Weekday services will be held each morning after the 8:00 AM Mass and on Sunday, July 24th after the 8:30 Mass. Novena petitions, as usual, should be placed in the basket on the altar. Envelopes will be distributed on Monday, July 25. Donations will be picked up at the closing of the Novena on Tuesday, July 26. Our Financial Support of St. Ferdinand Parish 13th Sunday in Ordinary Time, June 25-26, 2005: Weekly Offertory Goal: $13,500 Envelopes: $ 6,697.00 Loose Cash: $ 3,030.00 TOTAL DONATIONS: $ 9,727.00 Sunday & Holy Day Offertory Deficit for past yr.: $50,621.72 PETER’S PENCE COLLECTION: Last Sunday: $3,362.79 Total Collected to Date: $3,666.79 Thank you for your support of the missionary and humanitarian activities of our Holy Father, Pope Benedict XVI. Your generosity, joined with that of all Roman Catholics, will help our Pontiff to spread the Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ to all the nations of the world, especially those most impoverished. May God bless you for all that you do for the Universal Church as well as here at St. Ferdinand Parish. New Church Air Conditioning Project We appreciate everyone’s patience during our recent heat wave as we are awaiting delivery of our new Church Air Conditioning units. Installation will occur as soon as possible in the coming weeks. Some weekend Masses may be moved to the Chapel depending on the weather until the new Air Conditioning is installed. If the location of your Mass changes, notices will be posted on the Church doors in English and Polish languages. We are so grateful to all of our parishioners who contributed to our capital campaign for the past two and half years, Sharing Christ’s Gifts. If it were not for you, we would be suffering through the heat all this summer. As it is now, even with delays from the manufacturer, our relief should be just a couple of more weeks away. Several parishioners have suggested to me to mention that our Gas and Electric bills for our parish complex are over $10,000 a month. As you can see from last Sunday’s collection, its not just a matter of the many good parishioners who are providing our new Church Air Conditioning units and heating coils, but it will take all of us to do our share financially to maintain and run the units for years to come. Have a safe and restful 4th of July weekend! Daniel P. Costigan, Business Manager Page Three As members of the parish faith in community, it is our responsibility to remember both in concrete and spiritual Prayer ways those who cannot celebrate with us each week because they are ill. Those who are sick in turn, remember all of us daily in their prayers and in their sufferings. We experience many blessings because of their remembering us. By Stephanie Blozy, WeatherBug Chief Chirp The July 4th Weekend Holiday marks the midpoint of the summer vacation season. Driving to the beach, lake, mountains, Grandma’s or favorite amusement park is an American tradition. So is hearing the words, “Are we there yet”, coming from the backseat. Long before the invention of DVD players in cars, my family and I would play car games for nearly 18 hours as we drove from Cincinnati to my grandparent’s house in West Palm Beach. The incentive to play? Prizes! My Mom kept a secret stash of prizes like Matchbox cars, Star Wars action figures, audio tapes, snacks and puzzle books, under her seat for the winners. I think I looked forward to the drive more than the destination! Here are some of the games that we played: Name That Tune – One person would chose a song and begin to hum the tune. The first person to correctly name the song got to hum next. Children of the 80’s may enjoy limiting the tunes to TV theme songs and reminiscing about the show! ABC’s – Using billboards, license plates, and other signage, players try to complete the alphabet first. Only one person can use a letter so they must shout and point the letter out to claim it. First one to “Z” wins. Last Letter First – Choose a category like songs, TV shows, animals, or cities and select an order of players. The first player names something in the category (i.e. a song title). The next person would have to name a song title that begins with the last letter of the previous song. Players drop out if they can’t think of anything. Last one left is the winner! 50 States – Can be played as a team or individually. Write down all 50 states (challenge your kids to tell you what the capitols are too). Find as many different states on the license plates of other cars/trucks as you can. Give extra points to anyone who spots Alaska or Hawaii! Say What? – Players take turns choosing 5 random letters (e.g. C, P, S, W, L). Give everyone a few minutes to make up a silly sentence like “Chirp plays soccer without looking” and take turns sharing your sentence. BINGO! – We had actual “travel BINGO” cards, but you can easily make your own by drawing a grid with 25 boxes. Put a “Free Space” in the middle and then write in the names of objects you will encounter on your journey (stop signs, horses, farmer, McDonald’s, etc) in the remaining 24 boxes. First one with 5 inter-connected boxes checked-off wins. Chief Meteorologist, Mark Hoekzema created a special version of this game called “Road Kill Bingo” for the Storm Chase. Silence is Golden – Once I got older, I understood why this was Mom and Dad’s favorite game! Whoever stays quiet the longest, wins. Happy Travels! Courtesy of WeatherBug. Used with permission. July 3, 2005 Fourteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time Page Nine ON THE BODY, THE SPIRIT, AND THE FOURTH OF JULY Copyright 2005 by John B. Reynolds ([email protected]) Years ago, Jeff Bridges and Karen Allen got together in the film Star Man, a touching alien-come-to-earth affair. Bridges is the alien. Actually, Bridges, first, is Allen’s deceased husband, but the alien assumes the husband’s body to better deal with his new surroundings. It’s fun watching Bridges (the alien) adjust to his new human experiences, but the scene I remember most is when the starcrossed couple pulls into a truck stop and Bridges experiences his first slice of home-made pie. Apple, as I recall. The expression on his face belies the pleasure of it all, prompting Allen to conclude, essentially, that even though our human bodies are primitive, we have our moments. I am reminded of this scene as I consider today’s second reading. “You are not in the flesh,” Paul tells us. “On the contrary, you are in the spirit, if only the Spirit of God dwells in you….” OK. I think I get what he’s getting at, especially when I recall what some guy on Channel 11 said years ago. He said that we aren’t human beings but spiritual beings in human form. OK a second time. But we also believe that our bodies will rise again, returning us to our humanness, but glorified in body and soul. It’s in the Nicene Creed, roughly: “We look for the resurrection of the dead, and the life of the world to come,” with details in The Catechism of the Catholic Church (1059, 1060). Which brings me back to that apple pie. Or that ice-cold beer or that ’72 Duster of mine or that beautiful sunset or that delicious kiss or any of the life experiences that bring us pleasure. Or even the ones that bring us anguish, sorrow, and pain. Jesus knows what it’s like to hang out at a wedding feast or go fishing with his buddies. He also knows of the brokenness which can be the human experience for all of us. “Come to me, all you who labor and are burdened, and I will give you rest…” he says in today’s Gospel passage. Depending on the day, I can almost hear him speaking the words directly to me. Depending on the day, can’t you almost hear him speaking them directly to you? “You are not in the flesh; on the contrary, you are in the spirit…” Like I said, I think I get what Paul’s getting at. Not to mention the guy on Channel 11. But we are human beings. Eternal ones, in fact. Not this go around. But that’s what’s coming. Jesus embraced his humanness for all of us to emulate. He enjoyed a good meal. He celebrated with his friends. He mourned with them, too. And in the end, he took the nails for us when, even by his own admission, he didn’t want to. I don’t know if our Lord is into Fourth of July fireworks, but I like to think that he is. Because like a slice of home-made apple pie savored for the very first time, the lights in the sky we see this holiday weekend are just another celebration of this life we live. We may be primitive, we humans, but we have our moments. And someday, by God, we’ll have our glorified eternity.
