Do You Know………………….….The Corporal Works of Mercy
“For I was hungry you gave me food, I was thirsty and you gave me drink… ”
(Matthew 26: 35)
Mother Teresa dedicated her life to picking up the poor and the suffering from the streets of Calcutta and other major
cities in India and providing for them the most basic necessities: food, shelter, a blanket, and a bit of human warmth
and kindness. Many were desperately sick with incurable illnesses, but it made no difference to Mother Teresa and
her Sisters of Charity. They were committed to loving the poor as "Jesus in disguise," so to speak. The sisters saw
the Lord as truly present in all who suffer. The Catholic Church has traditionally encouraged her children to understand the practice of merciful love by dividing the works of mercy into two kinds: corporal (that is, bodily) and spiritual. What we see in the life of Mother Teresa is a shining example of a life dedicated especially to practicing the
corporal works of mercy.
The spiritual and corporal works of mercy seek to help alleviate human misery–material deprivation, unjust oppression, physical and psychological illness and death. Such misery is an obvious sign of our inherited human frailty and
need for salvation as a consequence of original sin. Everyone is obliged to perform the works of mercy, according to
his own ability and the need of his neighbor. It is important to remember that ordinary deeds done every day to
relieve the corporal or spiritual needs of others are true works of mercy, if done in the name of Christ. Taking care
of children, teaching children and adults about the faith, caring for elderly parents, a sick child, spouse or being a
caregiver are some examples.
Corporal Works of Mercy
To feed the hungry
Everyone needs food for their body. It is an act of love to help others to obtain their bodily nourishment, especially
those in greatest need. [Examples: Bringing food to the poor or food pantry, donating money to buy food for the poor
or food pantry, sharing your food or candy, helping to shop for groceries, helping with the cooking, doing dishes,
waiting on company.]
To give drink to the thirsty
What is said of food also applies to drink. [Examples: Giving someone a drink on a hot day, giving the baby its bottle, pouring drinks at the table, lifting up a young child to get a drink at a water fountain.]
To clothe the naked
Everyone needs clothing for warmth, protection, modesty and dignity. It is an act of love to help others obtain clothing, especially those who need help. [Examples: Bringing clothes to a needy family, sharing outgrown clothes with
another family, bringing clothes to a clothing drive, helping a young child get dressed, helping with laundry at
home.]
To visit the imprisoned
Those in prison and many other persons and their families suffer hindrances or dangers to freedom. Helping them,
visiting them or protecting them is an act of love. [Examples: Visiting prisoners, fighting for humane treatment for
the imprisoned, helping to care for the families of the imprisoned, protecting a little child from a bigger child, taking
care of and protecting the baby, fighting for one’s country.]
To shelter the homeless
Everyone needs shelter. Some people live in cardboard homes; some people live in homes made of discarded materials; many people are homeless. To help the homeless obtain shelter or to preserve it is an act of love. [Examples:
Bringing others to your home in times of fire, floods, or other disaster. Working at or supporting a homeless shelter.
Helping to take care of the house, dusting the furniture, making the beds, cleaning the floor, and cutting the grass.]
To visit the sick
Helping sick people in any way is an act of love. [Examples: Visiting someone in the hospital or nursing home. Visiting someone who is sick at home or the elderly who are shut-ins. Running an errand for an elderly or sick person.
Reading to the sick or elderly.]
To bury the dead
It is an act of love to show respect for the bodies of the dead, since during life, they were temples of the Holy Spirit
and received the Body and Blood of Christ in Holy Communion. [Examples: Going to funerals and wakes. Treating
cemeteries with respect. Cutting the grass on a grave. Putting flowers on it.]
We wtorek, 18 sierpnia pożegnaliśmy naszą zasłużoną parafiankę,
ś.p. Feliksę Sawicką.
Współzałożycielkę Polskiej Szkoły im. św. Maksymiliana Kolbego w Riverhead, której dyrektorką była przez 38 lat.
Pani Fela, bo tak ją wszyscy nazywaliśmy, przyjechała do USA w 1960 roku i bardzo szybko zaangażowała się w działalność na rzecz miejscowej Polonii. Wspierała przybywających imigrantów pomagając im zdobyć mieszkanie i pracę.
Z wielką pasją angażowała się w wychowanie młodego pokolenia Polaków, troszcząc się w zachowywanie polskiego
języka, historii polski i polskich tradycji. Za swoje zasługi na polu edukacji Polonii na Long Island otrzymała wiele
nagród. Odznaczona Krzyżem Zasługi, Medalem Komisji Edukacji Narodowej i Orderem św. Agnieszki, przyznanym
jej w zeszłym roku przez bp. Wiliama Murphy'ego. Jej wkład w życie polskiej społeczności we wschodniej części
Long Island i w życie parafii św. Izydora w Riverhead pozostanie dla nas świadectwem wiary i patriotyzmu.
Niech Pan Bóg przyjmie ją do swojej chwały!
Miłosierne uczynki wobec ciała.
Głodnych nakarmić.
Każdy potrzebuje jedzenia, aby żyć, dlatego też aktem miłości jest troska o to, by inni mieli pożywienie. [Przykład: W
naszej parafii dwa razy w tygodniu wydajemy jedzenie dla najbardziej potrzebujących. Możemy wesprzeć to dzieło
przynosząc trwałe produkty żywnościowe lub ofiarując pieniądze właśnie na ten cel. Wiele osób starszych (w naszych rodzinach czy w naszym sąsiedztwie) potrzebuje pomocy w przygotowaniu posiłków. Czasami Możemy chociażby podzielić się z kimś potrzebującym jedzeniem. Ale także w naszym domu, troszcząc się o godne podanie
posiłku, spożywanego wspólnie przy stole rodzinnym.
Spragnionych napoić.
To, co powiedzieliśmy o jedzeniu, dotyczy także picia. Szczególnie latem, gdy podczas upałów narażeni jesteśmy na
odwodnienie. [Przykład: podać komuś szklankę wody w gorący dzień, zatroszczyć się o swoich pracowników, zapewniając im napoje. Etc]
Nagich przyodziać
Każdy potrzebuje ubrania: ze względu na zimno, ochronę, skromność czy po prostu godność osoby. Dlatego też troska
o ubranie, szczególnie wobec potrzebujących jest też aktem miłości. [Przykład: przynieśc ubrania potrzebujacej
rodzinie, podzielić się ubraniami, z których się już wyrosło czy choćby pomóc dzieciom lub osobie chorej i niedołężnej w ubieraniu się]
Podróżnych w dom przyjąć
Każdy potrzebuje schronienia. Nie tylko ci, którzy są podróżnymi w dosłownym tego słowa zanczeniu. W pewnym
sensie bowiem wszyscy jesteśmy podróżnymi. Niektórzy ludzie nie mają domu nie dlatego, że chwilowo są w podróży, ale dlatego, że z różnych powodów stali się bezdomnymi. Troska o schronienie dla nich także jest aktem
miłości. [Przykład: Pomoc tym, którzy z powodów klęsk żywiołowych stracili swoje domy, pomoc bądź praca na
rzecz schroniska dla bezdomnych. Ale również: pomoc osobom starszym w utrzymaniu domu w czystości, aby móc
w nim godnie żyć. Etc]
Więźniów pocieszać
Ci, którzy znajdują się w więzieniu i ich rodziny cierpią z powodu ograniczenia wolności. Bez względu na to, czy kara,
którą odbywaja, jest słuszna czy nie, powinniśmy im okazać miłość, by w ten sposób pomóc im w powrocie do normalnego życia w społeczeństwie.[Przykład: odwiedzanie więźniów, troska o właściwe i godne traktowanie uwięzionych, pomoc rodzinom osadzonych etc]
Chorych nawiedzać.
Pomoc chorym w każdy sposób jest aktem miłości. [Przykład: odwiedzanie kogoś, kto jest w szpitalu lub domu opieki
(nursing home). Odwiedzanie chorych lub starszych w ich domach I pomoc im w codziennych czynnościach, jak
sprzątanie, gotowanie czy choćby czytanie]
Umarłych grzebać
Troska o godny pochówek zmarłego, którego ciało było świątynia Ducha Świętego i które przyjmowało Ciało i Krew
Chrystusa jest także aktem miłości [Przykład: Uczestniczenie w pogrzebach i modlitwie w Domu Pogrzebowym,
Troska o groby zmarłych, modlitwa za nich i ofiarowanie w ich intencji Mszy św.]
