ARE THINGS GETTING YOU DOWN? WRITE A LETTER TO JPII!
For many people the Winter season can be a depressing time. A number of factors contribute to this
phenomenon including something as natural as a lack of sufficient sunshine! Many people are forced into
hibernation, unable to deal with the bad weather and treacherous walking or driving conditions. Perhaps your
problems are more serious. Perhaps you are in poor health. Perhaps you just don’t have the desire to live any
longer. Perhaps your depression is severe.
This Thursday evening we will have yet another Mass for the beatification of John Paul II. At each of
those ‘third Thursday’ Masses we place the basket of private petitions in front of the altar as our prayer for the
late holy father’s intercession. NOBODY EVER READS THESE PETITIONS—they remain absolutely private. The basket is
getting so full that, in time, we’ll have to get a bigger one. The little blue sheets of paper to the right of the mitre shrine are there for
you to write down your concerns and petitions for John Paul II to present to God and to his mother as he kneels before them in
prayer. You don’t even have to sign your name...he’ll know who the ‘sender’ is.
Have you ever submitted a written request to John Paul II for his intercession? Perhaps you are not able to attend the ‘third
Thursday’ evening Mass, but you are welcomed to place a note into the mitre shrine at any time! If you can never make it to church,
why not mail in a request? Simply address it to the Shrine Church of St. Stanislaus and on the bottom of the envelope place
“Attention: JPII”...We’ll put it into the basket with the rest of the petitions. We’ll never open the envelope—the contents will
remain between the two of you.
Perhaps you will feel the need to write an entire letter! Why not? It may be a way of helping you connect with John Paul in a
very special way. Tell him how sad you are. Tell him about your pain. Tell him about your weak faith, your doubts, your concerns.
He’s there to listen to YOU! He’s there to help YOU! Tell him if you don’t feel like living! Tell him if you feel unwanted! Tell him
if you feel useless! Tell him if you feel abandoned by your family and friends! Tell him whatever is troubling you even if you have
to wipe off the tears from the paper on which you are trying to write this letter. Tell him how frightened you are! Tell him how
confused you are! Tell him how hurt you are! Ask him to help! Don’t be afraid to cry if you feel forsaken! Even Jesus endured these
feelings (remember his final days before his betrayal , death and resurrection?) Loneliness was a part of the life of Jesus and it was a
part of the life of John Paul! That it is a part of your life makes you no different but, rather, connects you to them both. You can be
surrounded by people and still be lonely. But, even in your loneliness, you need not be alone. He is open to be your intercessor and
he wants to be your friend. Let him help. Write to him and open your heart to him. He’ll try his best to make your burden less heavy,
your cross just a little lighter. Write John Paul a letter….and give him the chance to help.

THE EUCHARIST — PART
III
The Eucharist is not like the
other food; it is different. If you
receive the regular food, you
assimilate it; it becomes a part
of your body. With the Eucharist
is the other way around. You
don’t change Christ in the
Eucharist into yourselves; it is
He who transforms you into
Himself – you become Christ-like.
Once again allow me to allude to an occasion with
Pope John Paul II. My mother had never had the
chance to go back to Italy after she had come to
America, but had intended to do so with my father.
Before the trip could happen, he died. So I invited my
mother along on one of my visits to Rome. Of course,
we participated in the general audience which was
regularly held at the Vatican each Wednesday during
which time the Holy Father would greet thousands of
pilgrims. I was seated with the bishops near the Holy
Father while my mother had to sit off to the side with
some other dignitaries.
When it was my turn to personally approach John
Paul II, I mentioned to him that I had brought my
mother along for that trip. He immediately asked me
where she was! I pointed out where she was seated off
quite a distance along with the diplomatic corps. The
Holy Father immediately got up from his seat and made
me take him over to meet my mother! After he gently
embraced her the Holy Father told me how extremely
fortunate I was to be able to have a mother as he had
lost his own mother at a very early age. My mother was
so happy. He was the type of person who, even having
the worries of the entire world on his mind, would take
the time out to go to visit one person to make her
happy. What a great man!
My brothers and sisters, like Christ, the Eucharist is
not an occasion for self-satisfaction. You, like Christ,
are chosen and blessed and broken and given to a
whole little world for its life. At each Mass, in this
Supper, all of you, priestly people that you are, offer
with the celebrant, the body of Christ – and on the
same paten you offer yourselves. For you no longer
belong to yourselves. The profound meaning of your
common Christian priesthood lies in this: You are
“given” – given to others for their life. God changes
into Christ not only bread and wine; He changes you
into Christ – for the life of the world.

Biskup Pilla o Eucharystii (3)
Eucharystia nie jest pokarmem jak inne pokarmy;
różnica jest zasadnicza. Kiedy przyjmujemy
zwyczajny pokarm, jak czynimy to codziennie w
naszych domach, asymilujemy go, czyli przetwarzamy
go w nasze ciało i energię. Z Eucharystią jest
dokładnie odwrotnie: nie zmieniamy Chrystusa w
siebie, ale to On przemienia nas w Siebie i dzięki
Eucharystii stajemy się podobni do Niego.
Jeszcze raz proszę pozwolić, że nawiążę do
spotkania z Janem Pawłem II. Mojej mamie nigdy nie
było dane powrócić do Włoch po tym, jak
wyemigrowała do USA, ale zamierzała uczynić to
razem z moim ojcem. Niestety, zanim podróż doszła
do skutku, mój tato zmarł. Wiedząc o tym zaprosiłem
moją mamę, aby udała się wraz ze mną w czasie
jednej z podróży do Rzymu. Oczywiście
uczestniczyliśmy w audiencji generalnej, które w
Watykanie mają miejsce w każdą środę, podczas
których Ojciec św. pozdrawia tysiące pielgrzymów.
Siedziałem wraz z innymi biskupami w pobliżu Ojca
św., podczas gdy moja mama siedziała z boku wraz z
innymi dygnitarzami. Kiedy przyszła kolej na mnie,
aby podejść do Ojca św., wspomniałem, że jest ze
mną także moja mama. On zaraz zapytał: „Gdzie?”
Wskazałem na miejsce, gdzie siedziała, a było to nie
tak blisko, razem z przedstawicielami
dyplomatycznymi. Ojciec św. nie zwlekając wstał i
kazał mi się zaprowadzić do niej! Po delikatnym
przytuleniu mojej mamy do siebie, powiedział mi, jak
bardzo jestem szczęśliwy, że mam ją, ponieważ on
stracił swoją we wczesnym dzieciństwie. Moja mama
była bardzo szczęśliwa. On był tego rodzaju
człowiekiem, który, chociaż dźwigał na swoich
barkach troskę o cały świat, to jednak znalazł czas,
aby spotkać się z jedną osobą, aby uczynić ją
szczęśliwą. Co za wielki człowiek!
Bracia i siostry! Jak Chrystus, Eucharystia nie jest
okazją dla samozadowolenia. Tak jak On, jesteście
wybrani i pobłogosławieni i połamani i dani dla życia
całemu małemu światu. W czasie każdej Mszy św., w
tej pamiątce Ostatniej Wieczerzy, wy wszyscy, jako
kapłański lud, razem z celebrantem ofiarujecie Ciało
Chrystusa - i na tej samej patenie - ofiarujecie również
samych siebie. Bo nie należycie już do siebie samych.
Głębokie znaczenie powszechnego kapłaństwa
chrześcijan leży w tym: Jesteście „dani” - dani innym
dla ich życia, tzn. abyście wnieśli życie w ich życie.
Pan Bóg zmienia w Chrystusa nie tylko chleb i wino;
On zmienia was w Chrystusa - dla życia świata.

KONCERT DLA OJCZYZNY
program poetycko-muzyczny
Last Saturday we hosted the ‘Fatherland Concert’ honoring
those who perished at Katyń. Featured performers included
Jarosław Golembiewski (pianist and composer) and Stanisław
Malec (actor), both from Chicago, as well as Zosia Prochoroff
(violinist) and David Krakowski (organist) from the Shrine
Church of St. Stanislaus. Despite the additional six inches of
snow which fell that evening the audience was considerable.
The concert was the final part of an event organized around
a symposium held at CWRU concerning the Katyń catastrophe
with specialists from around the world participating.

PASTORAL VISITS
The friars of the parish are always ready and happy to visit
parishioners while they are in the hospital, residing in a nursing
home or rehab center, or confined to their homes. We already
have a large list of people we visit on a regular basis. However,
sometimes there are people who would like a visit, but nobody
contacts the rectory to let us know. Please remember:
Hospitals are not allowed to tell us who is there as a patient.
If you have a family member or friend who would like to be
visited by one of the friars, either in the hospital, nursing home,
or their own home, please call the rectory.

WIZYTY DUSZPASTERSKIE W SZPITALACH
Bracia pracujący przy parafii zawsze są gotowi i chętnie
odwiedzają parafian, gdy są w szpitalu lub przebywają w domu
opieki lub ośrodku rehabilitacyjnym, czy też nie wychodzą z
domów. Mamy już długą listę osób, które odwiedzamy
regularnie. Czasami jednak są ludzie, którzy chcieliby
odwiedzin, ale nikt nie przekazuje nam informacji o tym. Proszę
pamiętać: Szpitale nie mogą powiadamiać nas, kto jest tam
jako pacjent. Jeśli masz członka rodziny lub znajomego, którzy
chcieliby być odwiedzani przez jednego z braci, czy to w
szpitalu, w domu opieki lub domu własnym, proszę dzwonić na
plebanie.
ST. STANS HISTORICAL FACT by Rob Jagelewski.
Bishop Richard Gilmour, the second Bishop of the Diocese
of Cleveland and the bishop who formed our community in
1873, was very interested in church music. Bishop Gilmour
made strenuous efforts to have music studied, especially sacred
music, taught in the parish schools. The music often heard in
churches at that time bordered on operatic and was far from
devotional. It was not unusual to have a string band in the choir
playing hymns to the tune of “Home Sweet Home.” Bishop
Gilmour issued official diocesan regulations for music which
included Gregorian and Cecilian chant. These and other
regulations went into effect in 1888.

With the upcoming May 3rd parade, Grace Hryniewicz is
looking for professional and non-professional Polish artists
such as painters, sculptors and photographers as well as
collectors and folk handicraft makers. If you know of anyone
who fits that description, whether in Cleveland or somewhere
further, we would like to talk to you. For further information

FR. JERZY’S JUBILEE
Last Sunday we held a wonderful
celebration for Fr. George Kusy’s 25th
anniversary to the priesthood along
with 17 of his seminary classmates
from Poland. Aside from the Mass at 10
AM the parish also had a wonderful
reception at the social center, both
which were well attended despite the
inclement weather conditions!
Later in the afternoon the festivities
continued at the Polish American
Center on Lansing with a formal
banquet and afternoon of entertainment.
All in all, it was a wonderful event, a
tribute to a special man who spent
seven years of his priestly life here at
the shrine Church of St. Stanislaus.
We extend our thanks to everyone who helped with the
festivities including those who baked, who prepared the hall
and church, who sang in the choir, who helped shovel snow,
who did anything to help make our guests feel welcome.
Nobody puts on a party as we do, but this can only happen
when many people freely contribute of their time and talents!

The Transfiguration Scholarship Fund was established in
1992 following the close of Transfiguration parish. Parishioners
decided that proceeds from the sale of the transfiguration
property would be used to establish an endowment for
scholarship assistance for Catholic students to attend a Catholic
elementary school or a Catholic high school within the
Cleveland Diocese or a Catholic college anywhere. Parishes
eligible for this program are Immaculate Heart of Mary or St.
Stanislaus. For guideline information and an application, please

300! When our school enrollment reached this dream goal, the teachers wrote short responses to: Why I am glad to be part of the
Saint Stanislaus Community. Here is the response of Tammy Patti, 4th Grade teacher: “I am happy to have the opportunity to
continue to teach everyday and to help children learn. I am also glad to have a chance to work with a larger faculty and have
more chances to share ideas and strategies!”
