Szanowni Państwo - Napoli Città della Letteratura
Creative Cities and Regions.
Challenges for a Cooperation among the Cities of Literature
Kraków, 26-27 October 2012
The conference of the Cities of Literature in Krakow is part of the Reading Malopolska programme cofinanced by the European Union under the Malopolska Regional Development Fund for the years 20072013. The Malopolska Region and its capital, Krakow, wish to communicate their literary heritage and to
participate actively in the network of Creative Cities in the field of literature. The conference will be held in
Krakow, the capital of the Malopolska Region, the European Capital of Culture in 2000, one of the oldest
academic centres in Europe, the capital of Polish literature and language, but also an important hub of
European and world literature. A unique architectural complex, the historic Old Town of Krakow was
inscribed to the so-called "first" UNESCO World Heritage List in 1978. Since 2010, Krakow has also been
making attempts to obtain the title of a UNESCO City of Literature.
The time of the conference was not chosen at random. It is scheduled to take place at the height of the 4th
Conrad Festival, organised between the 22nd and the 28th of October under the motto of "Think:
Literature", and in parallel with the greatest industry feast of literature in Poland: the 16th Book Fair in
Krakow.
The conference is supposed to be an exchange forum and an opportunity to present cities of literature and
the best solutions in the management of literary capital, a place for meetings of experts, practitioners,
members of self-government bodies, directors of libraries and festivals of literature, promoters, organisers
and representatives of international literary institutions. The conference being held in the city which is
regarded as the literary pride of Poland emphasises the importance of the literary region of Malopolska in
the international debate on the shape of literary programmes and strategies as well as related challenges
and risks in the context of the ongoing globalisation process. In this context, discussions will be
supplemented by the following topics: commoditisation of culture, challenge for the literature of small
languages, digital books, translation of literature, decrease of the readership level as a rising global
problem of many countries.
Panelists
The conference will be attended by representatives of UNESCO Cities of Literature and cities aspiring for
the title, the directors of the largest literary festivals in the world, including members of the WORD
Alliance, representatives of the most dynamic institutions promoting literature, as well as representatives
of the literary life in Małopolska.
