Ministry of Sport and Tourism of the Republic of Poland “Orlik Basketmania” takes off! 2011-05-10 Almost 5 500 girls and boys from 549 teams have joined “Orlik Basketmania”, Poland’s greatest youth basketball tournament. The event is taking place at 36 sports facilities built under the programme “My Sports Field – ORLIK 2012”, in five Voivodeships in the south of the country: Dolnośląskie (8 Orliks), Małopolskie (8 Orliks), Opolskie (4 Orliks), Podkarpackie (8 Orliks) and Śląskie (8 Orliks). Girls born in 1998-1999 were the first ones to begin competition at an Orlik in KędzierzynKoźle, Opolskie Voivodeship. "Our secret dream is to see at least one participant of the “Orlik Basketmania” tournament make it to the Polish national team" said Ryszard Stachurski, Secretary of State at the Ministry of Sport and Tourism. “However, even if this doesn’t happen and if young people just take up sports and begin to lead a healthy and active lifestyle, we will still have achieved our goal”. Eight boys teams and eight girls teams in each age category (winners of municipality-level qualifying competitions) will reach the final tournament in each Voivodeship. The only exception is Opolskie Voivodeship, where the finals will be played by four girls teams and four boys teams in each age category. Detailed information on tournament is available at www.orlikbasketmania.pl
