Application notes Ascon Spa
Application notes Ascon Spa Plastic industry (disposable kitchenware). Raw material extruders and rollers. The extruder analyzed in this application provides the raw material for the half of the customer’s production and is controlled by Deltadue and GammaDue products from Ascon. An accurate control during this phase contributes to meet the high-precision PP/PET sheet demand. The sheet line has been developed in house by the customer for the manufacture of thin monolayer film necessary to supply the factory with the raw material to be formed into cups, containers, bowls, plates and trays. Two main sections form the extruder: the extrusion part and the rollers. Deltadue and GammaDue Ascon controllers control both parts while a Modicon PLC manages the complete machine automation thru Modbus communications. A Touch screen panel that accesses to all the machine parameters provides the interface to the operator. They receive the working parameters and the set points from the Modicon PLC through the embedded RS485 Modbus interface. A dedicated GammaDue PID controller, model M4, controls the water temperature in each roller cylinder. 1 This configuration allows the PLC to execute only logical and automation operations while the PID loop control is done by dedicated and more effective devices as the D1 and M4 controllers saving a lot of complex programs and execution time in the main CPU. The D1 controllers include a unique common bus for RS 485 Modbus communications and 24DC power supply, up to 3 relay outputs, a universal input signal for temperature input, an auxiliary current transformer to manage power controllers and digital inputs to directly execute internal functions. Customer was particularly satisfied by the behavior of the units in case of fault, as a matter of fact the electronic part may be easily withdrawn and replaced and all the terminal blocks are removable and polarized in order to avoid any wrong rewiring. These characteristics made the replacement time very short thus decreasing the production shutdowns. Future lines will consider the use of the Ascon’s SigmaPAC series of Programmable Automation Controllers (PACs) and I/Os to replace the PLC.
