PAYING A DEBT
OF JUSTICE
I
How happy are the poor in spirit;
theirs is the kingdom of heaven
n Chapter 12 of Luke’s
Gospel, Jesus instructs
his disciples and the
crowd on how to be ready
for the coming judgment.
A crowd of many thousands has gathered to hear
Jesus. At first he speaks
only to the disciples, reminding them that it is not
persecution they should
fear but the judgment that
is coming for all who do
not acknowledge the Son
of Man. Suddenly a man
in the crowd shouts out
to Jesus, “Teacher, tell
my brother to divide the
inheritance with me.” He
seems to have grown tired
of Jesus speaking only to
the disciples. Jesus offers
the man no help. Instead
he uses the question to
teach what, in light of the
coming judgment, life really consist of.
Jesus tells the crowd
a parable. A rich man’s
lands have yielded more
crops than expected. His
response is not to consider how he might share
all the extra food with
others but to wonder how
he can possibly store it
all. He has what he thinks
is a brilliant idea: to tear
down his present barns
and build larger ones.
Then he will have many
things stored up for years
of eating, drinking, and
making merry.
“You fool” is God’s
response to this man be-
cause that very night his
life will be taken away.
To whom will everything
belong then, God asks.
The rich man’s world is
small, just him and his
possessions, and now he
learns that he is to lose
his life. What good are
his possessions now?
Jesus states the moral of
the story. This is how it
will be for everyone who
stores up treasure for
himself or herself but is
not rich in what matters
to God.
Centuries later St.
Gregory the Great taught
that when we care for
the needs of the poor, we

Czas urlopów
i wakacje
Nienasycona
chęć posiadania
Jezus w dzisiejszej
Ewangelii zwraca uwagę
na
istotę
chciwości,
którą stanowi lęk o siebie. Chciwość, która jest
oznaką braku zaufania do
Boga, jakimś rodzajem
bałwochwalstwa, zajmuje
drugą pozycję w katalogu grzechów głównych.
Sprzeciwia się miłości,
która uczy, by móc się
dzielić, dawać i ubogacać
innych. Chciwy człowiek
chce tylko brać, zagarniać
i odbierać. „Uważajcie
i strzeżcie się wszelkiej
chciwości, bo nawet gdy
ktoś opływa we wszystko, życie jego nie jest
zależne od jego mienia”.
Następnie Jezus opowiada przypowieść o bogaczu, który woli budować
spichlerze niż zatroszczyć
się o swe zbawienie. Jest
to przypowieść o nienasyceniu. Gdy masz
trochę, chcesz więcej!
Gdy masz więcej, brakuje
ci jeszcze trochę! I tak
w koło! Zdumiewający
jest egoizm tego chciwca. Cały swój dorobek i
urodzaj wykorzystał tylko
dla siebie, dla poprawienia swego losu. W jakich
sytuacjach mamy dziś do
czynienia z chciwością?
Spójrzmy choćby na
łapówki, które się biorą z
chciwości i prowadzą do
korupcji. Często gorszymy się, że inni je dają i
przyjmują, a jak jest z
nami? Czy nie chcemy
wpłynąć przez nie na
jakość załatwianych przez
nas spraw? Inny przejaw
chciwości to skąpstwo,
czego dowodem są choćby
katastrofy
budowlane.
Ktoś chce zaoszczędzić,
jak ów pracownik, który
miał wybudować piękny
dom. Nie wiedział, że jest
to podziękowanie od szefa
firmy za jego dobrą pracę.
Gdy skończył, a budował
nadmiernie oszczędzając
– dowiedział się, że to dla
niego. Owocem chciwości
są kradzieże. Cóż to takiego zagarnąć coś, co się
nam przyda lub mogłoby
się przydać. A przecież
to czyjaś własność i w
ten sposób pozbawiamy
kogoś jego prawa do
posiadania. Inna forma
chciwości prowadzi do
bezrobocia. Bo oto chciwi
szefowie firm, korporacji i prywatnych fortun
windują swoje uposażenia
kosztem
pracowników
oraz rozpadu firmy. A za
bezrobociem często idzie
rozbicie rodzin, bo ktoś
pracuje daleko lub na emigracji i nie ma go całymi
miesiącami w sercu
rodziny. Widzimy więc,
że jeżeli człowiek pozwoli się opanować chęci
posiadania za wszelką
cenę, to chciwość staje
się bogiem, a człowiek
jej sługą, niewolnikiem.
I jako niewolnik musi
robić wszystko, byle tylko służyć wiernie swojemu bożkowi. Widzimy
również dziś, że wielu
„wydaje się nieustannie uganiać za takim
zajęciem, które pomoże
mu pomnożyć posiadany majątek. Niekiedy
osiągnięcie owego celu
doprowadza do tego,
że jest przemęczony
i
rozdrażniony,
budując
wokół
siebie niezauważalny mur
wrogości i niedostępności.
Chciwość więc niejedno
ma imię. Nie zawsze
materialne. Wielu ludzi
pożąda doznań duchowych. Każdy chce czuć
się szczęśliwie i bezpiecznie, nie mieć żadnych
zmartwień. Dlatego coraz
więcej ludzi wędruje do
psychoterapeutów, bierze
różne lekarstwa, aby móc

chcielibyśmy już dzisiaj
wspomnieć
to
świętowanie Polskiej Wigilii Bożego Narodzenia.
Będzie to dla nas nowe
wyzwanie w tym roku i
mamy nadzieję, że uda
nam się zaprosić wielu
polskich rodaków i ich
rodziny do świętowania
tej jakże pięknej tradycji
przy Wigilijnym stole.
