Rather than gifts of gold, myrrh and frankincense the priest brings God’s blessings to the household. During the priest’s visit there is usually a crucifix placed in between two burning candles on the main table of the household. A prayer with the blessing of the home and those who live in it takes place. It is a chance for a priest to get to know his parishioners on a more personal basis in their homes rather than once a week in a church. All interested in cultivating this beautiful Polish tradition are asked to contact the Parish Office (314.421.5948) or Fr. Marek (pastor@ saintstan.org) to schedule such a pastoral visit. Markiem ([email protected]) w celu zaplanowania takiej duszpasterskiej wizyty. St. Stanislaus® Kostka Deceber 2013 4 Dear Parishioners and Friends, For most Christians, as for the secular media, the theme of solidarity first entered their consciousness in 1980 when an unemployed electrician named Lech Wałęsa led a strike under the banner of “Solidarity” (Solidarność) in the Gdańsk shipyard over the twin issues of food price increases and wage controls. Within 18 months that banner had spawned a trade union with almost ten million members, which ultimately triggered the collapse of the Eastern Bloc and the dissolution of the Warsaw Pact. Even though I was just 7 years old, I remember very well the events of December 1981. It was on December 13th that year that the authoritarian government of the People’s Republic of Poland introduced martial law in an attempt to crush political opposition. Several thousand activists were interned, and strikes were pacified with the help of the army and special riot police units. To this day I can recall vivid images of tanks slowly moving through the snow-covered and otherwise abandoned streets of my town. From that time on, the dribbling paint of the “Solidarność” logo became for me, and for many others, one of the most powerful symbols and one of the most iconic designs of the 20th century. The powerful idea of solidarity has deep roots in Catholic theology. In its original meaning, it identifies the two-fold reality of human experience: our unique individuality and our essential sociality. It challenges the inadequacies of both individualism and collectivism by insisting that the human person is a social being and the goal of the social order is not only the highest good for each person but also the common good of all. As such, solidarity is a key principal of Catholic social teaching. The key figure in putting the idea of “Solidarity” center-stage was, of course, Pope John Paul II, at the start of whose pontificate “Solidarność” itself was born. For the Polish Pope, arguing against an avowedly Marxist state ideology, the term “solidarity” had a clear advantage. Whereas “class struggle” is a struggle against others, “solidarity” implies a struggle together with others, against injustice (rather than other people) as the enemy. For Wojtyła, it was extremely important to register that solidarity is a two-way street. Even with the weakest, true solidarity is never a matter of the powerful dispensing favors “out of the kindness of their hearts” to those less fortunate than themselves, and it is never simply about salving our conscience by handouts from our surplus. Certainly, says Pope John Paul II, “those who are more influential, because they have a greater share of goods and common services, should feel responsible for the weaker and be ready to share with them all they possess” (encyclical Solicitudo Rei Socialis paragraph 39). For John Paul II the lack of solidarity with the weak, the poor, and the marginalized is anti-Christ. As Christians, we must allow love in solidarity with others to permeate our lives. The follower of Christ cannot simply go from one congenial social setting to another familiar setting, arriving by car or plane, completely insulated from the savage effects of poverty and injustice. Life in a virtual gated community is not a Christian life. Such Catholic spirituality of solidarity enters into the struggle for justice with the clear recognition that all of us are connected in both social sin and social grace. For example, racism is not only unjust to the person of a different race; it destroys the soul of a racist. Sexism is not only unjust toward persons of the opposite gender; it destroys the soul of the sexist. Homophobia is not only unjust to our lesbian sisters and gay brothers; it destroys the soul of the homophobe. Economic and social domination of the marginalized persons and people is not only imprisoning them in poverty and deprivation; it eats away at the souls of the powerful individuals and mighty nations. Moreover, a spirituality of solidarity knows that the depths of human suffering can only be redeemed by God’s loving solidarity with the human community in its struggle to create a more just and peace-filled world for all. The Incarnation of the Second Person of the Blessed Trinity is the ultimate act of solidarity of God with humankind. The passion and death of Jesus is not only an historical event; it is lived daily in the bodies, spirits, and lives of people all over the world, from our own impoverished and violent inner cities to the slums of Rio de Janeiro, Port-au-Prince, and Calcutta. Likewise, the resurrection is realized daily as people take steps to affirm their own dignity and rights or to open their spirits beyond the walls of racism, sexism, and all other forms of domination and control. A spirituality of solidarity grounds us in the sense of relationship, mutuality, and wholeness – with God, with each other, and with the created world, for which we all are truly responsible. Fr. Jako uczniowie Chrystusa jesteśmy wezwani, by solidarna miłość do każdego bliźniego przenikała nasze życie. Seksizm nie jedynie niesprawiedliwy wobec osoby o odmiennej płci – niszczy on duszę tego, kto go praktykuje. Ks. Marek Proboszcz St. Stanislaus® Kostka December 2013 6 DISCERNEMENT UPDATE All Discernment meetings are open to any parishioner. If you want to attend once and not come back that’s fine. If you want to regularly participate that is also fine. The bottom line is that the path St. Stan’s chooses will be decided by us parishioners. The focus of the committee is to gather information about a variety of choices we will have and to participate in conversations about those choices. Our next Discernment Committee meeting is on Sunday, January 12th at 12:15 p.m. Following is a short article from the website of the Holy Redeemer’s parish in Forte Wayne, Indiana. There are MANY WAYS TO BE CATHOLIC according to the Roman Catholic Church, and in fact, there are many Catholic Churches that share the same faith, sacraments, and doctrine as the Roman Catholic Church. Prior to the Second Vatican Council, these Churches were referred to as "Rites" because the theological view at the time was that there was only One Church, that being the Roman Catholic Church. Vatican II changed all that. The Council Fathers insisted that the various Rites within the Catholic Church be referred to as Churches in their own right, even when their theologies or practices differed from those of the Roman Church. As a result of this change of terminology and theological view of the former Rites, the Roman Catholic Church committed itself to respecting the various other Catholic theologies and Churches without trying to change their respective traditions into the dominant Roman way of thinking. There are two distinct categories of Catholic Churches: those with formal, juridical ties to the Roman Catholic Church as an institution, and those that do not have formal, juridical ties. Both categories of Churches are considered Catholic by the Roman Catholic Church, although the desire on their part is that all the Churches ultimately come into full, juridical union with Rome. The former category, encompassing those in full union with Rome include the Byzantine Catholic Church, the Melkite Catholic Church, the Maronite Catholic Church, the Ukrainian Catholic Church, etc... These Churches have their own hierarchy, their own policies on whether married men can be ordained, and their own codex of canon law. The latter category of Catholic Churches, as defined as recently as June 2000 in the papal document, "Dominus Iesus", written by then Cardinal Ratzinger and promulgated by Pope John Paul II, includes the following: the Old Catholic Churches from the Utrecht recension, the Polish National Catholic Church, the Eastern Orthodox Churches (Greek, Serbian, Russian, etc...), and the Oriental Orthodox Churches (Armenian, Syrian, Coptic, etc...). There is no question as to the validity of the Holy Orders of these clergy and there is no question as to the validity of all the Sacraments confected by the clergy of these Churches. As the document, "Dominus Iesus" makes clear, it is the unity of the faith, doctrine and theology that define a Church's Catholicty--not the level of formal and juridical attachment to the Roman Catholic Church as an institution. In this Declaration of the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith, the Roman Catholic Church recognizes the validity of Holy Orders as well as the validity of the sacraments in other Catholic Churches: "Therefore, there exists a single Church of Christ, which subsists in the Catholic Church, governed by the Successor of Peter and by the Bishops in communion with him. The Churches which, while not existing in perfect communion with the (Roman) Catholic Church, remain united to her by means of the closest bonds, that is, by apostolic succession and a valid Eucharist, are true particular Churches. Therefore, the Church of Christ is present and operative also in these Churches, even though they lack full communion with the (Roman) Catholic Church. Therefore, these separated Churches and communities as such... have by no means been deprived of significance and importance in the mystery of salvation. For the Spirit of Christ has not refrained from using them as means of salvation which derive their efficacy from the very fullness of grace and truth entrusted to the Catholic Church." (IV Unicity and Unity of the Church, paragraph 17). In addition to this official Vatican document, the Roman Catholic Church has long held that the Old Catholic Churches possess valid Holy Orders and valid sacraments. Catholic Visitor, Inc., published the following in 1978: "Old Catholics (the Church of Utrecht, which severed relations with Rome in 1724; the National Polish Church, which has its origin near the end of the 19th century; German, Austrian and Swiss Old Catholics, who broke away from Rome following the First Vatican Council in 1870 because they objected to the dogma of papal infallibility! accept the first seven ecumenical councils and doctrine formulated before 1054, but reject communion with the pope and a number of other Roman Catholic doctrines and practices. They have a valid priesthood and valid sacraments. They have recognized Anglican ordinations since 1925, that they have full communion with the Church of England since 1932, and have taken part in the ordination of Anglican Bishops." (Published with Ecclestiastical Approval by Our Sunday Visitor, Inc., Huntington, Indiana 46750). In doing so we ask God’s protection and blessing upon those who live, work or visit throughout the coming year. It is also a visible sign that we have invited God’s presence into our homes. St. Stanislaus® Kostka December * Grudzień 2013 10 SAINTS OF THE MONTH ŚWIĘCI MIESIĄCA It disruptive to our tranquil Christmas celebrations, to have the commemoration of the Holly Innocents just three days later, on December 28th. It is a unique day on the Christian calendar. On Holy Innocents we observe an event which marked the brutal deaths of an untold number of infants and toddlers. This day is more fully known as the Commemoration of the Slaughter of the Holy Innocents. Sometimes the word “slaughter” is replaced with the word “massacre.” In either case, these are hard and cruel words which we prefer to not have to speak of in church. We might manage to work them in a time or two during Lent and Good Friday, but we would prefer to avoid them in Christmastime. One of the pitfalls of the Christmas celebration is the way in which we often romanticize the whole event. We make it seem that our Lord came into a world that is not our world. In the “Christmas world” we create a sweet baby lying peacefully in a sanitary manger admired by immaculately clean shepherds who never utter a “naughty word.” The scene is presided over by a calm young mother in a freshly laundered blue robe. Angels provide the musical accompaniment and all is calm, all is bright. The commemoration of the Holy Innocents dispels the idea that God’s Son was sent to any world but our own. God’s Son was sent into this world - our world - in which war and gun violence and abortion and abuse claim their victims; the powerless, the vulnerable, and especially the children. This is the world into which the Son of God was born as a true human being who would be one of the powerless and vulnerable and who would suffer the abuse of the rich and powerful and die by the order of a cruel and corrupt system of justice. This is the way of the world and God’s Son was one of its victims. However, the way of the world is not the way of God. And it is God who writes the final chapter. God is at work in the world, influencing people to love and to care about others, especially the poor, the disadvantaged, the ones whose cries aren’t heard by the world. God is out to reclaim the world that was so lovingly created by God. God is at work through you and me and other people of faith, binding up the wounds inflicted by an uncaring world, restoring what greed for power and wealth has destroyed, giving life where there was only death. I to do Boga należeć będzie ostatnie słowo!
