It allows identification of an unknown material through analysis of the neutron field distribution of the scattered neutrons (FNSA – Fast Neutron Scattering Analysis). The intense neutron pulses (109 n/s for 2.45 MeV neutrons from the D-D reaction) having duration of the order of few nanoseconds (~10 ns) emitted from plasma focus allow to use the time-of-flight method (TOF) to the analysis of the angular and energy distributions of neutrons scattered on the investigated objects. Monte Carlo simulations (the MCNP5 code has been used) were performed for various variants like: various distances from the scattering object to detector, various scattering angles and various materials (everyday use, explosives and other illicit materials). Results of the simulations of the scattered neutron field from several compounds permit to build a base of signatures (signals registered by neutron detectors) for the basic compounds of the investigated materials. It makes possible, after a mathematic procedure, to determine percent contribution of characteristic important elements in objects hidden e.g. in an airport luggage.
