POZNAN UNIVERSITY OF MEDICAL SCIENCES
POLAND
General information
Poznan University of Medical Sciences (PUMS) is one of the largest medical universities in Poland with over 90 years of academic experience and
with great potential for development. Our University is a leading medical
school in Poland. It is a major educational, research and clinical center.
Clinical teaching and research are mainly based on cooperation with 6
clinical hospitals.

As far as Programs in the English language are concerned, the University
admits students to the following Programs:
1. 4-year M.D. Program – since 1993
2. 6-year M.D. Program – since 1995
3. 5-year D.D.S. Program – since 2001
4. 5-year M.Sc. Pharmacy Program – since 2004
5. 6-year Pharm. D. Program – since 2009

University staff
The total number of academic teachers employed in Medical Faculties
I and II which conduct medical studies in Polish and English language
amounts to 750.
Among them there are: 104 professors, 115 assistant professors, 139
adjuncts, 181 assistants with PhD degree, 117 assistants without PhD
degree, 83 senior lecturers, 10 lecturers and 1 instructor.
Most of them (565 persons) are medical doctors, 94 persons represent
sciences, 91 are dentists (Medical Faculty II includes the Department of
Dentistry).
They have scientific degrees of philosophy doctor, doctor habilitatus or
scientific titles of professor in medicine or dentistry.
International cooperation
The University continuously seeks to develop learning process and teaching techniques. Therefore, it broadens the cooperation with foreign institutions and universities in terms of joint research, joint participation
in international programs and research projects as well as in joint publications and scientific conferences, exchange of students and teachers.
PUMS cooperates with many foreign institutions from the whole world,
including Universities in Rennes and Nancy (France), Berlin, Halle, Kiel,
Nürnberg, Mainz, Munchen Regensburg (Germany), Linkoping (Sweden),
Oslo University College and Agder University College (Norway), Perugia
(Italy), University of Illinois in Chicago, Indiana University in Bloomington,
Widener University, Chester Pennsylvania and University of Pennsylvania
(USA), The University of Edinburgh (United Kingdom).
Competency based curriculum
Poznan University of Medical Sciences began the careful planning of an exciting
new medical curriculum, a competency based curriculum. In this curriculum,
students are given specific subject matter and clinical objectives and outcomes
by the faculty. Consequently, expectations and evaluations for students both in
the basic sciences and in the clinics are made very clear. In addition, students will
be instructed in communication skills, professionalism, interpretation and use of
the scientific literature, diagnostic and treatment skills, rapport building with patients, sensitivity to moral, ethical, cultural, and social issues and life-long learning skills. Students will also receive training in problem based learning through
extensive use of clinical vignettes in their basic sciences. The implementation of
this curriculum, to be put into place in the near future, will make our Medical
School a unique institution for students looking for a strong academic program
where academic and clinical expectations are clearly defined. Such a curriculum
will greatly increase the value of the degree at Poznan University of Medical Sciences and facilitate good residency placement.
Accreditation
The University is widely recognized around the world. English language programs are accredited, among other institutions, by the Polish Ministry of
Health (Department of Science and Higher Education), the US Department of
Education, Educational Commission on Foreign Medical Graduates (ECFMG),
National Board of Medical Examiners, loan institutions in USA, Canada and
Scandinavia. Last year our English language programs were granted accreditation by the Medical Board of California (July 2008).
Graduates around the world
Many University staff members serve on the boards of professional and scientific associations and are invited to act as advisers by the WHO and IAEA.
MD and PhD degrees awarded at the University enjoy wide international recognition. At present more than 1200 graduates of the University practice or
research abroad. Many of them are outstanding clinical specialists and heads
of hospital departments in Europe, North America, South Africa and elsewhere. In 2008 a team led by dr Maria Siemionow, a graduate and professor
of surgery of Poznan University of Medical Sciences, performed a landmark
face transplant in Cleveland Clinic, USA.
Alumni Association
Inauguration of Alumni Association of English Programs’ graduates took place
in May 2007 during a special dinner organized to celebrate the 10th graduating class of English Programs.
In April 2009 a solemn meeting of the University’s Alumni was held in the
Polish Embassy in Washington D.C. At this meeting the authorities of PUMS
presented a proposal of setting up the Alumni Association in the U.S with the
following goals:
• sustaining contact with the University
• opening possibilities for further scientific cooperation and professional development of Alumni
• establishing contacts of Alumni with our students and supporting the
ablest of them.
More information on the Association’s activities will be available at the University
website at www.pums.ump.edu.pl (under section: Information for Graduates).
