Juliusz Słowacki, Ksià˝´ Niezłomny The steed I took to be my mount Was free in stirrup and saddle-seat, The raging tempest was his sire, His dam a firebrand-flame: for he shall be Well-matched by whirlwind and by flames of fire, His peers roaring in equal ancestry. Juliusz Słowacki, Ksià˝´ Niezłomny – a free translation into Polish of Calderón’s El príncipe constante Zofia Raczkowska. Dla bliskich i przyjaciół – Zosia. Z pozoru delikatna i, wydawałoby si´, krucha; a jednak niezwykle silna, zarówno ciałem, jak i duchem. Zofia Raczkowska. Zosia to loved ones and friends. She looks delicate and as if fragile, but in fact she’s exceptionally strong, both in body and in spirit. Z chwilà kiedy brała aparat do r´ki, zapominała o wszystkim. Experts in the field know very well how much physical stamina you need to practise outdoor photography, especially if your subject is moving all the time. Alas, Zosia is no longer doing photography, her state of health does not allow it, but we all remember her slender figure, with a mass of dark dishevelled hair and gleaming eyes in a face engrossed in thought, running after a herd of horses with a huge camera that in her hands seemed as light as a feather. In continual motion, physically extremely agile, from her earliest years she was a horsewoman and loved skiing. But her greatest strength was her extraordinary zeal and determination. As soon as she got hold of a camera she’d be oblivious to everything else. It was a kind of forgetfulness, a “madness” as she said herself. Nothing else would matter. To take a view that had drawn her attention she’d find the most bizarre places to mount her camera; it could just as well be a ladder, a barn roof, a tree, a lake, rocks or mountains, or a hayrick, where she’d patiently wait for the morning mists and sunrise. Fotografià Zosia zainteresowała si´ ju˝ w latach 60. ubiegłego stulecia, a to dzi´ki m´˝owi, znanemu fotografikowi Mirosławowi Raczkowskiemu, z którym tworzyli i tworzà zgrany team. Poczàtkowo były to fotografie prasowe, fotoreporta˝e, lubiła te˝ fotografowaç otoczenie, ˝ycie rodzinne, domowe zwierz´ta. Pierwszego konia sfotografowała w 1962 roku w Stadzie Ogierów w Białce. Odtàd ruszyła lawina; zacz´ła jeêdziç konno, porywał Jà ruch, p´d, konie w galopie, w skoku. Zdj´cia Zosi szybko znalazły uznanie w Êrodowisku jeêdzieckim i wÊród hodowców koni. Horses have always fascinated her, something she simply adored. Since she had spent most of her childhood in the country, horses were an everyday thing, close at hand and touchable. Zosia became interested in photography already in the 1960s, thanks to her husband the well-known photographer Mirosław Raczkowski. They were and still are a well-knit team. But, as she says, “horses were always my thing.” Originally she did press photos, photo reports, and liked to photograph her surroundings, family life, domestic animals. She took her first photo of a horse at the Białka Stallion Depot in 1962. From then on it snowballed; she started riding, she was thrilled by movement, speed, horses galloping, horses jumping. Zosia’s photos soon won acclaim from riders and breeders. The gates to the biggest stud-farms in Poland opened up to her, offering a singular photographic studio to the ace of the photographic arts that she undeniably is. She seems to have drawn the same pleasure from photographing horses of all kinds of breeds: sweet little Shetland ponies amid dandelions in bloom; rare-coloured piebalds galloping through rainbow-hued splashes of water; mouse-dun Polish Koniks, Tarpans at the Popielno reserve; small golden horses with milk-white manes and tails from the Norwegian fjords; or Døles black as night from the highland pastures of Norway. But Zosia’s greatest love and genuine passion is the Arabian breed. Her special sensibility to the beauty and unique qualities of this breed have made her a virtuoso photographer of Arabian horses. To capture the very essence of the matter, let’s quote a description of the Arab horse written over a century ago, by one of the breed’s greatest connoisseurs, Zygmunt Sosnowski: “Take a look at this fine steed! What a lovely head, what a soft ear! His eyes alert, beautiful, wise, sparkling! (…). Przy najognistszym temperamencie uległoÊç jeêdêcowi bez granic, odwaga i przytomnoÊç na wszystkie przeszkody, osobliwsza zwinnoÊç w ka˝dym ruchu!”. with fire! How lightly he trots, how gracefully he moves! What an excellent tail carriage! What magnificence there is in this noble animal! Who does not admire the honest and valiant nature of the Arabian horse as a steed! Even the most fiery-tempered of them is absolutely submissive to his rider, brave and alert to all obstacles, and singularly lithe in every move!” Need we say more? Aren’t the horses Zosia depicts just like this description? Araber Pferde, wydany w 1976 roku w Niemczech. Bodaj˝e lwià cz´Êç swojego twórczego ˝ycia Zosia poÊwi´ciła arabom z Janowa. Obdarzona niezwykłà wra˝liwoÊcià, tam właÊnie czuła ten szczególny klimat: nieska˝onà ludzkà r´kà i obecnoÊcià przyrod´, bezkresne łàki, bociany, sarny pod lasem wychodzàce o zachodzie słoƒca, meandry połyskliwego Bugu i tajemnicze jeziorka pokryte rz´sà – raj wodnego ptactwa, rytm zmieniajàcych si´ pór roku – a przede wszystkim wolnoÊç, jakà mo˝e daç mieszkaƒcom tej ziemi tylko Matka Natura. Zosia’s first encounter with Arabian horses was at the Janów Podlaski Stud, which is regarded as the Mecca for the breed. Later she saw other Polish stud farms which breed Arabians: Michałów, Kurozw´ki, and the most recent one at Białka. A look through Zosia’s abundant photographic work relates the story of these places, their successes, their staff and their locations, but above all their horses, the Polish Arabians which have built up the country’s reputation for horses worldwide, largely thanks to Zosia and the unique portraits she has conjured up with an artist’s fascination through the eye of the camera. She presented the portraits of famous Arabian mares and stallions, and Bandola, Pilarka and Algeria, the Queens of Janów, and above all her favourite Bandos, in the album Araber Pferde published in 1976 in Germany. Those pictures will go down in history. Perhaps the greatest part of Zosia’s creative life has been devoted to the Arabians of Janów. Here her rare sensibility has most fully read the singular atmosphere of Nature unsullied by human hand or presence, vast stretches of meadowland, storks, deer at the edge of the forest at sunset, the meanders of the glistening river, and the mysterious mist-covered lakes offering a birds’ paradise, the rhythm of shifting seasons, and above all the freedom that only Mother Nature gives the inhabitants of this world. KONIE_R1_02MAY_BITFNT_doSRP_Layout 1 11-05-02 19:50 Page 16 W okresie „arabskim” Zosi tam właÊnie, w Janowie, powstały Jej najlepsze i najpi´kniejsze dzieła. Łàczàca Jà serdeczna przyjaêƒ z wieloletnim, zasłu˝onym dyrektorem stadniny Andrzejem Krzyształowiczem, była inspiracjà dla wielu wspaniałych pomysłów Zosi i powstania cyklu „Ludzie i konie”. Do historii przeszły ju˝ słynne, wielokrotnie publikowane portrety dyrektora Krzyształowicza z ukochanymi koƒmi – Algerià i Aloesem. Epokà samà w sobie była prawie 20-letnia współpraca z Centralà Handlu Zagranicznego „Animex” – fotografowanie koni do katalogów słynnej dorocznej janowskiej aukcji „Polish Prestige”. Zosia’s best work was done during her Arabian period at Janów. Her friendship of many years’ standing with Andrzej Krzyształowicz, director of the stud, inspired many of her brilliant ideas like the People and Horses cycle. Her famous, often republished pictures of Director Krzyształowicz with Algeria and Aloes, his favourite horses, have gone down in the annals of photography. Her nearly twenty years of work for the Animex Export Enterprise, making pictures of horses for the catalogue of the annual Polish Prestige Auction at Janów, was in itself an epoch. Working on publicity photographs of horses is an extremely difficult business, especially if the picture is to be even finer than the original subject. We may venture to say that many of the horses Zosia photographed found potential customers even before the auction took place. ObecnoÊç na aukcjach i mo˝liwoÊç prezentacji swoich prac w Janowie owocowały rosnàcym zainteresowaniem z zagranicy i szerokimi kontaktami z hodowcami z całego Êwiata. Plonem cz´stych wyjazdów do Szwecji na zaproszenie czołowych szwedzkich hodowców koni arabskich były jedne z najciekawszych prac w twórczoÊci Zosi. Zacz´ła eksperymentowaç z tłem i kolorem. Powstały wówczas nieprawdopodobnie malarskie, wprost zjawiskowe fotografie: głównie stada koni statyczne lub w ruchu, zmierzchy rozÊwietlone ogromnym zachodzàcym słoƒcem w po˝odze purpurowych i fioletowych chmur, mgły i dymy snujàce si´ nad pastwiskami. Zosia’s attendance and the opportunity to present her work at the Janów auctions generated an increasing amount of contacts and interest from foreign breeders, eventually leading to an important spell in her career, her Scandinavian period. She did some of her most interesting work during her frequent trips to Sweden at the invitation of Swedish breeders of Arabian horses. She started to experiment with backgrounds and colour, producing unbelievably painterly, absolutely exceptional photographs: chiefly of herds of horses still or in motion, dusks illuminated by a huge setting sun in a blaze of purple and violet clouds, mist and smoke hovering over the pastures. Ulubionym w póêniejszym okresie tematem była fascynacja Zosi dzikà i surowà przyrodà Norwegii, gdzie wÊród niedost´pnych masywów skalnych, na skàpych, górskich pastwiskach ˝yły dzikie, wolne konie. A favourite subject in Zosia’s later period was her fascination by the wild and austere landscape of Norway, inhabited by wild, free horses roaming across the sparse highland pastures amid inaccessible mountain crags. KONIE_R1_02MAY_BITFNT_doSRP_Layout 1 11-05-02 19:50 Page 17 Zosia fotografowała przede wszystkim dla siebie; jej prace były spełnieniem marzeƒ, spełnieniem siebie, sposobem na ˝ycie i dà˝eniem ku absolutnemu szcz´Êciu. Zosia’s photographs were made primarily for herself; her work was self-fulfilment to make her dreams come true, her lifestyle and her way to attain bliss. Dzi´ki umiej´tnoÊci obserwacji, wra˝liwoÊci na pi´kno, wyczuciu nastroju i chwili, Zosia wyczarowywała prawdziwe dzieła sztuki, operujàc kamerà jak malarz p´dzlem, i potrafiła dostrzec to, co dla innych zakryte i nieprzewidywalne – dusz´ konia. Któ˝ lepiej oddałby kwintesencj´ macierzyƒstwa – troskliwoÊç i ciepło spojrzenia klaczy na swoje nowo narodzone êrebi´, wesołe zabawy młodzie˝y, wzajemne relacje w stadzie, dum´ i temperament ogiera, spokój klaczy, współzawodnictwo, przyjaêƒ, walk´ i miłoÊç... Niezwykle wa˝ne elementy w fotografiach Zosi to temat, tło, nastrój chwili i Êwiatło. Wszystkie tworzà pi´knà i przejmujàcà kompozycj´. Thanks to her power of observation, her sensitivity to beauty and feel for the atmosphere and moment in time, Zosia conjured up real works of art, applying her camera as the painter applies his brush, able to observe what for others was unobservable and unpredictable – the spirit of the horse. Who could show the essence of maternity better – the warm, loving devotion of a mare looking at her newborn foal – of playful youngsters, mutual relations in the herd, a stallion’s pride and temper, the mares” tranquillity, of competition, friendship, hostility and love… The subject, background, atmosphere and illumination are extremely important components of Zosia’s photos. They go together to make a fine and exciting composition. Dorobek Zofii jest ogromny – tysiàce zdj´ç, wystawy, albumy, kalendarze, katalogi, reklamy, plakaty, wydawnictwa, periodyki, pocztówki. Jej prace sà ozdobà licznych galerii i domów zwykłych ludzi, kochajàcych konie i pi´kno. Niezliczona iloÊç nagród krajowych i mi´dzynarodowych – wÊród nich tych najbardziej presti˝owych – stawiajà Zofi´ poÊród najwybitniejszych twórców fotografii poÊwi´conej zwierz´tom, a koniom w szczególnoÊci. Zofia has done a huge amount of work – thousands of photos for exhibitions, albums, calendars, catalogues, advertisements, posters, publications, periodicals, postcards. Her work is on display in innumerable galleries and the homes of ordinary folk who love horses and are attuned to beauty. A countless collection of accolades, domestic and international, including the most prestigious prizes, ranks Zofia among the most distinguished photographers of animals, particularly of horses. I consider it a great honour and privilege to be able to contribute to the jubilee publication of this fine album to mark the half-century of Zofia Raczkowska’s work in the service of the world’s most magnificent animals – horses.
