Every time we participate in the liturgy, it strengthens our relationship with God…
As it ranks in natural life, so, too, friendship and love are also ranked most valuable in the spiritual life… Christ
Himself proclaims the commandment of God’s love as the most important and above all the other commandments:
“Therefore you shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, with all your mind, and with all
your strength.”
God, therefore, expects from us some type of a return to Him, much like the attitude a child has toward his
parent; one of looking up to them. As a matter of fact, Jesus Christ has presented to us God, as a Father. This
representation of God calls to mind all the obligations of a Father’s love for us and also the way our love for God,
our Father, should be. This means, that God loves us just as a father loves his children and therefore, we should
trust God and love Him just as children trust their parents.
“God is love” and He has created us in order to share in His love and friendship here on earth and through all
eternity. And, our Lord also wants to be loved. He tells us so by saying: “Here I stand, knocking at the door. If
anyone hears me calling and opens the door, I will enter his house and have supper with him, and he with me”.
Christ desires our love and looks for it, saying so in the Upper Room: “Live on in my love.”
A question comes to mind: “What should our love depend on, or consist of, for God?” St. John provides us with
an obvious answer to this question: “The love of God consists in this: that we keep His commandments” and
“Whoever keeps His word, truly has the love of God been made perfect in him.”
Now then, living our life according to the Ten Commandments and the precepts of the Gospel are the pillars of
what spiritual life is based upon. By being faithful to the commandments we grow spiritually in love with God and
we strengthen our relationship with Him…
February 2nd - Mother of God of the Blessed Thunder Candle - Candlemas - Purification of the B.V.M.
According to the liturgical calendar, February 2nd marks the day the Church celebrates the feast of the Purification of the Blessed Virgin Mary and the Presentation of the Lord in the temple. Due to the old tradition of candles
being blessed in the church on this day, Polish Catholics have come to refer to it as “Matki Boskiej Gromnicznej”,
quite literally Mother of God of the Blessed Thunder Candle, or better known as Candlemas Day.
In Poland, the candle blessed on Candlemas Day is called a “gromnica” (pronounced: grohm-neetza), which is a
consecrated wax candle. The Polish custom is to light the “gromnica” during natural disasters, such as rainstorms,
floods, and hurricanes, believing that it will spare them from these disasters and that they will see the light after
the storm. It is also the custom to light the “gromnica” for dying people and going so far as to place it in the hand
of a dying person. Again, it is believed that the flame of this candle will lead a dying person to heaven.
Some scientists explain the symbolic meaning of the light of the “gromnica” in the same way as St. John
explained the light in the Gospel: “Christ is the true light that enlightens every man coming to this world.”
During the blessing of the candles on this feast, the priest asks God to enlighten the mind of mankind with His
teaching and to aflame the heart with His love.
The theme of the Mother of God of the Blessed Thunder Candle is popular in the art, especially among
painters. The image captures a Polish legend and depicts snow-covered homes in dim light. The people
inside their homes are afraid of the hungry wolves on rampage outside the poor village. The legend
relates that Mary, the Mother of God of the Blessed Thunder Candle, watches over the people on cold
February nights. With her lit thunder candle (the “gromnica”) she wards off the ravenous pack and
protects the peasants from all harm.
Papal Altar Renovation Update
On Saturday, January 21, 2012 the members of our parish Pope John Paul II Centrum Committee, along with
myself, met with the respected engineer, Wladyslaw Rymsza, and architect, Beata Kociuba. At this meeting
Mr. Rymsza and Ms. Kociuba presented detailed plans of the renovation and preservation of the outdoor Papal
Altar, which were approved by all who attended the meeting.
After we receive the rough estimates regarding the upgrade of each of the Altar “elements”, we will ask the
Archdiocese for permission to proceed with the renovation of the existing outdoor Papal Altar.
Once we receive permission to proceed from the Archdiocese, we will be able to apply for all the necessary
permits from the city of Chicago.
In the meantime, I ask all Parishioners to pray for this ever important cause of our parish family. May Our Lady,
in whom Blessed John Paul II so totally trusted and believed in, aid us in completing this task, which we have
begun a few years ago in the honor of Her faithful Servant John Paul II.

Living Rosary Circle

Next Sunday the members of the Living Rosary Circle will exchange the mysteries of the Rosary. You may find
your assigned mystery of the Rosary for February on the sheets at the entrances to the church. We will pray the
Rosary in February for the following intentions as desired by our Holy Father:

1/. General Intention: That all peoples may have access to water and other resources needed for daily life.
2/. Missionary Intention: That the Lord may sustain the efforts of health workers assisting the sick and elderly in
the world’s poorest regions.

Pope John Paul II School Celebrates Catholic Schools Week: January 29-February 4, 2012
The theme for Catholic Schools Week 2012 focuses on three priorities that Catholic schools establish that
make them stand out from other educational institutions. Children are taught Faith – not just the basics of
Christianity, but how to have a relationship with God. Academics, which in Catholic schools are held to very high
standards, help each child reach his or her potential. Service, the giving of one’s time and effort to help others, is
taught both as an expression of faith and good citizenship.
To kick-off Catholic Schools Week, the parents and students of Pope John Paul II School will attend the
12:00 p.m. Mass TODAY at one of the supporting parishes and afterward will invite everyone for an Open
House from 1:30 p.m. - 3:00 p.m to learn more about Catholic education at PJP II School.
During the week, each day has been assigned a theme to recognize all the factors that make the school a
wonderful place. The themes include celebrating the community, faith, families, students, and faculty. As a
highlight of the week, Bishop Alberto Rojas will celebrate Mass on Tuesday, January 31 at 8:30 a.m. at
Five Holy Martyrs Church. Please join us!
Bringing the Sunday Gospels Home—Jan. 29th
In today’s Gospel Jesus speaks with authority to the
evil spirit; the evil spirit recognizes Jesus as “the Holy
One of God.” This made Jesus famous throughout the
region.
Jesus healed someone with an unclean spirit. What are
some situations that need healing in our world today?

mailed this week to those who requested them. Of
course, you may come to the Parish Office during business hours to request and pick up your copy as well.

Religious Ed Program News
Just a reminder to all Religious Education Program
familes that the remaining balance for registration,
tuition and book fees for the 2011-2012 Religious
Education Year are due no later than January 31,
2012. Thank you for your cooperation in this matter.
Thursday, February 2 is Candlemas Day. The Mass
at 8:00 a.m. will be celebrated in English and an
additional Mass will be celebrated at 6:00 p.m. in Polish.
Candles will be blessed at both Masses and will be
available for a donation of $2.
Candles blessed on this day are brought home to be
used throughout the year for religious celebrations, ie:
house blessing, sick visit with anointing, and as
sacramentals during time of hardship, danger of fire,
flood or war.
May the light of the blessed candle help us get through
the darkness of the world into the light of Jesus.

Groundhog Day—February 2nd
February 2 brings the most-watched
weather forecast of the year—and the
only one led by a rodent! (Sorry, Tom
Skilling) Legend has it that on this
morning, if a groundhog can see its shadow and retreats
back down into its hole, there will be six more weeks of
winter. If it cannot see its shadow, spring is on the way!
A certain weather-watching rodent’s predictions are
recorded in the Congressional Records of our National
Archives; its name is Punxsutawney Phil from
Pennsylvania. Punxsutawney Phil has made 121
predictions on record so far, and predicted an early
spring only 14 times (12%). But don’t worry—as to his
accuracy, according to the StormFax Weather Almanac
and records kept since 1887, Phil’s predictions have
been correct just 39% of the time. Might just be a good
day to rent the movie Groundhog Day anyway, which
was filmed in scenic Woodstock, Illinois.
Blessing of Throats
Throats will be blessed after the 8:00a.m.
Mass and 6:00p.m. Mass on Friday,
February 3, in honor of St. Blaise, with whom
the practice of blessing throats originated. As
legend has it, a mother came to St. Blaise because her
young son had a fish bone lodged in his throat. At
St. Blaise’s command, the child was able to cough up the
bone.
Let us pray that through the intercession of St. Blase,
God will deliver us from throat ailments and from every
other evil.
First Friday
This Friday is the First Friday of the month. Mass at
8:00 a.m. will be said in English and an additional
Mass at 6:00 p.m. will be said in Polish. Confessions
will be heard from 5:00-6:00 p.m. in both languages.

Pro-Life News
Our Parish Pro-Life Group will hold its monthly
meeting in the Rectory on Saturday,
February 4 , after the 8:00 a.m. Mass.
In other news, our Pro-Life Group sponsored an
essay and poster contest for the 7th and 8th grade
students at Pope John Paul II School. The students
were asked to answer how they can participate in the
Pro-Life movement. The activity was to bring awareness to the anniversary of the Roe v.Wade decision
that legalized abortion in our country (Jan. 22) and to
encourage a Pro-Life attitude in the students.
The winners were chosen by the members of the
FHM Pro-Life group and were presented with monetary
awards for 1st and 2nd place at the school Mass on
Thursday, January 19, 2012. The winners were:
1st Place, Gr.8—Pablo Esparza—$50
2nd Place, Gr.8—Victoria Wishecoby-Alvarado—$25
1st Place, Gr.7—Gisselle Mendoza—$50

Congratulations to all the winners! Below is an
excerpt from the 1st place essay as written by Pablo
Esparza:
Abortion is a subject that is talked a lot about. I
know that I myself cannot stop abortion, but I can
do everything in my power to make a difference.
In a story from Chicken Soup for the Soul the
author tells about a big storm in the sea. Where
the waves washed up a lot of the starfish on the
shore. A man was walking on the shore throwing
back as many starfish as he possibly could.
Another man who was also walking on the seashore saw the man and asked him, “what are you
doing?” The man replied, “I am throwing the
starfish back in or else they will die.” The other
man laughed there are thousands of starfish and
only one of you. You can’t possibly make a difference. The other man bends down picks up another
starfish throws it back in the water and says, “I
made a difference to that one.” With this story I
know I can make a difference. Every year there is
more than a million abortions. I know if I can help
stop two or three I can make a difference.

Spring 2012. Active Catholics, age 18 and older, who
have celebrated the sacraments of Baptism and

2012 Annual Catholic Appeal
„Be Imitators of Christ!”
Please spend some time this week reflecting on
the Annual Catholic Appeal brochure that you
received with your bulletin. While funding a number of
Archdiocesan ministries, the Appeal supports parish ministries
that provide religious education to children, youth and adults in
economically disadvantaged communities. It is also one of the
largest philanthropic sources of financial assitance for Catholic
schools in the Archdiocese.
Please remember that the Annual Catholic Appeal campaign
is much different than a one time special collection. It is a
pledge campaign where you can make a gift payable in
installments.
As you review the work enabled by your contribution to the
Annual Catholic Appeal, please reflect on God’s gifts to you. He
has given you all that you have. Your gifts to our parish, to the
Archdiocese and to the work of the Church throughout the world
are given in gratitude for the continuing gifts that God gives you.
Sometimes it is difficult to envision how one pledge can help
an organization the size of our Archdiocese, how it can make a
real difference. But each pledge does make a difference
because all parishes participate in the campaign and the gifts of
many enable our Archdiocese to deliver needed ministries and
services.
Our combined gifts not only signify our gratitude to God, they
fund a significant portion of the work of our Archdiocese. After
our parish goal of $11,946 is reached in cash, 100% of the
additional funds come back to our parish to help fund our
needs.
If you received your pledge form in the mail, please complete
it and mail it back or bring it to Mass next weekend. For those of
you that did not receive a mailing or have not had time to
respond to it, we will conduct our in-pew pledge process at all
Masses next weekend.

Z BIURKA PROBOSZCZA
Każde spotkanie liturgiczne umacnia naszą przyjaźń z Bogiem…
Jak w życiu naturalnym, przyjaźń i miłość stanowią najwyższą wartość, tak samo jest w życiu religijnym,
nadprzyrodzonym…
Chrystus ogłasza przykazanie miłości Boga, jako najważniejsze, największe i pierwsze. A brzmi ono: „Będziesz
miłował Boga twego z całego serca, z całej duszy, ze wszystkich myśli i ze wszystkich sił.” Bóg domaga się więc i
oczekuje od nas jakiegoś całkowitego zwrotu ku Niemu. Tak, jak to czyni dziecko, gdy zwraca się ku swoim
rodzicom.
Że tak jest, widzimy to z faktu, że Chrystus objawił nam Boga, jako Ojca. A z tego wypływają już wszystkie
wnioski o Ojcowskiej miłości Boga do nas, oraz wypływają wnioski również na temat, jak ma wyglądać nasza
miłość ku Niemu: a mianowicie, mamy zawierzyć Mu, jak dziecko zawierza rodzicom, oraz że mamy Go kochać, jak
dziecko kocha swych rodziców.
Jak bardzo Chrystus pragnie, aby był miłowany, wywnioskować możemy z Jego zapytania, z jakim zwrócił się do
pierwszego z Apostołów: „Szymonie, synu Jana, miłujesz Mnie więcej, aniżeli ci inni?” W tym bowiem pytaniu
słyszymy równocześnie i skargę, że przez „tych innych”, a więc również i przez nas, nie jest dość miłowany.
„Oto stoję u drzwi i kołaczę. Jeśli kto usłyszy głos mój i otworzy Mi drzwi, wnijdę do niego i będę z nim
wieczerzał, a on ze Mną”. Chrystus pragnie naszej miłości i oczekuje jej od nas, gdy mówi: „Trwajcie w miłości
Mojej”. Ale powstaje pytanie: na czym polegać ma nasza miłość ku Niemu?” Św. Jan daje na to pytanie jasną
odpowiedź: „Miłość do Boga polega na tym, abyśmy przykazania Jego zachowywali.” Oraz: „Kto zachowuje Jego
naukę, miłość Boża jest w nim doskonała”.
Tak więc zachowanie przykazań Bożych, czyli Dekalogu, oraz nakazów ewangelicznych jest filarem życia
religijnego. To przez wierność przykazaniom wzrastamy duchowo i przez wierność przykazaniom umacniamy naszą
przyjaźń z Panem Bogiem…
2 Lutego – Matki Boskiej Gromnicznej
Na dzień drugiego lutego przypada, według katolickiego kalendarza, tzw. Oczyszczenie Najświętszej Maryi Panny
i Ofiarowanie Jezusa w świątyni. Lud polski nazywa to święto: Matki Boskiej Gromnicznej, gdyż w tym dniu kapłan
poświęca świece-gromnice.
Skąd wzięła się ta gromnica? Jest to świeca z wosku, zwykle żółtawego koloru, którą lud
polski zapalał w czasie burzy, w przekonaniu, że ochroni ona dom i stodołę przed i
uderzeniem pioruna-gromu. Stąd nazwa gromnica. Kolberg tłumaczy, że znaczenie
symboliczne gromnicy, jak w ogóle światła w liturgii kościelnej, płynie ze słów Ewangelii wg
św. Jana, który mówi, że Chrystus jest „światłością prawdziwą, która oświeca każdego
człowieka na ten świat przychodzącego”.
W swoich modlitwach przy święceniu gromnic, kapłan prosi Boga, ażeby swoją nauką i
łaską umysł ludzki oświecał, a ich serca miłością zapalał.
Zwyczaj chrześcijański nakazuje, aby gromnice zachowywać w domu, podawać je
umierającym i zapalać podczas burz i grzmotów… W niektórych domach do dziś zachował się
zwyczaj zapalania gromnicy przed obrazem Matki Bożej podczas Jej świąt…
Temat świecy gromnicznej z liturgii przyjęła sztuka i literatura. Znane są ogólnie obrazy
Wierusza Kowalskiego, czy Stachiewicza, których tematem jest „Pani Lutowa”, czy też sama
Matka Boska, z gromnicą w ręku, pilnująca zaśnieżonych sadyb ludzkich przed wilkami…
Ołtarz Papieski i Jego Renowacja
W sobotę, 21 stycznia 2012 r. odbyło się spotkanie Centrum Papieskiego z panem inżynierem Rymszą i panią
architekt Kociubą. Na tym spotkaniu zostały przedstawione i zatwierdzone plany dotyczące szczegółowych zmian i
udoskonaleń istniejącego Ołtarza Papieskiego przy naszej parafii.
Po przedstawieniu nam ogólnego kosztorysu poszczególnych elementów Ołtarza, zwrócimy się do Diecezji o
pozwolenie na dokonanie zmian i ulepszeń w istniejącym Ołtarzu Papieskim.
Po otrzymaniu pozytywnej odpowiedzi z Kurii, będziemy mogli prosić urzędy miejskie o pozwolenia potrzebne do
poszczególnych prac nad Ołtarzem.
Polecam modlitwom wszystkich Parafian tę, tak ważną, dla naszej wspólnoty parafialnej, sprawę. Oby Pani,
której całkowicie zawierzył Bł. Papież Jan Paweł II, wspierała to dzieło czynione na cześć Jej wiernego Sługi.

W następną, pierwszą miesiąca lutego, będzie zmiana tajemnic różańcowych. Nowy wykaz tajemnic dla każdego
Członka Różańca Świętego będzie ogłoszone na tablicach przy wejściach do Kościoła, jak też i intencje Ojca
Świętego na luty:
1/. Intencja Generalna: Aby wszyscy ludzie mieli dostęp do wody i innych zasobów koniecznych do życie
codziennego.
2/. Intencja Misijna: Aby Pan podtrzymywał wysiłki pracowników służby zdrowia pomagającym chorym i starszym

Tydzień Katolickich Szkół w Szkole im. Papieża Jana Pawła II: 29 Stycznia—4 Lutego
Podczas nadchodzącego tygodnia, łączymy się z wszystkimi szkołami katolickim w całym kraju, celebrując z
nimi ważność katolickiego wykształcenia i wychowania. Studenci szkoły im. Papieża Jana Pawła II i rodzice będą
obecni na Mszy św. o godzinie 12 p.m. DZISIAJ, 29 stycznia, i podzielą się z nami wiadomościami o szkole;
zasegurują nam co my możemy uczynić, aby jak najwięcej dzieci mogło otrzymać doskonałe katolickie
wykształcenie; i zaproszą wszystkich do zwiedzenia Szkoły, tzw.”Open House,” w godz. od 1:30p.m. do
3:00p.m.
Każdy dzień tygodnia w naszej szkole ma swój temat, który odzwierciedla przyczyny, dla których nasza szkoła
jest tak wspaniałym miejscem. Wśród tych dziennych tematów są: sławienie naszej społeczności, wiary, rodzin,
uczniów, nauczycieli i komitetu rodzicielskiego. Momentem szczytowym tego tygodnia jest obecność wśród nas
Biskupa Alberto Rojas, który będzie celebrować Mszę św. we wtorek, 31 stycznia o godzinie 8:30a.m. w
naszym kościele. Wszyscy parafianie są zaproszeni do uczestniczenia w tej Mszy św.

Przypominamy wszystkim rodzicom że balans opłaty
za rok nauczania katechetycznego 2011-12 należy się
zapłacić do dnia 31 stycznia, 2012 r. Dziękujemy!
Uroczyste poświęcenie świec odbywać się będzie w
naszym kościele w czwartek, 2 lutego, podczas Mszy
św. o godz. 8:00 a.m. (w języku angielskim) i o godz.
6:00 p.m. (w języku polskim). Świece można
będzie nabyć w kościele za ofiarę $2 a następnie
zabrać do domu, aby zapalać podczas religijnych
uroczystości, odwiedzin kapłana oraz jako
sakramentalia w czasie trudnym, podczas zagrożenia
pożarem, powodzia czy wojna, Światło świecy ma
pomagać nam przedzierać się przez ciemności świata i
za wstawiennictwem Matki Najświętszej zdażać do
największego Światła jakim jest Chrystus.

Dzień Świstaka—2go lutego
Drugi luty skupia największą w roku oglądalność
pogody—prowadzoną przez niezwykłego gryzonia.
Legenda głosi, jeżeli w ten dzień świstak zobaczy swój
cień, zima przedłuży się o sześć tygodni. Świstak o
imieniu „Phil” jest z Pennsylwanii i widział swój cień
88% w ciągu swojego długiego życia. Można tego
„aktora” obejrzeć w filmie pt. Groundhog Day (Dzień
Świstaka), który był nagrany w Woodstock, Illinois!
Błogosławieństwo gardeł - Św. Błażeja
W piątek, 3 lutego, przypada święto Błażeja,
biskupa i męczennika, patrona od wszelkich
dolegliwości i chorób gardła. Zgodnie z
tradycją, w dniu tym, po Mszy św. o godz.
8:00 a.m. będzie błogosławienie gardeł. Podejdźmy do
tego błogosławieństwa z wiarą w moc Bożą ukazaną za
wstawiennictwem św. Błażeja.

„Bądźcie naśladowcami Chrystusa”
Prosimy by obecnym tygodniu zastanowić się
przez chwilę nad informacją otrzymaną wraz z
dzisiejszym biuletynem parafialnym na temat Dorocznej Kwesty
Katolickiej. Doroczna Kwesta Katolicka wspiera wiele
parafialnych inicjatyw i projektów duszpasterskich, które oferują
edukację religijną dla dzieci, młodzieży oraz dorosłych w
uboższych wspólnotach naszej archidiecezji. To również
największe źródło finansowego wsparcia dla wszystkich szkół
katolickich w naszej Archidiecezji.
Prosimy pamiętać, że Doroczna Kwesta Katolicka jest czymś
więcej niż jednorazową akcją. Kwesta jest tak skonstruowana,
że zadeklarowaną kwotę można wpłacać ratalnie.
Obserwując efekty pracy, które dokonały się dzięki
darowiznom na Doroczną Kwestę Katolicką, warto zastanowić
się nad głębszym rozumieniem daru. Ponieważ każdy dar
otrzymujemy od samego Boga, powinniśmy część z tych darów
oddać na potrzeby swojej parafii, archidiecezji – szerzej myśląc
- na rzecz Kościoła na całym świecie jako wyraz wdzięczności
za wszystko co do tej pory otrzymaliśmy i nadal otrzymujemy od
Boga.
Zapewne niekiedy trudno wyobrazić sobie w jaki sposób nasz
dar może pomóc tak wielkiej instytucji jak archidiecezja. W jaki
sposób nasza ofiara może mieć realny wpływ na działalność tak
wielu organizacji. Pamiętajmy, że każdy dar, każda ofiara
stanowi realną pomoc dla potrzebujących, ponieważ stanowi
część akcji, w której uczestniczą wszystkie parafie, i w ten
sposób zebrane darowizny wielu osób umożliwiają naszej
archidiecezji pełnienie koniecznej posługi duszpasterskiej.
Wszystkie nasze datki, będące wyrazem wdzięczności wobec
Boga, stanowią jednocześnie finansowe wsparcie dla wielu
zadań prowadzonych przez Kościół chicagowski. Po osiągnięciu
kwoty docelowej dla naszej parafii $11,946 w gotówce, 100%
dodatkowo zebranych funduszy zostanie zwrócone do parafii na
jej własne potrzeby.
Jeśli otrzymałeś już drogą pocztową formularz darowizny,
prosimy o jego wypełnienie i odesłanie pocztą, lub przyniesienie
na Mszę św. w następny weekend. Ci, z Was, którzy nie
otrzymali jeszcze listu lub nie mieli okazji do wypełnienia
formularza, będą mieli możliwość złożenia swojej darowizny w
następny weekend podczas wszystkich Mszy św.
Sakrament Bierzmowania Dla Dorosłych
Podczas Wiosny 2012 Roku
Biskupi poszczególnych dekanatów diecezji Chicago
ustalili daty wiosennego bierzmowania udzielanego
dorosłym katolikom. Aktywni katolicy, którzy są
ochrzczeni i przystępują do Komunii św. są zaproszeni
do uczestniczenia w tym przygotowaniu do przyjęcia
Sakramentu Bierzmowania tego roku, na wiosnę.
