Borecka, January 2014 Historical Note: The formation of the criminal police (Kriminalpolizei‐Kripo) in Łódź began in November and December 1939 and finished in early 1940 with Heinrich Himmler’s circular letter of February 8, 1940 which established the network of offices of criminal police for the Wartheland. The police office in Łódź comprised the entire territory of the regency. It supervised 7 posts in: Kalisz, Kępno,Ostrów Wielkopolski, Ozorków, Turek, Wieluń and Zduńska Wolaince, and in Feb. 1, 1941, a post in Sieradz, and then in Zgierz. In May 1940, the special Kripo station was established in the ghetto. Thanks to a network of Jewish confidential agents it inquired about the attitudes of the community and gathered information about valuables that could be found in the ghetto area. The Kripo also dealt with capturing escaped POWs, fugitives from forced labor in Germany and Poles who committed offences against the economy under the occupation. Kripo closely collaborated with the Gestapo. Scope and Content of Collection Contains records relating to organization of the Staatliche Kriminalpolizei Kriminalpolizeistelle Litzmannstadt (Kripo), includes also personal files of officers, reports of crimes in Łódź and its regency, materials concerning police activity in the ghetto, such as: crossing boundaries, confiscation of property, reports concerning murders and suicides in the ghetto, records and statistics concerning the migration of people, daily reports of der Aelteste der Juden Litzmannstadt, the records of arrested/detained Jews and books of record and inspection, as well as ordinances and announcements of the occupation authorities. 2 http://collections.ushmm.org
