May 1, 2016 Sixth Sunday of Easter Memories of the Future The Future is as Bright as the Promises of God St. John Brebeuf Parish 8307 N. Harlem Ave., Niles, IL 60714 847-966-8145 www.sjbrebeuf.org Page 1 Page 2 Sixth Sunday of Easter May 1, 2016 Dear Parishioners, Charity and respect are central to the Easter message of Christ. Paradoxically, the more we encounter anger, hatred, disrespect, demonizing, name-calling, refusals for a real conversation, and spoken and unspoken threats, the more we are called to bear down on the Christian essentials—the more we are pushed to our limit, the more we are called to respectfullness, graciousness, openness, and to offer true and mutual conversation. True prayer and a true Christian behavior must be rooted in respect, graciousness, and love. Father Mike Meany READINGS FOR MAY 7 First Reading — Jesus tells the disciples that they will be witnesses to the ends of the earth (Acts 1:1-11). Psalm — God mounts his throne to shouts of joy: a blare of trumpets for the Lord (Psalm 47). Second Reading — God seated Jesus at his right hand in the heavens (Ephesians 1:17-23) or Hebrews 9:2428; 10:19-23. Gospel — As Jesus blessed his disciples he parted from them and was taken up to heaven (Luke 24:46-53). PERPETUAL EUCHARISTIC ADORATION Christ's followers were skeptical when He preached the reality of His Body and Blood as food and drink. St. John said, "many of His disciples withdrew and no longer went about with Him." Seeing this, Jesus asked the Twelve, "Do you also want to leave me?" Simon Peter did not understand any more than those who left Christ, but his loyalty was more firm. "Lord," he said, "to whom shall we go? You have the words of eternal life." We have the "Word of Eternal Life" right here with us day and night in our Adoration Chapel. Do you have something you want to ask Him? There are several hours needing adorers. Please pick one for your personal hour with Him. May 1, 2016 Sixth Sunday of Easter Page 7 The Ministry of Sacristan Consider becoming a Sacristan at St. John Brebeuf. This ministry is crucial to the daily functioning of the church, and today we have a special need for sacristans for the funeral masses held on weekdays and Saturdays. You might consider working in pairs with another sacristan to make the time more fun. What does the Sacristan do? Many things need to be done before liturgy can take place. Bread and wine must be in place, vessels and vestments available, books set out and candles lit, guiding the younger altar servers into place, occasionally reading from Scripture. The ordained ministers often do some of this work, but sometimes they need an extra hand. Don’t worry you won’t need to take care of everything: the lectors, altar servers, ushers and Eucharistic ministers have responsibilities for making ready the materials that they themselves use. We invite you to consider this ministry of holy duties, serving the liturgy and serving the entire community. Call the office and ask for Barbara or leave your phone number. Page 12 Sixth Sunday of Easter May 1, 2016 Drodzy Parafianie, Dobroczynność i szacunek leżą w centrum Wielkanocnego przeslania Chrystusa. Paradoksalnie, im bardziej doświadczamy gniewu, nienawiści, braku szacunku, strachu, wyzwisk, odmowy prawdziwej rozmowy oraz wypowiedzianych i niewypowiedzianych zagrożeń, tym bardziej jesteśmy wezwani do zakorzenienia się w wartościach chrześcijańskich. Im bardziej jesteśmy zepchnięci na granicę naszej wytrzymałości, tym bardziej jesteśmy powołani do przestrzegania, wdzięczności, otwartości i gotowości do prawdziwej i wzajemnej rozmowy. Prawdziwa modlitwa i prawdziwy chrześcijanin muszą być zakorzenione w szacunku, łaskawości i miłości. Ks.
