Festiwal The Artists stanowi podsumowanie najważniejszych projektów dźwiękowych i muzycznych artystów sztuk wizualnych w Polsce w ciągu ostatnich kilku lat.
Wezmą w nim udział twórcy, dla których praca z dźwiękiem jest stałym i nieodłącznym
elementem praktyki artystycznej, o poważnym, na skalę międzynarodową, dorobku
kompozytorskim, koncertowym i wydawniczym w dziedzinie muzyki współczesnej
i eksperymentalnej, jak również ci, dla których działalność muzyczna stanowi odrębne
pole poszukiwań i eksperymentów i nie jest ściśle związana z twórczością wizualną.
Fascynacja wielu artystów sztuk wizualnych muzyką i ich zaangażowanie w projekty
dźwiękowe wiąże się również ze szczególnym podejściem do występowania na scenie,
które traktowane jest jak swego rodzaju performans – rytuały i charakterystyczne
gesty muzyków stają się punktem wyjścia do tworzenia własnej scenicznej choreografii. Wśród projektów prezentowanych w ramach festiwalu znajdą się te wykorzystujące zabawę konwencjami, niejednokrotnie ocierające się o teatralizację (kostiumy,
wcielanie się w role), ale także minimalistyczne, wyrafinowane dźwiękowo prezentacje, w których ważnym elementem staje się warstwa tekstowa traktowana na równi
z dźwiękiem.
Wprowadzanie rozróżnienia na sztuki wizualne, performans czy muzykę staje się
coraz bardziej sztuczne, a w wielu przypadkach wręcz niemożliwe. Festiwal The Artists
rozmywa te granice, a kuratorzy świadomie i celowo operują narzędziami używanymi
przy organizacji wydarzeń i festiwali muzycznych. Tytuł wydarzenia nawiązuje do rozpowszechnionej praktyki umieszczania w nazwie zespołów muzycznych anglojęzycznego
rodzajnika określonego „the” – The Doors, The Beatles, The Cars, The Strokes — i ma
nasuwać skojarzenia z gwiazdorskim światem muzyki rozrywkowej i rządzącymi nim
mechanizmami.

The festival The Artists is a summation of the most important sound and music projects of visual
artists in Poland of recent years. It will bring together artists for whom work in sound is a constant
and integral part of their artistic practice, those who have impressive compositional, concert and
publishing achievements in the field of contemporary and experimental music on an international
scale, and those for whom musical activity is a separate field of exploration and experimentation and
is not tightly connected with the visual arts. For many visual artists, their fascination and engagement with music and sound projects is also connected with a particular approach to performing
on stage. Indeed, they treat this as a kind of performance whereby the rituals and characteristic
gestures of music become a point of departure for the creation of one’s own stage choreography.
Amongst the projects presented at the festival will be those that play with conventions, often fringing upon theatricality (costumes, playing a role), but also minimalist, sophisticated sound presentations, in which the lyrics are an important element treated on a par with sound.
The distinction between visual art, performance and music becomes more and more artificial, and in
many cases impossible. The festival The Artists washes away such boundaries, and the curators consciously and intentionally employ the tools used in the organisation of events and musical festivals,
and not modern art exhibitions.
The title of the festival refers to the widespread practice of music groups naming themselves with
the English-language definite article ‘the’ – The Doors, The Beatles, The Cars, The Strokes – and suggests an association with the star-studded world of pop-music and the mechanisms governing it.

Formed in 2009, GÓWNO’s music is defined as rodeo punk. The group ascribes to itself the
role of pioneers of this genre. Looking for reference in other, more popular current music, the
work can be characterised as a fusion of country, punk, black metal and noise.
A majority of the members of GÓWNO are graduates of the Academy of Fine Arts in Gdańsk
and as the group themselves writes: ‘there is an unquestionable connection between the
“visual arts” and the sounds which GÓWNO emits. Thus, a consideration of the creativity of
the group in the categories of sound alone does not fully convey what GÓWNO is.’
Zespół powstał w 2009 roku. Wykonywana przez nich muzyka określana jest jako rodeo
punk, a zespół przypisuje sobie rolę pioniera tego gatunku. Jeśli poszukamy odniesień w innych, bardziej popularnych nurtach muzycznych, można określić to jako fuzję country, punka, black metalu i noise’u. Członkowie GÓWNA są w większości absolwentami Akademii
Sztuk Pięknych w Gdańsku i jak sami o sobie piszą: „niewątpliwe istnieje połączenie między
»sztukami plastycznymi« i dźwiękami, które GÓWNO wydaje. Rozpatrywanie twórczości zespołu jedynie w kategoriach dźwiękowych nie oddaje więc w pełni tego, czym GÓWNO jest”.

KASHANTI is the musical embodiment of the group szu szu. They sing and play experimental shanties about life and art. To-date, KASHANTI has released two records (Kashanti and
Sailors) and performed in such locations as Bergen (Norway), Graz (Austria), Berlin, Warsaw
and Poznań. The group performed their debut concert in Norway in 2008. Each concert is an
independent performance, where the music is just as important as the stage show.
KASHANTI to muzyczne wcielenie grupy szu szu. Śpiewają i grają eksperymentalne szanty
o życiu i sztuce. Kashanti wydali dotychczas dwie płyty (Kashanti i Sailors), występowali
m.in. w Bergen, Grazu, Berlinie, Warszawie, Poznaniu. Grupa zadebiutowała koncertem w
Norwegii w 2008 roku. Każdy ich występ to niezależny performans, w którym muzyka jest
równie ważna, co sceniczny show.

GALACTICS is a group that has been active since the start of 2007. The leader of the group
is Rafał Dominik, a visual artist and representative of the category polo-dance. This new
style on the Polish light-entertainment music scene joins the sensitivity of disco-polo
with the dynamism of dance music. The members of the group previously referred to this
category as progressive or modern disco-polo. Within the framework of the festival The
Artists, the audience will hear songs from the group’s new repertoire, as well as hits like
Friends or Acapulco.
GALACTICS to zespół działający od początku 2007 roku. Liderem grupy jest Rafał Dominik, artysta sztuk wizualnych oraz przedstawiciel gatunku polo dance. To nowy styl na
polskiej scenie muzyki rozrywkowej łączący wrażliwość disco polo z przytupem muzyki
dance. Sami członkowie zespołu określali wcześniej ten gatunek mianem progresywnego
lub modern disco polo. Zagrają piosenki z nowego repertuaru, jak również takie hity jak
Przyjaciele czy Akapulko.

CIPEDRAPSKUAD is a legendary hip-hop group formed in 2012 by Dominika (voice),
Maryja (voice) and dj Efekt Dziada (music). Their eclectic style combines brutal rap and
boorish glamour with the luminous anger of the streets. Their apparently vulgar lyrics
have a pure and timeless message. Without pretence or fuss, CIPEDRAPSKUAD reveals
the true face of people, their fears and desires. It is the music of the future.
CIPEDRAPSKUAD to legendarna grupa hiphopowa utworzona w 2012 roku przez Dominikę
(głos), Maryję (głos) i dj-a Efekt Dziada (muzyka). Ich eklektyczny styl łączy w sobie brutalny rap i chamski glamour ze świetlistym gniewem ulicy. Z pozoru wulgarne teksty, mają
czysty ponadczasowy przekaz. Bez udawania i ceregieli odsłaniają prawdziwe oblicza ludzi,
ich lęki i żądze. To muzyka przyszłości.

The group consists of three artists from Cracow. The musicians use percussion and four
synthesizers. The group improvises, drawing on excerpts from contemporary and popular
music of the 20th and 21st centuries. If we wanted to classify the group’s work as a particular genre it would be Cosmic Rock.

Visual artist and photographer Tomek Saciłowski is also member and founder of the
group RANO that performs in unexpected public spaces. During the concert, Saciłowski
(aka SAC-T) will play together with Bobi Peru (Maciej Sinkowski), a musician, composer
and music producer. Saciłowski focuses mainly on lyrics, poetry and rap. The duet with
Bobi will present a set of works of pop, hip-hop, and electro-punk enriched with perverse,
melancholic lyrics.
Tomek Saciłowski, artysta sztuk wizualnych, fotograf, to założyciel i członek zespołu
RANO występującego w nieoczekiwanych miejscach w przestrzeni publicznej. Podczas
koncertu Saciłowski (aka SAC-T) zagra wspólnie z Bobim Peru (Maciej Sinkowski), muzykiem, kompozytorem i producentem muzycznym. Saciłowski skupia się głównie na tekście, poezji, rapie. W duecie z Bobim zaprezentuje zestaw utworów popowych, hiphopowych i elektropunkowych, wzbogaconych o przewrotne, melancholijne teksty.

Anna Zaradny is a visual artist, composer and improviser. In music, she is interested
in improvised acoustic music in a minimalist contemporary idiom, and compositionally and structurally complex experimental electronic forms. She creates visual works in
the forms of installations, objects, photography and video. She has presented projects in
major international instutions and at various Festivals. Her discography encompasses
solo recordings and projects in collaboration with such artists as: Burkhard Stangl, Tony
Buck, Robert Piotrowicz and Cor Fuhler. She is the author of music for theatre performances, multimedia projects and radio drama. She is also the co-founder and curator of
the Musica Genera Festival. She is the winner of the public’s award of the Deutsche Bank
Foundation Award – Views 2011.
Anna Zaradny to artystka sztuk wizualnych, kompozytorka, improwizatorka. Interesuje
ją akustyczna muzyka improwizowana o minimalistycznym, współczesnym idiomie oraz
złożone strukturalnie i kompozycyjnie elektroniczne formy eksperymentalne. Prace wizualne tworzy w formie instalacji, obiektu, fotografii i wideo. Realizuje projekty dla licznych międzynarodowych instytucji i festiwali. Jej dyskografia obejmuje nagrania solowe
i projekty z m.in. Burkhardem Stanglem, Tony’m Buck’iem, Robertem Piotrowiczem, Corem Fuhlerem. Jest autorką muzyki do spektakli teatralnych, projektów multimedialnych
i słuchowisk. Współtwórczyni i kuratorka Musica Genera Festival. Laureatka nagrody
publiczności w konkursie Nagroda Fundacji Deutsche Bank – Spojrzenia 2011.

Bosacki / Dys
Piotr Bosacki lives and works in Poznań. He works in visual arts, animated film and music composition. He works in the Intermedia Department of the Academy of Fine Arts in
Poznań. He is a co-creator of the artistic group PENERSTWO, and a member of the group
KOT. He works together with Studio Gallery. He creates kinetic objects, as well as films
made with a self-created animation technique. At the festival The Artists, his own composition Exercises from Counterpoint will be presented by Krzysztof Dys – a pianist of the
young generation, Dys is currently a teaching assistant in a piano class at the Academy
of Music in Poznań. On a regular basis, he plays in the jazz band Soundcheck. He has
worked together with, amongst others, Jerzy Milian, Mikołaj Trzaska, and Wacław Zimpel.
Piotr Bosacki mieszka i pracuje w Poznaniu. Zajmuje się sztukami wizualnymi, filmem
animowanym i kompozycją muzyczną. Pracuje w Katedrze Intermediów Akademii Sztuk
Pięknych w Poznaniu. Współtworzył grupę artystyczną PENERSTWO, był członkiem grupy KOT. Współpracuje z Galerią Stereo. Tworzy obiekty kinetyczne oraz filmy realizowane
autorską techniką animacji. Na festiwalu The Artists jego kompozycję Ćwiczenia z kontrapunktu zaprezentuje Krzysztof Dys – pianista młodego pokolenia, asystent w klasie fortepianu w Akademii Muzycznej w Poznaniu, na stałe grający w jazzowym zespole
SOUND­CHECK. Współpracował on m.in. z Jerzym Milianem, Mikołajem Trzaską, Wacławem Zimplem.

Wojciech Bąkowski is the author of animated films and videos, audio works, installations, audio performances and radio drama, and is also a musician and poet. Bąkowski is
the leader of the music groups KOT, NIWEA and CZYKITA, and co-founder of the artistic
group PENERSTWO. He is the winner of the Deutsche Bank Foundation Award – Views
2009, and recipient of the Polityka Passport award in 2010. On 28th June, along with
Dawid Szczęsny, he will perform as support for the legendary group KRAFTWERK.
Wojciech Bąkowski to autor filmów animowanych i wideo, obiektów i instalacji audio, audioperformansów, słuchowisk radiowych, także muzyk i poeta. Lider grup muzycznych KOT,
NIWEA i CZYKITA. Współtworzył grupę artystyczną PENERSTWO. Laureat Nagrody Fundacji Deutsche Bank Spojrzenia 2009 oraz Paszportu Polityki w 2010 roku. 28 czerwca wraz
z Dawidem Szczęsnym wystąpią jako suport przed legendarną grupą KRAFTWERK.

×0 is the first ever presentation of the new sound project by Konrad Smoleński and Adam
Witkowski, working for the first time as a single team. The duo focuses on concepts of:
electricity, periodicity, and space. To the palette of sounds emerging as a result of feedback, the stimulation of speakers by electric current and simple synthesis, the artists add
naturally generated sound effects as well as simple instrumentation.
Konrad Smoleński is a multimedia artist, member of the artistic group PENERSTWO
and the groups BNNT, KRISTEN, KOT, MAMA, SIXA and is a PINKPUNK scene animator. He works in different medias: photography, video, installation, objects, projections,
typography and actions. In particular, he works with sound and the way in which it is
processed. Smoleński is a winner of the Deutsche Bank Foundation Award – Views 2011.
He is representing Poland at the 55th International Art Exhibition in Venice.
Adam Witkowski works with visual art as well as sound and music (radio projects,
theatre music, film music, field recordings). He lectures in the Audio Basics Studio of
the Academy of Fine Arts in Gdańsk. He is known as a member of the groups: GÓWNO,
SAMORZĄDOWCY and LANGFURTKA with Mikołaj Trzaska. Witkowski is curator and
producer of the sound projects IT’S NOT THAT TUNE (Gdańsk), RADIO COPERNICUS
(Berlin), and RADIO SIMULATOR (Warsaw).
