The region stands out for its unspoilt nature, vast forests and shimmering, crystal-clear lakes scattered among scenic glacial formations. Particularly noteworthy is the lovely Czarna Hańcza, the deepest lake in Poland, and, flowing through it, the river of the same name, which is extremely popular with kayakers. Apart from kayaking waterways, the fairy-tale land is criss-crossed by plenty of hiking and cycling routes, doubling in winter as cross-country ski runs. Enthusiasts of winter sports can also enjoy the modern ski resort of Szelment in Leszczewo near Suwałki. In the summer, you can explore the region by taking a cruise around Lake Wigry or a ride on the historic narrow-gauge train that now carries tourists from Płociczno to Krusznik. Among the greatest attractions of the Suwałki Region are the Rospuda Valley, the Camaldolese Monastery in Wigry and the unique Augustów Canal. While staying in the area, you must visit the open-air museum of traditional architecture in Puńsk. Suwałki itself plays host to a very popular summer blues festival. Another magnet for tourists is the colourful traditions of the nations that live in this multicultural borderland (Lithuanians, Russians, Belorussians). These are popularized at a variety of festivals and ftes presenting crafts, regional food as well as spiritual culture: dances, songs, customs and rituals. To promote the region, the basniowasuwalszczyzna.pl portal was developed, featuring a children’s game based on local legends, tradition and history. The website also describes the nine most popular hiking trails around Suwałki. In the 5th contest Poland Even More Beautiful. Seven Miracles of EU Funds, this wide-scale promotional campaign won the main award in the Promotional Product category.
