in the presence of the Eucharistic Lord. Benediction takes
place at 8:50 AM.

Congratulations to Valerie Verdia, winner of the
50/50 drawing for the month of December. Thank you
to all who participate in this parish fundraiser.
BABY SHOWER
Each year, the Church celebrates "Sanctity of Life
Month" during January. This time is set aside to remind
us of the sacredness of human life from conception to
natural death. Many issues challenge our beliefs - abortion, capital punishment, physician-assisted suicide, stem
cell issues - to name a few.
On January 22nd, in particular, we are reminded of the
anniversary of the Supreme Court's decision to legalize
abortion. In the past, our parish has participated in a project to help support young, unwed mothers who turn to
the Church for help in bringing their babies to birth. This
is a small, but very positive and effective way of directly
assisting women who may have considered aborting their
unborn child.
On the weekends of January 18/19 and 25/26, we will
have a "Baby Shower". When you come to Mass, we ask
that you bring new items for babies up to one year of age,
such as as pampers, undershirts, stretchies, onesies,
blankets, crib sheets, etc. Boxes will be placed by the
front doors of the upper and lower churches to receive
your donations. We are grateful for whatever support you
can give to this project.

THIS IS MY BELOVED SON
FEAST OF FAITH
This Sunday’s celebration of the Baptism of the Lord
closes the Christmas season. In the scriptures we see one
more epiphany, or manifestation, of the Spirit of God in
Jesus - but this time it is as an adult, rather than as a
child. Jesus’ baptism also serves as the inauguration of
his prophetic mission and the messianic age.
Today’s reading from Isaiah describes God’s chosen
Messiah, upon whom God’s spirit rests. In the Acts of the
Apostles Peter says that “God anointed Jesus of Nazareth
with the Holy Spirit and power” (Acts 10:38). Finally, in
the proclamation from Matthew’s Gospel Jesus’ baptism
in water goes almost unnoticed. The crucial moment
comes when the Spirit of God comes upon Jesus and a
voice from heaven echoes the words of Isaiah: “This is
my beloved Son, with whom I am well
pleased” (Matthew 3:17).
The Sign of the Cross
At the beginning of our prayer, we make the sign of
the cross together. This sign, simple and powerful,
operates on many levels. We trace the sign of the cross
over our bodies, reminding ourselves that the cross of
Christ has become our source of resurrection, life, and
grace. With this sign, we also profess our faith in the
Trinity: the presider does not say “in the names,” but “in
the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy
Spirit”- three persons, one God. The sign of the cross is
also a baptismal reminder, for every sign of the cross
echoes the words spoken over us at our baptism, which
marked our entry into the saving mystery of Christ. This
many-layered sign is also our primary sign of blessing:
the cross is traced over people, places, and things upon
which we ask God to impart divine benediction.
In blessing ourselves with the sign of the cross at the
beginning of Mass, we acknowledge the mystery that has
gathered us together: that Christ, the crucified and risen
One, is living, and that we are members of his Body. Our
response, our Amen, is our yes to all this, our first
profession of faith.

CALLED TO SERVE
The status of God’s beloved Son is not one he clings
to. It is one he shares. All of us are called to be sons and
daughters of God. In Jesus, we can all claim God’s favor.
The second reading makes this clear. Here we read of the
baptism of Cornelius and his household. Peter’s speech
recalls the anointing of Jesus by the Holy Spirit and the
great power that swept through Israel and onto the
doorstep of the Gentile Cornelius.
As for his household, so for us. There is an end to our
work on earth, to our baptismal vocation and the
honorable work we do. But there is no end to the saving
life given to us through baptism. There is no end to the
life of the children of God; there is no end to God’s
compassion, which we know in Christ Jesus. There is no
end to our status as chosen and beloved people of God.
Because of Jesus’ life, death, and resurrection, we are
forever among those on whom God’s favor rests.

UROCZYSTOŚĆ CHRZTU PAŃSKIEGO

Izajasz 42,1-4.6-7
Jezus przyszedł z Galilei nad Jordan do Jana, żeby
przyjąć chrzest od niego. Lecz Jan powstrzymywał Go,
mówiąc: To ja potrzebuję chrztu od Ciebie, a Ty
przychodzisz do mnie? Jezus mu odpowiedział: Pozwól
teraz, bo tak godzi się nam wypełnić wszystko, co
sprawiedliwe. Wtedy Mu ustąpił. A gdy Jezus został
ochrzczony, natychmiast wyszedł z wody. A oto otworzyły
Mu się niebiosa i ujrzał Ducha Bożego zstępującego jak
gołębicę i przychodzącego na Niego. A głos z nieba
mówił: Ten jest mój Syn umiłowany, w którym mam
upodobanie. Mateusz 3,13-17
Obecność Jezusa w wodach Jordanu pomiędzy
grzesznikami szukającymi oczyszczenia jest dowodem
wielkiej delikatności Boga. Chrystus, „namaszczony
Duchem Świętym i mocą”, staje obok człowieka, który
jest często „jak nadłamana trzcina i ledwie tlący się
płomyk”. Nie krzyczy, nie gromi, nie grzmi „z góry” (z
nieba rozlega się łagodny głos Ojca wyznający miłość
Synowi, a w Nim i każdemu z nas). Chrystus staje wśród
nas, by dając siebie, umocnić nas i ”wyprowadzić
z ciemności” grzechu, to znaczy oddalenia od Boga.

FIESTA DE LA FE
Convocados por Dios
San Ignacio de Loyola enfatizaba mucho la necesidad de
encontrar a Dios en todo, no porque Dios estuviera perdido
o ausente, sino porque las personas no siempre son
conscientes de su presencia en ellas o entre ellas. En la
asamblea litúrgica es Dios quien nos convoca a celebrar
con él, con Cristo y por medio de Cristo, la nueva alianza,
la Pascua misma. Los textos posteriores a la resurrección
así lo manifiestan, la preferencia del Señor por revelarse a
la Iglesia en asamblea. Curiosamente, somos convocados
por Dios y él se hace presente; nosotros somos
participantes en este encuentro, más no protagonistas,
porque el protagonista es Cristo mismo. No es una reunión
cualquiera o reunión con fines meramente sociales, sino la
reunión de los hombres y las mujeres libres que se reúnen a
celebrar la presencia de Cristo y responden al llamado de
Dios. No somos nosotros los que convocamos ‘una reunión
con Dios’, sino Dios quien convoca un encuentrocelebración con nosotros. Por ello, no venimos como
individuos aislados, sino como miembros de un solo
cuerpo; no comulgamos para vivir la comunión, sino que
comulgamos porque vivimos la comunión en medio de
nuestra gran diversidad. Somos asamblea convocada,
cuerpo vivo y santo que se hará sacrificio de alabanza.
