Retrospective celebrating 35 years of the Polish Art Foundation 22 August 2014 - 31 August 2014 Steps Gallery 62 Lygon Street, Carlton VIC Donated by Joseph Brown Siberians 1917 The Polish Art Foundation was established in 1977, in Melbourne, Australia. Its spiritual founder is artist Wladyslaw Dutkiewicz. During his illness a group of close friends decided to organise a show of his works , this in fact instigated the foundation’s birth. The aim of the new foundation would be simple: to promote Polish artists among the Australian community and vice versa, to promote Australian artists to the migrant community living in Australia. The group also wanted to obtain a body of works which would become a permanent collection for the foundation and could be enjoyed for generations to come. This is the first major exhibition devoted to the new scope of our collection. The ‘Retrospective’ exhibition presents an unparalleled opportunity to showcase works painstakingly collected for almost four decades. Bringing together nearly 40 artworks, the exhibition features painting, print collages and drawings made in a variety of techniques, showcasing an array of subject matter. The ‘Retrospective’ profiles pieces from emerging young artists as well as established and internationally celebrated artists. It features works from private donations and acquisitions as well as our most known and -best-loved works- the past winners of our acclaimed International Drawing Bienniale. This retrospective exhibition also highlights the Polish Art Foundation’s commitment to the local and international arts sector. In building and showing our collection we hope to fulfill our original ethos of promoting Polish and Australian artists and elevating our them onto the international stage. We hope you enjoy this unique exhibition.
