KSIĄŻKI WYDANE W 2007 ROKU Wiesław Boryś, Etymologie słowiańskie i polskie. Wybór studiów z okazji 45-lecia pracy naukowej, red. Władysław Sędzik i in., Warszawa, Slawistyczny Ośrodek Wydawniczy, 750 s. The book consists of selected articles written by Wiesław Boryś in the period from 1963 to 2006. Władysław Chłopicki, Andrzej Pawelec, Agnieszka Pokojska red., Cognition in Language: Volume in Honour of Professor Elżbieta Tabakowska, Kraków, Tertium, 680 s. The volume contains selected papers delivered at the conference of Polish applied linguists, which took place in 2006 in Cracow. Kinga Maciuszak, Średnioperski poemat „Drzewo asyryjskie” i jego partyjska geneza, Kraków, Księgarnia Akademicka, 189 s. The knotty Pahlavi poem Draxt ī āsūrīg concerning a contest for superiority between a demoniac date palm and an uncanny goat, belongs to Middle Persian wisdom literature, which was intended both to sharpen the wits and to give instruction. This poem, due to the language mixture (Pahlavi with many Parthian elements), its verse form and rare vocabulary, presents considerable difficulties. It contains not only many irregular lexical items, but also special vocabulary of a rare occurrence, which are to be found neither in any other published Middle Persian texts nor extant glossaries. The establishment of the original spelling of certain words of this originally Parthian composition, owing to alternations in the course of oral transmission, edition in the Book Pahlavi script, the usual corruptions and mistakes made by more or less ignorant scribes and generations of copyists, is a challenging task. In spite of numerous scholarly and editorial efforts, discussion and commentary on the text have been by no means full so far. There is no doubt that this poem – originally a song – is a Middle Persian adaptation of a Parthian unwritten or lost original. Almost certainly, this Pahlavi rendering had also been orally transmitted until after the Arab conquest, and then, was written down by order of Zoroastrian priests, who concentrated their activities on the preservation of religious and wisdom literature. Among other things, there is still no agreement as to its character. According to some scholars, the dispute exposes the opposition between two faiths, with Informacje wydziałowe 13 the goat representing Zoroastrianism and the palm standing for the pagan religions of Assyria and Babylonia, in which a cult of trees formed an important part. Many others, quite contrary, claim it is a rare example of a secular verse text; in fact a manifestation of the contrast between pastoral (the goat) and agricultural life (the palm-tree). Although all these suggestions seem to be reasonable, there are also other traces, which allow us to view the meaning of this symbolic text with a fresh relationship. Numerous hints and references to the Mazdayasnian faith in the text could allow us to consider it not to be quite secular in spirit, although it lacks the usual Zoroastrian admonitory approach (typical for other Pahlavi texts against Jews, Christians, Manichaeans, Buddhists). It is well known that harshness, severity and orthodox attitude towards the religion did not characterize the Parthians, but their successors, the Sasanians. The Parthians had a political idea, central to which was a commitment to Iran as a national concept and considered themselves to be the heirs of the Achaemenids. Moreover, they maintained in general the Achaemenian tolerance regarding the beliefs of non-Iranians. Therefore the theory that the text is a religious polemic against Mesopotamian faith is rather weak. One can assume that the horned goat represents the Parthian empire, its power, pride and might (a huge horn) and its cultural legacy, being a mixture of Iranian tradition and Greek motives. The goat seems to be the heir of the threelegged, white ass living in the Wourukasha sea, the goat who fed the first human couple Mashya and Mashyana, and also the Greek Amalthea and the Alexander the Great kingdom (cf. the vision from the Book of Daniel). It is as tolerant as Parthians used to be. It feeds every man, and every nation, despite the religion they profess. In the textual remains of ancient Iranian culture there is a notable absence of the plant and animal fables so abundant in Western classical tradition. The form of the original Mesopotamian fable (two opponents: plant versus animal) forced its Parthian composer to choose what personage would represent his ideas better (i.e. would be the winner): he chose the goat (contrary to Near Eastern texts where the tree always wins, and the goat is the looser). Thus the text is a rearrangement (re-telling) of foreign fable patterns with Iranian motives and characters. The importance of goats in the Iranian world is not to be overestimated. For the poor in Iran, as in many dry regions, the goat plays the role of both the cow and the sheep. Moreover, the Parthians’ enemy, the Romans considered it to be an animal harmful. In the first century B.C. Varro in De re rustica, I. 2.18– 20 discoursed on their destructiveness to vines, which allegedly provided the motive for their sacrifice to Bacchus. Fables represent universal truth, which can be referred to any situation, religious or political. The Assyrian Tree is such a parable, where the horned animal symbolizes Iranian (Parthian) legal right and authority, while the proud tall tree represents any foreign kingdom, boasting of its superiority (cf. the Biblical visions). Since finally the greatest Parthian’s opponents proved to be not Romans or Greeks, but Sasanians, their relatives, one may assume that this text afterwards could have been also aimed at them. 14 INFORMACJE WYDZIAŁOWE Anna Niżegorodcew, Input for Instructed L2 Learners: The Relevance of Relevance, Clevedon, Multilingual Matters, 192 s. W pierwszym autorka przedstawia rozumienie pojęcia „dane wejściowe” w teorii relewancji i wybranych teoriach przyswajania języka drugiego. W rozdziale drugim ukazuje rolę danych wejściowych w perspektywie dydaktycznej, natomiast w trzecim – przedstawia język nauczyciela w ramach analizy dyskursu w klasie szkolnej. Rozdział czwarty prezentuje badania prowadzone w ramach siedmiu prac magisterskich w ciągu dwudziestu lat. Grażyna Pietrzak-Porwisz, Metonimia i metafora w strukturze semantycznej szwedzkich somatyzmów hjärta ‘serce’, ansikte ‘twarz’ i hand ‘ręka’ [w:] Antoni Dębski red., Studien zum polnisch-deutschen Sprachvergleich 6, Kraków, Wydawnictwo Uniwersytetu Jagiellońskiego, 253 s. The purpose of the study is to give a detailed analysis of the semantics of three Swedish body part terms: hjärta (‘heart’), ansikte (‘face’) and hand (‘hand, arm’). Focus has been placed on their figurative senses. The linguistic data have been obtained from the web-based Språkbanken (the Bank of Swedish) at Gothenburg University. The analysis adopts the framework of cognitive linguistics and relies on the assumption that linguistic structures reflect human conceptualization. Metaphor and metonymy are regarded as cognitive devices which help to conceptualize more abstract and complex concepts using an other concepts that are more concrete, physical, and well grounded in experience. Body parts have developed a rich, polysemous lexical representation. The study intends to document how body part terms extend their meanings and how metonymical extensions interact with metaphorical projections in semantic transfers. Informacje wydziałowe 15 Renata Rodak, Różne wcielenia negacji. O typach znaczeń negatywnych w procesie interpretacji wypowiedzeń przedstawiających, tom 1 serii: Studia z Gramatyki Komunikacyjnej, pod red. Aleksego Awdiejewa i G. Habrajskiej, Łask, Oficyna Wydawnicza LEKSEM, 182 s. Renata Rodak’s Various incarnations of negation is a monograph on the concept of negation where the emphasis is first and foremost on its communicative value. The book not only puts in order the linguistic knowledge about negation but it also comprises a fresh and consistent from the point of view of linguistic communication approach to the analysed issues. Dorota Zielińska, Proceduralny model języka. Językoznawstwo z pozycji teorii modeli nauk empirycznych, Kraków, Wydawnictwo Uniwersytetu Jagiellońskiego, 182 s. The Procedural model of language outlines a new direction of language modeling. It consists of three chapters. In Chapter I, after reviewing the well known problems concerning the limited adequacy of the assumptions made when modeling language with help of formal logic, the author looks at language from a broader perspective – the theory of models in empirical sciences. As a result, she adumbrates the foundations of a new model of language, which crucially involves a selective mode of language use, (in addition to the received encoding based mode) and a communicational field. This model proposes also a new tool for interpreting linguistic meaning at large, including the language of the theory of empirical sciences. In Chapter II, the author illustrates a range of applications of the model in qualitative terms: the model allows one to account for a number of well known linguistic phenomena within a uniform framework as well as to show some new aspects of language functioning. (The model with its qualitative applications was presented to an international audience in the article “The selective mode of language use and the quantized communicative field” Journal of Pragmatics vol. 39 (5), 813–830. In the Focus–on issue: Formal and philosophical aspects of pragmatics.) In chapter III, a specific linguistic phenomenon, that of the order of selected semantic classes of adjectives in noun phrases (namely “opinion,” “size,” “shape,” “age,” “colour.” “origin,” “material”), is investigated in a rigorous, quantitative way using Polish and British corpuses with help of the model. The proposed model lets one explain the well attested order observed, and predict correlations which have not been noticed so far, which are also verified experimentally. Синтаксис, Kraków, Wydawnictwo Uniwersytetu Jagiellońskiego, 276 s. Gramatyka współczesnego języka ukraińskiego. Morfologia.
