6 ZOOM by Cristina Franzoni Alex ten Napel is a Dutch photographer from Amsterdam who for two years, from 2004 to 2005, worked on a series of portraits of children entitled “Swimming-pool portraits”. The children were taken while in the pool and their faces exhibit a full range of human expressions from amazement to fear, happiness, indifference, serenity and curiosity. Different faces, wet and clean, all revealing the unique and personal interior beauty of each one. Faces skimming the surface of the water that seem to be floating on their own, without any neck to support them (at least on the shorter ones), and faces that sit higher up, erect, that look the viewer straight in the eye, like adults. Manifest in all is that special magic of being small in the bloom of childhood. They seem to be staring straight at us and we are tempted to ask, “whatʼs your name?” Donne e uomini, giovani e vecchi, grassi e magri, neri e bianchi e di tutti i colori, fotografati in acqua senza differenze. Zoom : The protagonists of your swimming pool series are children. For all of them you chose a white background. Childhood is synonymous with innocence and white represents innocence, just as water, one of the four basic elements, is also connected with the idea of innocence... Alex ten Napel : I had already created a series in the water that portrays Dutch people. It was a sort of documentary because the goal was to illustrate the transformation of the Netherlands into a multi-cultural society. Women and men, young and old, fat and thin, black and white and all shades in-between, photographed in the water in exactly the same way. The virtually-naked men and women in bathing suits did not seem to have any aesthetic relationship to their real lives: disorderly hair, lack of clothes, they became human beings in a natural state in perfect harmony with the water. This work was shown at the Epson Photo Festival in Naarden in May 2005. It was only later, when I actually selected the photos, that I noticed how much more expressive the children were than adults. Their faces ZOOM 7 8 ZOOM conquistato. Maybe water gives children a sense of freedom that they forget who they are. And for some of them, the pool was a completely new environment to be explored and their enthusiasm mixed with fear was tangible. I am interested in human emotions and the feelings that can be read on a face, that bring it to life. Capturing feelings and showing them in portraits is my job. Immortalizing life as it manifests itself in a fleeting instant is what I like. The white background, the water and square format are just practical solutions in order to bring out the intensity of expressions and emotions of the models. This is my style, it is the way I work. The central position of the figure in a close-up also serves to be able to concentrate on the eyes. When wet, skin, hair, eyelashes and eyebrows help to underscore more intensively the facial expressions and feelings also become more “visible”. These portraits remind me of my childhood when I spent a lot of time in the water, in pools, lakes and the sea. They bring back the purity and equilibrium of things when I was little, even if I sensed that the dangers of real life and becoming adult would have threatened the peace and carefree sense of being a child. Even in my photos, beyond the sense of calm and equilibrium that emanate from them, there is a shadow of the imminent problems and unease tied to the future. In essence, my portraits convey the carefreeness of youth and problems of the future, but above all of the water and how it is able to transform each individual into a different person. The water washes away the mask on each of our faces to reveal our true essence. When you dive in, the water sings in your ear, it flows over your skin and enters inside of you, allowing you to dream. Come hai scelto i bambini? How did you choose the children? Were they all in the same swimming class, or are they children you selected outside the pool environment? My “aquatic studio” is a pool near Utrecht. My models are children that go there and I observed them as they played among themselves. I never choose them outside the pool because their behavior would be totally different. In fact, I have met some of them on the street and I almost didnʼt recognize them. There was nothing of what I had seen in them when they were swimming. There is always an incredible throng and involvement during casting. Everyone would like to be photographed, parents and children alike. There is absolutely no dearth of models, the problem is finding the right ones. Sometimes Iʼve said to myself, “that girl or that boy would be perfect for a portrait”, only to discover during posing that it wasnʼt working. Saying no to someone is an unpleasant task, so sometimes, to make them happy, I just took the picture without expecting anything great to come out of it. And yet, some lovely portraits have been born from those casual shots, so you never know. So, even if on one hand I like to have everything under control, on the other, coincidence can be an excellent ingredient in photography. What were the biggest problems you encountered in taking these portraits? I imagine you had to get into the water yourself with all your equipment. Well, to tell the truth, itʼs not easy being in the water and handling lights, camera and everything else. Yes, I had to get into the water along with my models. On the edge of the pool were a generator and light. Behind the models I placed a white sheet pulled tight between two supports and, somewhat behind that, a flash that lit up the screen. All these preparations help to keep the attention and concentration of the children, which is not a bad thing. Before shooting, I warn them about the dangers of electricity close to the water and they take it all very seriously. I shoot as soon as they relax, when the tension drops off, when the worry—which comes and goes like a swing—disappears from their faces. You used the same techniques for all the shots. Same light, same format, same background. This helps to have emerge the differences between one face and another. Each model can be admired for his or her special features, for his or her unique physical characteristics. Your work celebrates the beauty of diversity and singularity of each individual. Yes, each of us is unique, but we are all part of the same whole. I am convinced that, although we are different on the outside, on the inside we are all the same because we are moved by the same passions and emotions. This is the reason why we have no difficulty in understanding our fellowman and his feelings. We are also all made of the same substance: 65% water. Children 75%! Just to keep to the same subject. Do you think a well-made portrait can really reflect the soul and personality of a person, as many maintain? Or do you think this is just a naïve presumption? No, I donʼt think a portrait reflects the personality of the model. I capture the typical expressions of a human being, not his personality. In the past I have worked with Alzheimer sufferers. People say that they no longer have a soul, but their expressions were very intense. So, the soul remains an unfathomable mystery for anyone. A good portrait can bring to light a feeling that is reflected on the face, and just as the sea pushes everchanging waves forward and back, so the expressions on peopleʼs faces are always changing. A good portrait will grab you, move you and make you feel human. A good portrait is a message that existence sends us. How does a serious photographic event compare to this new tendency at the 'art' fair? 26 PHOTOICON ARIS HAS long enjoyed its status as pioneer of photography in art and fashion. This culminates each November when photography is simply de rigueur in Paris. The huge and popular European 'month of the photograph' includes the 10th Paris-Photo fair held at the Carroussel du Louvre, part of the vast basement in the enormous Palais du Louvre. The Carroussel, unlike the Musée des Arts Décoratifs, say, or even the Musée du Louvre itself, is not a joy to visit. Unless you like climbing stairs, getting lost, being overheated, getting upclose to the crowd and a peppering of celebrities. But this could be said of many such spaces and the Carroussel has the advantage of being very central. And the P 106 exhibitors from 21 countries are top-notch. In 2006 Paris-Photo gave the limelight to the Northern Europeans - Denmark, Iceland, Finland, Norway and Sweden. 'We are celebrating the Nordic miracle' declared Valérie Fougeirol, the curator. Behind, beneath, between the hangings, book signings, conferences and such numerous events, the dealing goes on - for Paris-Photo is, above all, a market place. It was therefore fitting that tribute was paid to Harry H. Lunn Jr (1933-1998) a New York dealer and collector rather than a photographer, who played an important role in establishing Paris-Photo and is now declared to be founding father of the contemporary photographic world. The European 'month of photography' is another annual November event organised since 2004 by the Maison Européenne de la Photographie (MEP) and involving seven European capital cities: Paris, Berlin, Bratislava, Luxemburg, Moscow, Rome and Vienna. Last year the theme was photography and the printed page: 60 exhibitions divided into three sections and curated by Jean-Luc Monteresso. Anne de Mondenard, an historian of photography, provided history and context (Histoires de Photographies, Histoires de Publications). Gabriel Bauret, an author and art critic, explored the love of books (Désir du Livre) whilst Peter Knapp, artistic director, discussed the photography press, magazines and books (La Presse, le Magazine, le Livre). The MEP exhibited 600 original pages from the review Vu from 1928 to 1940, where text and images are mixed in original and exploratory ways by the likes of World Press Photo at the Passage du Désir, among a collection of key press photos taken from Life, Der Stern, Look, Paris Match, the New Yorker by Larry Burrows, Don McCullin, James Nachtwey and Raymond Depardon. On the glamour front, the Musée de la Publicité - part of the beautifully re-vamped Musée des Arts Décoratifs housed in one of the wings of the Louvre - exhibited photographs of the beautiful people by such major figures as François Kollar, Emmanuel Sougez, Guy Bourdin, Jeanloup Sieff and Jean-Paul Goude. Sieff reappeared at the Galerie Baudoin Lebon, a good year for them: their artist Mathieu Bernard-Reymond was awarded the Paris-Photo BMW prize worth 12,000 euros the theme: sublimated pleasure. On a more contemporary note, the coloured cityscapes by Joël Meyerowitz at the Hôtel de Sully were granted prime space. For something very Parisian, there was Tendance Floue, an association of thirteen photographers working in Paris. They exhibited their disconcerting, pensive musings to texts by the cult philosopher/sociologist of the Left Bank, Jean Baudrillard. Entitled Sommes-nous? (We Are?) and on show at a dynamic alternative space, Les Frigos so-called because the building used to be the cold storage rooms for rail freight at the Gare Austerlitz. Jeff Bark Untitled (Dusk), 2004-5, C-Type print, 147 x 109 cm COURTESY MICHAEL HOPPEN CONTEMPORARY Paris Photo JEREMY HUNT T RENDSPOTTING IS one of the major reasons for following the international flow of Photo and Art fairs. The difference between the two is that art can provide a touch of theatre and three dimensional drama, and is constantly self-consciously pushing the boundaries of what was once considered the avantgarde. Photography tends to move in longer time curves and is less relentlessly seeking the desire to shock the bourgeoisie. The enthusiastic - and numerous - artistically inclined exhibition audiences have subsequently proved resistant to shock, and it is a few years since Mapplethorpe exhibitions had to be entered through velvet curtains and nightclub-style security. One of the tendencies amongst the contemporary stands in the 88 galleries exhibiting at the 10th edition of Paris-Photo was the re-examining of the relationship between painting and photography, with the emergence of images that were constructed and manipulated rather than simply observed. Less of the school of Araki and Martin Parr and more Jeff Bark, Loretta Lux, Alex ten Napel, Mona Kuhn, Martin Schoeller and Joon Kim; while the bleached beach landscapes of Massimo Vitali were apparent everywhere. The American artist Jeff Bark (represented by Michael Hoppen Contemporary, London) shows influences drawn from Ingres, Norman Rockwell, Eric Fischl and the filmmaker, David Lynch. His portraits of a solitary nude figure are illuminated against shadowy domestic interiors, with a dull palette of greens and browns that recall the depth and tone of the works of Vermeer and of Dutch genre painting. Although the artist also refers to the American 1950's adult 'cartoon noir' aesthetic, of drawn curtains and dirty urban sunlight, suggesting an unseen asphalt jungle. Bark works with a large format camera and a long exposure time constructing each environment from scratch to create an individual scenario for each model in a process comparable to the painter in a studio. The models are painstakingly selected and the sculpted poses are both erotic and explicitly physical, yet suggesting an allegorical narrative. Loretta Lux (Yossi Milo Gallery, New York) trained as a painter in Munich and acknowledges that: 'I use the camera as a tool now, approaching painting from a different perspective'. Lux's photographs of small children, aged between two and nine, are presented as idealised, fetishtic Surrealist figures in dream like settings. Their rich artistic lineage has echoes of Balthus' eroticised images of children; the idealised kinder of National Socialist rhetoric, and the huge eyed urchins by Margaret Keane which enjoyed a kitsch popular taste in 1960's America. More significantly, her palette and luminosity refer to quattrocentro fresco painting. The posing of her figures owe something to the innocent cherubim and seraphim featured in Renaissance paintings by Botticelli and Raphael. Lux refers, in particular, to the 17th-century Italian mannerist painter, Agnolo Bronzino, and the Velásquez paintings of the Infante of the Spanish monarchy. The landscape background echoes the northern European light and space of German Romantic painters, Phillip Otto Runge and Caspar David Friedrich. The Dutch photographer Alex ten Napel (Ton Peek, Utrecht) attracted interest with his computer-adjusted portraits of children in water, reminiscent of anonymous aristocratic portraits by Gainsborough. Ruud van Empel (Flatland Gallery, Utrecht) describes his digitally manipulated hyperreal art as photo-collages made with the help of Adobe Photoshop software. His art related influences include painters such as Otto Dix, Edvard Munch and Walter Spies. His two series of African children, Venus and World create an exotic enchanted Garden of Eden jungle suggest the innocence of the naif painter Henri (Le Douanier) Rousseau. The Korean photographer Kim Joon (Gallery Hyundai, Seoul) paints body art onto his models. Previous series have reassembled cartoon transfers, sports kit, and religious symbols. The series on display in Paris, Duet-Snake, DuetFlower, Duet-Fire and Duet-Run, merged designs across the models like Hans Bellmer inspired erotic, hi-speed skaters. Podczas wieczornego spotkania w Banialuce o genezie Holandia to kraina wody, kanałów, jezior i rzek. 23 fot. Alex ten Napel Potem zacząłeś portretować dzieci. Dlaczego? Dziecko to z jednej strony banalny, a jednocześnie piekielnie trudny temat. 24 Ponieważ dziecko łatwo i szybko uruchamia swoje emocje. Dziecko i woda – to jakby powrót do życia w łonie matki. Takie odczucia pozostały we mnie z dzieciństwa. I takie odczucia moich dzieci zapamiętałem z okresu, kiedy były małe. Zestawienie wody i twarzy zawsze do mnie przemawiało. n r 06/ 2 0 0 8 fot. Alex ten Napel 27 fot. Raz do roku symulują oni Zgromadzenie Ogólne ONZ, które nazywają The Hague Model United Nations. Ostatnio zostały kupione przez The Caldic Collection. U nas to raczej wielkie wystawy.
