Problems of Forensic Sciences 2015, vol. 101, 39–55 Establishing slip anglE and longitudinal whEEl slip basEd on yaw marks gEomEtry Jakub Zębala1, Wojciech Wach1, Piotr ciępka1, Robert JancZur2 1 2 Institute of Forensic Research, Kraków, Poland Faculty of Mechanical Engineering, Cracow University of Technology, Kraków, Poland abstract This article presents the results of an analysis of the yaw marks left by a car with nominal pressure in all tyres and with zero pressure in one rear tyre. apart from the determination of vehicle critical speed on the basis of yaw mark curvature commonly used in road accident reconstruction, a new method is applied in the analysis. in this method the slip angle and longitudinal wheel slip can be determined on the basis of the geometry of the striations which are an integral element of yaw marks. The aim of the research was reached by performing bench and road tests. next, the results of calculations done on the basis of yaw marks geometrical features are compared with the real values known from the measurements of car motion parameters. key words Yaw marks; Slip angle; longitudinal wheel slip; Zero tyre pressure. Received 10 April 2015; accepted 31 May 2015 1. introduction in the post-collision motion, when the vehicle is yawing and the driver cannot control the vehicle due to reaching the critical speed, yaw marks form in the shape of characteristic slanting striations (amirault, Maclnnis, 2009; beauchamp, hessel, rose, Fenton r., Fenton S., 2009; hague, lambourn, Turner, 1997; lambourn, 1986; lambourn, Jennings, knight, 2009). nowadays, when clean accidents are more frequent, the yaw marks are of great importance in accident reconstruction because they can be the only marks that enable the reconstruction of vehicle motion. it should be emphasised that such marks are also left by the wheels of a vehicle with mechatronic systems such as abS and ESp (amirault, Maclnnis, 2009; lambourn, Jennings, knight, 2009). On the basis of yaw mark curvature the critical speed of the vehicle can be assessed (amirault, Ma- clnnis, 2009; barlett, Wright, 2009; beauchamp, hessel, rose, Fenton r., Fenton S., 2009; hague, lambourn, Turner, 1997; lambourn, Jennings, knight, 2009; richardson, Orton, Josevski, 2012), and the orientation of the striations together with the spacing between neighbouring striations provide information on whether the vehicle was braked or not (beauchamp, hessel, rose, Fenton r., Fenton S., 2009). adequate formulas have been developed for the motion of a vehicle with nominal tyre pressure. however, it is not infrequent that as a result of a collision or driving into a sharp element from damaged vehicles the tyre is damaged, which causes a complete loss of tyre pressure. Preliminary tests with zero pressure in one wheel have proved that even then yaw marks are made, but they differ from those yaw marks on the basis of which the velocity and manoeuvres undertaken by the driver can be determined (Zębala, Wach, ciępka, Janczur, 2013). The difference results from much greater side 40 J. Zębala, W. Wach, P. Ciępka, R. Janczur deformation and the tyre with reduced pressure sliding across the rim due to lateral forces acting during the vehicle motion. Despite many studies and research works on the analysis of yaw marks there is no information whether, on the basis of the analysis of the marks made by a tyre with zero pressure, it is possible to determine the critical speed of the car and decide if the car was braked. The solution to the problem was possible only by performing tests with a vehicle in which one wheel had zero pressure. Such tests were performed within the research project of the institute of Forensic research. (Zębala, Wach, ciępka, 2011). They covered an analysis of yaw marks left by a car with nominal pressure in all wheels and zero pressure in one rear wheel. 2. yaw marks in road accident reconstruction in accident reconstruction the so-called the critical speed formula is commonly used to determine the velocity of a car at the beginning of yaw marks deposited on the road surface (hague, lambourn, Turner, 1997): v μ g R, (1) where: µ – coefficient of friction between tyres and the road; g – gravity acceleration; R – radius of a circular course. This dependence results from the condition of a steady-state circular test, at friction limit, in which the mark’s average radius is taken as being equal to the radius of the circle. Slanting striations are a distinguishing feature of yaw marks, whose orientation in reference to the vehicle motion direction makes it possible to determine whether in yawing the vehicle was accelerated or braked. On the basis of the analysis of the striations’ geometry the slip angle and longitudinal slip of the wheel leaving the yaw mark can be determined after the dependencies (beauchamp, hessel, rose, Fenton r., Fenton S., 2009): SD sin θ α arcsin (2) θ, TD S tanα 100% , tan (θ α) (3) where: (Figure 1): α – slip angle; θ – striation angle; SD – spacing distance between one striation and adjacent striation, measured along tyre mark direction; TD – spacing distance between one striation and adjacent striation, defined parallel to side area of the wheel. Fig. 1. bird’s eye view of a tyre leaving a striated yaw mark (beauchamp, hessel, rose, Fenton r., Fenton S., 2009). additional notation: ψ – angle between wheel lateral surface and striations orientation. These dependencies have been introduced on the assumption that the striations formed as a result of the friction of the tyre tread shoulder, a stiff tyre model and neglecting the variable value of tread elements and variable spacing between these elements on the tyre shoulder. angle θ and spacing SD can be defined by a direct measurement of yaw marks striations geometry, while spacing TD can be measured on the tyre. after the wheel slip angle has been calculated, the wheel angular position during the deposition of the mark can be defined. if this wheel is a non-steered wheel, its angular position corresponds to the angular position of the vehicle in reference to the mark. if, however, the yaw mark was left by a steered wheel, to define the vehicle angular position it is necessary to know the position of at least one more wheel. For the calculated value of wheel slip angle and the determined value of the angle θ, the slip of the mark leaving wheel can be found, using formula (beauchamp, hessel, rose, Fenton r., Fenton S., 2009). The effect of braking intensity, that is the extent of the wheel slip, on the striations geometry is shown schematically in Figure 2. Three types of wheel motion have been covered: free rolling motion, motion at partial braking and locking. in all these types of motion wheel slip angle has the same value while angle θ changes. in free rolling of the wheel the striations Problems of Forensic Sciences 2015, vol. 101, 39–55 41 Establishing slip angle and longitudinal wheel slip based on yaw marks geometry form perpendicular to the wheel sidewall and the sum of angles α and θ is 90°. When the wheel is partially braked, the striations orientation changes and the sum of angles α and θ is less than 90°. in a boundary case, when the wheel is locked, the striations orientation overlaps the orientation of wheel velocity vector. The real marks with three types of vehicle motion are shown in Figure 3. 3. preliminary analysis of yaw marks This research was inspired by the authors’ previous research on vehicle lane change manoeuvres with one tyre without pressure (Zębala, Wach, ciępka, Janczur, 2013). On a concrete road surface the tyre with zero pressure deposited a mark whose analysis was limited only to geometric measurements (Figure 4). The marks were specifically characterised by striations that formed as the effect of lateral forces acting on the wheel (Figure 4). precise measurements of the spacing of the striations formed from the wheel with zero pressure have proved that this spacing was not equal to the spacing of the grooves on the tyre shoulder (Figure 5). The average spacing between the striations was of the order of 0.10 m, while the spacing between the tread grooves on the tyre shoulder was ca. 0.03 m. another significant feature of the mark left by a tyre with zero pressure was a thin line next to the striations (Figure 4). These lines were of various intensity and were always located on the outer side of the striations. The beginning of such a trace was very intense and was visible before the characteristic striations appeared. 4. aim of research The aim of the research was to analyse the yaw marks left by car tyres with nominal pressure in all wheels and with zero pressure in one rear wheel in order to check the possibility of determining the vehicle critical speed, slip angle and longitudinal slip of the wheel. it was reached by performing bench and road tests during which the vehicle motion parameters were recorded. Janczur metric characteristics of yaw marks were compared with real values obtained from the measurements of vehicle motion parameters. 5. tests conditions The road tests were performed on a dry asphalt road surface in summer. The vehicle was accelerated on a straight road section and next the driver turned sharply to the left. During the motion on the curvilinear track the driver neither accelerated nor braked, and after he started turning he maintained a constant angular position of the steering wheel until the car came to stop. First the tests were done with nominal pressure in all tyres, recommended by the vehicle manufacturer. in successive tests, before the run, pressure was removed from the rear right wheel. The following parameters were measured: linear velocity and position of the vehicle, velocities of yaw, pitch and roll as well as steering wheel angle. 6. tested vehicle in the tests a Volkswagen passat (2003) with Firestone Firehawk 195/65r15 91T tyres was used. before the road tests bench measurements were made that included the determination of mass distribution on Fig. 4. Moreover, data from the can bus of the Volkswagen were also used, in particular the rotational speed of the wheel leaving marks, which enabled the calculation of the critical speed of this wheel. The car motion in tests was recorded with three digital cameras, including a caSiO EX-F1 and a Sony hDr-cX730E. after each run the state of the tyre with zero pressure was documented (Figure 6). 8. parameters of vehicle motion along yaw marks To analyse the yaw marks three runs were performed: one with nominal pressure in all the wheels (test no. 1) and the other two with zero pressure in the right rear wheel (test no. 2 and test no. 3). During the road tests photographs were taken of the yaw marks. after distortion compensation photogrammetric transformation of the photographs was made in the pc-rect program, and next, after their appropriate combination, orthophotomaps with the real yaw marks were obtained. in each test the vehicle motion parameters were measured. after the measurement data processing, following the procedure described in Zębala, Wach (2014), actual parameters of vehicle motion in an inertial, i.e. global reference system were obtained. The vehicle motion reconstructed on this basis was presented in pc-crash, against the background of the orthophotomap showing the real yaw marks (Figures 7–9). by the correlation of the vehicle motion parameters obtained from measurements with the real marks it was possible to precisely determine the vehicle motion parameters at each point of the observed yaw mark. 9. Critical speed of tested vehicle On the basis of the measurements of yaw mark curvature the car critical speed at the start of the disclosed mark was calculated using formula (1), and the yaw radius R was calculated from dependence: c2 m , (4) 8m 2 where: C – length of the chord; m – length of the middle ordinate (measured from the middle of the chord). R The value of the friction coefficient µ was determined based on several tests of emergency braking. The recorded time histories of deceleration were processed by means of a butterworth cFc 180 low-pass filter, following SaE J211 standard2 (Figure 10), and 2 SaE J211/1. Problems of Forensic Sciences 2015, vol. 101, 39–55 Establishing slip angle and longitudinal wheel slip based on yaw marks geometry next the MFDD (Mean Fully Developed Deceleration), defined in EcE no. 13 regulations, was calculated after the formula3: MFDD vb2 ve2 , 25.92( S e S b )' (5) where: vo [km/h] – initial vehicle speed; vb [km/h] – vehicle speed at 0.8vo; ve [km/h] – vehicle speed at 0.1vo; Sb [m] – distance travelled between vo i vb; Se [m] – distance travelled between vo i ve. The mean value of friction coefficient from several braking tests performed with locked front wheels was Fig. 10. Time histories of deceleration for three examples of braking tests. 45 0.69 and this value was adopted in the calculations of critical speed. For the calculations of critical speed a few chord lengths, meeting the conditions of application of dependence (1), were adopted, including the condition that the separation of the front and rear tyre marks over the length of the chord should not exceed half of the track width of the vehicle (lambourn, 1986). The lengths of the middle ordinates representing selected chords were measured in the figures with the reconstructed course of the marks (Figures 12, 13, 16). The calculated critical speed was in the uncertainty range of the method of ±10% when the length of the mark curvature chord was about 15 m (Tables 4, 5). Fig. 16. Vehicle motion with nominal pressure in all wheels 10.1 Determination of slip angle and longitudinal slip of the wheel based on yaw mark To determine the slip angle and longitudinal slip of the wheel on the basis of yaw mark a section of the mark deposited by the right front wheel with nominal pressure with striations identified relatively well was selected (Figure 17). Fig. 18. Determination of slip angle. 10.2 Determination of slip angle and longitudinal wheel slip based on vehicle motion parameters Fig. 17. car yaw marks with indicated section of mark deposited by the right front wheel. selected for determination of slip angle and longitudinal slip of the wheel. To determine the slip angle. θ was measured. the average spacing between striations SD was defined and the average spacing of grooves on tyre shoulder tread TD was determined. in the selected section angle θ was 61° and the average striations spacing SD measured at the length of 1.73 m with 50 striations (Figure 18) was 0.034 m. The measurement of the tyre depositing the mark showed it to be 1.92 m in perimeter. on the tyre shoulder there are 63 tread elements. which gives the average tyre shoulder grooves spacing of 0.03 m (TD). Substituting the above data into formulas (2) and (3) it can be calculated that slip angle was ca. 21° and the longitudinal slip ca. 5%. in determining the slip angle of the front right wheel that deposited the analysed yaw mark. the study was restricted to the determination of the wheel position at a place where. based on the striations’ geometry. the slip angle was identified. For this purpose the motion of the tested vehicle was used. reconstructed on the basis of motion parameters measured during road tests (Figure 17). With the known steering ratio of the tested vehicle and steering wheel angle the wheels’ angle was determined (Figure 19). Fig. 19. Steering wheel angle (black curve) and wheels’ angle (red curve). calculated on its basis. during vehicle motion. with indicated point corresponding to the analysed section of the mark (Fig. 17). The position of the front right wheel at the place where the slip angle was specified. based on striations measurements. is presented in Figure 20. The difference between the angular position of this wheel defined on the basis of vehicle motion measurements Problems of Forensic Sciences 2015, vol. 101, 39–55 48 J. Zębala, W. Wach, P. Ciępka, R. Janczur (black rectangle) and this position specified on the basis of yaw marks (white rectangle) was ca. 2°. Fig. 21. Velocity of the vehicle (red curve) and of the wheel transport speed (black curve) after the correction with indicated point corresponding to the position of the vehicle in the analysed place of mark (Fig. 17). Fig. 20. position of front right wheel specified on the basis of reconstructed vehicle motion and yaw mark. The longitudinal slip of the wheel was calculated after the dependence (beauchamp, hessel, rose, Fenton, r., Fenton, S., 2009): S V·cos α ωr , V·cos α (6) where: S – longitudinal wheel slip; V – wheel’s velocity; ω – rotational speed of tyre; r – tyre’s radius; α – slip angle. To define the so-called wheel transport speed ωr the data from the can were used. but in the tested car the recorded wheel transport speed from the can is calculated by the abS algorithm which includes the wheel angular velocity ω and the wheel radius r specified by the manufacturer. So the velocity calculated in this way differs from the actual velocity of the car because the wheel radius adopted by the manufacturer is not necessarily equal to the wheels’ dynamic radius in motion. To make this velocity useful. it had to be corrected. adopting as the criterion the identical value of both velocities during straight driving (Figure 21). another parameter necessary to calculate the longitudinal slip of the wheel is the actual velocity of the wheel centre. which was determined by the transformation of the velocity from the GpS receiver to the wheel centre. in the transformation the measured position of the receiver in reference to the wheel together with the time histories of the car body angular velocities and angles defining its orientation were used. The time history of the longitudinal slip is shown in Figure 22. The value of the slip at the analysed mark place was about 15%. Fig. 22. The actual longitudinal wheel slip with the point corresponding to the analysed section of mark. The value of the slip obtained from the calculations (15%) from the vehicle motion parameters differs from this value determined on the basis of mark geometry (5%). This difference may be an effect of disregarding the lateral deformation of the tyre which results in an error of angular determination of rim position in reference to the mark and a change of tyre dynamic radius, caused by the cornering load on the wheel. 11. Vehicle motion with rear wheel with zero tyre pressure The yaw marks deposited by the rear right wheel with zero pressure also disclosed striations and a thin length-wise mark of various intensity. Moreover. during the tests the road surface was scratched by the rim flange after the tyre had slid down (Figure 23). The marks of the rim-road surface contact were on the outer side of the striations and the thin mark. Problems of Forensic Sciences 2015, vol. 101, 39–55 Establishing slip angle and longitudinal wheel slip based on yaw marks geometry Fig. 23. Marks deposited by rear right wheel with zero pressure. For the analysis of marks striations geometry two sections of the mark made in test no. 2 were selected: one from the beginning of the marks with the tyre only partially slid off the rim. and the other one from the ending part of the mark with the tyre completely slid off (Figure 24). 49 Fig. 25. The first section of yaw mark made by a wheel with zero pressure with indicated striations. Fig. 26. The other section of yaw mark made by a wheel with zero pressure with indicated striations. 12. discussion of results Fig. 24. car yaw marks from test no. 2 with selected sections of marks made by rear right wheel. in the first section of the mark regular striations were identified. the spacing between them about 0.11 m (Figure 25). after the tyre slid off the rim (the second analysed section of the mark) the pattern of striations was different (Figure 26). The striations were longer and irregular. the spacing between them. measured along the mark. varied from 0.1 m to 0.22 m. at such spacing it is impossible to determine the wheel slip angle or its longitudinal slip. Substitution of the measured spacing between striations SD in dependencies (2) and (3) is beyond the mathematical possibilities of calculations. The results obtained indicate that the wheel with zero pressure does deposit a yaw mark. From the analysis of these marks it follows that they are not identical along the entire length. in some places they formed a thin elongated mark or only striations. or both the thin lines. striations and scratches on the road surface. The striations differed in length. too. spacing between them varied also. The geometry of marks made by a wheel with zero pressure differed from the yaw mark deposited by a wheel with nominal pressure. The spacing between the striations of the mark made by a wheel with zero pressure was substantially larger than the spacing of grooves on the tyre shoulder tread. which indicates that this mark is not a plain reflection of the tyre tread. The Problems of Forensic Sciences 2015, vol. 101, 39–55 50 J. Zębala, W. Wach, P. Ciępka, R. Janczur analysis of the video films showing the motion of the wheel with zero pressure together with mark geometry allows one to state that this mark is caused by wheel vibrations resulting from the tyre rolling up under the rim in the place of contact with the road surface. 13. Conclusions 1. The analysis of a yaw mark produced by a wheel with nominal pressure shows that the methods presented of the determination of slip angle and longitudinal slip of the wheel can be successfully used in road accident reconstruction. 2. a wheel with zero pressure deposits a yaw mark whose geometry differs from the yaw mark made by a wheel with nominal pressure. 3. The spacing between the striations in the mark made by a wheel with zero pressure are substantially larger than the spacing of grooves on tyre shoulder tread. This indicates that this mark is not a plain reflection of the tyre tread and is caused by wheel vibrations resulting from the tyre rolling up under the rim at the place of contact with the road surface. 4. The results of car critical speed calculations based on the yaw mark curvature indicate that this method can be applied also for yaw marks made by a wheel with zero pressure. 5. On the basis of the pattern of the striations of the yaw mark deposited by a wheel with zero pressure it is not possible to determine the slip angle and longitudinal slip of wheel using dependencies (2) and (3) presented in the paper. W ramach projektu badawczego sfinansowanego przez instytut Ekspertyz Sądowych takie badania zostały wykonane (Zębala, Wach, ciępka, 2011), a obejmowały one analizę śladów bocznego znoszenia powstałych w czasie ruchu samochodu osobowego z nominalnym ciśnieniem we wszystkich kołach i bez ciśnienia w jednym tylnym kole. 2. Dodatkowe oznaczenie ψ – kąt pomiędzy powierzchnią boczną koła i kierunkiem prążków. Dla obliczonej wartości kąta znoszenia koła i wyznaczonej wartości kąta θ można w oparciu o zależność (3) określić poślizg koła znaczącego ślad znoszenia (beauchamp, hessel, rose, Fenton r., Fenton S., 2009). 6. pojazd testowy badania wykonano z użyciem samochodu osobowego Volkswagen passat (rok produkcji 2003), w którym założone były opony marki Firestone Firehawk o rozmiarze 195/65r15 91T. przed przystąpieniem do badań drogowych wykonano badania stanowiskowe, które obejmowały wyznaczenie rozkładu masy na poszczególne koła, wysokości środka masy, położenia środka masy Problems of Forensic Sciences 2015, vol. 101, 39–55 53 Ustalenie kąta znoszenia i poślizgu wzdłużnego koła na podstawie geometrii śladów znoszenia względem osi przedniej, rozstawu osi i przełożenia układu kierowniczego (tabela 1). ujawnionego śladu, wykorzystując wzór (1), przy czym promień śladu R obliczono z zależności: c2 m , (4) 8m 2 gdzie: c – długość cięciwy; m – długość strzałki krzywizny śladu. Wartości współczynnika przyczepności µ określono na podstawie kilku prób awaryjnego hamowania. Zarejestrowane czasowe przebiegi opóźnienia przetworzone zostały za pomocą dolnoprzepustowego filtra butterwortha cFc 180 zgodnie z normą SaE J2113 (rysunek 10), a następnie została obliczona wartość średniego pełnego opóźnienia hamowania MFDD zdefiniowanego w regulaminie EcE nr 13 według zależności4: R 7. aparatura pomiarowa W tabeli 2 zestawiono parametry urządzeń i czujników wykorzystanych w badaniach drogowych2. MFDD vb2 ve2 , 25.92( S e S b )' (5) gdzie: vo [km/h] – prędkość początkowa pojazdu; vb [km/h] – prędkość równa 0,8 prędkości początkowej vo; ve [km/h] – prędkość równa 0,1 prędkości początkowej vo; Sb [m] – droga przejechana pomiędzy prędkościami vo i vb; Se [m] – droga przejechana pomiędzy prędkościami vo i ve. Średnia wartość współczynnika przyczepności z kilku prób hamowania, wykonanych przy zablokowanych przednich kołach, wyniosła 0,69 i tę wartość przyjęto w obliczeniach prędkości granicznej. Obliczone prędkości graniczne dla wybranych cięciw i względny błąd w odniesieniu do prędkości rzeczywistych zmierzonych w czasie prób drogowych (rysunki 11, 14, 15) przedstawiono w tabelach 3–5. Znając przełożenie układu kierowniczego badanego pojazdu i kątu obrotu kierownicy, określono kąt skrętu kół (rysunek 19). położenie prawego przedniego koła badanego pojazdu w miejscu, w którym ustalony został kąt znoszenia na podstawie pomiarów prążków, przedstawia rysunek 20. różnica pomiędzy kątowym położeniem tego koła ustalonym w oparciu o pomiary ruchu pojazdu (czarny prostokąt) i ustalonym na podstawie śladów znoszenia (biały prostokąt) wyniosła ok. 2°. poślizg wzdłużny koła obliczono na podstawie następującej zależności (beauchamp, hessel, rose, Fenton, r., Fenton, S., 2009): S V·cos α ωr , (6) V·cos α gdzie: S – poślizg wzdłużny koła; V – prędkość pojazdu; r – promień koła α – kąt znoszenia koła. Do określenia prędkości koła ωr wykorzystano prędkość uzyskaną z magistrali danych can. W tym Problems of Forensic Sciences 2015, vol. 101, 39–55 Ustalenie kąta znoszenia i poślizgu wzdłużnego koła na podstawie geometrii śladów znoszenia miejscu śladu prążki miały większą długość i przebiegały nieregularnie, a odległość pomiędzy nimi, mierzona wzdłuż śladu, wynosiła od 0,1 m do 0,22 m. przy takiej odległości pomiędzy prążkami nie jest możliwe określanie kąta znoszenia koła, a tym bardziej jego poślizgu wzdłużnego. Wprowadzenie zmierzonych odległości pomiędzy prążkami SD do zależności (2) i (3) wykracza poza matematyczne możliwości obliczeń. 4. Wyniki obliczeń prędkości granicznej samochodu na podstawie krzywizny śladu znoszenia wskazują, że Problems of Forensic Sciences 2015, vol. 101, 39–55
