Printouts were kept in various environmental conditions, varying in light, heat and humidity, to determine the effect of these externals on the ageing rate and to find the optimal storage conditions for further examination of inkjet printed questioned documents. Absorption readings were taken regularly for 6 weeks in order to monitor any change in absorption. It was found that ageing effects were only observed for printouts stored in natural light, and the printouts sealed in a bag with silica gel aged slower than the printouts exposed to the room environment. Therefore, the optimal storage conditions to preserve printouts were established as a dry and dark environment. It was found that cyan ink containing substituted phthalocyanine can be considered as a marker of the document age. Introduction Analysis of printing inks from the criminalistic point of view is becoming more necessary as personal computers become more commonplace. In 2008, about 59% of Polish homes owned a computer [2], compared to about 36% in 2004 [10]. Inkjet printers accompany many of these personal computers and they are also present in a lot of business offices. Over recent years, technological development has led to the rapid expansion of the range of printers and ink compositions used throughout the world. Ageing of ink – and the accompanying degradation process – is dependent on the storage conditions of a document. There are two different approaches to dat- ing inks on documents – the static and the dynamic one. The first approach consists in determining the compositional profile of an examined ink, which is compared with a reference one. Such a comparison enables us to answer the question as to when the analyzed ink was used (to print the document) – before or after the ink standard (the relative age of ink). The dynamic approach looks at factors affecting the ageing process such as: evaporation of volatile components, oxidation, polymerization, ink-paper interactions, or a combination of these. It compares the relative ageing of items of the same composition and, in most cases, on the same document, to determine the absolute age of the ink [5, 8]. Ink dating remains a very difficult and challenging subject, even though dye degradation has been widely 134 M. Szafarska, R. Wietecha-Pos³uszny, M. WoŸniakiewicz et al. studied by many different analytical methods. Most of these studies have focused on the ageing of writing inks, i.e. ballpoint [3, 4, 5, 6, 8, 12], fountain [10] or roller and gel inks [7, 13]. Currently, there is very little published research into determining the age of inkjet printing inks [1]. Measurements over longer periods of time are necessary to find out if inkjet printing inks turn out to be as sensitive to light as ballpoint pen inks. Therefore, in this paper, the authors have presented results of examination of the ageing process in inkjet printing inks, paying special attention to dye degradation. Different environmental conditions, such as natural light, UV light, heat, and water – which all influence chemical changes of dyes – were taken into account. It should be emphasized that the composition of ink begins to change qualitatively and quantitatively as soon as it is deposited (printed) on paper. The UV/Vis absorption readings of extracted inks from printouts kept in various external conditions were recorded in order to observe the effects of different conditions on the rate of ageing. The results enabled us to determine the least destructive environment for safekeeping (storage) and to explore the possibility of using UV/Vis spectrometry to estimate the age of a document. ric measurements were taken using disposable micro UV cuvettes by Brandt (USA). VISIONlite software was applied to acquire and process recorded spectra. 2.3. Sample preparation In order to test the influence of different conditions on ageing of printouts, 10 calibration sheets with separate coloured squares of Cyan, Magenta and Yellow inks were printed using plain white paper, numbered from 1 to 10 and placed in various conditions, presented in Table I. These conditions were achieved using the storage means specified in Table II. TABLE I. Extraction of ink samples Using a hole-punch, a disc (0.4 cm) of each colour (Cyan, Magenta and Yellow) was punched out of each of the 10 printouts. These, along with a blank disc, were placed into separate glass bottles (31 in total), which were capped and labelled. 1.2 ml of the extracting agent (1:1 mixture of MEE and water) was pipetted into each of the bottles. Then, the samples were sonicated at room temperature for 15 minutes, transferred to labelled plastic centrifuge vials and centrifuged at 13000 rpm for 5 minutes to separate solid particles at the bottom of the vial. 1 ml of each extracted ink solution was then transferred to a UV-cuvette ready for UV/Vis analysis. The absorption readings were taken 18 times over the course of 6 weeks. 2.5. Collection of data Typical spectra measured for the examined inks are shown in Figure 1. The specific wavelengths of the bands were found: 631 and 667 nm for Cyan ink, 565 nm for Magenta ink and 406 for Yellow ink. Absorption readings measured on the day of printing (day 0) were used to create calibration graphs for each of the inks (Figure 2). The equations shown in Figure 2 were used to calculate the percentage of each dye remaining (IA – ink amount) from absorbance readings taken during the study, defined as: IA [%] = Ai × 100% , A0 {1} where Ai and A0 are values of the ink absorbance measured on a particular day and immediately after printing, respectively. Based on such calculations, ageing curves were drawn up and defined as relationships between IA and time. Fig. 1. Absorption scan graphs of: a) Cyan, b) Magenta, c) Yellow inks, with appropriately marked bands at a) 631 and 667 nm, b) 565 nm and c) 406 nm. 3. Results and discussion 3.1. Ageing patterns In Table III, the slopes of ageing curves are presented that correspond to all printouts stored in different conditions (numbered as in Table I). As seen, the inks were most affected over time by natural light, at a temperature of 21oC in either a dry environment or in natural humidity. Ageing curves obtained for printouts in these conditions are presented in Figure 3. Fig. 2. Calibration lines (A – absorbance vs. IA – ink amount) for inks: a) Cyan, b) Magenta, and c) Yellow. Problems of Forensic Sciences 2010, vol. LXXXII, 133–140 136 M. Szafarska, R. Wietecha-Pos³uszny, M. WoŸniakiewicz et al. TABLE III. SLOPES OF AGEING CURVES OBTAINED IN DIFFERENT CONDITIONS tions (dry and room humidity), Magenta ink (565 nm) ages most rapidly, but – in contrast to the other dyes – this effect decreases with time. In the same conditions, Cyan ink (631 nm) is destroyed significantly more slowly, but Yellow ink does not show any ageing effect or only to a very small degree. Although the relationships presented in Figure 3 show destructive changes in chemical composition of an ink, they would have limited usefulness in evaluation of the absolute age of a document. The point is that in real cases, the initial value of ink absorbance is unknown and, consequently, IA values cannot be found. However, it was discovered that such an opportunity is given by comparison of relative absorbances, especially those measured at 631 and 667 nm for Cyan ink. According to the information provided by the manufacturer in the Material Safety Data Sheet [9], both bands come from substituted phthalocyanine salt, the only dye used in the production process. As determined, on the day of printing, both bands are approximately of the same height (i.e. with ratio equal to 1) but in the course of time, the band observed at 631 nm is evidently destroyed slightly faster than the other one. So, if the ratio of the two signals is dependent on time, the obtained relationships (shown in Figure 4) can be useful in indirect determination of the age of the examined document. Ageing curves obtained for Cyan, Magenta and Yellow inks in conditions defined in Table II as 5 (a) and 6 (b). It can be concluded that natural storage conditions (natural light and room temperature) are best for subsequent determination of document ageing. Degradation of inks was not able to be significantly engendered by either storage in dark conditions or irradiation by UV light. The obtained results suggest that in higher humidity, the ageing is slightly faster. In both condi- The method has many advantages, such as: – the substituted phthalocyanine dye is subjected to the same conditions during the processes of printing, storage, extraction and analysis. Therefore, it can be expected that the absorption ratio measured for these two bands in the ink cartridge of the HP Business Inkjet 1200 printer should always be 1; – the printer settings, print content and extraction procedure should not affect the ratio, as any random or systematic inconsistencies affect both read- Problems of Forensic Sciences 2010, vol. LXXXII, 133–140 137 Influence of storage conditions on ageing of colour dye-based inkjet... ings equally (it is seen that the measurement points in Figure 4 are biased by such errors much less than the points shown in Figure 3); – the ratio of absorbances decreases slowly and consistently over the course of time, which gives a chance to determine the age of relatively old documents; – the relationships are considered to be independent of humidity of air (as seen in Figure 4). 2. 3. 4. 4. Conclusions The performed examinations show that the degradation of ink on printouts (from the HP Business Inkjet 1200 printer) is strongly influenced by light. It was also revealed that humidity may play a part in the rate of ageing, although not to the same extent as light. The influence of heat on the degradation process was found to be rather weak. Consequently, the best conditions for the preservation of a document would be in a dark and dry environment. A promising method for the estimation of the age of a document was developed. The idea is quite simple: when the absorbance ratio of two ink dyes (or two bands originating from one dye) is of defined value for fresh ink (just transferred from a cartridge to a document) and progressively changes with time in accordance to a well defined dependence, the absorbance ratio found on a given day for this ink on the document should be a measure of the age of this document. It was revealed that for inks produced by Hewlett-Packard in which substituted phthalocyanine salts are used, two Cyan bands absorbing at 631 and 667 nm fulfil the requirements to be good markers for establishing the document age by this method. In practice, before this method is applied, further research is required, especially verification of its repeatability and reproducibility, depending on duration and intensity of light exposure. A database with curves (graphs) showing the ratio of two ageing signals against a long period of time (e.g. 2 years) for various kind of inks originating from different producers would be very useful. Therefore, additional studies including a greater set of inks coming from different manufacturers are planned. Moreover, a longer time of printout storage and application of an ageing chamber with adjustable conditions are considered in order to enhance the findings of the presented examination. References 1. Wstêp Z punktu widzenia kryminalistyki problem analizy atramentów do drukarek staje siê coraz bardziej istotny z powodu ich coraz powszechniejszego wystêpowania. W 2008 roku oko³o 59% polskich gospodarstw domowych posiada³o w³asny komputer [2] w porównaniu do 36% w 2004 roku [10]. Nale¿y podkreœliæ, ¿e sk³ad jakoœciowy i iloœciowy atramentu ulega zmianie ju¿ w momencie naniesienia go na papier. 2. Materia³ i metody 2.1. Odczynniki chemiczne i próbki 2-(2-metoksyetoksy)etanol (MEE) (99%) pochodzi³ z firmy Aldrich (Niemcy). Woda destylowana by³a przygotowana za pomoc¹ metody odwróconej osmozy i nastêpnie poddawana demineralizacji. Stosowano nastêpuj¹ce atramenty do drukarek: HP Cyan (C4836A), Magenta (C4837A) i Yellow (C4838A) u¿ywany w drukarce HP Business Inkjet 1200. Wszystkie wydruki przygotowano, u¿ywaj¹c zwyk³ych i powszechnie dostêpnych papierów do drukarek – PolSpeed (International Paper, Polska) o gramaturze 80 g/m2. 2.2. Aparatura Proces starzenia siê atramentów zwi¹zany z wp³ywem promieniowania UV by³ wywo³ywany sztucznie przy u¿yciu lampy UV (Cabrabid, Polska). Procesu ekstrakcji dokonano w ³aŸni ultradŸwiêkowej Sonic 3 (Polsonic, Polska). W celu odwirowania próbek przed dokonaniem pomiarów spektrofotometrycznych stosowano wirówkê MPW-250 (MPW Med. Instruments, Polska). Wszystkie pomiary spektrofotometryczne wykonano, u¿ywaj¹c mikrokuwet UV (Brandt, Stany Zjednoczone). Do zbierania widm zastosowano program VISIONlite. finiowano krzywe starzenia siê atramentów jako zale¿noœci pomiêdzy wartoœci¹ IA i czasem. 2.3. Atrament Magenta (565 nm) ulega szybkiemu starzeniu siê w przeciwieñstwie do innych barwników zarówno w przypadku przechowywania wydruków w œrodowisku suchym, jak i wilgotnym. Efekt ten maleje wraz z up³ywem czasu. Wraz z up³ywem czasu intensywnoœæ linii 631 nm ulega szybszemu obni¿eniu ni¿ linii 667 nm. Dlatego te¿ stosunek obu sygna³ów tych linii zale¿ny jest od czasu, a uzyskana zale¿noœæ zaprezentowana na rycinie 4 mo¿e byæ zastosowana do oceny wieku badanych dokumentów. 2.3. 1,2 ml mieszaniny ekstrakcyjnej (mieszanina MEE i wody w stosunku 1:1) przeniesiono pipet¹ do ka¿dej z butelek. 1 ml ka¿dego z ekstraktów przenoszono do UV-kuwet i poddawano analizie. W ci¹gu 6 tygodni ka¿da próbka by³a analizowana ³¹cznie 18 razy. 2.4. Wykonanie pomiarów Na rycinie 1 zamieszczono przyk³adowe widmo jednego z analizowanych ekstraktów. Ustalono charakterystyczne linie widmowe dla poszczególnych barwników: 631 i 667 nm dla Cyanu, 565 nm dla Magenty i 406 nm dla Yellow. Wartoœci absrobcji mierzone w dniu drukowania (dzieñ 0) zosta³y u¿yte w celu wykonania krzywych ilustruj¹cych przebieg procesu starzenia ka¿dego z atramentów (rycina 2). Ponadto planuje siê wykonanie badañ nad procesem starzenia siê wydruków przechowywanych w ró¿nych warunkach i przez d³u¿szy czas w celu potwierdzenia danych przedstawionych w niniejszym artykule. 4. Opracowana zosta³a obiecuj¹ca metoda oceny wieku dokumentów. Dwa pasma absorpcyjne (631 nm i 667 nm) charakterystyczne dla atramentu Cyan wykaza³y, ¿e mog¹ byæ one z powodzeniem stosowane do okreœlania wieku dokumentów opisan¹ powy¿ej metod¹.
