St. Stanislaus is reaching out in service to our diverse
neighborhood peoples. Please be generous in your support
of the many good works of our Parish. St. Stanislaus
depends upon the regular support of its membership and the
generosity of those who visit here. Please look upon your
financial gift or sacrifice as a way of giving praise to God
along with the many from earlier generations who have
worshiped and prayed here for over 135 years.
Mom’s Place
She lives in an area people have been known to refer to as ‘dangerous.’ Her whole family
grew up in that area in that very home, but have often decided to move away. Sometimes
they come to visit her, more frequently they decide to call or communicate in another fashion….if at all. She doesn’t have much in terms of the world but her possessions can have no
price put on them. If you visit you might get a scolding or you might get a warm embrace.
You might get a meal or you might be asked to do her a favor. She knows you as nobody else
in the world does and, in spite of everything you may have done, or everything you fail to do,
she still loves you and considers you her child. The kids sometimes give her money to keep
the place looking good….giving money is often easier to do than giving time...or oneself.
I could be talking about your own mother or I could be referring to this church or any
church in the city. As with this weekend festival, we often see people returning to the ‘mother
church’ where they were baptized to visit. The neighborhood is not what it used to be. Nothing ever is. The welcome includes open arms, some scolding, some food and some reminis cing. As with mom, then it’s all left behind while the visitors get on with other ‘important’
things in life, leaving her in the hands of God for her protection. He is often mom’s only constant companion throughout the day. He sits in His house in the tabernacle waiting for a vis itor or a favor. Maybe someone will bring some food or want to be fed. They are never turned away. Like mom, the churches
which nourished generations of her children are here in the old neighborhood as long as they can survive, even flourish.
This analogy even extends further to the world stage— to the motherland of Christianity, the Holy Land. The land which
was the birthplace of Jesus is even seeing bad times. Hardly any Christians remain within her borders. Life for Christians in Israel and Palestine can be truly difficult. Yet, there are those who remain….just like mom. In spite of the constant threat of gunfire and war, poverty and other challenging gifts, there are people who want to remain in the land we consider Holy, in the land
where Jesus was born, crucified and rose, in the land which is like no other….our earthly home. People will visit the Holy Land,
send money, help out from a distance…..just like the plight of some of our churches, and some of our moms.
What can we say or do? We can pray for the moms, our churches, the Holy Land. What else might God want of us? What
would your mom want from you? Whatever the answer, you know you are loved.

WHY WE DO
WHAT WE DO
This festival weekend we
welcome thousands of friends and
guests from several states. We
share the aromas of our kitchen, the
warmth of our embrace, the
brightness of our smiles, and a little
hop to our polkas! Thank you for
making the trip, from near or far, to
be with us this weekend.
Our parishioners have been
busy for a long time — many using vacation days from work,
others taking some extra Motrin to keep the joints from
protesting too much — to make sure that your visit is fun for
you and productive for our parish. There are many reasons why
we do what we do when we do this. We enjoy being with each
other. We are proud of our community and our mission, and
we want to
show off a
bit.
We
know
the
parish needs
the funds to
get us though
winter.
But most of all, we know
that our efforts are not finally
about pierogi and polkas, as
fun as those are. It is about the
mission we are committed to
carrying on — giving glory to
God, and serving God’s people.
Our patron, Saint
Stanislaus, gave his life for that
mission.
Saint Francis of
Assisi, whose Order celebrates
800 years this year, gave
everything of himself for the
sake of the Gospel.
Our
beloved Pope John Paul II
celebrated his first Mass in
North America here in 1969,
and his mitre stands in silent
testimony to his intercession.

Czytajac dzisiejsza Ewangelie
od razu daje sie zauwazyc, ze zdrady
malzenskie i rozwody to nie
wynalazek XX w. Byly one obecne
za czasów Pana Jezusa i wczesniej.
Pan Jezus w swoim nauczaniu
musial sie zmierzyc takze z tym
problemem. Zauwazmy, ze to
faryzeusze sprowokowali Pana do
odpowiedzi. Ewangelista odnotowal:
Faryzeusze przystapili do Jezusa i
chcac Go wystawic na próbe, pytali Go, czy wolno mezowi
oddalic zone? (Mk 10, 2).
Rabini nauczali odwolujac sie do Mojzesza, ze wolno
mezczyznie oddalic zone, jesli znajdzie w niej jakas skaze.
Bylo to powszechne nauczanie. Jednak byly rózne szkoly
interpretowania, co nalezy rozumiec przez owa „skaze”. Jedni
rabini mówili, ze to musialaby byc bardzo powazna przyczyna,
dla innych takim wystarcza jacym powodem bylo np.
przypalenie zupy przez zone, czyli praktycznie kazda, nawet
blaha przyczyna byla wystarczajaca do tego, aby dac zonie list
rozwodowy.
Rabini nauczajac o dopuszczalnosci rozwodu odwolywali
sie do nauk Mojzesza, który w Ksiedze Powtórzonego Prawa
pozwolil na rozwód, który zawsze byl oddaleniem zony przez
meza. Kobieta nie miala takiego prawa. W 24-tym rozdziale
Ksiegi Powtórzonego Prawa czytamy: Jesli mezczyzna poslubi
kobiete i zostanie jej mezem, lecz nie bedzie jej darzyl
zyczliwoscia, gdyz znalazl u niej cos odrazajacego, napisze jej
list rozwodowy, wreczy go jej, potem odesle ja od siebie. Jesli
ona wyszedlszy z jego domu, pójdzie i zostanie zona innego, a
ten drugi tez ja znienawidzi, wreczy jej list rozwodowy i usunie
ja z domu, albo jesli ten drugi maz, który ja poslubil, umrze, nie
bedzie mógl pierwszy jej maz, który ja odeslal, wziac jej
powtórnie za zone jako splugawionej. To bowiem budzi odraze
u Pana, a ty nie mozesz dopuscic do takiej nieprawosci w kraju,
który ci daje w posiadanie Pan, Bóg twój. (Pwt 24, 1-4).
Pan Jezus odpowiadajac na pytanie faryzeuszów stwierdza,
ze „na poczatku tak nie bylo”, i ze Mojzesz uczynil ta koncesje
tylko ze wzgledu na „zatwardzialosc ich serc”. Pan Jezus
odwoluje sie do tego, co bylo na poczatku, cytujac slowa z
Ksiegi Rodzaju: Lecz na poczatku stworzenia Bóg stworzyl ich
jako mezczyzne i kobiete: dlatego opusci czlowiek ojca swego i
matke i zlaczy sie ze swoja zona, i beda oboje jednym cialem. A
tak juz nie sa dwoje, lecz jedno cialo. Co wiec Bóg zlaczyl, tego
czlowiek niech nie rozdziela! (Mk 10, 6-9).
Nauka ta byla trudna do zrozumienia i przyjecia takze dla
samych Apostolów, którzy spisali slowa Pana. U sw. Mateusza
czytamy takie slowa uczniów, którzy pytali Pana, a kiedy On
odpowiedzial, ze odpowiedzieli slowami: Jesli tak ma sie
sprawa z malzenstwem, to nie warto sie zenic (por. Mt 19, 10).
Nic wiec dziwnego, ze i dzisiaj jest wielu takich, którzy
odrzucaja nauke Pana jako za trudna i niemozliwa do
zachowania. A jednak, jest to wymaganie Pana. On nigdy nie
wymaga rzeczy niemozliwych. Jesli wymaga wiele, to tylko
dlatego, ze daje wiele. On chce, abysmy czynili to, co jest w
naszej mocy i prosili o to, co przerasta nasze sily. Modlitwa
otwiera nas na Boza pomoc, a z Boza pomoca wszystko jest
mozliwe. Wszystko moge w Tym, który mnie umacnia (Flp 4,
13).

The week we all have been waiting for has arrived! You can still bring your homemade desserts down to the social center
hall Saturday after 2:00pm and Sunday after 9:00am. The committee would like to thank all that have donated such wonderful
baskets, raffle prizes, liquor and beautifully handmade afghans. We believe that this years prizes are the best of all.
All this weekend of the festival you can return your SOLD raffle tickets. Please bring them to the gazebo located at the
entrance to the dining hall of the social center the entire festival weekend.

YOU ARE THE LIGHT
OF THE WORLD!
Scaffolding ascends the side of the
church at the ramp door as the
window frame is restored.
Peeling paint and loose wood
endanger the exquisite windows.
Millennia ago, Jesus gave this
message to his disciples. Decades
ago, Pope John Paul II recalled the
same message to young people
gathered form all over the world.
And we need to hear it today
ourselves.
What a wonderful metaphor there
is for this message from Jesus as we
gaze at the beauty of a stained glass
window. We see the faces and
images of holy people from long
ago, and perhaps their faces look
back at us. This exchange of glances
is lit from beyond by the sun burning
millions of miles away. Likewise, it
is the light of Christ which shines
through us and calls us to be light for
others. You and I need to be the
stained glass through which others
can see Christ!
The stained glass windows at
Saint Stanislaus are, for the most
part, installed with the original
construction of the building starting
in 1886. They are imported from
Innsbruck, Austria and are currently
valued at millions of dollars. It has
been more than 25 years since the
wooden frames have been painted.
Now they need to be truly restored
and, in some cases, sections rebuilt.
Won’t you help us? It costs
almost $7,000 to restore just one
large window frame set. Every new
contribution to the Church
Restoration Fund will be used for the
window frames until they are
completed. If your family wishes to
sponsor an entire window, please
contact Fr. Michael about how that
gift will be recognized.
COMMUNITY NEWS
HOSPITALITY SUNDAY/HEALTH SUNDAY
The next Hospitality Sunday (formerly known as Donut
Sunday) will be on October 25th and will also be a Health
Sunday. Flu shots will be available for parishoners who wish to
receive them. The flu shot is covered by Medicare Part B,
otherwise the cost is $24.99, payable by check. Those covered
by Medicare need to bring their Medicare Part B card with
them. You must reserve your shot in advance if you wish to
receive one. Please call Alice Klafczynski at 216-883-0443
before October 11 to reserve a shot. Patient pre-registration
forms will be available at the Manna Table in the vestibule of
the church on October 10th and 11th for those who reserve their
shot. Please fill these forms out before coming for your
shot. There will be more information regarding Health Sunday
in next week's Bulletin.

...exploring the Life and
deeds of
St. Francis of Assisi
The result of two years of research and
highlighting over 500 years of music, this
joyful program features a wide variety of
vocal textures and timbres-mystical
spiritual hymns, lively medieval dances, and
gorgeous Renaissance choral music– all
written in honor of St. Francis.
Il Poverello includes narrated fi rst hand accounts of
Francis’ experiences and light hearted legends of the saints
deeds and miracles. The audience is further treated by the
appearance of several antique instruments: harp, hurdygurdy, frame drum, recorder, dumbek (goblet drum), ‘ud (Middle
Eastern lute) and riqq (Egyptian tambourine), vielle and rebec
(medieval fiddles).
BAPTISM PREPARATION CLASS
Before a family may schedule the celebration of the
Sacrament of Baptism, parents must attend a class to prepare
themselves. Slavic Village parishes share this responsibility
with each other. The next class will be held at Immaculate
Heart of Mary Church on Sunday, November 1, at 1:30 PM.

ST. STANS HISTORICAL FACT by Rob Jagelewski. In the
late 1800’s many Polish immigrants came to the Cleveland
area to work in the steel mills. The mills first expanded their
business by making steel that was used by the United States
Army in the Civil War. After the war the mills made steel for
the expanding railroad business in the western United States. In
1873 Bishop Richard Gilmour organized the Poles in the
southeast section of Cleveland under the patronage of St.
Stanislaus. The first two story church was built in 1881 for
$4,500. Our present church building was finished in 1891 for
the cost of $250,000. In 1906 the Franciscan Friars came to
begin their ministry to our parish, which continues to this day.
In 1909 a tornado struck the church and damaged the twin front
bell towers. The towers were once over 230 feet tall. Through
trial and fortitude, our forbearers continued with the St.
Stanislaus mission of faith. This mission has changed through
the years. Through it all the Catholic faith, Polish traditions,
and Franciscan heritage of the people of St. Stanislaus have
provided a unique community of belief and a beacon of hope
for the city and the neighborhood.
