"Camp Mementos from Krystyna Żywulska: the Making of a Satirist and Songwriter in Auschwitz-Birkenau" Barbara Milewski Swarthmore College Faculty Talk April 30, 2009 Wymarsz przez brame Krystyna Żywulska, February 1944 March out through the Gate (ending fragment) Bo przyjdzie wnet nasz pierwszy maj, wolności maj, swobody maj! And soon will come Our first of May, May of freedom, Freedom of May! For the wrongs you've done, A million widows Will join the song's rhythm, A song without words. And for our pain, Our mill of torment Action must come And only action. The time will come, When for your march We will charge at you Without command Butcher you heartlessly, Beat you no end Music will also play for you. Za tyle cierpień, You will howl, You’ve had enough, But from spite we'll not stop, But from spite we'll not stop! For so many victims, So much blood You will all pay Only you! For so much suffering, tyle rózg, w serca wam nóż i kule w mózg! So many floggings, A knife through your hearts And a bullet to the head! For so much pain, So much hardship, Daggers through the breast, Bayonets through the neck! For so much sorrow, sighing, tears, May you all die like dogs! And so that the world may breath a sigh of relief We will rub out every trace of you! Wtedy dopiero się rozśpiewa W rytmie wolności: lewa, lewa. Only then will we sing aloud To the beat of freedom: left, left. Photo of Wala Konopska. The sun is shining, The birds are singing, Children are playing Tree branches, swaying. Młodszych już wzięli podczas selekcji, a starsi idą do "dezynfekcji". Younger ones they've taken, During selection, The elderly are going For "disinfection." Life is so colorful Lovely and plentiful No one would want To part with this world. [….] [….] Drogą daleką łąką nad rzeką w skwarze i trudzie idą ludzie. //:On a long journey, By meadow, near river, In heat and hardship, The people are walking.:// Spójrzcie wokoło? Czy nie widzicie? Strumyczek szemrze i rosną kwiaty, Look all around you? Do you not see? The stream ripples, The flowers grow. [….] //:"Lamps" are burning, Rags are burning, [You're only imagining a smell.] Is any one of you Honestly scared?:// […] [….] Excursion, cont’d A tam już praca wre diabelska, Po "dezynfekcji" leżą cielska. There the devil's work is already in full swing, After "disinfection," bodies lay on the ground. Ciężka robota. Żar i spiekota. Grzebać, sortować, mądrze "szpaltować": dwa ciała grube, a jedno dziecka - oto robota iście niemiecka. Difficult work, Sweltering heat, Grubbing and sorting, Thoughtfully "splitting:" Two hefty bodies, And one of a child— Now that is a job Truly German. One only has to Watch very closely, How the fat melts, And the meat cooks, The shovel's movement Makes the bones crack, Bodies sizzle, Bones stick out: Children's bones Innocent bones! ! ! [Here, at the séance of horrors,] [Here, things went mad,] A bloody crimson Shot up in the air, [Death donned its finest:] HELL!!! Bunchikov & V. Nechaev, 1937 The morning paints with a tender light, Walls of the ancient Kremlin, The Soviet lands are getting up, With the sunrise. Cool morning air runs through one's collar, Noise on the streets is getting louder, Good morning, my dear city, Heart of my Motherland ! Refrain: Exuberant, And mighty, Not conquered by anyone, My country, My Moscow You are the most beloved ! Marsz o Wolności March of Freedom (fragment) Text: Krystyna Żzwulska, 1944 Music: Dmitri & Daniel Pokrass, 1937 Performed by Stanisława Lempart Gąskowa Takie miejsce jest na świecie, To nie bajka ani sen, W którym dzieje się, czy wiecie, Wiele makabrycznych scen. Pięć kominów dymi górą, Jak przeklętz jakiś czar, Z wnętrza bucha krew purpurą, Niepojęty. Strasny żar. Such a place exists on earth, No fairytale or dream is this, In which there happen—did you know?— Many dreadful, macabre scenes. Five chimneys send up smoke, Like some kind of damned magic, From inside spouts crimson blood, An unimaginable, horrible fire. Refren: Więc pasiak zdejm i trepy zrzuć, Zgolaną głowę w górę wynieś! Wesoła tak do domu wróć, Na ustach miej radości śpiew! Refrain: So take off your striped clothes and kick off your clogs, Your shaved head raise high! Merrily return home this way, With a joyful song on your lips! [....] Żegnaj straszny Oświęcimiu I okrutne Birkenau. Po barakach pustych w zimie. Wiatr żałośnie będzie wiał, [….] Farewell, horrible Auschwitz And savage Birkenau, Through the empty barracks in winter Only a plaintive wind will blow. Żyje się raz (1968) Text: Krystyna Żywulska Music: Adam Markiewicz Performed by Sława Przybylska You Live Once Ładny chłopiec z profilu i en face, Niech mnie rozczula, niech mnie przytula, bo; Żyje się raz, żyje się raz, żyje się tylko raz. Jak wiadomo, nie stoi w miejscu czas. Nice looking guy, from the side and en face, He shouldn’t waste time, he should embrace me, ‘cause: You live once, you live once, you only live once. Obviously, time does not stand still. It didn’t last long, he found another, ‘cause; You live once, you live once, you only live once. How false his bass voice sounded: Forgive me darling, this is goodbye, what can I say… You live once, you live once, you only live once. You Live Once, cont'd Pomyślałam: - Nie odkręcić może gaz? - Tęsknię i wzdycham, żal mi, do licha, bo... I thought: maybe turn on the gas? I’m longing and sighing, regretting, damn it, ‘cause… You live once, you live once, you only live once. Gra, jak w kartach - tu dwójka, a tam as... Like a game of cards, here a deuce, there an ace… Sometimes that’s how it is: someone wins, so; You live once, you live once, you only live once Whether with an empty hand, or one filled with gold. Ból spływa częściej, a rzadziej szczęście, choc; Pain comes more often, less so good fortune, though: Żyje się raz, żyje się raz, żyje się tylko raz. You live once, you live once, you only live once. The trees are blooming, and forever the forest sings, Sun plays with shade, love with suffering, and; You live once, you live once, you only live once.
