Marcus Taft is a Professor in the School of Psychology, University of New South Wales. He is primarily interested
in cognitive mechanisms involved in reading, with a focus on differences between good and poor adult readers,
as well as differences between languages. He also has a research interest in bilingual language processing,
particularly bilinguals who are born and raised in their second language environment. Professor Taft’s influential
research on psycholinguistics makes him one of the pioneers in this field. For the past thirty years, he has
investigated the influence orthography and morphology has on reading ability and differences between readers in
other languages such as French, Spanish, Chinese and Japanese. He is currently pursuing implications of his
model of adult reading for reading acquisition in children.

Ogólny cel kursu:
To introduce important issues and theoretical approaches in relation to the decoding processes used
by adult readers. Acquisition and individual differences will also be considered.
Problematyka:
Specific topics include: The role of phonology in silent reading, the use of internal orthographic
structure, morphological processing, and the processing of letter position. The topics discussed will be
of relevance to the mastery of reading, not only in the early years, but at the advanced level as well.
There will also be potential implications for second language learning, and for remediation of reading
problems.
Sposób realizacji:
An interactive lecture & lab activities (task demonstrations).
Spodziewany efekt:
At the end of the course each student should have an understanding of relevant issues to the question
of how proficient adult readers read, and a theoretical structure for helping to frame ideas in relation to
this question.

Lecture and lab 10 hours.
