IVth International SPIE Students’ Chapters Meeting in Torun
All members of Nicolaus Copernicus University SPIE chapter participated in IVth International SPIE
Students’ Chapters Meeting in Torun. We were a organizing committee and few of us gave a talk
during the meeting.
We cultivate the tradition which started in Wroclaw University of Technology (Poland) four years
ago. This time the venue has been changed to Torun, the goal of the Meeting has always been –
to exchange scientific experience by young researchers and to help students to make their first
steps towards their future careers. The Meeting was focused on the field of optics and photonics.
Our scientific forum, supported by the respectable invited experts, was a fertile soil for new ideas
and solutions to grow.
During the conference 7 professional scientists Chantal Andraud (SPIE invited lecturer), Maria L.
Calvo (SPIE invited lecturer), Robert Huber, Henryk Kasprzak, Wieslaw Nowak, Maciej Wojtkowski,
Artur Podhorodecki, and 29 students presented their lectures. Besides eight technical sessions,
another one was focused on SPIE Chapters’ Activity. We could also participate in two professional
workshops: How to prepare a great speech? given by Glenn Standish and How to develop optics
industry? given by Anastasios Maurudis.

The visit of high school students under the project ‘Meetings in the optics laboratory’
We were visited by a group of students from the various high schools from our province. During
this event our quests participated in the lecturer prepared by dr Anna Szkulmowska ‘Why you
should study physics in our Institute?’. After that they could visit our laboratories and did some
manual- optics work with our members: Danuta Bukowska, Ewa Kwiatkowska, Szymon Tamborski
and Daniel Ruminski.

A participant election to the Annual Meeting 2009
There were two candidates:
Agnieszka Gorska
Karol Karnowski
Both are very active members of our Chapter SPIE. They had to prepare the 15 minutes
presentation in English. All attendees voted. Both talks were professionally prepared. It was really
hurt to decide which of them should be the next president. We asked them why they wanted to
be the president and what idea of the chapter they had. Finally the new president of Nicolaus
Copernicus University SPIE Chapter would be Karol Karnowski.
He starts to serve in October 2010 after return from the Annual Meeting in San Diego 2010.

Demonstration of Optical harf
Mariusz Dazinski is a student of technical physics at the Nicolaus Copernicus University. He is very
active member of SPIE Chapter Torun. 2007 SPIE has awarded a $1000 scholarship to Mariusz. He
spent money for doing an “optical harp” In the project he used a pointing laser from which the
beam is split onto eight channels by a microscopic glasses. Each channel is equipped with a
phototransistor to detects the laser light. The beam from a single channel
generate the
appropriate tone in a speaker. Whole device is controlled by a microcontroller which is also
responsible for generation the acoustic signals. Here is a final result of his work:

IVth International SPIE Students’ Chapters Meeting
14-16 May 2009
We cultivate the tradition which arose in Wrocław, Poland four years ago and has been
successfully carried on since then. After three unforgettable annual meetings in Wrocław we
gather in Toruo.
Although the place changed, the goal of the Conference did not – to exchange scientific
experience by young researches and to help students to make first steps towards their future
careers. According to the SPIE mission, we all meet in the field of optics and photonics. This is
what we are interested in and apply our skills to.
During the conference 7 professional scientists (Wieslaw Nowak, PhD. - Photoactive enzymes and
computers; Maciej Wojtkowski, PhD. - Application of Fourier domain OCT in ophthalmology future developments; Robert Huber, PhD. - Recent advances in rapidly wavelength swept lasers for
optical coherence tomography; Maria L. Calvo, PhD. - New emerging holographic techniques
implementations in photopolymerizable glasses; Chantal Andraud, PhD. - Chromophores for
biophotonic related applications; Henryk Kasprzak, PhD. - Interferometric evaluation of the tear
film stability on the cornea and the contact lens; Artur Podhorodecki, PhD. - Optical Properties of
Nanocrystalline Materials) and 29 students presented their lectures. Except for eight technical
sessions, another one was focused on SPIE Chapters’ Activity. We could participate in two

The Demonstration Classes in Physics
The Demonstration Classes in Physics are a continuation of our educational project Back to School.
In this year the Demonstration Classes in Physics were held at Konin, Poland in January 2010, and
were hosted by the Regional Development Agency in Konin, which is a organization responsible for
improving and broadening pupils’ scientific knowledge. Each year we run one free hands-on
workshop for continuous professional development, where members of NCU chapter SPIE visit
school on the periphery of the city and work in groups and individually on a creative project. The
main idea of this meeting was to demonstrate the nature of the scientific enterprise through the
process of prediction, experimentation, observation and explanation. The success key is to give
pupils a chance to do all activities themselves and discuss about problems and exchange ideas on
how to solve them.
Preparing the program we decided to use in the various activities cheap and commonplace materials
allow for the activities to be tried again at home. Results of all activities could also be recorded on
the worksheet. After each experiment a brief discussion arriving at an explanation of what
happened ends the activity.
The program of one Demonstration Classes in Physics consisted of two parts: one hour performance
and two hours hands-on workshop. Details of this event you can see below.
Show 1: Thermal expansion of metals
Show 2: The implosion of tin
Show 3: The suction of the egg to the bottle
migration
Show 4: An alcohol
Show 5: Properties of non-Newtonian fluid
Show 6: An explosion of flour
During the workshop students learn:
Workshop I:
How to find the focal length of a lens
Workshop II:
How to get the best magnification of
objects
Workshop III: How to build a refracting telescope and use it
Workshop IV: Refraction of light
Workshop V: How to create 3D cinema at home using a filter, a pendulum and preparing
film by us (Pulfrich effect)
During two weeks of January our activities involved 19 regional secondary schools, chosen from
Regional Development Agency’s priority schools list, 13 teachers (students and PhD student from
NCU chapter SPIE), 60 optical kids and 3 cars. We met with 1200 students, covered a distance
1500 km, and worked 143 hours very actively. We are full of optimism because we have a big
satisfaction of this event. I believe that project was a big success and we plan to do this again.
HIT THE TARGET
We cooperated with NCU OSA Student Chapter with preparation to Hit the target program. This
new one chapter in our University started in Hit the target grant competition. Their grant proposal
for Hit the target as part of LaserFest’s Laser Days program was approved We prepared leaflet and
poster. Here are results:
