As most of you know, AmazonSmile is a website operated by Amazon that allows customers to enjoy the same wide selection of products, low prices, and convenient shopping features as on Amazon.com. The difference is that now when you shop on AmazonSmile (smile.amazon.com) the AmazonSmile Foundation will donate .5% of the price of eligible purchases back to Catholic Charities. Please make sure when you first visit the AmazonSmile site you select Catholic Charities Diocese of Rockville Centre as the charitable organization you wish to support when prompted and then you may begin to shop. .5% might seem like a small amount to be donated back but the amount adds up fast when many Amazon shoppers designate this charity to benefit. Do you know….OCTOBER IS THE MONTH DEDICATED TO THE ROSARY In these dark days and the days approaching our elections, we are to pray the powerful prayer of the Rosary. It is more than 800 years old and it’s still the source of inexhaustible graces. It is powerful enough to stop wars, bring peace to our world and convert sinners. When the rosary was given to St. Dominic in the 13th Century, its primary purpose was to convert those in error back to the truths of Catholicism. Throughout history, this story continues to repeat itself. When Catholicism has been threatened, popes and saints have doubled up their efforts to promote the Rosary as a means to overcome evil. As previously written in one of these articles, one of the most dramatic examples was the appeal of Pope St. Pius V, who asked all of Christian Europe to pray the Rosary for victory over an invading Islamic armada. On October 7, 1571, standing at the window of the papal apartment in Rome, he had a vision of the Christian victory won that day during the Battle of Lepanto. That’s why the Church celebrated the memorial of Our Lady of the Rosary on October 7 each year. We are now at war with ISIS – the power behind the Rosary could stop this as well. The recent Holy Fathers have also given a great example of devotion to the Holy Rosary. One of the first public statements that St. John Paul II made after he was elected pope in 1978 was that the Rosary was his favorite prayer. He prayed it often alone or in public. Unbeknownst to St. John Paul II, his witness touched a future pope, Fr. Jorge Bergoglio, who was deeply inspired at a public recitation of the Rosary in 1985 in Rome. In an interview, the then Cardinal Bergoglio recalled how St. John Paul II was in front of everybody on his knees praying the rosary. The then Cardinal Bergoglio was distracted by the piety and devotion of how St. John Paul II prayed the rosary. He said “I felt that this man, chosen to lead the Church, was following a path up to his Mother in the sky, a path set out on from his childhood. I became aware of the density of the word of the Mother of Guadalupe to Saint Juan Diego: “Don’t be afraid, am I not your mother?” I understood the presence of Mary in the life of the Pope, and from that moment on I began to recite the fifteen mysteries (now 20 with the Luminous mysteries) of the rosary every day.” If Pope Francis can take the time in his busy daily schedule to pray at least 4 rosaries a day, can you find time to pray at least one set of mysteries which can be prayed almost anywhere? We need the rosary today more than ever as a weapon of truth and an instrument of mercy. The rosary can help fight the evil that dwells in our families and in our world. Pray the Rosary for our priests as well as for the forgotten souls in Purgatory. Even if you have to fight distractions all through your whole Rosary, be sure to fight well, arms in hand that is to say, do not stop saying your Rosary even if it is difficult to say and you have no sensible devotion. It is a terrible battle, but one that is profitable to the faithful soul. Take up the spiritual sword of the Rosary and renew the face of the world! Join us for Rosary in October Wednesdays 7 PM in English Fridays 7 PM in Polish SATURDAY, OCTOBER 3RD AT RIVERHEAD TOWN HALL 1:00-2:00 PM Październik jest miesiącem poświęconym Matce Bożej.
