WINDOWS AND DOORS ON THE EUROPEAN MARKET p. 19 EDITORS’ NOTE p. 37 “Forum Branżowe” monthly has been cooperating with organisers of largest construction fairs in Europe for many years now. We have been long informing about such events, participating in them and publishing reports from them. On the occasion of such events as Fensterbau Frontale in Nuremberg, Bau in Munich, Equipbaie or Batimat in Paris and Made Expo in Milan, we normally used to append a foreign language part about Poland and the offer of Polish joinery manufacturers to the issue released at that time. We have recently gone a step further: we have begun to issue an international quarterly entitled “Forum International”. Last year we prepared its English & Italian issue including information about the Polish market, manufacturers and novelties in their offer. The magazine was distributed on the fairs in Milan, Bologna and Paris (a special French-language supplement). It encountered considerable interest of exhibitors during those fairs and of guests seeking information about possible cooperation with Poles. “Forum International” is laid in foreign press stands but our associates personally reach each exhibitor on the fair and hand them a copy. On that occasion they ask whether the recipients would be willing to cooperate with Poles and offer help in establishing contact. Apart from that, the new issue is sent to Polish diplomatic missions abroad, trade associations and chambers, construction industry and architect societies. The electronic version of “Forum” is available also on the publisher’s website and on websites of certain promotion and trade divisions in Polish embassies. The situation was similar for the last German- and Russian-language version of “Forum International”, which we distributed on fairs in Stuttgart, Munich, Düsseldorf and Vienna, but also in Moscow, Sankt Petersburg and Kiev. In all those places the magazine reached fair exhibitors and guests, who flocked to international press stands. They were particularly interested in the article about trade in first fix joinery between individual European Union member states and Russia. They realised with use of specific figures that Polish windows and doors perfectly fit into international trade, being only a tiny portion of it. Polish innovations presented in that issue aroused interest of foreign readers, and numerous inquiries to our representatives proved that they were willing to establish cooperation. We also know from our partners who place announcements and advertisements in “Forum” that it is an effective form of communicating information about companies and their products. Now we are giving you the autumn issue of “Forum International”. Because this season features a large number of fairs in many countries, we have prepared it in three language versions: English, French and Italian. This issue will reach all Polish embassies in Europe, appear in the actions as part of Polish Economy Promotion Programme, and be distributed during numerous meetings. Our associates will hand it to guests and exhibitors of fairs in Paris, Oslo, Dublin, Warsaw, Milan, Rome and Turin, and even in Johannesburg and Toronto. “Forum International” is present not only on a few selected fairs but in all places where customers of Polish joinery manufacturers can be found. We believe that we help establish specific commercial contacts in this way. We believe that such cooperation is the greatest opportunity for further development of the Polish first fix joinery industry. We want to be particularly helpful for such enterprises which do not have large budgets and extensive marketing & commercial services at their disposal. Every Polish manufacturer of windows, doors, or roller shutters, but also every supplier of materials for their production, is invited to permanent cooperation on foreign markets. You may simply find it easier with “Forum International”. 2 POLISH WINDOWS IN EUROPE 8 WELL-SEGMENTED MARKET 10 ALUMINIUM ATTACK 13 SHADE ON FAÇADES 16 FORUM INTERNATIONAL Publisher: Centrum Informacji Branżowej ul. FORUM INTERNATIONAL WINDOW AND DOOR JOINERY Photo: Magdalena Rocka WINDOWS AND DOORS ON THE EUROPEAN MARKET After the observable window and door joinery sales drop in the European Union by 15 pct in 2009, the European window and door industry has been unable to extricate itself from stagnation for four years now. Moreover, in 2012, the window and door manufacturing value was the lowest since the beginning of the economic crisis. During the period of boom, the window and door manufacturing value in the EU exceeded the level of EUR 48bn to drop during only one season to slightly over EUR 41bn. The years 2010–2011 were the time of insignificant growths in manufacturing value, yet in 2012 the market shrank again. In 2012, 27 EU member states manufactured windows and doors with the total value of EUR 40.8bn, which is 2 pct less than in 2011. In comparison to the pre-crisis 2007, the manufacturing volume in the EU is lower by circa 16 per cent. door manufacturing value was lower by EUR 200k, which is less by 2 pct than in 2011. In 2012, a greater drop was experienced by PVC joinery manufacturers. Their manufacturing value slightly exceeded EUR 11.5bn and was lower by 5 pct than in 2011. In comparison to 2007, the decrease in this segment was, howev- er, considerably lower than in the case of wood joinery. PVC window and door manufacturing volume was reduced by 11 pct, and the share of this segment in the EU joinery manufacturing value grew by 1 percentage point and amounted to 28 per cent. The share of the aluminium segment in the European joinery manufacturing volume increased from 24 to 26 pct in the period 2007– 2012. That growth resulted from the lower drop in aluminium joinery manufacturing volume than in the case of the entire market. In 2012, aluminium windows and doors for EUR 10.7bn were manufactured in the EU, which is 10 pct less than in 2007. It needs to be also emphasised that aluminium joinery is the only segment where manufacturing value growth was recorded in 2012 in comparison to 2011 (by 1 per cent). Circa 15 pct of the European window and door manufacturing volume is attributable to steel joinery. In 2012, windows and doors with the total value of EU 6.3bn were manufactured in this segment in the EU. This means that the manufacturing volume was lower by 1 pct than in 2011 and by 13 pct than in 2007. The turnover decrease was most painfully experienced by wood window and door manufacturers. In 2007, wood joinery for EUR 16.6bn was manufactured in the EU, which accounted for 34 pct of the total window and door manufacturing value. In 2012, the manufacturing value decreased below the level of EUR 12.3bn, and the share of wood joinery in the EU window and door manufacturing volume dropped to 30 pct. This means that over merely five years the manufacturing volume of these products decreased by ¼. In 2012, the wood window and 2 Chart 2. As recently as in 2007, Germany was only the third largest joinery manufacturer in the EU, with a 15-pct share on the Community market. However, it overtook British and Italian companies in 2008 and 2009, respectively. In 2011, windows and doors for EUR 8.5bn were manufactured in Germany, which accounted for as much as 20 pct of the manufacturing value in the entire EU. Last year this share increased to 21 pct, and the manufacturing volume – to EUR 8.7bn. This means that, compared to 2011, the manufacturing value achieved by German enterprises grew by 3 pct, and relative to 2007 – by as much as 24 per cent. 295 220 Sweden 210 Portugal 185 Slovakia 170 Hungary 155 Belgium 150 Source: Eurostat Austria 3 Austria 4 470 Austria 20 Germany 1070 Italy 40 0 1420 Poland Opposite tendencies were noticeable on the Italian market in the recent years. In 2007, Italy was definitely the largest window and door manufacturer in the EU. It manufactured joinery for EUR 8.2bn at that time, which accounted for 17 pct of the total manufacturing value in the EU. Over two subsequent years the manufacturing volume dropped to nearly EUR 6.7bn in Italy, but – after a clear rebounce in 2010 – decreases were recorded again in the period 2011–2012. In Italy, windows and doors for EUR 7bn were manufactured in 2011, whereas in 2012 – for EUR 6.8bn. It is worth emphasising that the Italian window and door joinery industry shrank by 17 pct in the period 2007–2012, which is almost the same as experienced by the entire EU industry. Italy’s share in the European joinery manufacturing volume remained unchanged. Joinery for over EUR 6bn was manufactured in 2012 also by France. The French industry is among those which have gained importance over the past six years. In France, window and door manufacturing amounted to EUR 5.7bn in 2007, to EUR 5.9bn in 2009, and to EUR 6.5bn after two successive years. After such a significant increase, a nearly 3-pct drop was recorded last year. Windows and doors for over EUR 6.3bn were manufactured, which ensured France a 16-pct share in the joinery manufacturing volume in the entire EU (higher by 4 pp than in 2007). The group of the major joinery manufacturers in the EU, despite the considerable decrease in significance on the European arena, includes Great Britain. Since 2007, when Great Britain was the second largest joinery manufacturer in the EU, with a share of 15 pct, the manufac- Chart 5. In Great Britain, windows and doors for EUR 7.3bn were manufactured in 2007, and for only EUR 5bn in 2011, followed by another drop last year. The manufacturing value decreased by almost 4 pct, to the level of EUR 4.8bn, and Great Britain’s share in the joinery manufacturing volume in the EU – to 12 per cent. In comparison to 2007, the British window and door manufacturing industry shrank by 1/3. Principal EU window and door manufacturers comprise also Poland, Spain and Austria, which manufactured joinery for over EUR 1.5bn in 2012. While Poland and Austria achieved turnover at the level similar to that of 2011, a drop by as much as 23 pct was recorded in Spain. Moreover, Spain is a country where the window and door manufacturing volume was lower by 69 pct in 2012 than in 2007 and this country’s share in the EU market has decreased from 12 to 4 pct over the past five years. International trade While after the 2009 decrease in the window and door manufacturing volume it was impossible to restore it in the following years, the pre-crisis level was achieved again after only two years in the case of foreign trade. Already in 2010 and then in 2011, a considerable growth in trade with non-EU countries as well as the so-called intra-Community trade was recoded. In 2008, the total value of window and door sales inside the EU amounted to EUR 4.5bn. In 2009, the value of this trade dropped by 13 pct, to EUR 3.9bn, followed by recovery over two successive years. In 2010, 27 EU member states traded in windows and doors for EUR 4.1bn, and in 2011 – for EUR 4.5bn. In 2012, the intra-Community trade maintained the level of EUR 4.5bn. In the case of export to non-EU countries, the current level is higher than in 2008. In 2009, the value of export outside the EU decreased by 17 pct in comparison to the value achieved in 2008 and amounted to EUR 1.1bn. However, growths were recorded in three successive years: by 6, 17 and 16 pct, respectively, owing to which the export value exceeded the 2008 level already in 2011, and it increased to the record-breaking level of EUR 1.6bn in 2012. Companies from outside the EU have been unable to recover their 2008 position on the EU market despite the fact that a slight increasing trend of joinery import to the EU market was observable in the period 2009–2012. In 2012, windows and doors were exported from other countries to the EU for EUR 655m. Export leaders The largest joinery exporter in the EU is definitely Germany, followed by Poland. While in the case of German companies this is not astonishing, Poland’s position might be a surprise for some readers. This is because Italy, France and Great Britain demonstrate twice as high manufacturing value. The practice shows, however, that the largest manufacturers are not necessarily also big exporters. Three out of seven major joinery manufacturers in the EU: France, Great Britain and Spain, are not even among the 15 largest joinery exporters in the EU. In 2012, joinery export at a level exceeding EUR 250m was recorded by six countries. Apart from Germany and Poland, these include Italy, Austria, the Netherlands and Denmark. 5 FORUM INTERNATIONAL WINDOW AND DOOR JOINERY Germany In 2012, windows and doors with the total value of EUR 1.42bn were exported from German manufacturing plants to 158 countries. In comparison to 2011, the number of export markets increased by 11, yet the total export value dropped by 1.8 per cent. The highest volume of joinery from Germany was exported to Switzerland (EUR 288m, growth by 7 pct), France (EUR 177m, drop by 7 pct), Austria (EUR 163m, growth by 4 pct) and the Netherlands (EUR 112m, drop by 15 pct). In 2012, German companies exported steel and aluminium joinery for EUR 720m, which accounted for 51 pct of the export value. PVC windows and doors for EUR 390m and wood joinery for EUR 310m were also exported. Poland Italy In 2012, Italian companies exported joinery with the total value of EUR 470m to 150 countries all over the world. Interestingly, over half of the export value reached the EU markets. In relation to 2011, the export volume of Italian windows and doors increased by 4 pct, with the sales outside the EU growing by over 10 pct, and to the EU market decreasing by 2 per cent. The greatest consumer of Italian joinery is France, where windows and doors for EUR 109m were sold in 2012, which is 1.8 pct more than in 2011. Higher growths were recorded in the case of export to Swiss and Russian markets. In 2012, joinery for EUR 63m was exported from Italy to Switzerland (growth by 12 pct), and for EUR 36m – to Russia (growth by 20 pct). Chart 9. Polish joinery was exported to 100 countries worldwide but it is definitely Germany that is the biggest consumer. In 2012, windows and doors for EUR 263m were exported from Poland to Germany, which is 14 pct more than in 2011. This means that in value terms almost ¼ of the Polish joinery export reaches the German market. Large consumers of Polish windows and doors are also Denmark (EUR 122m, drop by 8 pct), Great Britain (EUR 117m, growth by 4 pct), France (EUR 96m, growth by 12 pct) and the Czech Republic (EUR 79m, drop by 14 pct). Poland is the second largest joinery exporter in the EU in total and at the same time the export leader of PVC joinery (EUR 510m in 2012) and wood joinery (EUR 425m). The number of Polish metal windows and doors sold to foreign markets is lower (EUR 135m). Over half of the Italian joinery export value is attributable to metal windows and doors. In 2012, metal windows and doors for EUR 245m were exported from Italy. 30 pct of its export involves wood doors (EUR 140m), 11 pct – PVC joinery (EUR 55m) and 7 pct – wood windows (EUR 30m). Austria Also Austria achieved export at the level of over EUR 300m in 2012. Austrian enterprises exported joinery with the total value of EUR 310m, which is 2.6 pct more than in 2011. Windows and doors were exported from Austria to 86 countries but the main portion of the export focuses on German and Swiss markets, where 42 and 22 pct, respectively, of the Austrian export is directed. In 2012, plastic windows and doors with the value of EUR 105m were exported from Austria to foreign markets. Wood windows for EUR 75m as well as steel and metal joinery for EUR 95 m were also exported at that time. The Netherlands and Denmark also reached EUR 300m in export, and foreign sales of over EUR 200m was recorded in the case of the Czech Republic and Sweden. There are eleven countries with joinery export of EUR 100m to 200m and eight countries with export not exceeding EUR 100m among the EU member states. Conclusion The struggle for customers clearly intensified on the European window and door market after 2009. In the face of stagnation on domestic markets, numerous companies started to seek customers on foreign markets, which, however, also experienced noticeable slowdown. Brisker international trade coupled with the lack of sales growth on the Community market made many companies fail to withstand the increasing competition. Furthermore, in the case of protracted economic stagnation in the EU more bankruptcies can be expected. Fortunately, more and more macroeconomic data forecasting the incoming upturn of the European economy have been observable. The so-called Leading Economic Indicators show that Europe will “accelerate” already in 2014. Hopefully, these forecasts will prove correct and the European window and door industry will soon not only return to its 2007–2008 manufacturing level but also exceed the magical level of EUR 50bn. MAKSYMILIAN MIROS Centrum Analiz Branżowych / Centre for Joinery Industry Analyses www.cab-badania.pl FORUM INTERNATIONAL WINDOW AND DOOR JOINERY POLISH WINDOWS IN EUROPE The message that Polish windows and doors dominate on the European first fix joinery market has been lately present in various publications. It caused concerns of industry’s associations that export from Poland may be a threat for local manufacturers home. Facts, however, clearly deny that. Structure of window manufacturing in Poland (in %). Metal 2.4 Wood 17 Plastic 80.6 The value of the European window and door market has regularly exceeded the threshold of EUR 40bn in the recent years, whereas the value of the Polish manufacturing volume has not even reached EUR 2.5bn. This means that the Polish market share is only a few per cent high. There are domestic markets in Europe that are bigger than the entire manufacturing volume in Poland. The German market manu- factures joinery of the total value amounting to EUR 8.7bn, the Italian market – EUR 6.8bn, the French market slightly less – EUR 6.5bn, and the British market – nearly EUR 5.5bn. Poles are no match for them with their mere EUR 2.3bn. Export of Polish windows The issue of Polish export and conquering foreign markets has recently emerged. But are Polish window manufacturers actually dominant here? It is enough to examine the Italian market with its figures to find out that this is also a myth. In Italy, the value of the windows and doors sold amounts to EUR 6.5bn, while merely EUR 50m is attributable to Polish windows and doors. As one can easily see, the share is less than 1% of the value mentioned above. Only one out of one hundred windows or doors sold there comes from Poland. The case is similar in France and in Austria, and only slightly better in Great Britain and Germany. Poles do not dominate on any of European markets, yet one has to acknowledge the fact that Polish joinery manufacturers have increased their export sales year by year. Last year was another season when Polish window export volume grew. According to the calculations performed by Centrum Analiz Branżowych*, 4.35m Polish windows were exported to foreign markets last year, which means that the export volume compared to the one achieved in 2011 increased by nearly 13%. Owing to that, the quantitative share of sales on foreign markets in the total sales value of Polish window manufacturers rose to 36.6%. Over 70% of export share is attributable to PVC windows (3.1m), 27% to wood windows (1.2m), and merely 2% – to metal windows (80k). The largest consumer of windows from Poland is Germany, where over a million of windows were exported in 2012, followed by (in the decreasing order): the Czech Republic, France, Denmark or Slovakia. Although Poles do not dominate in Europe, they are among the leaders indeed, being the fifth largest European Union member state in terms of joinery value. With window and door manufacturing value of EUR 2.35bn, in 2012 Poland achieved a share of nearly 6% in the EU market. Indeed, the calculations performed by Centrum Analiz Branżowych prove that circa 7.7m window units were sold all over Poland last year, which is over 10% fewer than in 2011. And this means that it was the fourth successive year of sales decrease on the Polish market. Over 80% of the sales volume in Poland was accounted for by plastic windows, 17% – wood windows, and circa 2.4% – metal windows (made of steel or aluminium). Drutex from Bytów and Dobroplast from Zambrów remained leaders on the Polish market of vertical windows, with sales of almost EUR 50m. Over EUR 25m on sales on the domestic market was earned also by Oknoplast from Kraków and Eko-Okna from Kornice. In the case of roof windows, the unquestionable leader in Poland is Fakro from Nowy Sącz, a company which sold windows and accessories for circa EUR 50m on the domestic market in 2012. The export volume growth and the sales drop in the Polish renovation segment are currently two most clearly outlined tendencies on the Polish window market. Last year, 6m windows, i.e. as many as 1.2m fewer than in 2010, reached the domestic replacement market. This means a decrease of the renovation segment share in the total sales of Polish windows from 58% to 50% over merely two years. At that time the export share grew from 30% to over 36%, which is reflected in the quantitative growth from 3.7m to 4.35m windows. In new construction (residential and non-residential) projects, 1.6m windows were installed in 2012, which accounted for over 13% of the total sales volume of Polish companies. This means, in turn, that last year, after the two-year’s drop, sales in this segment returned to the level of 2009. To sum up last year’s achievements of Polish window manufacturers, two groups of companies can be distinguished: ones exporting and thus developing their sales, and ones operating exclusively on the domestic market. The latter experienced the effects of stagnation in the construction industry and a clear drop of demand for their products with a much greater strength. Unfortunately, the present season is enhancing these disproportions – the initial summary of the 1st half of 2013 shows that export has maintained its level, unlike domestic sales in Poland, which has decreased by as many as ten-odd per cent. The trouble faced by the companies which do not export windows has been worsening. However, thanks to the growing demand from abroad, window manufacturing in Poland still has a chance to maintain its last year’s level, even though analysts of Centrum Analiz Branżowych forecast that it will drop insignificantly, i.e. by 2%-3%. This means that c. 12m windows will be produced in Poland in the present season. Yet as early as in 2014, the return to the growth path is expected: the manufacturing volume will be higher by 5%-8% in comparison to 2013, which will translate into manufacturing 12.2-12.6m window units. And although Poles will still not dominate in Europe, they will be acknowledged there, and Polish windows and doors will be a good showpiece of the capacity of the entire Polish construction material industry. ROBERT KLOS w value of which was over EUR 1.5bn, were manufactured in Poland last year. Despite the insignificant growth of manufacturing value in comparison to 2011, the number of windows produced in Poland dropped by 3.2% and was the lowest since 2007. The manufacturing volume decrease was recorded in each product department, the greatest of which was observable in the wood window segment, where the manufacturing volume dropped by as many as 7.4% in comparison to 2011. Forecast 2013–2014”, Warsaw, July 2013. 9 FORUM INTERNATIONAL WINDOW AND DOOR JOINERY WELL-SEGMENTED MARKET refer to this harmonised standard. Manufacturers and importers are obliged to provide the user with complete information about the product. This is ensured by the standardised Declaration of Performance (DoP). However, the law provides for exceptions. Issuing the DoP is not required in the case of products for particular application, produced on site and manufactured “in a traditional manner or in a manner appropriate to heritage conservation”. Simplified methods for specifying the type of products are also permitted for small and medium enterprises. Hopefully, Polish secondary legislation will properly specify these procedures soon, for the benefit of the product quality and customers. There are several big companies operating on the Polish garage door market, but the number of manufacturers reckoned across the country amounts to over twenty. The leading positions are occupied by: Wiśniowski, Krispol, Legbud, Bigtor, DK-Prof. The major importers include: Hörmann, Novoferm and Normstahl. Sectional doors are also imported from China, Lithuania, Russia, the USA and Canada. Additionally, local markets are served by a considerable group of small traffic door “assemblers”, which use off-the-shelf components. Controlled quality The garage door sales system in Poland is similar to that of windows. Manufacturers normally supply their products to the dealer sales network, which serves the retail market. The largest suppliers do not provide end customer service, unless the investment in question is serious (worth several hundred thousand or million). There are traffic door distributors on the market that operate separately or within a purchasing group. The latter include Astrum and GP System. Apart from customer service in their own outlets, they resell traffic doors to smaller trading and assembly companies. All garage doors marketed in Poland need to be manufactured in accordance with the PN-EN 13241-1:2005 standard “Traffic doors. Product standard. Part 1: Products without fire resistance and smoke resistance properties”. CE mark declarations and designations Estimated turnover of enterprises on the garage door market in Poland (mln PLN). Wiśniowski Hörmann Krispol DK-Prof. Normstahl Novoferm Big Tor Legbud Beditom 0 10 100 200 300 Seen up close It is enough to go through housing estates developed ten-odd years ago in Poland to see that tilt-up doors prevailed at that time. Customers chose the cheapest option: vertically ribbed brown or white panel. Some decided to purchase a more expensive solution with thermally insulated leaf. One can hardly find traffic doors with a tilt-up leaf made of troughed sheet in new buildings, where the garage constitutes a part of the residential whole. It has been replaced with sectional doors opened upward. Tilt-up and carriage doors are used mainly in detached garages and utility buildings nowadays. The breakthrough has taken place over the past 10 years, most probably as a result of the rising prices of energy and changing price relations. A typical sectional door is only slightly more expensive than a thermally insulated tilt-up door, at the same time outrivaling it with parameters that are important to the customer. What counts for the user now is high thermal performance, appropriate design and passage dimensions. These expectations are best satisfied by the sectional door. Its high thermal performance and sound reduction index are a consequence of the used door panel components. These are 40 mm, 42 mm or 45 mm thick segments made of double steel sheet, filled with polyurethane foam. Movable connections between sections are insulated with sponge. Side gaskets insulate the joint of the traffic door’s panel with overhead door tracks, and horizontal ones – joints with the header and the flooring. Sectional doors only slightly reduce the clear passage of the traffic door opening. They do not need free space in front of the garage, unlike tilt-up and carriage doors. They work easier and are safer than the tilt-up doors. The shape of the traffic door opening is irrelevant – they fit rectangular-, trapezoid- and arch-shaped openings. Several door track systems allow the FORUM INTERNATIONAL WINDOW AND DOOR JOINERY space in front of the garage. Therefore, it is increasingly less often used in Polish houses. There are situations where the only way to close the garage is the roll-up door installed on the façade. It happens in buildings where there is no header or gas and central heating pipes run under the ceiling. If the customer wishes then an automatic door, he or she has no other option but to use an external roll-up door. This solution is the most expensive one among the presented ones. It has a lot of drawbacks, e.g. poor thermal performance and vulnerability of the door panel to crack. adjustment of the traffic door to the installation conditions in the garage. Each supplier’s offer includes sectional doors with narrow and wide horizontal ribs, with embossed raised panels, and without ribs (flush). Additionally, asymmetrical horizontal ribs, vertical ellipses and the so-called microwave are available. It is possible to fill the traffic door panel with wood. As recently as a few years ago, the standard in sectional doors was external surface in the form of woodgrain structure – imitating unplaned wood. Currently, customers more frequently choose smooth surface obtained as a result of veneering the sheet with the renolit film, which is identical to the one used in PVC windows and doors. It enables the customer to perfectly match all exterior joinery components. The most popular colours are golden oak and walnut. A slightly less frequently chosen colour is mahogany. Greys are also becoming fashionable, most of all anthracite and other wood imitating veneers: dark oak, winchester, macore. Sectional doors can be fitted with windows, pass doors and decorative items, but such accessories are rarely ordered. Electric drives are becoming a standard, in turn, in particular in large traffic doors, designed for garages with two parking spaces. The most popular garage automation suppliers are: Nice, Faac, Somfy, Came, Key, Beninca. Apart from upward opened traffic doors, also side opened sectional doors are available. Despite many advantages, customers are not yet interested in them. More clearance Tilt-up doors are currently chosen most often by such customers that have detached garages without heating. They have no particular requirements as to the door’s thermal performance and tightness. They do not expect sophisticated design. The traffic door must be 12 relatively cheap, functional and durable. Most popular colours are brown or white, but a traffic door can be bought at a similar price in a dozen or so colours from RAL or BTX colour charts, and against an extra payment – in golden oak and walnut woodgrain veneers. The standard is narrow vertical ribs, but horizontal and the socalled herringbone ribs are also possible. Tilt-up doors can be fitted with an electrical drive, the same as for sectional doors. In the case of small traffic door openings, an argument against buying a tilt-up door is the considerable reduction of clear passage. The utility functions of the (single- or double-leaf) carriage door installed on the outside are similar to those of the tilt-up door, but it allows maintaining the full clear passage. However, it also has a significant flaw: it needs more Garage forecasts Judging by the changes occurring in the last years, it can be concluded that the dominance of sectional doors will be reinforced, all the more so that manufacturers are continuously enriching their designs. There are already several dozen woodgrain colours as well as the whole RAL colour chart available, together with special effects such as: pearly, metallised, fluorescent. The customer will easily find a sectional door with wood skin or imitating an old coachhouse door. Because the thermal performance of such traffic doors has reached a level comparable with windows, the stage of struggle for thermal installation is likely to come soon. Some people are already looking for a possibility to thermally insulate the joint of door frame with the wall. The action which will be probably enforced by the market on the manufacturers will be the improvement of anti-lift-off systems. If there are more and more often cars worth several hundred thousand zlotys parking in Polish garages, maybe it is worth dealing with this? WIESŁAW KLIMCZAK FORUM INTERNATIONAL WINDOW AND DOOR JOINERY ALUMINIUM ATTACK Crisis in the construction industry is often written about and discussed. Hence, it is worth considering whether the crisis affected also aluminium structure suppliers. The results of the largest companies operating in the aluminium construction system industry seem to contradict that. Aluprof, the top supplier on the Polish market, recorded a considerable sales growth over the past few years: by 19 pct in 2011 and 11 pct in 2012, thus increasing its market share to circa 40 per cent. Does it mean that the construction market in Poland is not that bad off after all? Let us note that prices of aluminium raw materials were high in 2011. During the first two quarters of the year, the average aluminium price on the London Stock Exchange amounted to over USD 2,400 per ton. It was not until December that the price dropped below USD 2,000 per ton. The downward trend persisted through 2012 but price fluctuations were significantly weaker. This trend has continued this year. It also worth emphasising that the aluminium industry is vulnerable to exchange rate fluctuations. In this case, the years 2011 and 2012 could be favourable to Polish companies, which – offering their products at prices in zlotys – were able to boldly compete with Western European companies. This is reflected in the structure of the Polish market, where Aluprof, a Polish supplier, is the leader, and the further positions have been occupied by Ponzio, Yawal and Aliplast for a few years now. Another major player from among the top five, Reynaers from Belgium, cannot consider the past years successful. However, Schüco, a well-known German manufacturer which mainly relies on sales for facilities (the commercial market), recorded a turnover increase in 2011. The 2012 results were worse than expected, yet Wicona, another German supplier, could regard 2012 as very good year. A significant sales growth was noticeable in Yawal, a Polish joint-stock company, in 2011. The turnover in the aluminium system segment reached nearly PLN 95m. The increase exceeded 15 per cent. In 2012, the turnover was at a level similar to the previous year but the company recorded a considerable growth in the sales profitability ratio. It could seem that the fact that Poland was a host country of the UEFA European Football Championship had a significant impact on business results in the period 2011–2012. This is because the lion’s share of orders addressed to companies specialised in supplying architectural aluminium systems were placed by the public sector. It is clear, however, that much has been going on in the aluminium industry in the past few years even if disregarding the Championship. What contributes to its development is the tightening of the requirements established for energy efficiency of space dividers and the development of modern construction technologies. Increasingly more frequently, project owners recommend the Green Building certification process in the case of newly constructed facilities. Schüco, a German supplier of aluminium systems for construction, has been promoting its products with the Green Technology slogan – currently Energy3 – for several years now. It offers comprehen- sive solutions with this respect, from energy-efficient building shells to thermal energy recovery and use systems (solar collectors, photovoltaics, heat pumps). This is related to the development of traditional glazed aluminium space dividers; HI (High Insulation) and SI group products: the FW50+HI façade, AWS75SI, AWS90SI+ group windows and doors, have become a standard. Wicona, another German aluminium system manufacturer operating on the Polish market, promotes similar solutions. It may be much less recognisable than Schüco but its products are characterised by equally high qualitative and functional properties – these are intelligent multifunctional Wictec TEmotion façades, Wictec 50HI mullion and transom façades with high thermal performance, or the new EVO window line (Wicline 77HI). Another Western supplier has similar product lines. Reynaers has complemented its offer with the new CS104 window and door system. The major top shelf products have been CW50HI façades and CS86HI windows thus far. What is also noticeable is the trend to invoke seemingly old ideas, such as dual windows. The modern solutions allowing good thermal parameters are also thoroughly aesthetic as they fulfil even the strictest requirements imposed by architects. It is worth mentioning here products by Schüco (AWS105CC.HI), Wicona (Wicline 125, TOP-Window), and Reynaers (CS77VF). An undeniable advantage of this type of solutions is also good noise abatement and the possibility to insert window blinds between sashes. Modern aluminium structures are not only thermal protection but also strive for the biggest possible glazing surface. Although it seems difficult to reconcile, the development of modern technologies is quickly progressing also in this area – a triple glazing unit characterised by extremely high parameters is already a standard. No one is surprised by Ug at the level of 0.5W/m2K, at the same time satisfying strict requirements concerning the selection of luminous energy, acoustic and anti-burglary parameters. Although the technical capabilities of aluminium structures are still a limitation to a large extent, their manufacturers make attempts to rise to these challenges. A façade with glass weighing 500 kg? An openable window weighing 200 kg? Here you go – these are individual solutions but possible! What may help overcome the limitations in this case is the introduction of vacuum insulated glass for batch manufacturing and sale – the weight of the glass pane will no longer play the crucial role in limiting the load-carrying capacity of structural components. This will permit the implementation of boldest ideas of designers and architects. 13 FORUM INTERNATIONAL Photo: Magdalena Rocka WINDOW AND DOOR JOINERY How do Polish manufacturers and other competitors look against the presented Western companies? The development of Polish systems is astounding. Aluprof has introduced modern segment-based façades for sales. Additionally, it puts special emphasis on thermal parameters of its solutions. It promoted MB-86ST/SI/Aero window system and MB-TT50 façades, which aroused much interest, at the 2011 exhibition in Munich. It also develops new MB-SR50N façade systems, which enable the application of triple glazing units, including MB-SR50N Efekt semi-structural façades. Yawal also makes effort to keep up with competitors, which is proved by new TM77HI series windows and FA50N mullion and transom façade, which are characterised by high thermal protection. The remaining major market players also develop their products. Ponzio has extended its window & door system offer by modifying the existing PE78 system by new thermal solutions – PE78HI. The situation is similar in the case of façades: the PF152 system has been supplemented with PF152HI, a system with increased thermal performance. Aliplast has an equally broad, if not richer, offer: the Superial window & door systems have been supplemented with new solutions – the Star system, which can compete with Reynaers’s CS104 or Schüco’s AWS90SI+ systems in terms of incorporation depth, or the MC Passive series mullion and transom walls. The same trend is observable even in the case of the “novice” on the Polish market, Blyweert Aluminium: basic systems are supplemented with technological novelties. Its offer includes modern façades of Hera line and innovative Triton HI window systems, which are based on the spider technology. It needs to be added that Blyweert Aluminium patented this system and 14 its production will be launched owing to a European Union subsidy. What determines the major trends in commercial construction finds its application also in single-family construction. The individual customer is well-educated and highly demanding today. One can notice a tendency of superseding now popular materials for incorporating glass panes, i.e. PVC and wood, with aluminium. Thanks to its lightness, durability and aesthetics, it is increasingly more frequently used in single-family houses, and in the so-called passive houses. Aluminium, apart from the properties enumerated above, is characterised by high resistance to weather conditions and corrosion, and ensures fire protection. It is no longer associated with a “cold” material and it is applied to the solutions listed above: aluminium windows are energy-efficient and they ensure the maintenance of appropriate thermal performance coefficients. Along with traditional incorporation, aluminium is used to an increasingly greater extent in sliding doors and lift & slide doors. The most popular products on the Polish market include the following systems: Schüco’s ASS70HI, Reynaers’ CP155/155-LS, and Aluprof’s MB-77HS. Modern fittings allow the manufacturing of very large doors, weighing often more than 300 kg. Thus, the concept of “going out of the living room to the garden” becomes quite realistic – the boundary between the house and the garden becomes blurred. The situation on the so-called prime market is completely different: what is sold best in multi-family and commercial construction is still rather poor structures in terms of thermal solutions, which, however, meet all applicable standards. These are mostly systems with incor- poration depth of 60-65 mm, which all major system suppliers have on offer, as well as vertical enclosures without thermal breaks. Fire divisions are also popular. This segment has been dominated by steel systems to date (Jansen). The dynamic development of the sector of fire resisting aluminium products means greater competition and, what follows, a decrease of prices for finished goods. So far, the main focus of the fire resistance research area has been on showcase and door structures and mullion and transom façades in EI15/30/45/60 class. What we observe today is a trend of extending the fire classification from 60 min (on the German market – over 90 min) – to 120 min. Such products are already offered by Sapa, a Swedish company which has long specialised in fire resisting solutions (the Thermo 92 EI 120 system), and Jansen (the Economy E 120 system). EI120 fire classification is also held by Polish manufacturers: Aluprof (MB-118EI) and Yawal (Fire Block TM90EI). In addition, a group of products intended for application to glass roofs in the following fire resistance classes is dynamically developing: RE30/REI30 (e.g. Jansen VISS Fire TVS, Aluprof MB-SR50/50N EI, Yawal FA50 Dach REI30). As can be seen, Polish companies are trying to equal their Western competitors also in this field. It is not surprising then that they are more and more bold in entering the area that has been closed to them so far, and they are exporting their engineering ideas successfully. It is noticeable that – according to the official sales report for 2011 and 2012 prepared by Aluprof, the largest Polish company belonging to Kęty Group – the export value increased by 25 pct in 2011 in comparison to 2010, and by 9 pct in 2012 relative to the previous year. The major area of its export activities covers the Czech Republic, Slovakia, Ukraine, Hungary, Great Britain, Germany, the Netherlands, Romania and Belgium. Yawal is interested in a similar market. The export sales of this company accounted for c. 19 pct of its total last year’s sales. What arises from the examples discussed above is that the aluminium structures industry is systematically developing. Polish system suppliers launch new products to the market in order to meet the expectations of increasingly more demanding consumers, both commercial and individual ones, in Poland and abroad. Moreover, Poles offer them at affordable prices. It is a perfect starting point for export development, especially that the first half of 2013 is characterised by a domestic sales drop, while slow upturn is observable on foreign markets. This trend is used, for example, by Polish Aluprof, which increased export by 17 pct in the first half of the year. LESZEK KARPIENIA FORUM INTERNATIONAL WINDOW AND DOOR JOINERY SHADE ON FAÇADES The primary function and at the same time a great advantage of glazed façade surfaces is providing access of sunlight – a natural energy source – to building interiors. However, building users would sometimes abandon this primary function for a while – e.g. when projecting a film or on a hot day. Nowadays, when energy efficiency of buildings is promoted with great conviction and ordered in major legal acts which regulate the construction market, it is worth contemplating a more conscious and targeted direction of sunlight into building interiors. Solar shading devices being an integral part of extensive façade systems enable effective regulation of sunlight flow by deflecting or absorbing it. External solar shading devices prove best in terms of providing thermal comfort. They block access of infrared radiation before it enters and warms the building interior. Outside they are exposed to any destructive weather conditions. In large-scale facilities, access to solar shading devices and the façades protected by them is also important. The catalogue of available solutions is extensive. The choice includes exterior louvers formed in more durable materials than those used for internal louvers, but the principle of operation is the same. A popular solution is the brise soleil, which may assume the form of side strips, single items above windows or sets of strips on façades. The spectrum of material solutions is wide – brise soleils can be made of glass components, perforated sheets, membranes, wood profiles or commercial aluminium profiles, available in various finishes, which constitute a structural supplement of typical curtain walls. 16 Photo: Piotr A. Wasiak in which the operation of individual modules should be synchronised, the difficulty scale increases. Of course, it is not necessary to employ risky solutions for a particular facility. In the majority of projects, it is sufficient to use standard products, such as louvers or integral venetian blinds. Widening the glass spacer to 22 mm in the insulating glass unit enables placing a complete self-sufficient blind assembly inside the hermetic glazing unit. Components inside the glazing unit ensure effective solar protection, they are not exposed to destructive weather conditions and do not require cleaning. Brise soleils integrated with photovoltaic cells are used increasingly more often. Also durable textile roller blinds can be chosen – they reduce overwarming, provide visual comfort in rooms, at the same time ensuring good visibility outside. Interior insolation can be also affected by the shape itself of the façade, which is made of concave modules and convex modules shading the latter, and all this thanks to the use of typical profiles for angular joints. Screens mounted in the glazing cavity or in the crevice inside the double-skin wall are also capable of protecting against excess light and heat effectively. However, they are very expensive, like other complex systems; their operation and maintenance requirements are also high. Any damage occurring in the isolated, often hermetically sealed, building component is a serious problem to be solved. Faults, which may escalate, can thwart the entire effort by designers and builders of the solar shading façade. When they are constructed in large-size walls, The whole attention can be drawn to glass which fills the curtain wall. The use of solar control glazing units ensures permeation of a specified percentage of a given type of radiation in all conditions, without the possibility to adjust it. However, completely different capabilities are provided by the employment of active electrochromic glazing. Visible light transmittance can be smoothly adjusted with use of electrochromic glass panes within the range from 62 pct to 2 pct; the heat gain value can be similarly affected. However, electrochromic glass panes are unlikely to be seen soon in average developments. Although their manufacturers present electrochromic glass as a product that brings large savings (reduction of HVAC systems in the building and the possibility to abandon other solar shading devices), it should be emphasised that the price of active glazing is multiple times as high as the price of standard glass panes. *** Solar screens are to be seen on buildings in Poland but this sight is not as common as in southern Europe. Poland is not Spain, where the sun shines for over 300 days a year in seaside regions. Certainly the climate in Poland is not favourable to the use of such façade-supplementing components. Insolation is not uniform on the area of Poland. Residents of Lubelskie and Pomerania regions can anticipate c. 1600 sunny hours a year, while Silesians can count on 1300 such hours. The number of sunny days is not a simple reflection of the hour balance, which takes into account even momentary sunny spells. In addition, the image of climate is further complicated by its variability and unpredictability – such seasons happen when it is gloomy and bleak and no single sun ray penetrates thick clouds. In Poland, solar screens have the opportunity to fulfil their primary function mainly in the summer season, while during the major part of the year they constitute only a spectacular supplement of the façade. Occupants of rooms with western exposure, under glass roofs, are perfectly aware that excessive sunlight can be of exceptional nuisance. SYLWIA MELON-SZYPULSKA WINDOW MARKET IN POLAND 2010-2012.
