Upgrade of the Shopping Mall in Gdańsk Zaspa
Warsaw, 14 March 2016
Press Release
Upgrade of the Shopping Mall in Gdańsk Zaspa District Nears
Completion
The upgrade of one of the oldest commercial centres in Gdańsk, ETC Gdańsk, is nearing
completion. No later than April, customers will be shopping in the refitted centre, which is
to be renamed Galeria Zaspa.
The modernisation project initiated by Capital Park and Akron Group in July 2015 has
entered its final phase. The finishing and arrangement works are underway and the
refurbished space will welcome tenants and customers in early April. The existing ETC
property has changed beyond recognition. The interior has been restructured, the layout of
premises and traffic routes has been rearranged. The commercial space has been brought in
line with the current market standards. The load-bearing structure of the building has been
reinforced and the façade has been revamped. Several new additions will make shopping an
even more convenient experience. The shopping mall has new sets of escalators, as well as
elevators. More space within the property has been opened up to enlarge the alleys and
create a leisure zone equipped with cosy sofas. The direct surroundings of the shopping mall
are going green. Shrubbery has been planted in the entire area around the property.
Customers will have access to a car park with 215 parking spaces, as well as bicycle racks.
The property has been upgraded to provide access to persons with disabilities.
“Galeria Zaspa will become the destination of daily convenient shopping for the
inhabitants of the Zaspa district as well as the neighbouring housing estates. We will
gradually expand the commercial and service offer of the mall to address the day-today needs of shoppers,” said Marcin Juszczyk, Capital Park Investment Director.
The upgraded Galeria Zaspa will offer approximately 8,800 square meters housing 37
outlets: 24 on the ground floor, 13 on the top floor, as well as three commercial isles located
within the common space. Some of the tenants remained open throughout the duration of
the upgrade project within temporary commercial spaces situated in the car park next to the
property. They will soon open shop in a new format. The tenants will include popular nationwide brands: the hypermarket Intermarche, the drugstore Rossmann, the store RTV EURO
AGD, the confectionary Sowa, the fashion store Textil Market, the pizzeria Domino’s Pizza, as
well as local and regional chains including the pet shop ZOO Karina, the baker’s Szydłowski,
the delicatessen Camellia, the fashion boutique Exxelent. Galeria Zaspa will also feature
other amenities including the fitness gym Calypso and the medical services centre Centrum
Diagnostyczne Synewo. Customers will also have access to other services including a
newsstand, a pharmacy, a currency exchange, a florist’s, a tailor’s, a drycleaner’s, a mobile
phone repairman’s, an e-cigarette stand, a photographer’s, and a key cutting service.
When the shopping mall opens after the upgrade, its name will change from ETC to Galeria
Zaspa.
“The new name makes reference to the location of the property in the Zaspa district.
Besides, the Polish term ‘galeria’ is a much closer counterpart to the profile of the
property after the upgrade. Galeria Zaspa represents a completely new quality: it is a
state-of-the-art commercial property for the Zaspa district and the neighbouring
housing estates,” said Marcin Juszczyk.
The current location of Galeria Zaspa has a long, interesting history that goes back to the
1820s. A Prussian military training centre opened on the site in 1820. A hundred years later,
a new building was erected as an airplane hangar. Its function later changed more than
once, from an airport to a bus station to a shopping mall. Galeria Zaspa fosters the history of
the place and builds upon it architecturally. The original shape of the building – that of an
airplane hangar, as well as its roofing have been preserved. Structural elements within the
mall are stylised to look like airplane wings, and the walls present murals based on historical
photographs. Galeria Zaspa’s new logo also showcases the history of the location: it features
the airplane wing motif as a reference to the original function of the building.
The modernisation project was developed by the architectural studio Pracownia
Architektoniczna Alicja i Andrzej Andrzejewscy based in Gdynia. The general contractor of
the construction project is Budimex.
