What should be on the traditional
Polish Christmas Eve table?
Co powinno znajdować się na tradycyjnym polskim stole wigilijnym?

A traditional Christmas Eve supper in Poland consists of beetroot soup with small cabbage
and mushroom dumplings or mushroom soup, piroghi ( a kind of dumplings stuffed with cabbage
and mushrooms), cabbage with beans, potatoes ( not always), mushrooms pickled in vinegar, carp
and herring. Another important feature of the table is kutia (boiled wheat with poppy seeds and
honey) or a poppyseed loaf. Finally, it should be at least 12 various dishes.
There is also an old custom to leave a free seat for unexpected guest and to put some hay under
the tablecloth.

In Britain, in turn, a Christmas dinner consists of roast turkey, roast potatoes and Brussels sprouts,
followed by Christmas pudding, Christmas cake mince pies. There are also crackers, which contain

– the first rock and roll star !
Dzisiaj: Elvis Presley – pierwsza gwiazda rock and rolla!
Elvis Aaron Presley was born in 1935 in Tuppelo, the USA, in a poor working-class family. As a
child he was singing with his parents in a church choir. After leaving secondary school in Memphis
(1953) he became a truck driver. One year after he recorded his first very expressive songs, e.g. That’s
All Right Mama and Blue Moon of Kentucky. The aforementioned songs and a few others brought him
popularity in the USA. Soon afterwards (January 1956), he recorded a famous hit Heartbreak Hotel.
And after that excellent song Presley’s worldwide brilliant career started at once.

But Elvis was not only famous for his rock’n’roll songs. He was also performing country, bluegrass,
blues, religious songs, ballads or popular standards from musicals. Here we may list a lot of them: Blue
Suede Shoes, Don’t Be Cruel, Jailhouse Rock, Viva Las Vegas, Shake Rattle and Roll, Tutti Frutti,
Johnny B.Goode, Memphis Tennessee, Love Me Tender, White Christmas, Crying In The Chapel, In The
Ghetto, Are You Lonesome Tonight?, It’s Now Or Ever, Can’t Help Falling In Love, Good Luck Charm
and others. He popularized jeans and black leather jacket on stage. Moreover, Elvis Presley acted and
sang in over 30 films. He died in 1977.

battery-operated tank. I wrote to Father Christmas and I asked
him for the toy. I got a nice packet for Christmas. I opened it
very quickly and in the middle I only found 2 batteries and a notice:
‘’A toy in a year!”
,,Kiedy byłem mały, to byliśmy biedni. Pamiętam, Ŝe chciałem
dostać czołg na baterie. Napisałem do Św. Mikołaja i poprosiłem
go o tę zabawkę. Pod choinkę dostałem ładną paczkę. Szybko

A RECIPE FOR ‘KUTIA’ /
PRZEPIS NA KUTIĘ
Ingredients:
- ½ kg of wheat seeds or pearl barley
- 1 glass of poppy
- ½ glass of honey
- 20 dag of walnuts or hazelnuts
- 10 dag of raisins
- 10 dag of almonds ( we may also use prunes)
Preparation
Wheat should be soaked a day before. Next day cook and drain it, wash poppy, pour
boiling water, bring to the boil. Then mill, blend poppy, wheat and all the ingredients,
add cut walnuts ( hazelnuts) and almonds. Mix them together and put into the fridge.
Enjoy your meal!

- ½ kg ziaren pszenicy lub kaszy jęczmiennej (pęczak)
- 1 szklanka maku
- ½ szklanki miodu
- 20 dag orzechów włoskich lub laskowych
- 10 dag rodzynek
- 10 dag migdałów (moŜna takŜe uŜyć suszonych śliwek)
Przygotowanie
Pszenicę namoczyć, na drugi dzień ugotować, odcedzić, mak umyć, zalać wrzącą wodą,
zagotować, zemleć, zmieszać mak z pszenicą i pozostałymi składnikami, dodać pokrojone
orzechy i migdały, wymieszać, wstawić do lodówki. Smacznego!
