luty–wrzesień 2011 Muzeum Otwarte to program wykładów i spotkań w Muzeum Sztuki Nowoczesnej. The Open Museum is a program of lectures and meetings in the Museum of Modern Art in Warsaw. Within the next few months we offer you a series of lectures, meetings, talks, and workshops where, on a variety of levels, we aim to continue our reflection on the notions, tasks, scope, and traditions of modernity, as well as on the critical role of art and culture in contemporary times. The program of the Open Museum has been inspired by Oskar Hansen’s theory of the Open Form. It is in this spirit that we focus on the process of mutual learning which replaces the traditional means of the hierarchical transfer of knowledge. We also draw inspiration on Hansen’s negation of the superiority of specialists and his desire to translate expert knowledge into categories understandable by all. We have no fear of adopting the role of a “public amateur” and as such intruding into the “black boxes” of expert wisdom, dismantling them on behalf of our own public. It is also important for us to work on building a common vocabulary for professionals from different disciplines and facilitating their collaboration. An open museum is a museum of open knowledge. The Open Museum is to be an experiment on many different levels. The series of lectures, thematically extremely diverse, shall be open to corrections, criticism and participation. They are intended to be never closed and constantly seeking new interpretations. Workshops for children and young people have been entrusted to the students and practitioners of Hansen’s tradition. Here the methods of Open Form will be put to a practical test; Wiktor Gutt will conduct CHILDREN’S INITIATIONS, Grzegorz Kowalski will encourage junior high school students to perform the famous exercise COMMON AREA, PRIVATE AREA, while Zbigniew Libera will together with young adults from high schools perform ACTIONS WITH A CAMERA. In the series WHERE IS THE MUSEUM? prepared by Joanna Mytkowska and Sebastian Cichocki, we take the perspective of our newly-established institution to pose questions about the role of a museum. Edwin Bendyk, on the other hand, will devote his CONSPIRACY OF CULTURE series to dwell on the issue of why culture has legitimised neo-liberalism. MISTER WARSAW 50 YEARS LATER, a series of meetings of Tomasz Fudala with the youngest generation of Polish architecture historians and critics, will present phenomena which the two groups deem the most crucial in Polish architecture design of the time of communism. The project continues our focus on architecture, which is of paramount importance for us on account of the debate generated by the future building of our Museum. With two other projects - The performative turn. On the relations between theatre, dance and visual arts by Ana Janevski and Joanna Warsza as well as RE:FORM. BETWEEN CINEMA AND ART by Łukasz Ronduda and Kuba Mikurda we open the Museum up to the realms of theatre, dance and film. The future Museum is designed for a wide public and therefore we want to enter new ter ritories and seek new audiences. We never tire of more philosophical debates about history and the present; this year, in a series of lectures and meetings titled AFTER THE END OF THE PHOTO STORY, Krzysztof Pijarski will address questions from the frontiers of visual arts, photography, and contemporary philosophy. Unlike the program of exhibitions, research or publications of the Museum, the cur rent program of lectures, meetings and workshops is scheduled for only a few months ahead. We try not to adopt long-term assumptions and plans as ongoing questions change too dynamically to be held within a fixed agenda. Apart from the series of lectures, meetings and workshops introduced here, our Museum plans to host many events of which we will keep you posted through the Museum’s website www.artmuseum.pl, via Facebook and museum newsletters, which you can obtain after logging on our website. Everyone is most welcome! Warsztaty dla dzieci i młodzieży zdecydowaliśmy się powierzyć bezpośrednim uczniom i kontynuatorom tradycji Hansenowskiej. Tutaj metody Formy Otwartej zostaną praktycznie przećwiczone: Wiktor Gutt poprowadzi Inicjacje dziecięce, Grzegorz Kowalski zaprosi młodzież gimnazjalną do wykonania słynnego ćwiczenia Obszar wspólny, obszar własny, a Zbigniew Libera wspólnie z młodzieżą licealną zrealizuje Działania z kamerą. Z kolei Edwin Bendyk w cyklu Spisek kultury pyta o to, dlaczego kultura legitymizuje neoliberalizm. Mister Warszawy 50 lat później to seria spotkań Tomasza Fudali z najmłodszym pokoleniem polskich historyków i krytyków architektury — prezentuje najważniejsze dla nich zjawiska w projektowaniu doby PRL-u. First edition of the series of lectures on the mission and future of art museums. Prepared by Joanna Mytkowska and Sebastian Cichocki Joanna Mytkowska — Director of the Museum of Modern Art Sebastian Cichocki — curator at the Museum of Modern Art Joanna Mytkowska — dyrektor MSN Sebastian Cichocki — kurator w MSN Cykl jest poświęcony metodologicznym i ideologicznym zmianom, jakie na przestrzeni ostatnich dekad zaszły w muzeach w Polsce i na świecie. Jerzego Hausnera oraz wiceministra kultury i dziedzictwa narodowego Piotra Żuchowskiego kolejne spotkania z udziałem: A series dedicated to methodological and ideological transformations occurring in museums in Poland and worldwide over the past few decades. We will address the question of why and how contemporary museum have changed and why is it that we are desperately in need of new ones in Poland. We will reflect, among others, on the relations between museums and the economic development of cities, as well as on their political and social roles. We will scrutinise new educational models implemented by art institutions and new visions of constructing art collections. We will discuss the separation of museums of contemporary art from institutions dealing with modern art in the 1970s (widespread in the 1990s) and the develop ment of unprecedented models of cooperation with artists and the public. Invited to discuss these questions will be museum directors, who will share their experience of creating contemporary art institutions, as well as politi cians and economists. The series will be launched by a debate on institu tional changes that have recently taken place in Poland. A debate about new museums established in Poland with the participation of Prof. Jerzy Hausner and Deputy Minister of Culture and National Heritage Piotr Żuchowski (the debate will be held in Polish) 16.03 The following meetings will host: Piotr Piotrowski art historian, professor of Adam Mickiewicz University, in the period 2009–2010 Director of the National Museum in Warsaw Piotra Piotrowskiego historyka sztuki, profesora Uniwersytetu im. Surowiec ponowoczesnego kapitalizmu kognitywnego i zasilających go przemysłów kultury? Skansen narodowych kompleksów? Narzędzie „soft power” w globalnej walce o rządy dusz i hegemonię? Instrument wykluczenia, segregacji i degradacji? It’s the culture, stupid! This motto should hang above every single desk of those who embark on any action with a view to changing, for better or worse, a country, society, or the economy. But what culture? Is it a useful idiot who, along with its mandarins, uncritically legitimises the transformations which it later falls victim to? The material of post-modern cog nitive capitalism and the culture industries fuelling it? A backwater of national complexes? A ‘soft power’ tool of a global struggle for a hold over souls and hegemony? An instrument of exclusion, segregation and degradation? Or rather a space of social inclusion, enhancement of identity and change? Apart from attempting to answer these questions, during these meetings we will take on such questions as the critique of the creative class and the participation or non-participation in culture. First edition of meetings devoted to performative arts prepared by Ana Janevski and Joanna Warsza Ana Janevski — curator at the Museum of Modern Art Joanna Warsza — independent curator of theatre and dance Teatr, performens czy choreografia wchodzą obecnie w intensywny dialog z domeną sztuk wizualnych. Theatre, performance and choreography nowadays enter into an intensive dialog with the visual arts. More and more often we take part in cho reographed exhibitions, lecture-performances, arranged situations, and spectacles. We are witnesses to a phenomenon which has for some years now been defined as the “performative turn”. It is a paradigm present in the humanities and social sciences, consisting in the arrangement of everyday reality and its evaluation through the category of experience. Furthermore, this turn impacts the presence of “live art” in museums and galleries. Our series of meetings explores the interdependencies between theatre, dance, choreography, and the visual arts — from Judson Church and the attempts of democratizing movement via new forms of the “per formance of knowledge”, the role of the audience as partners of artists’ activities, and the use of performative strategies in actions taking place in the shared zone of arts and politics. We will also attempt at working out a common vocabulary of the performative arts. Each meeting has its unique form that pushes the boundaries of a tradi tional educational event. Kino nie istnieje poza swoimi widzialnymi, zmysłowymi formami. Każda forma jest sposobem myślenia, ujmowania świata, uwikłana jest więc w polityczne i etyczne stawki. RE:FORMA. Pomiędzy kinem a sztuką to cykl spotkań z najbar dziej interesującymi formalnie reżyserami polskimi. Form is the essence of film, its inherent medium outside of which it can not exist. Cinema does not exist outside its visible forms available to the senses. Each form is a way of thinking and capturing the world and is thus enmeshed in political and ethical stakes. RE:FORM. BETWEEN CINEMA AND ART is a series of meetings with Polish movie directors applying the most interesting film forms. During our debates with them we will focus on analysing practical and theoreti cal aspects of the film form, both in its professional variation screened in movie theatres and in its artistic, avant-garde incarnation. We will seek moments offering a meeting place for poetics and strategies and analyse clear-cut differences between professional cinema and visual arts. We want to establish a platform of interdisciplinary exchange and encourage film authors to engage in bolder experiments with the image and the narrative, and visual artists to move more consciously within the realm of film. Odmówić aktualności: Susan Meiselas, Alfredo Jaar, Hans-Peter Feldmann, Sarah Charlesworth, On Kawara, Martha Rosler Geografie późnego kapitalizmu: Allan Sekula Krajobraz polityczny: Luc Delahaye, David Goldblatt, Paul Graham, Andreas Gursky Krzysztof Pijarski — a Ph.D. student in the Warsaw University Art History Institute, photographer The title of this series of lectures is a provocation as in fact it not so much announces the demise of picture story but indicates that its established conventions no longer fit the present-day condition of representation. Today more and more often it is not representation that bears a nearly exact resemblance to reality, but it is reality that assumes the form of some kind of deja-vu. While the present and its representations are increasingly closer to one another within time, they are also increasingly autonomous. On the other hand we acquire more knowledge about the world via images. It is therefore vital to scrutinise representation strategies which, moving beyond the simple homothety of an image and its representation, are capable of making complex statements about the world. The lectures focus on those artists who distance themselves from the whirlpool of everyday concerns and, often in a subversive way, try to apply a distanced perspective, unmasking the myth of universal and immediate access to the world. Materią do malowania będą czerwona glina i niebieski pigment, miejsce do działań wydzielone będzie białym płótnem. They will be based on the constant expansion of children’s natural creativity, with the body as the prin cipal medium. Red clay and blue pigment will be used for painting, the area for the activity will be delineated by means of white canvas. with white canvas. By joining in the painting of each other’s faces and bodies, the children will gain autonomy, if only momentarily, with respect to the universe of adults who accompany young humans daily, rain or shine. Apart from an element of natural self-fashioning, this activity will facilitate learning of group com munication. During the workshops the children will create a message which is individualised and yet collective. According to Gutt, CHILDREN’S INITIATIONS are extraordinarily creative; through activity children produce messages that can be defined as increasingly self-conscious and autonomous statements or even works of art evolving via a collaborative process. The workshops are to support the development of young people’s identity, to enhance a critical stand towards oneself and the surrounding reality. Kowalski wrote in the the project’s outline that the objective of the Common Area, Private Area action is the intensive participation in the communication process with out the use of verbal language. Grzegorz Kowalski is a sculptor, performer, author of installations, educator, and art critic. As assistant to Oskar Hansen and Jerzy Jarnuszkiewicz, since the late 1960s he has conducted many classes with the students from the studios of both professors at the Warsaw Academy of Fine Arts. He tried to add a human touch to Hansen’s objective and rationalised method, supplementing it with strongly existential, sensual, subjective, irrational, psychologising, and even spiritual elements. As an educator, like Jarnuszkiewicz he trusted a partner relation between the teacher and the student, a bond based on empathy. Kowalski taught his students to move with utmost sensitivity between the common (public) and the private areas. His partnership-based teaching highlights the importance of particular people, endowed with unique and complex identities. People are more important than purely formal activities in matter and space. Kowalski tried to help people improve their communication with others. These were the underlying assumptions of the authorial project of student classes called ‘Common Area, Private Area’, which the artist has been developing since the academic year 1981–82 until today. Wiktor Gutt is an artist and educator. In the early 1970s he studied in the studio of Oskar Hansen and Jerzy Jarnuszkiewicz at the Warsaw Academy of Fine Arts. Along with a few of other Hansen’s students, he redefined his professor’s idea of the Open Form. Gutt was interested in extra-verbal rather than logocentric and conscious communication. He studied and tried to recreate in art the most fundamental and primordial (akin to the logic of ritual) ways of developing interpersonal ties based on cooperation, the custom of gift and exchange. Wiktor Gutt was the first Polish avant-garde artist to seriously treat children’s creative endeavors. At present he holds lectures and classes for students at the Warsaw Academy of Fine Arts and cooperates on an ongoing basis with the Foundation of St. John of Jerusalem, where he runs workshops for young children. Zbigniew Libera w latach 80. współtworzył najciekawsze środowiska i przedsięwzięcia sztuki niezależnej w Polsce, m.in. W latach 90. They aim at developing a critical atti tude towards the images produced mainly by mass media, such as television. Zbigniew Libera’s workshops with a camera are to teach techniques of resistance to and critique of the contemporary media zone and a possibility of self-organisation via film. They employ avant-garde methods of work with film such as assembling film, independent film, and found footage film. Because of its formal liberty and ideological radicalism, Open Form in film offers ample opportunities. Set free from canons of film narrative, it facilitates a discovery of one’s own language of expression, a language defining one’s own stand vis-a-vis reality. Zbigniew Libera in the 1980s was actively involved in the most interesting circles and projects of independent art in Poland. These were, for instance, Kultura Zrzuty in Łódź, the music group Sternenhoch, the Tango magazine. In the late 1980s, living at Zofia Kulik’s and Przemysław Kwiek’s place, he was one of the first people to familiarise in extenso with the archive of KwieKulik Actions and Co-Actions of the 1970s and the materials concerning Oskar Hansen. According to the art critic Jan S. Wojciechowski, the oeuvre of Hansen, Kulik and Libera develops a certain tradition. In the 1990s Libera was one of the most eminent representatives of the so-called critical art. In 2007 he was invited to head a studio at the Prague Academy of Fine Arts; the studio’s program was a modified method of Activities and Interactions by KwieKulik, Oskar Hansen’s disciples. This teaching method underpins also the workshops in the Museum of Modern Art.
