St. John Cantius Parish T h e C a t h o l i c C o m m u n i t y o f B r i d e s b u r g Isaiah speaks to us today of Cyrus, King of Persia, anointed by the Lord. God calls Cyrus by name and leads him in service to the Israelites. In this passage we hear that it is the Lord who gives Cyrus his title, who arms him against his enemies, and who opens doors and unbars gates before him. And God does all of this so that the people will know that "I am the Lord," and that "there is none besides me." Paul opens his letter with essentially the same notion-that in God alone we find our grace and peace. Paul also gives thanks to God on our behalf, calling to mind our work of faith, hope, and love. And in the familiar Gospel reading, Jesus tells the Pharisees to give to Caesar what is Caesar's and to God what is God's. Heads or tails? There are two sides to every coin, and often we utilize this fact to decide the outcome of things. A coin toss determines who kicks off and receives in a football game, of course, but there are undoubtedly other occasions when we flip a coin--literally or figuratively-to decide a course of action. The implication is that while there are two sides, only one side is important. HEADS AND TAILS . . . We don't know what was on the flip side of the coin with Caesar's image, but it probably didn't say "In God We Trust." Jesus' antagonists phrased their question about the lawfulness of paying taxes to Caesar in such a way as to prompt a simple yes or no answer. And for Jesus, neither of these answers would have been good. So he foils them at their own game, telling the Pharisees and the Herodians to give both Caesar and God their due, and thus recognizing the importance of both earthly work and heavenly pursuits. Gotcha! We are all called to some earthly work or vocation. Whether it is a vocation in the clerical sense, the industrial or career sense, or in the sense of being single, married, or part of a family, it is incumbent upon us all to give the work its due. And as we do so, may we never forget that just as the Lord led Cyrus by the hand, so God leads us. In referring to our work of faith, Paul echoes the essence of Jesus' response to those that challenged him: in our earthly work, there, also, is God. Ben Franklin once wrote that nothing is certain but death and taxes. Maybe that's how Caesar saw it, too. Yet without even flipping a coin, we can tell that heads or tails don't really matter, because we know that God is part of the mix. Copyright (c) J. S. BLESSED TRINITY REGIONAL CATHOLIC SCHOOL We would like to invite you to join us for the performance of Maximilian: Saint of Auschwitz, an original one-man live drama performed by widely acclaimed actor Leonardo Defilippis of Saint Luke Productions. This professional production will be presented in Philadelphia at St. Timothy Church, on Friday, October 24 at 7:00p.m The drama poignantly illustrates the life of Polish Catholic priest Maximilian Kolbe, whose courage in the face of attacks against his faith led to his impriosonment in the Auschwitz concentration camp during World War II. He was forced into slave labor, tortured, and finally came forward to take the place of a married man, who was condemned to death by starvation. Forty-one years after the heroic act of sacrificing his life for another, he was canonized by Pope John Paul II who called him “the saint of our difficult age”. Maximilian: Saint of Auschwitz is a riveting production, featuring the polished skills of a talented actor who switches characters with a speed and believability that amazes audiences. The drama, which is being performed across the country, includes technological artistry in the form of a majestic orchestral soundtrack, professional lighting, and a video backdrop that sets the story in a historical yet relevant context. Maximilian: Saint of Auschwitz is a perfect opportunity for all Christians to come together and witness this story of St. Maximilian Kolbe and discover real heroism, especially in light of our current threats to religious liberties in the United States. We are very fortunate to have this caliber of theater right in our own communityk, and I hope that you will join us for this inspiring event. Admission to this performance is free; tickets are not required . A free will collection will be taken up that evening. 4 Kończymy nasze 40-godzinne Nabożeństwo w niedzielę, Mszą Świętą odprawianą o 16:00, oraz z procesją do ogrodu ze statuą Matki Boskiej gdzie odbędzie się błogosławieństwo. Konstanty will give the homily in Polish and Fr. Michael Bielecki will give the homily in English. We invite you to come and pray with us during this solemn time. We thank all of you who have accepted the invitation to “keep watch” with the Lord and signed the lists in the back of the Church last Sunday. The lists remain there so you can check the time or times you signed up to be in Church. There are still some time slots open for Sunday afternoon. We don’t want Jesus to be alone – even for a minute. May the Lord bless you for the time you give him to keep him company. Even if you didn’t sign the list please come and pray during these holy days in our parish. Dr. Maciej Lambert, a doctor in Bridesburg for many years, whose office was at Thompson and Orthodox Streets, died two weeks ago. His family has requested that a Memorial Mass be celebrated at St. John Cantius on Saturday, October 25th, at 10:00 AM. To all who came and supported the Carnival three weeks ago: THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU. I am most grateful to those who worked extremely hard – some for all four days. Your efforts and dedication made the Carnival a tremendous success. We hope that everyone who came had a good time. We were able to realize a profit of $ 14,887.17_because of your support and that of the entire Bridesburg community. On November 1st, All Saints Day, at the Saturday evening Vigil Mass, we will have a special service within Mass to bless the statues that were in All Saints Church and St. John Cantius Church. I have invited Bishop Robert Maginnis to be the celebrant of this Mass. After Mass, there will be a reception in the cafeteria for everyone to gather and celebrate our oneness. Please plan to be with us. All are invited. Our next big event in the parish is our Christmas Bazaar. It will take place on November 7th and 8th. The Christmas Bazaar mailing was sent out. You may drop off your raffle returns in the collection basket at Mass or place them in the rectory mail slot. We thank you in advance for your support. If everyone takes their chance books and enters into the drawing, it will help make the bazaar extremely successful. Your donations of new toys have been outstanding. There are large boxes placed at all the door entrances of the Church where you may place your donated toy. We are asking Parishioners to make Christmas Baskets for our Bazaar this year. Let’s see who can be most creative. Themes may include Sports teams, Crafts, Baby, Video Games, A night out, Moves, Heritage, (e.g., Polish, Irish, Italian), or Instant Lottery Tickets. Please bring your baskets to the rectory by November 3rd. Thank you in advance for your generosity!
