Let us pray.
God of love and compassion, before this season of
unrest, we had grown comfortable with thinking of them
only as they relate to us - as our parents and spouses, sons
and daughters, brothers and sisters, neighbors and friends.
Today, history and circumstance, force us to release
them into your care and into our country’s service. We
pray for them and bless them in your name. Grant them
your protection and a safe return home. Amen.

As members of the parish faith
community, it is our responsibility to
remember both in concrete and spiritual
ways those who cannot celebrate with
us each week because they are ill.
Those who are sick in turn, remember
all of us daily in their prayers and in their sufferings. We
experience many blessings because of their remembering
us. And so ... please remember in your prayers:

Our Financial Support of St. Ferdinand Parish
Thank you for your stewardship over the recent weeks. This is a combined report for the past two weekends – the
last Sunday of Fiscal Year 2003 and the first Sunday of the new Fiscal Year 2004. We will be working over the summer
on our annual financial report and adjusting the budget for the new year. We will publish a brief report concerning both
in the fall.
Your generosity in support of the ministry of our beloved Pope in the recent Peter’s Pence collection (to date
$3,964.09) and for the charitable works of the Missionary Co-Op last Sunday ($5,635.54) is highly commendable. I
have often said that the people of St. Ferdinand Parish are extremely generous to the missions and to those in need, and
you demonstrate your Christian concern for others time and time again.
The support that we have received for our parish over the last two weekends, however, is becoming extremely
worrisome as the totals are the lowest regular collections in nearly six years. There are undoubtedly a number of factors
that may be the cause for this: a) collections are down in many parishes, due in part to our concerns about the economy;
b) summer vacations; c) nearly every parish in our area now offers at least one Mass in the Polish language; and finally,
d) many people “split” their contributions with other charitable concerns. This last factor appears to be occurring here
in our parish, particularly during the last year. In the tradition of our Church, when we help charities, missionaries and
other efforts either within or outside of our Archdiocese, people gave in addition to their regular support of the parish.
Over this past year here at St. Ferdinand’s one can tell immediately when there has been a second collection because our
weekly stewardship of the mission and ministries of our local parish goes down significantly. So in addition to the
decline in support that we are experiencing from envelope users, we are also experiencing parishioners splitting their
loose money donations between the parish and whatever other cause is appealing for your support.
Each month we are asked to pray for and financially support at least one ministry that operates more broadly and
outside of our parish. Our support for these important works of the Church unites us with our brothers and sisters of the
Catholic faith and reminds us that we are a universal Church. It is proper that we are challenged to be concerned about
the world outside of our parish boundaries. What no one expects or asks of us, however, is to decrease our commitment
to St. Ferdinand’s in order to help others. We have always been a people who gave in addition to our regular support of
the Church. To decrease our financial support of this parish will result in reductions of service and ministries here that
we do not appear ready to sacrifice, at least from what I hear and observe in the day to day life of our parish.

ARCHDIOCESAN WEEKDAY RADIO
PROGRAMS DEBUT ON NEW STATION
AT NEW TIME
Archdiocese of Chicago radio programs are now airing Monday
through Friday in a new time slot and on a well-known radio station that can easily be heard throughout the Chicago area.
"Catholic Community of Faith" programming airs from 9 a.m.
to 10 a.m. on WCSN, Radio-820-AM.
The new program lineup features news and information about
the ministries, agencies and services of the Archdiocese of
Chicago. Topics of faith are explored with a Catholic perspective.
Also significant is the fact that Archdiocesan programs will follow the popular national Catholic radio program, "Morning
Air," hosted by Jeff Cavins who is known for his EWTN television series, "Life on the Rock." Starboard Network produces
"Morning Air" out of Minneapolis, and it can be heard from 7
a.m. to 9 a.m. on Radio-820-AM.
Tune in for "Morning Air" from 7 a.m. to 9 a.m., and for
Archdiocese of Chicago radio programming from 9 a.m. to 10
a.m. every weekday morning on Radio-820-AM, the new home

Mother’s Day Peace Project
“God chose us in him before the world began, to be holy and
blameless in his sight, to be full of love.”
Eph 1:4
“Our lives are full of transitions. They take us from what we
know, into the unknown. Transitions present us with a new
mission, a new orientation, a new challenge, a new moment
in our vocation, a new part of living our baptism into Jesus.”
Action Idea/s for the Week:
When we go to church this week, let us feel the power of letting the Spirit “assemble” us there and “animate” us for mission in the world. Let yourself imagine yourself on a mission
— a mission at home, in the community, at work. Help your
children understand that they can make a difference in their
world around them.

Jadwigi, nastêpnie wy³ania siê bia³a kopu³a koœcio³a Matki
Boskiej Anielskiej, a zaraz potem dwie wie¿e (jedna
wyszczerbiona – pami¹tka po burzy) œw. Stanis³awa Kostki
chyba z najniebezpieczniejsz¹ na œwiecie plebani¹
(budynek stoi niemal na autostradzie). Za Division mijamy
œwi¹tyniê misji œw. Trójcy, a w oddali widaæ jeszcze dwie
wie¿e nieczynnego od ponad dziesiêciu lat koœcio³a œw.
Bonifacego (z którym nie wiadomo co zrobiæ). Po lewej
stronie autostrady, trochê w oddali usadowi³ siê œw. Jan
Kanty. Gdyby nie budynki, zobaczylibyœmy wkrótce
równie¿ i œw. M³odzianków. Niemal wszystkie te koœcio³y
powsta³y sto lub wiêcej lat temu ogromnym wysi³kiem
Polaków, ubogich emigrantów.
W koœcio³ach tych i ulicach wokó³ nich zaklête s¹
niezwyk³e historie - historie poszczególnych ludzi:
biedaków, robotników, rzemieœlników, kupców, handlarzy,
sklepikarzy, przedsiêbiorców i inteligencji, a tak¿e historie
organizacji polonijnych i samego Koœcio³a. Kiedyœ
Polaków mieszka³o tu od 60 do 90 procent, teraz zaledwie
garstka. Starsi poumierali a m³odsi przenieœli siê gdzie
indziej. Z kolei nowi emiganci nie znaleŸli ani jednego
powodu, by tu siê osiedlaæ. Wielu z nich przeje¿dza dzisiaj
i bogatym ¿yciem têtni³y kiedyœ te dzielnice. Mo¿e jedynie
W szko³ach sobotnich nikt
chyba tego nie wyjaœni. W koœcio³ach te¿ siê o tym nie
mówi. Kamienie zaœ same wo³aæ nie bêd¹; nie opowiedz¹
o polskim ¿ywiole, który tu zamieszkiwa³. Chocia¿ jednak...
mo¿e, gdy przy³o¿y siê ucho do œcian owych œwi¹tyñ,
zabrzmi¹ gdzieœ dzwonki na procesjê, us³yszy siê muzykê
organów, terkotanie kó³, stukot koñskich kopyt, a chwilê
potem tak¿e szczêk ¿elaznych tramwajów. Mo¿e i wielkie
siê oddech wewn¹trz œwi¹tyni, to mo¿e i doleci do nas
zapach prawdziwego z³otego kadzid³a, którego ju¿
w koœcio³ach nie znajdziesz.
Za wyj¹tkim œw. Trójcy, parafie, jak i ca³e dzielnice
zatraci³y niemal zupe³nie swój polski charakter i dawn¹
energiê. W najstarszej polskiej parafii w Chicago œw.
Stanis³awa (powsta³ej w 1867 roku) obecnie jedna zaledwie
Msza œw., a sekretarka biegle mówi po angielsku i ...
hiszpañsku. A swego czasu parafia liczy³a 40 tys. wiernych,
a w szkole ponad 30 sióstr uczy³o 2500 dzieci! Podobnie
jest gdzie indziej. U Jana Kantego nikt ju¿ nawet nie
odprawia po polsku. Ale koœcio³y siê zachowa³y. Stoj¹.
A i dawne polskie
i pokazaæ. Mo¿e wówczas rodzice jad¹cy do œródmieœcia
us³ysz¹: „Tato, zobacz, ten na prawo to koœció³ Matki
Boskiej Anielskiej, a tam - Stanis³awa Kostki”.

TACA NIEDZILNA
Dziêkujê wszystkim za z³o¿one ofiary w ostatnich tygodniach. Poni¿ej przedstawiony jest raport z dwóch minionych niedziel- ostatniej niedzieli starego roku fiskalnego 2003 i pierwszej niedzieli nowego roku fiskalnego 2004.
Latem zamierzamy pracowaæ nad nowym raportem finansowym i dostosowaæ do niego bud¿et na rozpoczêty ju¿ rok
fiskalny 2004. Jesieni¹ opublikujemy wyniki naszej pracy.
Suma któr¹ otrzymaliœmy by³a najni¿sza od prawie szeœciu lat.
Ostatni
fakt znacznie siê ujawni³ w minionym roku. W tradycji naszego Koœcio³a by³ zwyczaj sk³adania dodatkowej ofiary na
parafi¹. Nasza pomoc w potrzebach innych jednoczy nas z braæmi i siostrami w wierze i jednoczeœnie przypomina nam,
œwiatem i poza granicami naszej parafii.
Zmniejszenie naszego wsparcia
finansowego bêdzie przyczyn¹ redukcji s³u¿by i wielu pos³ug, do czego nie jestemy jeszcze przygotowani.

•St. Mary of Providence “Have-A-Heart” Tag Days.
Every year the city of Chicago sponsors “Have-A-Heart”
Tag Days. It is an opportunity for Chicago not-for-profit
charitable organizations to seek funds from passers-by on
the corners of our streets. In return for a donation we give
each donor a “Have-A-Heart” remembrance.
St. Mary of Providence, a school and residence for the
developmentally challenged, has served persons with disabilities for over 77 years. St. Mary’s is requesting assistance in making this event successful. Tag Days are set for
Thursday and Friday, September 4 and 5. We need good
people to fill time slots between 6 a.m. and 8 p.m. on
these days at various locations throughout the downtown
and northwest side of Chicago. Tax deductible donations
are also welcomed. Would you be willing to help us in
some way to ensure the success of this very important
fundraiser?
Please call Sr. Florine at (773) 545-8300 or stop by St.
Mary of Providence at 4200 North Austin Avenue,
Chicago, IL 60634 to sign up.
Thanks in advance for your help.

Mass Intentions
by Paul Turner
According to an old tradition, Catholics may offer a
contribution to a priest and request an intention for a
particular Mass (canon 945–946). This custom
invites the faithful into a deeper celebration of the
Eucharist by uniting their sacrifice with that of
Christ. It also helps compensate the church’s minister for his work. Because of this latter reason, the
contribution is called a “stipend.” In affluent countries the
stipend is inadequate and the priest receives a salary. In
poor countries priests cannot support themselves without
the Mass stipend.
For a while, the custom sustained the belief that a Mass
could hold a primary intention and that the priest could
control the blessings of a Mass in a specific way. Recent
statements from Rome have not reinforced that thinking,
however. Rather, the priest accepts the offerings for Mass
“according to particular intentions.” God directs the fruits
of the Mass, which are infinite and universal, according to
the devotion of the faithful.
In the past, the priest could accept only one intention per
Mass. Now he may accept several intentions for the same
Mass once or twice a week if the donors are aware
and agree (Congregation for the Clergy, Mos
iugiter, 1991). Because the custom promotes the
active participation of the faithful, the Mass intention makes more sense if the donor is actually present for the Mass.
Most parishes keep a record of Mass intentions in the
office or sacristy and they are commonly published in the
bulletin and announced at the Masses. When doing so, it is
more accurate to say, “We remember this person in a special way at this Mass,” than to say in a restrictive sense,
“This Mass is offered for this person.” The Mass is offered
for all.
