When Filip finally
decides to open the
letter he received
from overseas, he is

twists. When at the end of the novel Filip is
citing Aristotle's Poetics while Robert
bleeds to death in his brother’s bath tub,
Albahari masterfully and with notorious
irony blends elements of the Greek tragedy
with the comédie humaine.
Inspired by Ludwig Wittgenstein, Aristotle

Serbian-Jewish writer DAVID ALBAHARI
was born in
1948. He has
published nine
collections of
short stories and
eleven novels.
His collection of
stories DESCRIPTION OF DEATH won the
Ivo Andrić Award 1982. His novel BAIT
won the NIN Award 1996, as well as the
Balcanica Award and the Berlin Brücke
Prize. In 1994 he moved to Calgary, Canada, with his wife and two children.
David Albahari’s books are translated into
more than twenty languages and have been
published by Gallimard, Harvill Secker,
Schöfling, dtv, Cossee, Zandonai, and many
others. In 2011 Harcourt and Harvill Secker
published Albahari’s highly acclaimed major work LEECHES — “a masterpiece, a terri-
fic, deliriant monologue on the verge of
insanity” (Die Zeit).

ANDRÉ BRINK,
one of South
Africa’s
most
distinguished
writers,
was
born in 1935.
He had his literary breakthrough with his
novel LOBOLA VIR DIE LEWE in 1964. His
incessant public opposition to apartheid
resulted in a publication ban which led him
to write also in English. He is the author of
more than sixty publications: novels, plays,
travelogues, essays, literary criticism, which
have been translated into thirty languages.
AN INSTANT IN THE WIND (1976) and
RUMOURS OF RAIN (1978) were both
shortlisted for the Booker Prize for Fiction.
André Brink has been made a Commander
of the Order of Arts and Letters and
awarded the Legion of Honour by the
French government. In 1992 he was
awarded the Monismanien Human Rights
Award from the University of Uppsala for
making known the injustice of apartheid to
the wider world. He remains a key figure in
the modernisation of the Afrikaans language
novel.
He is married, has four children and lives in
Cape Town.

up of narratives which sometimes are

The timing is during the Iran-Iraq war, and
there are two main plotlines that are attended to in detail: one is the story of a
troupe of Iraqi soldiers based on a strategic
hill called ‘Zero Hill’, fighting for dominance over a reservoir tank which is the
only source of water close by. The other is
about an Iraqi writer/journalist who is thinking of writing, or is writing, the aforementioned story. The Iraqi writer/journalist is
approached by an Iraqi military official who
asks him to write a fabricated report about
two of the Iranian war prisoners’ murdering
their own countryman and inmate. The
writer/reporter is trying to decline the official’s request.
MAHMUD DOULATA
DOULATABADI,
BADI born 1940 in
the Khurasan village of Dowlatabad, is the
most prominent Iranian novelist since the
1980s. Self-educated and forced to work
from childhood as farmer’s help, Doulatabadi went to Tehran later on to become an
actor.
He started writing in the 1960s and has
published numerous novels, novellas, plays
and essays. He is considered an important
representative of modern Persian prose and
has also written dozens of critical literary
and political essays.
Doulatabadi combines the poetic tradition
of his culture with the direct and unembellished everyday speech of the villages.

1933 classic collection of short stories,
KORNÉL ESTI, recently published in English, is the starting
point for Péter Esterházy’s new novel
entitled ESTI.
PÉTER
ESTERHÁZY,
born in 1950, is an internationally
recognized writer whose
works
have
been
translated into more
than twenty-five languages. Voted “Man of
the Year” (1999) and
recipient of the Kossuth Prize (1997), the
Peace Prize of the German Book Trade
(2004), and the Manes Sperber Literary
Prize (2009), among others, he is one of the
most popular writers in Europe today. A
novelist, essayist, and play-wright, he has
published thirty-four books and plays to
date.
Though ESTI is remarkable for its deceptive
lightness of touch and its fragmented structure that in the end hangs together so beautifully, it is perhaps even more remarkable
as a piece of self-revelation in which the
author reveals more of his thoughts, feelings
and his views on literature than in any other
of his works. What’s more, in doing so, he
resorts to a “trick” that is literature itself at
its most exciting: He takes Kornél Esti, the
hero of several stories by Dezsö Kosztolányi
(1885-1936) and endows him with new
content. By having Esti shift from being a
fictional character to being a fictional character with traces of the author’s own life, at
times living the author’s life, at times his
own, Esterházy has also done away with

CATALIN DORIAN FLORESCU was born in
1967 in Timisoara, Romania, where he spent
his
childhood
and
youth. In 1976 his
father took him on a
long journey to Italy
and the USA, but they
returned home after
eight months. Six years
later, he and his parents managed to escape
from Romania to Switzerland — Florescu is
now a Swiss citizen. He studied psychology
and worked for several years as psychotherapist in drug rehabilitation. Since 2001
he is a full-time writer.
His first novel TIME OF WONDERS received
great critical acclaim and several prizes,
including the Chamisso-Förderpreis and the
Hermann-Lenz Scholarship. For his first two
novels, Catalin Dorian Florescu was
awarded the Anna-Seghers-Preis 2003.

Dutch
Literature at Leiden University. After his studies
he worked as a literary
critic for two leading
daily papers and as a
radio producer.
He then took on in the
publishing world, starting his own imprint
in a large publishing house. In 1986 he
founded Balans Publishing House, based in
Amsterdam, publishing only non-fiction,
and sold the firm in 2002 to WPG Publishers.
He has published a volume of poetry and
three critically acclaimed novels which
have all been translated into English, German, and Italian and are published by distinguished houses such as Harvill, Maclehose Press, Suhrkamp, Le Serpent à Plumes,

PETER
STAMM
was born in 1963
in
Switzerland.
He
had
his
international

his debut novel
AGNES in 1998.
Since then his

Stamm writes in the tradition of Chekhov
and Camus as well as American storytellers
such as Raymond Carver, Richard Ford and
Ernest Hemingway. He is “a storyteller who
can achieve a great deal because he knows
how to omit, how to concentrate” (Hellmuth Karasek) and his “daunting project is
to entertain us with an ordinary emptiness”
(The New York Review of Books).
Stamm’s highly praised novel SEVEN YEARS,
his “greatest literary achievement” (TagesAnzeiger), has been sold into thirteen countries and has just been published by Granta in
the UK.
