About Gdańsk
Gdańsk is one of the most
spectacular, “not to be missed” cities
of Poland. Together with neighboring
Sopot and Gdynia, they form the socalled Tricity – a large metropolis,
which is one of the largest tourist
attractions in Poland. The city of
Gdańsk, a classic example of a
Hanseatic town, which several times
witnessed crucial moments during
world history - it is here where the
Second World War started, and where
the Solidarity movement sprang, which
led to the fall of Communism.
The conference events will take place
in the most significant areas of
Gdańsk. Some of the meetings will
take place in the Maritime Culture
Centre, which is located just next to
one of the symbols of Gdańsk - the
th
crane, which was built in the 15
century. In the middle Ages it was the largest port crane in Europe, able to lift even 4 tones. It is located near
St. Mary’s street – one of the most visited and enchanting streets of Gdańsk. The street full of amazing
Hanseatic and medieval buildings, leads to St. Mary's Basilica, which is said to be the largest brick church in
the world. The parallel street – Długi Targ – is called the Royal Route and is said to be the most beautiful
street of Gdańsk.
The root of Solidarity – the movement which played the major role in the fall of communism – was in the
Shipyard located in Gdańsk. Now, in that very special place, one can see the Monument to the Fallen
Shipyard Workers of 1970 and visit the European Solidarity Centre, which is located just by the former
entrance to the shipyard and which is the main venue of the Conference.
On 17.09 at 15.30 all conference attendees are invited for guided tour through Gdańsk Old Town.
Please note, that number of places for a tour is limited. For those interested in the excursion it is
highly recommended to select this option in the registration form.
Conference venue: European Centre of Solidarity (ESC)
Address: Plac Solidarności 1, Gdańsk
www: http://www.ecs.gda.pl/title,Jezyk,pid,21,lang,2.html
The ESC is a state-of-the-art cultural institution that honors our greatest civic success—the victorious
Solidarity movement. It is a museum that commemorates the revolution of Solidarity and the fall of
communism in Europe, but it is also an educational, research and academic centre, an archive, library and
multimedia library. Last but not least, it is a public meeting space for citizens who feel responsible for the
development of democracy: a place where solidarity and citizenship are put into practice.
On 16.09 at 17.30 and on 17.09 at 15.30 all conference attendees are invited for a guided tour
through European Solidarity Centre. Please note, that number of places for each tour is limited. For
those interested in the excursion it is highly recommended to select this option in the registration
form.

Working meetings venue: Maritime Culture Centre (MCC)
Address: ul. Tokarska 21/25, Gdańsk
www.: http://www.en.nmm.pl/maritime-culture-centre
Opened in April 2012, the Maritime
Culture Centre (MCC) is the newest
department
of
National
Maritime
Museum. It is also one of the most
modern museums in Poland and is the
only
museum
which
promotes
information on maritime subject in a
comprehensive and interactive way by
employing
multimedia
techniques.
Despite its modern architecture which
draws attention by its partially glass walls
and roof, the building alludes to the
historic architecture of Gdańsk.
The Centre’s great asset is its location on
the riverbank of the Motława River – on
the way of the most popular sightseeing
tours of the Old Town. It is adjacent to a
brick tower of the Crane and stretches
along Rybackie Pobrzeże Street.
The main attraction of MCC is a permanent interactive exhibition "People-Ships-Ports". Visitors of the
Centre can also participate in a sailing regatta in order to learn how to trim the sails or to perform delicate
maneuvers on water with the use of tugs.
St John’s International Culture Centre
Welcoming concert, 15.09
Address: ul. Świętojańska 50, Gdańsk
www: http://www.nck.org.pl/en/st-johns-centre
St. John’s International Culture Centre is a place of
symbiosis between sacrum, art and culture, which
attracts both tourists and the admirers of culture and
art. Its history, architecture and unusual events which
take place there, create an unusual atmosphere.
The only church in Gdańsk that had not been
renovated since the WW2, has been revived in a very
extraordinary way - on Sunday and holidays the
church celebrates masses and is open for catholic
followers, however on the other days of the week, it
becomes a unique venue of cultural events.
On the first day of the event (15.09) at 18.30 all
participants of the Gathering re cordially invited for a
special concert “Temple of Art” organized in St.
John’s Centre in cooperation with The Baltic Sea
Cultural Centre. The concert will also be open for the
local public and the citizens of Gdańsk. On the very
same day, the exhibition of the „Baltic House” project, coordinated by the Baltic Sea Cultural Centre will
be opened in St. John’s Centre – as one of the potential flagship projects of the Policy Area Culture
(EUSBSR).
The restaurant ‘Filharmonia’
Welcoming dinner on 15.09
Address: ul. Ołowianka 1, Gdańsk
www: http://www.restauracjafilharmonia.pl/english
The restaurant ‘Filharmonia’ is located in beautiful, neo-Gothic, red
brick façade from the late nineteenth century, on the Ołowianka
Island. In 1997 the building became the property of the Baltic
Philharmonic, and was subsequently adapted to serve as a
music and congress center. The opening of the restaurant
“Filharmonia” completed this glorious work and the historic building
got back its former glory. Restaurant “Filharmonia” is a dining
space composed of two levels, each of an area of 100 m2. What is
special about its interior is a large, 120 m2 wall painting
presenting historical Gdańsk and its citizens, painted by the local
artist Paweł Domaszewicz.
Transportation from the St. John’s Cultural Centre to the
restaurant and back to hotel Hilton/Fahrenheit and Mercure
will be provided.
