COURSE SYLLABUS
ELEC 692 Fall 2010 Sep. 1, 2010 George Yuan Mixed-Signal Integrated Bio-Sensory Circuit Design COURSE SYLLABUS Course Description Biology has been a long-stand fascination of the human society. As semiconductor technologies advance, bio-medical application-specific integrated circuits have become a major trend of the industry. The course aims to systematically introduce both major issues of mixed-signal circuit designs and biological mechanisms related to existing IC designs. The course will cover state-ofart design examples of this multi-disciplinary field. This course is organized on a series of important topics in the mixed-signal and bio-medical IC field. Every class is dedicated to one topic. The class is a mixture of paper discussion and regular lectures. The first half course is dedicated to mixed-signal IC design. The course starts with 2 review classes on devices, packaging, OPAMP design, and filter design. Then, the course covers topics on noise, pipelined ADC, Sigma-delta ADC, and SAR ADC. The second half course is dedicated to sensory and bio-medical IC design. The topics include bio-potential detection, implants, DNA detection, CCD, CMOS imaging, and CT/SPECT. The course has regular paper reading assignments. The course has one design project as the final exam. After the course, students are expected to understand the fundamental concepts of mixedsignal IC designs, the current status and challenges in the design of bio-sensory mixed-signal integrated circuits, with hands-on project experience. Course Prerequisite Students must have taken Elec 304 or equivalent and must have basic skills in designing and analyzing analog integrated circuits. Students are preferred to have taken Elec504. Although extensive review will be done whenever possible, it will be assumed that students are familiar with OPAMP design, feedback, stability, filter design, and noise. It is also expected that students should have experience in Cadence. The project assignments are in Cadence. Reference Books 1. D. Johns, and K.
