during storage and use
3. Hazards Identification
• Non-hazardous in finishing form. The product is not hazardous to users under normal use.
• Residual quantities of process chemicals, styrene and blowing agents are insignificant.
Possible accumulation of residual blowing agents can occur if storage in warehouses or
containers shall be closed, unventilated.
• The product is organic and therefore combustible if exposed to intense heat or a fire.
Toxic fumes may be released in fire situations. Static electricity may be an ignition source for
initiating the accumulation of blowing agents.
• Polystyrene melts at high temperature and molten droplets may cause skin burns.
• Fumes/vapors released during thermal operations such as hot wire cutting may cause respiratory
irritation.
4. First Aid
• Eye contamination will cause irritation – wash with clean running water. If irritation persists, seek
medical advice.
• Skin contamination will cause some irritation – wash with clean water and soap. If in contact with
molten material, treat affected area immediately with cold water and seek medical attention.
Do not attempt to remove any molten or solidified material from the skin.
• Inhalation of dust – Dust particles from cutting are unlikely to be of inhalable dimensions unless
power tools are used. If problems are experienced remove to fresh air, rinse mouth and drink water
and seek medical advice
• Inhalation of toxic fumes - move person to fresh air; if effects occur, consult a physician.
5. Fire Fighting Measures
Extinguishing Media: Water fog or fine spray. Dry chemical fire extinguishers. Carbon dioxide fire
extinguishers. Foam.
Fire Fighting Procedures: Isolate fire and deny unnecessary entry. Keep people away.
Soak thoroughly with water to cool and prevent re-ignition. If material is molten, do not apply direct
water stream, use fine water spray, CO2 or foam. Cool surroundings with water to localize fire zone.
Extinguishing Products of Combustion: those normally associated with combustion of organic
hydrocarbons and should be considered toxic. Will include carbon monoxide, carbon dioxide and
hydrogen bromide. Dense smoke will be generated and suitable breathing apparatus should be worn
when fighting fires.
Unusual Fire and Explosion Hazards: Mechanical cutting, grinding or sawing can cause formation
of dusts. To reduce the potential for dust explosion, do not permit dust to accumulate.
Special Protective Equipment for Firefighters: In the case of continuous combustion, use selfcontained breathing apparatus (SCBA) and protective fire fighting clothing (includes fire fighting
helmet, coat, trousers, boots, and gloves).

6. Accidental Release Measures
The product is in solid form and poses no hazard
• Personal Precautions: There are no special required instructions.
• Environmental Precautions: There are no special required instructions.
Steps to be Taken if Material is Released or Spilled: Contain spilled material if possible.
Sweep up. Collect in suitable and properly labeled containers.
XPS waste - are not dangerous, it collects and recycles 100%.
7. Handling and Storage
• Storage - in ventilated warehouses. Do not store near to any sources of heat.
• Handling General Handling: Fabrication methods which involve cutting into this product may release
the blowing agent(s) remaining in the cells. Provide adequate ventilation to assure localized
concentrations in release areas are maintained below the lower flammable limit. This product is
combustible and may constitute a fire hazard if improperly used or installed.
• Avoid dust generation during secondary processing. Hand cutting tools should be used when
possible. If power tools are used, suitable dust extraction should be used and / or respiratory and eye
protection.
8. Exposure Controls / Personal Protection
Respiratory Protection
• No MEL (Minimum Equipment List) applicable but if dust is generated it is recommended
that a disposable face mask is used to improve comfort.
Hand and Skin Protection
• No special precautions but gloves may be worn for comfort. Use gloves to protect from mechanical
injury. Selection of gloves will depend on the task.
Eye Protection
• When cutting or processing with power tools, or working with product above head height, eye
protection complying with EN 166 is advised.
9. Physical and Chemical Properties
Appearance – rigid closed cell plastic foam
Color: orange (usually), but may be made in other colours
Odor: Odorless
Melting Point – above 110ºC
Flash Point – above 300ºC
Autoignition Temperature: 355 °C
Flammable Limits In Air Lower: Not applicable
Solubility – insoluble in water and generally chemical inert. Soluble in organic solvents.
10. Stability and Reactivity
Stable under normal conditions of use. Avoid exposure to heat and flames, and prolonged exposure
to sunlight.
Incompatible Materials: Avoid contact with oxidizing. Resistant to many chemicals but not to
solvents. Care should be taken in the choice of adhesives to be used with XPS.
Decomposition Products – fumes from molten material and smoke from fires involving the product
can contain toxic gases such as carbon monoxide, carbon dioxide and hydrogen bromide.
Conditions to Avoid: Avoid temperatures above 300°C. Exposure to elevate d temperatures can
cause product to decompose.
11. Toxicological Information
Extruded polystyrene is non-toxic and not irritating to the skin or eyes.
LD50 Oral: Not applicable
LD50 Skin: not applicable
LD50 Inhalation: not applicable
