The Polish Constitution of the 3rd of
May 1791, while never actually instituted,
remains nonetheless an object of great pride
in the history of Poland. It is recognized as
the second earliest document of its kind, created just a few years after the Constitution of

bowiem do ludzi, których określamy mianem
„zamkniętych w sobie”. Jest zaskakująco skromny,
zważywszy na pozycję jaką zajmuje w biznesie będąc
właścicielem świetnie prosperującej firmy, zatrudniającej
wielu pracowników. Z uśmiechem, ale stanowczo strzeże
swojej prywatności. Na szczęście, to nie pierwszy mój
wywiad, więc z trudem, ale udało mi się z rozmówcy
„wyciągnąć” to i owo…
W opinii Georga Sobieraja największą wartością
jest RODZINA. Rodzina, która w dzisiejszym świecie,
jak twierdzi, jest spychana przez rząd, media, samo
społeczeństwo na margines. George bardzo ubolewa nad
upadkiem wartości rodziny, która - jak podkreśla - „jest
przecież podstawą zdrowo funkcjonującego
społeczeństwa”. Dla niego zawsze było i jest ważne, aby
rodzina trzymała się razem i zachowywała swoje
odrębne, cenne tradycje – to wzbogaca społeczeństwo.
O sobie George wypowiada się z wielką
powściągliwością. Określa siebie jako człowieka trudu i
ciężkiej pracy. Jest ambitny i honorowy. Szanuje ludzi i
traktuje wszystkich z godnością, z tego jest znany wśród

swoich pracowników. Ukończył Uniwersytet w Dayton
na wydziale Business Management. Posiada
wielostronne doświadczenie jako przemysłowiec i
inwestor, jest członkiem zarządów w wielu firmach. W
1980 roku założył zakład Rubber City Machinery Corp
w Akron Ohio. Jest szeroko uznawany jako ekspert od
maszyn do produkcji wyrobów z gumy. George Sobieraj
uważa, że człowiek powinien dawać z siebie więcej niż
„tylko” zaangażowanie w pracę, stąd jego działalność w
organizacjach takich jak Cleveland Society of Poles, a
teraz Polsko-Amerykańskie Centrum Kultury.
Do Centrum trafił za pośrednictwem i zachętą
Eugeniusza Bąka, od razu też stał się bardzo hojnym
sponsorem PACC. Pozwolę sobie właśnie w tym
miejscu wszystkim, którzy nie wiedzą „zdradzić sekret”,
że fortepian, którego z zamiłowaniem słuchamy przy
różnych okazjach, został ufundowany właśnie przez
Georga Sobieraja i Marka Bąka.
George rozpromienia się, kiedy mówimy o jego
żonie i rodzinie. Ma czworo dzieci i ośmioro wnucząt.
Lubi obserwować swoje wnuki biegające po jego
pięknym, rozległym ogrodzie – to jego radość, duma,
satysfakcja, spełnienie, to wnosi w jego duszę pokój...
O swojej żonie, Karen, George mówi z
miłością: „Jest moją trzecią ręką! Nie mam
wystarczających słów, żeby o niej dobrze, godnie
opowiedzieć. Ona wie o mnie więcej niż sam wiem”.
Rozmawiając z Georgem myślałam: ludzie z
silnym charakterem postępują właściwie nie dlatego, że
myślą, że zmienią przez to świat, lecz dlatego, że nie

Who is the new president of the
Polish-American Cultural Center?
After the election of a new president of Centrum,
questions were asked: “Who exactly is this Mr. Sobieraj”?
Is it his innate modesty and humility causing that we
know so little about him, a person known in the American
social circles and in the world of business? This puzzle
surrounding the new president provoked me to set up an
interview with George Sobieraj, so we could satisfy our
curiosity.
We are sitting in the conference room of Centrum, Mr. Sobieraj is surrounded by an aura of quiet tranquility and poise, a smile does not disappear from his
face. He turns out to be an unusual, mysterious, even a
difficult person to talk to about himself – because he belongs to people we call “humble”. He is surprisingly modest considering his position in the world of business as an
owner of a well prospering firm employing many workers.
He protects his privacy with a smile, but decisively. Luckily, this is not my first interview, so with some difficulty I
am able to get from him this and that…
In the opinion of George Sobieraj the most important value is the FAMILY. It is the family that is being
pushed aside in today’s world, as he states, by the government, media, society itself. George very much regrets the
decline of the family, which – he emphasizes – “is actually the basis of a healthy functioning society.” It was and
it is for him important that the family keeps together and
retains its distinct and valuable traditions – this is what
enriches society.
George talks about himself with great reluctance.
He describes himself as a man of hard work. He is ambitious and honorable, treats everyone with respect and dignity, he is known for that among his employees. He
graduated from the University of Dayton with a degree in
Business Management and has a vast experience as a businessman and investor; he is a board member of many
companies. In 1980 he started his firm Rubber City Machinery Corp in Akron, Ohio. He is widely recognized as
an expert in the field of machines making products from
rubber. George Sobieraj is of opinion that a man should
give more than “only” engagement in work, hence his
activity in such organizations as Cleveland Society of
Poles, and now Polish-American Cultural Center.

He came to Centrum through the mediation and
encouragement of Eugeniusz Bak, and he immediately
became a generous sponsor of PACC. Let me tell you a
secret, to all who do not know, that the grand piano we so
often listen to on many occasions was made possible in
part by George Sobieraj along with Mark Bak!
George brightens up when we talk about his wife
and family. He has four children and eight grandchildren.
He likes to observe his grandchildren running around in
his beautiful and vast garden – it is his joy, pride, satisfaction, fulfillment, it brings peace into his soul.

About his wife Karen George speaks with love:
“She is my third hand! I do not have enough good and
dignified words to describe her. She knows more about
me than I do.”
While talking to George I thought: people with a
strong character do things properly not because they
think they will change the world, but because they do not
agree the world to change them. George Sobieraj remains
himself in every situation, the world is not capable to
change him, difficulties to break him, people to discourage him… A man like this is now the president of our
Centrum.
During a certain moment during our conversation George said dreamily with hope: “I think that I will
be remembered in the future as a nice fellow” – that is
what I wish him in the name of Forum

Tego jeszcze nie było
Redakcja Forum spieszy z zawiadomieniem, że
malarz o międzynarodowej sławie, Julian Stańczak,
zamieszkały w Seven Hills (Cleveland) wkrótce
otrzyma zaszczytny tytuł doktora honoris causa
Case Western Reserve University. Według
profesora CWRU, Henry Adamsa, PhD, tego
rodzaju zaszczyt nie przypadł jeszcze do tej pory
żadnemu malarzowi.
O Julianie Stańczaku pisaliśmy już poprzednio
w Forum (Nr 10/112) w numerze z października
2011 roku. Tym razem chcemy tylko przypomnieć,
kim jest J. Stańczak, i dlaczego dostaje wyróżnienie
takiej wysokiej klasy.
Julian Stańczak urodził się w 1928 roku w
Polsce, w Borownicy. Lata wojenne spędził wraz z
rodziną na tułaczce, najpierw na Syberii, potem
poprzez Azję, środkowy wschód wylądował w
obozie polskich uchodźców w Afryce, w Ugandzie.
Jego marzeniem było zostać muzykiem, ale w
obozie syberyjskim został tak ciężko pobity, że
stracił władanie w prawej ręce. Skierował zatem
swoje zainteresowanie na malarstwo, i właśnie w
Ugandzie otrzymał swoje pierwsze lekcje prywatne.
W 1948 roku wyjechał wraz z rodziną do Londynu,
a w 1950 roku wyemigrował do Stanów. W 1954
roku ukończył studia w Cleveland Institute of Art, a
w 1956 roku został magistrem sztuki w Szkole
Sztuk Pięknych w Yale University pod dyrekcją
profesorów J. Albert i C. M. Relli. W 1963 roku
ożenił się z Barbarą M. Meerpohl i przeniósł do
Cleveland, gdzie uczył w CIA w latach 1964 do
1995.
Pierwszą nagrodę Julian Stańczak otrzymał w
1961 roku, w Cincinnati Centrum Współczesnej
Sztuki. Jego pierwsza ważniejsza (samodzielna)
wystawa pod tytułem „Julian Stańczak: Malarstwo
Wzrokowe (Optical Paintings)” wystawiona w
Galerii Marty Jackson w Nowym Yorku, przyniosła
mu natychmiastową sławę, a ten nowy kierunek
malarski, który zainicjował wraz z innymi, nazwany
został Op Art. Od tego czasu jego malarstwo

nabrało olbrzymiej popularności. Jako ciekawostkę
podajemy tu wiadomość o jego ostatniej wystawie
w Akron Muzeum Sztuki pod tytułem „Iluzje
Kolorowych Linii: 40 Lat Sztuki Juliana
Stańczaka.”
Nie chcemy się tu rozpisywać o jego
twórczości, międzynarodowych i krajowych
wystawach, nagrodach i publikacjach, wystarczy
tylko wspomnieć, że Julian Stańczak był naczelnym
twórcą jednego z ważniejszych prądów malarskich
20-tego stulecia, tzw. Op Art. Chcielibyśmy tu
przytoczyć słowa sponsorów J. Stańczaka do tytułu
doktora honorowego, profesorów H. Adams, PhD i
R. Hanson, PhD: „Stańczak powinien na pewno
otrzymać honorowy tytuł z CWRU z wielu
powodów 1) Jest artystą o międzynarodowej
sławie, którego prace znajdują się w ważniejszych
muzeach, i który jest uznany na świecie jako twórca
Op Art. 2) Jest odznaczonym nauczycielem: jako
nauczyciel zmienił życie swoich studentów nie
tylko poprzez nauczanie wspaniałej techniki, ale
także rozszerzając ich intelekt, oraz duchową i
moralną świadomość. 3) Jest figurą łączącą
kierunki sztuki, nauki, matematyki i metafizyki w
taki sposób, że przedstawia model twórczego
myślenia reprezentowanego przez CWRU. Jego
praca wzywa także ludzi w tych kierunkach do
myślenia w nowy sposób. 4) Jego inspirująca
historia życia jest przykładem na to, jak ciężka
praca, zaangażowanie, odwaga i twórczość może
pokonywać przeszkody i klęski. 5) Stałby się
przykładem dla ludzi z clevelandzkiego regionu, bo
pokazał, że człowiek może mieć bogate życie
osobiste i być członkiem swojej społeczności, a
jednocześnie być także twórcą światowej klasy.
Najważniejszą rolą honorowego doktoratu jest nie
tylko wyróżnienie poszczególnej osoby, ale
stworzenie modelu doskonałości, który zainspiruje
nas do osiągnięcia wyższych celów i osiągnięć.
Życie i osiągnięcia Juliana Stańczaka to właśnie
taki model”.

This did not happen yet
The Staff of Forum would like to inform its
readers, that the internationally renowned painter,
Julian Stanczak, living in Seven Hills (Cleveland),
will be granted soon an honorary doctoral degree
from Case Western Reserve University (CWRU).
According to Henry Adams PhD, professor at
CWRU, no painter has ever received this distinction.
We previously wrote about Julian Stanczak
in Forum in October 2011 (Nr 10/112). This time we
only want to remind you who J. Stanczak is, and why
is he receiving such a special distinction.
Julian Stanczak was born in the year 1928 in
Borownica, Poland. He spent the war years as a wanderer, first in Siberia, then passing through Asia and
Middle East to end up in the Polish refugee camp in
Uganda, Africa. His dream was to become a musician, but he was so severely beaten in the Siberian
camp, that he lost the use of his right arm. Then he
turned his attention to art, and in Uganda he received
his first private lessons. In 1948 he and his family left
for London, and in 1950 they immigrated to USA. In
1954 he graduated from the Cleveland Institute of
Art, and in 1956 he got his master’s degree in Fine
Arts from the School of Fine Arts of Yale University
under the direction of professors J. Albert and C.M.
Relli. In 1963 he married Barbara M. Meerpohl and
moved to Cleveland, where he taught at CIA during
the years 1964-1995.
He received his first award in 1961 from the
Cincinnati Contemporary Art Center. His first own
major show “Julian Stanczak: Optical Paintings” held
at the Martha Jackson Gallery in New York brought
him immediate fame, and the new art movement he
initiated with others was coined Op Art. Since then
his art became very popular. As a curiosity we list
here information about his last exhibition in Akron
Art Museum “Line Color Illusion: 40 Years of Julian
Stanczak.”

We do not want to write a lot here about
his creative output, international and national exhibitions, awards and publications, it is enough to
mention that Julian Stanczak: was the principal
originator of one of the major art movements of
the 20th century, the so called Op Art. We would
like to quote here the words of his sponsors for
the honoris causa degree, Professors H. Adams,
PhD and R. Hanson, PhD: “For a variety of reasons, Stanczak is surely worthy of an honorary
degree from CWRU. 1) He is an artist of international stature, whose work is represented in major
museum collections and who is renowned worldwide as the founding figure of Optical Art. 2) He
is an award-winning teacher of national distinction who has transformed the lives of his students,
not only through superb technical training, but by
expanding their intellectual, sensory, spiritual and
moral consciousness. 3) He is a figure who connects the disciplines of art, science, mathematics,
and metaphysics in a way that provides a model
of the kind of creative thinking exemplified by
CWRU. His work has also challenged people in
these disciplines to think in new ways. 4) He has
a uniquely inspiring life-story that provides a
model of how hard work, intense focus, courage
and creativity can overcome horrors and diversity. 5) He would provide particular inspiration to
the people of the Cleveland region, since he has
shown that an individual here can live a rich personal life and can be a valued member of his local
community while also producing world-class accomplishments. A central purpose of honorary
degrees such as this is not simply to honor a particular individual but to provide a model of excellence which can inspire us to raise our own goals
and to push for a higher a nobler level of achievement. The life and accomplishments of Julian
Stanczak provide exactly such a model.”

Drogi Czytelniku,
Czy zdajesz sobie sprawę, w jakich my
czasach żyjemy i jak daleko do przodu posunęła
się technologia? Nie chcę się tu zastanawiać nad
tym, dokąd ten postęp prowadzi, chcę ci tylko
uświadomić, drogi Czytelniku, jakie to olbrzymie
zmiany następują wokół nas.
Popatrzmy najpierw na książki. Nie wiem
jak ty, ale ja lubiłem wstępować do księgarni,
oglądać okładki nowych książek, przeglądać
nowości, wertować strony… Księgarń było pełno,
teraz jedyna, która została w Cleveland, Barnes &
Noble, ledwo się trzyma, a wszystkie inne znikły.
Co się stało? Mamy urodzaj książek
elektronicznych, które można sobie naładować do
komputera w domu. Mamy także sklepy
internetowe, gdzie rolę sprzedawców przejęły
komputery. Jeżeli zaś chodzi o podręczniki
szkolne, to coraz więcej szkół, szczególnie w
zamożniejszych dzielnicach, daje uczniom
komputery (IPads), przy pomocy których zasięgają
oni potrzebnych sobie informacji i przygotowują
się do lekcji. Za pośrednictwem komputerów
uczniowie utrzymują kontakt z nauczycielami, i
zdają egzaminy…
Jeżeli chodzi o studia, to dzisiaj można je
często zaliczyć poprzez Internet, włącznie z
otrzymaniem tytułu doktora!
Parę dni temu czytałem wywiad z prezesem
PNC, jednego z największych banków w USA.
Między innymi mowa była o przyszłości banków.
Jego zdaniem oddziały lokalne banków nie znikną
całkowicie, ale będzie ich coraz mniej. Dlaczego?
Otóż coraz więcej ludzi używa swoje komputery i
telefony komórkowe do załatwiania transakcji
finansowych. Nie wiem czy pamiętasz te czasy,
czytelniku, kiedy założenie linii telefonicznej było
hucznie świętowane przez całą okolicę. Dzisiaj
telefon komórkowy to niezbędna „część
garderoby”. Telefon używany jest nie tylko do

rozmów, ale również do tekstowania, do robienia
zdjęć, do połączenia z Internetem, do oglądania
TV, do gier, do… Jednym słowem, dla wielu ludzi
jest po prostu niezbędny.
I pomyśleć, że sześćdziesiąt lat temu, ten
komputer z telefonu komórkowego zająłby
prawdopodobnie pojemność całego 6-ścio
piętrowego budynku.
Nie wiem, kiedy ostatnio obserwowałeś,
czytelniku, mechanika samochodowego przy
pracy. Jedną z jego pierwszych czynności przy
przeglądzie samochodu jest podłączenie komputera
warsztatowego do komputera w samochodzie, aby
sobie „porozmawiały”. Wynik tej rozmowy jest
przedstawiony w formie kodu, który mówi
mechanikowi, co ma zrobić. Czarna magia! Już nie
mówię o tym, że istnieją teraz samochody, które
„wyczuwają” niebezpieczeństwo kolizji i reagują
na nie (bez udziału kierowcy). Komputery są
dzisiaj nierozłącznym towarzyszem naszego życia.
Dla tych, którzy ciągle pozostają „w tyle” i
ociągają się z nauką obsługi komputera, podaję
najnowszy pomysł na nowoczesne sprzątanie w
domu z pomocą komputera według następującej
instrukcji informatyka:
Jeżeli masz bałagan w domu to zrób tak.
1. Załóż folder na pulpicie.
2. Nazwij folder „Bałagan w domu”.
3. Idź do kuchni i nalej sobie lampkę wina.
4. Naciśnij prawą stronę myszki, wybierz „usuń
folder”.
5. Kiedy komputer spyta „czy na pewno chcesz na
stałe usunąć „Bałagan w domu” odpowiedz „tak”.
6. Połóż nogi wygodnie na stole, wypij wino i
odpoczywaj – sprawa załatwiona.

Dear Reader,
Are you aware of the times we live in and
how far ahead today’s technology is? I do not
want to discuss where this technological progress
is leading, I only want you to realize what tremendous changes occur around us.
Let’s first look at books. I am not sure how
you feel about it, but I have enjoyed entering
bookstores, looking at the covers of new books,
skimming the novelties, turning over the pages…
Not long ago there were many bookstores. Now
the only one left in Cleveland, Barnes & Noble, is
struggling for survival, and all others disappeared. What happened? We have an abundance
of e-books that can be loaded unto a computer at
home. We also have Internet stores where the
computers took over the role of salespeople.
When it comes to textbooks, more and more
schools, especially in more affluent cities, give
students computers (IPads), which they use to
retrieve required information to prepare for lessons. With the help of computers students keep in
touch with teachers and pass exams…
When it comes to getting a degree, today
you can get it on the Internet, often even a doctor’s degree!
A couple of days ago I read an interview
with the chairman of PNC, one of the largest
banks in the USA. Among other things he talked
about the future of banks. In his opinion the local
branches of banks will not disappear completely,
but there will be only very few of them. Why? It
turns out that more and more people use computers and cell phones now to perform financial
transactions. I do not know, dear reader, if you
remember a time, when the installation of a telephone line was celebrated by the whole neighborhood. Today the cell phone is an integral part of
our “outfit”. The phone is used not only for conversations, but also for texting, for taking of

pictures, for a connection with the Internet, for
watching TV, for playing games, for…In one word, it
is for many people indispensable. And to think, that
60 years ago this computer from the cell phone would
probably fill a six-floor building.
I do not know when you last observed a car
mechanic at work. One of his first actions is to connect the garage computer to the car computer so they
can “talk” to each other. The result of this conversation is a code that tells the mechanic what to do.
Black magic! And I’d also like to mention cars here,
which “feel” the danger of a collision and react to it
(without the driver). Computers today are an integral
part of our life.
For those,
who are still “left
behind” and are slow
learning about the
computer, let me present here the newest
idea for a modern
house cleaning, with
the help of a computer, according to
the instruction of a
programmer:
If your house is in mess do that
1. Create a folder on the desktop.
2. Call the folder “Mess in the house.”
3. Go to the kitchen and pour yourself a glass of
wine.
4. Right click the mouse and choose “Delete folder.”
5. When the computer will ask you “are you sure you
want to permanently delete “Mess in the house” say
“yes.”
6. Put your legs on the table, drink your wine and
relax – it is done.
