Lecture – 15 hours
I. Introduction. Definition: revitalisation and new immage. The study of the post-industrial
areas of former industrial periods, and where appropriate their preservation. Effectively it is
the means of recording our industrial heritage.

II. Background. The major problem for Poland and Łódź is the speed of change occasioned
by the end of the command economy. Also there is a lack of interest in old industry because
it is old, but it is part of Poland’s heritage and should be recorded even if not preserved. In
most Western countries recorfing and preservation began in 1960s and 70s.
III. Case study: Great Britain (Manchester, Liverpool, London), Germany (Ruhr Coalfield),
Spain (Barcelona), France (Lille).
IV. Fieldwork: post-industrial areas’ of I.K. Poznański, K. Scheibler, L. Geyer and other.
Revitalisation or new immage. Culture and tradition of textile Łódź.
V. Visits will be made in Łódź to gain first hand experience.
