Ostatnia inicjatywa pomnikowa z czasów PRL, pomnik nazwany przez
mieszkańców „pomnikiem utrwalaczy” i „ubeliskiem”, został ustawiony w 1985
roku przed Pałacem Lubomirskich w Warszawie. Rozebrany w 1991 roku.
Obecnie w tym miejscu znajduje się pomnik Tadeusza Kościuszki.
Monument to the Fallen in the Service and Defence of People’s Poland, Plac za Żelazną Bramą,

People’s Poland’s last major public monument was erected in 1985 in front of the Lubomirski
Palace in Warsaw. Sneered at by the public from the very beginning as devoted to the secret
police, it was pulled down in 1991. Twenty years later, a Tadeusz Kościuszko monument was
erected on the site.

Materiał opublikowany w niemieckim miesięczniku „Art”
Czyszczenie ulic i gabinetów z wizualnych symboli komunizmu budziło
zainteresowanie o status dziedzictwa odchodzącego systemu. Od 1954 roku, w
kompleksie pałacowym w Kozłówce, działała Centralna Składnica Muzealna
Ministerstwa Kultury i Sztuki, mieszcząc kolekcję rzeźb socrealistycznych:
zakupów i zleceń. Większość zebranych w Kozłówce prac pochodzi z lat
pięćdziesiątych XX wieku, szczytowego okresu socrealizmu w sztukach
plastycznych.

The removal of communist symbols from public offices and squares raised questions about the
status of the outgoing era’s legacy. The Ministry of Culture and Art’s Central Storage Depot,
founded in 1954 and located at the Zamoyski palace complex in Kozłówka, held a large
collection of socialist-realist sculptures and objects, mainly from the 1950s, the peak of the
doctrine’s influence in the visual arts.

1989, she became literally the face of the new Poland.

Hotel casino. At the time, there were only two other casinos in Warsaw: at the Marriott Hotel

działaczka na rzecz praw mniejszości niemieckiej i pojednania polskoniemieckiego. W Senacie, przywróconym decyzją obrad Okrągłego Stołu,
reprezentowała okręg opolski, zamieszkiwany przez najliczniejsze w Polsce
skupisko mniejszości niemieckiej.

Dorota Simonides, member of parliament in People’s Poland and a Solidarity activist, became
active in the early 1990s as an advocate of German minority rights and Polish-German
reconciliation. In the Senate, which was restored following the Roundtable Agreement of 1989,
she represented the Opole district, which has the largest German minority in Poland.

Zamieszkujący Polskę Niemcy, którzy w powojennej rzeczywistości PRLu stali
się tematem tabu, w demokratycznej Polsce odzyskali prawo głosu,
tożsamości. Nowela kwietniowa z 1989 roku, funkcjonująca przed
wprowdzeniem Małej Konstytucji, zagwarantowała mniejszości niemieckiej
miejsce w parlamencie. Wspólnocie Niemców na Śląsku Opolskim przewodził
Henryk Kroll, przewodniczący Towarzystwa Społeczno-Kulturalnego Niemców
na Śląsku Opolskim. Entuzjazm mniejszości niemieckiej symbolicznie oddaje
scena tańca z młodą Polką, Hanną.

A taboo subject during the People’s Poland era, Polish Germans regained their right of voice
in the new political reality; a law introduced in April 1989 guaranteed the German minority
seats in the national parliament. Henryk Kroll was the German community leader in the Opole
area. His improvised dance with a young Polish woman, Hanna, conveys the era’s enthusiastic
mood.

Reportaż we współpracy ze szwedzkim dziennikarzem Leif Sørman’em; brak
danych
30 września i 1 października 1939 roku rozegrała się tutaj bitwa z Armią
Czerowną, zatuszowana w okresie PRLu, bądź opisywana jako bitwa z
Niemcami. Z inicjatywy mieszkańców Wytyczna, w atmosferze konfliktów o
kształt i charakter pomnika bitwy, w której zginęła ludność wielu wyznań, w
1989 roku zrealizowano założenie z kopcem, tablicą pamiątkową oraz krzyżami
rzymskokatolickimi.

From a photo essay for an unknown client (collaboration with Danish reporter Leif Sørman)
On 30 September and 1 October 1939, the Polish border corps (KOP) fought a battle against
the advancing Red Army near the village of Wytyczno in the Lublin area; during the People’s
Poland era, the battle was either tabooised or described as having been against the Germans.
In 1989, on the initiative of local residents, the battle, in which men of many religions lost their
lives, was commemorated with a mound, a plaque, and Roman Catholic crosses.

The feature presents Elżbieta Ficowska, saved from the Warsaw Ghetto during the Second
World War, doing her daily shopping at Plac Wilsona in Warsaw. Besides its original context,
the series became also a documentation of the urban iconosphere of the era, which can be
seen in the background: a banana vendor, a farmers market, a camping trailer turned into a
shop, a newspaper stand.
