post-national constellation]. Kłopoty z tożsamością [Troubles with identity] edited by M. Golka –

The aim of the present paper has been to discuss the reflexive relations of the nation state and the national
identity under the conditions of late modernity. Assuming that the functional role played by the nationstates in Europe has objectively dwindled, together with the national constellation of the modern
international relations, and that Habermas’s idea of an emerging post-national constellation is indeed
accurate, this makes it important to consider the options that national identity is left with under these
conditions. The paper advances a claim that national identity as such does not provide an adequate tool for
social mobilization any more. This does not, however, make particular national identities necessarily weak.
Apart from a realistic scenario whereby the identity level becomes adapted to the requirements of the
institutional domain, which seems to be the preferable way of thinking of most post-national social theorists,
one should seriously examine the other option of national identity becoming confrontational with respect to
reality, and developing its own anti-realistic definition of political, social and economic situation.
