanie wyników wychyleń konstrukcji masztu 6. Comparison of the results of deflection of the mast construction W celu kontroli efektywności wykorzystanych metod pomiarowych zestawiono wielkości odchyłek, które były bezpośrednim wynikiem obliczeń przeprowadzonych na bazie współrzędnych punktów kontrolnych. Obliczeniom podlegały zarówno deformacje osi masztu w rzutach bocznych (rys. 7) jak i w rzucie z góry (rys. 8). Wysoce przekracza to obliczone wcześniej kryterium dokładnościowe (1,8 mm), jednak w stosunku do obliczonego dopuszczalnego wychylenia masztu (a = 60 mm,) oraz uzyskanych z pomiarów wartości przemieszczenia konstrukcji (rys. In order to control the efficiency of the used measuring methods the magnitude of the deviations which were a direct result of calculations carried out on the basis of co-ordinates of control points have been set together. The calculations included both deformations of the axis of the mast in end views (fig. 7) and in top view (fig. 8). Because of the minimum values of differences in deflection found in both methods of the measurement - the classic, direction method – and the method with the use of a terrestrial laser scanner, the course of the axis of the construction was pictured (fig. 7) on the graph with one line. The differences would be invisible in the applied scale. The differences of the values of deflections at individual levels oscillate from 1 mm to 8 mm. This could have been caused by bad weather condition on the day of measurements (large changeability of the direction and the strength of the wind), and also by the time of duration of the observation. This extremely exceeds the calculated earlier accuracy criterion (1.8 mm), however, in the relation to the calculated admissible deflection of the mast (a = 60 mm) and the values of dislocation of construction obtained from measurements (fig. 7), it is still a little value. Recapitulating, the data received with the use of a terrestrial laser scanner can now be successfully used for making decisions connected with the current exploitation of tall objects and their possible adjustment. 724 Wiadomości Konserwatorskie Conservation News 26/2009 Level 5 Level 4 Level 3 Level 2 Level 1 the values of deflection obtained from geodetic measurements the values of deflection obtained from laser scanning Rys. 7. With the use of the method based on a terrestrial laser scanner the observation of tall objects gives values of deflection of the construction of the object comparable to obtained by geodetic methods. 2. By applying the HDS technology we have the possibility of obtaining information about the whole construction, and not only about its chosen units as measured by classic methods. 3. The results of measurements received with the use of the terrestrial laser scanner are sufficiently precise for making decisions concerning further exploitation of the studied objects. Introduction 1. Wprowadzenie In recent years, 3D laser scanners have gained interest, especially in 3D reconstruction and reproduction, mainly because of their capability to record huge numbers of points with high accuracy in a relatively short period of time. Especially in the field of deformation monitoring for analyzing the structural stability of built heritage, laser scanners can provide a much denser and thus better representation of the deformations taking place over time. The single-point precision of modern midrange laser scanners varies from 5 to 25mm depending on the laser and the measuring principle used, but also depending on the measurement conditions and the object surface to be scanned. Comparing this precision to that of traditional surveying techniques used for deformation monitoring such as total stations or contact sensors, the precision of a laser scanner is approximately 1 order lower in magnitude. The main disadvantage of these traditional techniques is that they only offer single-point measurements and thus require prior knowledge of critical zones. The accuracy of a laser scanner can, however, be upgraded by fitting surfaces to the collected points and as such average the errors on each single point. In order to optimize the accuracy even further, multiple scans of the same object can be acquired sequentially, increasing the number of points and thus theoretically improving the standard deviation of a single point measurement [1]. In this paper, the results of a test under laboratory conditions are presented which aimed at de- W niedawnych latach skanery laserowe 3D stały się obiektem zainteresowania, szczególnie w zakresie rekonstrukcji i reprodukcji 3D, głównie z powodu ich możliwości zarejestrowania ogromnej liczby punktów, z wysoką dokładnością, w stosunkowo krótkim czasie. Specjalnie w obszarze monitoringu deformacji, w celu analizowania konstrukcyjnej stabilności budowli stanowiącej dziedzictwo kulturowe, skanery laserowe mogą zapewnić dużo gęstsze i w ten sposób lepsze przedstawienie deformacji, które nastąpiły w miarę upływu czasu. Aby jeszcze bardziej zoptymalizować dokładność, można przeprowadzić po kolei wielokrotne skanowanie te-go samego przedmiotu, zwiększając liczbę punktów i w ten sposób teoretycznie poprawiając odchylenie standardowe pomiaru pojedynczego punktu [1]. Pulsebased scanners emit laser pulses and measure the time between sending these pulses and receiving their reflection from a surface. Since the laser pulse travels with a constant speed, the speed of light, the distance between the scanner and the object can be determined. Their main benefits are the large range (up to 3km) and the fact that their accuracy is independent of the distance to the objects that needs to be measured. One disadvantage is the fact that before sending a second pulse, ones needs to wait for the reflection of the first pulse to be received. This makes this measurement principle rather slow (50.000 pts./sec) compared to phase-based scanners (500.000 pts./sec.). Phase based scanners emit a continuous modulated signal and calculate the distance to the object by comparing the phase of the reflected signal to that of the sent signal. This allows a faster point acquisition. However, as the signal modulation is affected by noise at longer distances, its range is limited to 50 meter, or even to 25 meter for highly accurate measurements. The result of a 3D laser scanning campaign is a virtual three-dimensional point cloud representing the entire geometry of the scanned area. As laser scanning is a field-of-view technique, meaning that laser scanners cannot ‘see’ through obstacles or around edges, multiple scan positions are often necessary to cover the whole object. The process of linking these different positions is called ‘registration’. The registration of multiple scans is often performed using artificial targets placed in the scene and captured with very high resolution using the laser scanner. These artificial targets then define reference points in the virtual point cloud and allow the computation of transformations putting all the scans in the same reference system. Once all the sub-scans are registered, the global point cloud still needs extensive processing in order to obtain useful information. The main steps in this processing workflow are: noise reduction, resampling, surface modeling and hole filling. 3. Deformation monitoring using laser scanning Research on the use of terrestrial laser scanners for deformation monitoring has started only recently, 728 W niniejszym artykule są przedstawione wyniki badań w warunkach laboratoryjnych, które miały na celu określenie czułości lasera skanującego dla wykrywania deformacji. 2. Główne kroki w tym schemacie działań są następujące: redukcja szumów, ponowne po- Wiadomości Konserwatorskie Conservation News 26/2009 mainly because of the low single point accuracy that can be achieved. However, in literature a number of references can be found using this technique. Tsakiri [2] publishes the results of a deformation measurement of a sea lock using a laser scanner which is fixed on a stable position. The point clouds are then segmented by fitting planes and the distances between these planes are computed as a deformation measurement. The detected deformation are in the order of 9 to 21 mm. Gonzales and Aguilera [3] use terrestrial laser scanning to perform 3 subsequent measurements of a dam in Spain. The first survey is done when the reservoir behind the dam is empty, and the second survey when it is filled. Between the second and the third survey, a tunnel was built close by. In order to orient the point clouds according to each other, they use artificial targets attached to an external reference system using total station measurements. The detected deformations between the first and the second measurement campaign fulfilled the expected pattern, resulting in deformation of 8mm in the center of the dam decreasing towards the edges. Between the second and the third measurement, deformations up to 18 mm were detected. Gielsdorf [4] describes an algorithm that orients subsequent point clouds according to each other based on the automatic recognition of flat surfaces. Tests prove that deformations larger than 10 mm can be detected. The workflow for defoation monitoring using terrestrial laser scanning can be described as follows. A structure is scanned at two different times t1 and t2, assuming it deforms within this time frame. This results in two point clouds representing the structures’ condition at these points in time. For the sake of simplicity we will assume that only one scan is made of the structure, so that there is no need for registration of different point clouds. Next, both point clouds must be positioned according to the same spatial reference. This is a crucial step which we will call “orientation”. After having been oriented in a unique reference system, the point clouds can be compared to determine the deformations that have taken place between t1 and t2. However, since laser scanners never measure exactly the same points two times in a row, rough point clouds cannot be compared. Therefore at least one of the point clouds must be converted to a mesh before the differences between both scans can be computed. bieranie próbki, modelowanie powierzchni i wypełnianie dziur. 3. Po zorientowaniu w jednoznacznym systemie odniesienia, chmury pun- Wiadomości Konserwatorskie Conservation News 26/2009 729 The orientation of the point clouds in a common reference is of the greatest importance for the accuracy of the detected deformations. For this reason, four possible configurations (table 1) for the set-up of the measurement campaign are preset. Each of these configurations implies a different way of referencing the point clouds captured at different times. However, only two of the configurations lead to an accuracy that is high enough for deformation monitoring in historical buildings. któw mogą zostać porównane, aby określić odkształcenia, które nastąpiły między t1 i t2. Since the scanner does not move between scans, its internal reference system does not change. Therefore the resulting point clouds are automatically positioned in a unique reference and there is no need for further orientation. The main drawback of this configuration is the high cost involved, as the scanner should be left in place. 730 Expensive Drogi Chance of theft or damage Możliwość kradzieży lub uszkodzenia Scanner position must be stable Pozycja skanera musi być stała Only 1 point cloud per scanner possible Możliwa jest tylko jedna chmura punktów na jeden skaner – – – No absolute reference possible Żadne absolutne odniesienie nie jest możliwe Requires stable elements in the surroundings Wymaga stałych elementów w otoczeniu Low accuracy Niska dokładność ności wykrytych odkształceń. Ponieważ skaner nie porusza Wiadomości Konserwatorskie Conservation News 26/2009 A second set-up consists of permanent targets that are placed on stable positions. These targets, that are supposed not to move between measurements, are used for the orientation of the point clouds measured at different times. Since the orientation for this setup is based entirely on targets, the scanner moved after one measurement and placed back on approximately the same position for a measurement at another time. A potential problem with this setup is the need to find stable points for the targets inside the scanned area. As historical buildings are constantly moving, this might be problematic. When it is impossible to find stable locations for targets inside the scanned area, a third configuration can be used. In this set-up, targets are removed from the scanned area after every measurement and placed back (on possibly entirely different positions) for the next measurement. An external reference consisting of stable points outside the scanned area is then used to determine the position of the targets inside the scanned area before every measurement. The coordinates of the targets are determined using a topographical surveying method which should be as accurate as possible (i.e. total station). Although this set-up has been used with success for the monitoring of large dams [5], our tests have shown that the resulting accuracy is too low for deformation monitoring in historical structures. The fourth set-up does not make use of any targets, nor does it need a laser scanner placed in a permanent and stable position. In this last case, stable parts of the structure itself or of its surroundings are used to orient the point clouds. The stable parts of the point clouds are selected and fitted together, resulting in the determination of the parameters of the rigid body transformation that orients one cloud with respect to another. Although our own tests have shown that even deformations of up to 2,5 cm could not be detected, Gielsdorf [4] claim to have detected deformations of 1 cm by using planefitting algorithms on historical buildings. This seems possible if the algorithms were of a very high quality, but in any case it is far below the sub-millimeter accuracy that is pursued in our research. 4. The object of the test measurements is a 90 cm high by 140 cm wide masonry arch (figure 1). One of the legs of the arch was attached to a movable platform controlled by a screwing mechanism. The masonry arch was selected because of its rough but realistic texture, its high resistance to deformations and the high occurrence of arches in historical heritage buildings. Konkretny przykład próby Aby zbadać minimalne wykrywalne odkształcenie przy użyciu naziemnego skanera laserowego, został przygotowany przykład. Przedmiotem testowych pomiarów jest murowany łuk o wysokości 90 cm i rozpiętości 140 cm (rys. 1). Fig. 1. The masonry arch with paper targets (left), scheme of subsequent applied deformations (right) Rys. 1. Murowany łuk z papierowymi celami(po lewej), schemat kolejnych zastosowanych odkształceń (po prawej) The arch was scanned multiple times, moving the right leg of the arch a few millimeters outwards between scans. The exact displacement of the foot was measured using an electronic vernier calliper with a precision of 0,1 mm. After every step, two scans were taken of the arch and its surroundings, one with a resolution of 5 mm and one with 1 mm. This allowed to determine the effect of resolution on the accuracy of the results. Firstly, the ability to detect deformations based on artificial targets was analyzed. A paper target was attached to the moving platform. This target was measured using both a reflectorless total station and the terrestrial laser scanner after each step. In this way, the accuracy of the displacement measured by both total station and laser scanner could be checked. Table 2 shows the error on the difference between two positions of a target measured from the same scanning position. As such, any systematic errors are ruled out and there is no uncertainty about the orientation between different point clouds. Cel wykonany z papieru został przymocowany do poruszanej platformy. Then, the point clouds themselves were used to detect deformations. The point clouds measured after each deformation step were compared with a mesh of the original geometry of the arch. This brings up the first parameter influencing the measurements, namely the scan resolution. The higher the resolution, the better the local surface is approximated. However, in practice, a proper balance needs to be found between the required level of detail and the scan time. In this test case scans were made with a resolution of 1 mm and 4 mm. The point clouds obtained were then meshed using the software package Geomagic Studio. Scans made at a resolution of 1 mm were clearly oversampled. Oversampling occurs when the resolution is chosen so small that the distance between neighboring points becomes smaller than the error on the distance between scanner and object. For the Scanstation 2, this error on the distance measurement is approximately 4 mm. Comparison between the scans with resolution 1 mm (which are clearly oversampled) and those with resolution 5 mm showed that the measurement error on the distance between scanner and object is independent of the resolution. This means that the accuracy of an oversampled point cloud is as good as the accuracy of a normal point cloud. Some problems arise, however, when a meshing algorithm is applied to the data. Oversampled point clouds lead to meshes with a very poor quality. This can be explained by the fact that the angle between neighboring elementary planes becomes too sharp, resulting in a very coarse surface. This can be seen in figure 2. rzona zarówno tachimetrem, jak i skanerem laserowym mogła zostać sprawdzona. Meshed point clouds resulting from different point cloud resolutions, (left) 1mm, (right) 5mm Rys. 2. Chmury punktów przypisane do siatki, będące wynikiem różnych rozdzielczości chmury punktów, (lewa) 1 mm, (prawa) 5 mm Tests were performed, applying smoothing algorithms or resampling the oversampled point clouds in order to reduce their point density. These resulted in negative effects on the accuracy of the data. For this reason it is very important that the resolution should be correctly chosen from the start. As a rule one should remember that the resolution must be at least as big as the error on the distance measurement from scanner to subject. Finally, the 5 mm resolution scans were used and the distances between the deformed point clouds and the original meshes were computed and plotted on a 3D model of the arch using Geomagic. A colored representation illustrates the computed distances between the models, where green are relative distance smaller than 0,5 mm. These are the points for which it is impossible to tell whether the distance between the point clouds is due to noise in the data or due to real deformations. The other colors give the magnitude of distances that should represent real deformations. Analyzing the different deformations, it was possible to clearly detect deformations of the point cloud for a displacement of the foot of the arch over 0,8 mm. The distance plot for this step is shown in figure 3. Bigger displacements led to (much) clearer results. The other setup configurations were tested as follows. For the second configuration a number of artificial targets (both black-and-white paper targets and highly reflective Leica HDS targets) were placed on stable positions around the arch. The third configuration was simulated by placing a larger amount of targets around the arch than necessary. In this way, targets could be deleted from the point clouds, resulting in point clouds containing each a different set of targets. The coordinates of 734 dokładność normalnej chmury punktów. 2. 3. Większe przemieszczenia prowadziły do (znacznie) wyraźniejszych wyników. Średnie błędy pomiarów celów dla rozmaitych konfiguracji pomiaru all the targets were measured by a total station standing on a permanent position during the whole test. Finally, the fourth configuration was simulated by deleting all the targets in the point clouds and by using the surrounding walls and furniture as stable parts of the point clouds. For the configuration using fixed targets, the average errors on the target measurements are almost identical to those of the configuration using a fixed scanner position (see figure 4). The use of temporary targets led to a slightly larger error in the order of 1 mm. However, it has to be noted that the total station was not moved in our study. This means that in practice, a set error will be introduced by repositioning the total station. As this set error can be minimized by using a proper network, it can be said that even temporary targets can be used for deformation monitoring. The final configuration using some stable elements in the environment lead to much larger errors Inne konfiguracje organizacji pomiaru były testowane następująco. 4). Użycie tymczasowych celów prowadziło do Wiadomości Konserwatorskie Conservation News 26/2009 735 in the order of 30 to 40 mm. It also has to be noted that in the presented test, the deformation subject was many times smaller than the stable area used for the orientation. In practice this will often be vice versa. As such this configuration cannot be used for deformation monitoring purposes. 5. Conclusion Using a laboratory test on a masonry arc, it has been shown that displacements of 0,8 mm can be detected from a point cloud obtained by terrestrial laser scanning. The main benefit of using laser scanning for deformation monitoring is the fact that is can give a clear understanding of the general trend of the displacement as opposed to traditional (total station) measurements that only survey a sparse set of points. As the detectable deformation obtained by using artificial targets is 2 times higher than when using only the point clouds, it is advised to combine both. The target measurements will provide accurate deformation measures while the point clouds will point up the global deformation trend and possible critical zones. For an extensive discussion of this case study and a more detailed overview of the accuracy of current laser scanners we refer to Demeyere and Herinckx [6]. nieznacznie większego błędu, rzędu 1 mm. Especially in the field of cultural heritage, laser scanning has become an important tool for the creation of as-built data for digital archiving, monitoring or restoration of important elements of our cultural heritage patrimonial. One of the challenges, still remaining, is the use of laser scanning for deformation monitoring. This article addresses the question whether laser scanning can produce sufficiently accurate measurements so that it can be used for deformation monitoring of historical structures. W ciągu ostatnich kilku lat wielu naukowców próbowało wykorzystać skanowanie laserowe, używając tej techniki w szerokim zakresie zastosowań i stale rzucając wyzwanie jej możliwościom. Wiadomości Konserwatorskie Conservation News 26/2009 737 PREZENTACJE – RAPORTY PRESENTATIONS AND REPORTS Marek Baścik, Paweł Dudek Generowanie ortofotoplanów w programie Pointools – zastosowanie skanera laserowego 3D Creating cost-effective orthophotoplans with Pontools software – one innovative application of 3D laser scanning Do tej pory fotogrametria była praktycznie jedyną metodą umożliwiającą wygenerowanie ortofotoplanów elewacji budowli zabytkowych, często wymaganych przez konserwatorów. Zleceniodawca inwentaryzacji w „Łazienkach Warszawskich” w Warszawie zamówił wykonanie czarno-białych ortofotoplanów wszystkich elewa738 Photogrammetry – often an indispensable tool for architectural restorers – was once virtually the only method for generating an orthophoto elevation of an historic building. But creating such an image often significantly increase the costs of a project. Using 3D scanners to generate metric images, however, improves the measurement accuracy and significantly lowers costs at the same time. Photogrammetry, however, cannot be eliminated completely. If the project involves the implementation of orthophotoplans with a pixel size of less than 3mm, creating an image with the use of 3D scanning alone is difficult. Most scanners are “fourth dimensional”, that is in addition to the standard three coordinates of a point they also measure the intensity of the reflected laser beam. This creates an illusion of texture and aides the treatment and interpretation of the pointcloud, but it does not accurately reflect the physical reality of the object scanned. Light conditions which are so important in photogrammetry are not a factor at all during the laser scan, so it is possible to work in complete darkness. However, the type and color of the material of the scanned object is important, since it determines the strength of the reflected signal. One of our projects on showcase below is an excellent example of how 3D laser scanning can be used to generate an orthophoto. For our survey of the “Łazienki Królewskie” complex in Warsaw (euphemistically known as the “Royal Baths”) we needed to create a black and white orthophoto for Wiadomości Konserwatorskie Conservation News 26/2009 Rys. 1. * each external wall of the “Pałac na Wodzie” or “Palace on the Water”. To do this we used the Faro Laser Scanner LS 880 and a Precision Total Station Leica TCRA 1101 plus. To increase the accuracy of the global pointcloud we integrated all the images from multiple observation points into a survey network. This gave us accuracy within 3 mm. To generate orthophotos we used a program called Pointools View Pro, which can display point clouds in an orthogonal view and create images based on the representative size of a pixel. These images are our final product. Another feature allows adding the coordinates to the generated ortho which incorporates the appropriate orientation and the subsequent vectorization in Cad. It took us 4 days to complete all the 3D scanning and surveys. Office work (including data processing and generation of orthophotoplans) was finished by two people over two weeks. If our client had chosen traditional protogrammetry, the price would have been higher and the final product would have been the same. The traditional method would also have taken longer to complete than 3D laser scanning. After the statement by Professor Purchla, other guests presented their views and opinions. Professor K. Kucza-KuczyÒski stressed the absolute necessity to protect the heritage object as well as its space, as a key component for maintaining quality and value of the protected cultural landscape. Professor B. Rouba presented examples of building and architecture conservation containing relevant faults, which diminished their artistic, formal, material coherence, and therefore the overall intangible value of the monuments. Professor A. Tomaszewski emphasised the necessity for centralization of monument protection services. He also stated that a mere 2 hour discussion does not, by any means, gratify the importance of material heritage for our national culture, Polish identity and prospect development. In 2005, in the Palace of Culture and Science in Warszawa - as Professor Jerzy JasieÒko kindly pointed out - the Congress of Polish Conservators of Historic Monuments took place. It was organized by the Association of Monument Conservators and has been the first such congress since World War II. Nearly 300 participants attended, which accounts for a good representation of the Conservators' milieu. Due to the fact, that in the year 2005 the Congress of Polish Conservators of Historic Monuments had already prepared a RESOLUTION, which contains theses similar to those of Professor Purchla's REPORT, Professor Jerzy JasieÒko stressed the need to end discussions and implement their findings starting with legislation. He noted that creating a National Center for Heritage Preservation could be a good solution.
