THE 1966 PALOMAR SUPERNOVA SEARCH F. ZWICKY Mount
THE 1966 PALOMAR SUPERNOVA SEARCH F. ZWICKY Mount Wilson and Palomar Observatories Carnegie Institution of Washington California Institute of Technology Received June 6,1967 Results of the 1966 Search Ten supernovae were found with the Palomar telescopes in 1966. They are listed in Table I and shown on Plate 1. The scale of all the photographs is the same as that indicated on No. 1, except No. 7 which is different and is marked separately. Estimates of the apparent magnitudes of the supernovae and of the parent galaxies were made by the various observers. Galaxy types in the fourth column were estimated from 48-inch Schmidt plates. The tenth column contains the estimated magnitudes of the supemovae for the dates shown. They are not magnitudes at maximum brightness, although some of the supernovae must have been near maximum when found, since many fields were photographed once a month. The eleventh column identifies the first observer, Κ = Kowal, R = Reaves, Ru = Rudnicki. The next to the last column gives the number of the supernova in my master list of all supernovae discovered since 1885 (Zwicky 1958, 1964). No. 4 was discovered independently by M. Lovas at the Konkoly Observatory, Budapest, Hungary. No. 7 was discovered on the Sky Survey Plate No. 1244 when compared with 18-inch Schmidt film in the preparation of Vol. 6 of the Catalogue of Galaxies and of Clusters of Galaxies. As in the past ( see Zwicky 1966 ), the Palomar search has been supported in part by a grant from the National Science Foundation in Washington, D. C. This search forms a part of the international cooperation among a dozen observatories in various countries of both hemispheres which has been organized by the Committee for Research on Supemovae of Commission 28 of the I AU. It may be remarked in parentheses that the members of the Committee have been very active during the year in reducing many of the available 456 © Astronomical Society of the Pacific · Provided by the NASA Astrophysics Data System 7 '8 C x** î --- · <- φ · # # -t · , ·9 ■ ■.· · ■ 40 m '-m ■·; '■ - ♦ ν # " -r ·PLATE I Photographs of supemovae found in 1966.
