THE ENGLISH DEPARTMENT OF THE HIGHER SCHOOL
OF LABOR SAFETY MANAGEMENT IN KATOWICE
is pleased to announce an international conference
POLYSEMY IN LANGUAGE AND TRANSLATION
Katowice, Poland, May 12-13, 2014
Over the last thirty years or so an increasingly large number of linguists have become
aware that meaning is at the centre of language and must be taken into account on every
level
of linguistic analysis, from phonology to pragmatics and discourse studies. At the same time,
this growing interest in linguistic meaning has made it quite clear that most linguistic units,
again from phonemes to utterances and texts, are polysemous. Our conference is intended as
a forum for presenting and discussing linguistic polysemy in all its multifarious variety.
Therefore we invite researchers of all linguistic persuasions who are working on the
polysemous structure of linguistic units to present and share with us results of their studies in
whatever linguistic discipline they are working, be it polysemy in phonology, morphology,
syntax, semantics, pragmatics or discourse studies.
In addition to purely linguistic presentations, we also invite researchers who deal with
the practical consequences of polysemy from the cross-linguistic perspective, i.e. translators.
We expect those presentations to be perhaps less theoretical and more practical in the sense
of addressing the translators’ and interpreters’ choices and decisions in their actual work and
practice of translation.
We wish also to extend a most welcome invitation to university students and young
scholars, both linguists and translators, to join our Workshops on Polysemy in Language and
Translation, conducted by some of the most distinguished scholars in these two fields. We
hope this will be a unique opportunity for all the participants to learn some of the details and
tricks of linguistic analysis of polysemy and its applications in the process of translation.
