It was remarkable cause of hazard for environment and for the people because of high concentration of methane and carbon dioxide in the gases. Mathematical description of this process – occurring through untight, closed down shaft having proper contact area with goafs – has been presented in this article. The model is based on system of two differential non-linear equations with assumption of the absence of heat exchange and with the presence of aerodynamic resistance as lumped resistance for considered shaft. “Wyplyw v.1,0” – software has been created to obtain the solution for the system of the equations. A lot of measurements of volume flow have been performed to take verification of the model. Volume flow of outflowing mine gases was being measured through gaps of concrete plate covering liquidated “Jerzy”. The shaft is located in the area of abandoned “Zabrze” coal mine. The measurements were being conducted in pseudo-continous way, it means the results were being taken every hour during pressure drops. Proposed model is correct description for this phenomenon. Keywords: carbon dioxide, mine gas emission, abandoned mine, mathematical model. Program powstał w języku Delphi i został oparty o przykłady dołączone do książki „Metody numeryczne w Delphi 4”. Przy napisaniu programu pomogli dr inż. J. Krawczyk oraz mgr inż. T. Zbrożek. Do rozwiązania układu równań różniczkowych, nieliniowych zastosowano metodę Rungego-Kutty o zmiennym rzędzie. Program wykorzystuje prosty algorytm (rys. Pomiary prowadzone były w sposób quasi-ciągły, tj. w odstępach godzinnych w czasie trwających zniżek barycznych po uszczelnieniu płyty i pozostawieniu jedynie otworu zastępczego nad otworem o stwierdzonej wcześniej największej prędkości wypływających gazów. Introduction Problems concern a coal mine and its influence on the environment doesn’t stop after mine close down. Gas emission from abandoned mine, mine wastes and subsiding troughs are real hazard for the atmosphere and the people. Gas emission has been noticed 91 in every coal basin in Europe (Card, 1995; Eicker, 1987; Kral & Medak, 1999; Kotarba, 2002; Sulkowski et al., 2004; Szlazak et al., 2001). Abandoned shafts, drifts, gaps and faults could be considered as possible paths of gas migration. The kinds of gas flow: – diffusive – caused by gas concentration gradient occurring between different elements of coal matrix (Kulczycki & Grzybek, 1999), – filter – through porous medium – caused by gases pressure balancing in the gaps, being the system of communicating vessels. Flow to the surface is the effect of pressure difference, – convective – caused by buoyancy, including different density of gases in underground conditions (Bystroń, 2000), – hydraulic (one-dimensional) – taking place in empty excavations, drilling holes and gaps having connection with the surface which are under influence of external forces (atmospheric pressure changes and underground water uplifting) (Branny, 2003; Krach, 2004). Hydraulic flow is discussed in this article. The kind and intensity of the out flow depend on: pressure changes, permeability of filling layers in abandoned excavations and shafts, permeability of rock mass near the shafts, pressure distribution in underground areas and on actual level of underground water. Regarding neighborhood of other coal mines in area of Upper Silesia, and necessity of underground water pumping, this factor could be neglected. Gas migration creates hazard which is temporary but several years lasting. Danger components of mine gas: – methane, – causing explosive hazard above value of LEL equals 5%vol. in mixture with the air, – carbon dioxide, – causing suffocative hazard above concentration of 1% vol. and toxic hazard above concentration of 8-10%vol. (the effect of hypercapnia). 2. Mathematical model The model (fig. 1) of gas out flow from abandoned coal mine through untight shaft has been based on the system of two differential, non-linear equations, describing non-state air flow in mine ventilation net (Bystron, 1973; Dziurzynski & Trutwin, 1978; Tracz, 1987), in its detailed case – air flow caused by turning on a ventilation fan (Krawczyk, 1993). Difference of pressure caused by a fan is replaced by atmospheric pressure changes in selected time. Difference is assumed between the atmosphere and established volume of underground gases. Real system of a shaft and goafs has been replaced by the system of lumped constants. Inertia and compressibility of the flow have been characterized by acoustic mass β (Wacławik et al.,1983; Trutwin, 1968) and acoustic volume (flexibility) CAK (Kopec, 1974; Trutwin, 1968). 92 Out flow pathm Rplate p pz Rshaft V, pz, Cak Fig. 1. The value Q1 from (3) (at the inlet) is incomparable small in comparison to value of Q2, (at the outlet) and it allowed to avoid it in (5), (it’s assumed that velocity of gases in this point of gasholder equals almost zero) (Dziurzyński & Krach, 2001, Prandtl, 1956). Density ρZ has been assumed as constant and pz has been assumed as constant in every point of a gasholder for one iteration. Other assumptions: isothermal process, difference between temperatures of air and underground gases avoided, isothermal process. Assumption of the parameters was found very difficult – the depth of the shaft, crosssectional area of the shaft, volume of the gasholder, primary pressure of underground gases, shaft resistance and most of all – resistance of the plate covering the shaft. Having so many unknown values, which are rather impossible to find using measuring methods in this case (goafs), they have been established basing only on volume flow measurements. Values taken to calculations have been averaged among possible parameters, discussed in literature. Resistance of the plate has been assumed regarding analysis of possible mining dams resistance (Drenda, 1980; Dziurowicz, 1979). 3. Verification of the model 3.1. The programme To solve the equations (5) programme „Wyplyw” v.1,0 has been created using Delphi (the authors: Krawczyk J., Wrona P., Zbrożek T.). It is possible to calculate volume flow of gas Q starting from primary value Q0, for pressure changing every hour. 94 The programme is based on examples attached in the book – “Metody numeryczne w Delphi 4” (Baron et al., 1999) and other literature (Dziurzyński & Krawczyk, 2001). Attached libraries have been applied, too. Runge-Kutty’s method with variable category has been used to solve the equations (5). Next iterations are performed for dropping pressure. Pressure drop is defined by a user. (fig. 2, tab. 1). Application of function TRunge-Kutty in prototype TRoRoNl allows to set numeration of an iteration, read out as initial condition, what enables to continue calculations starting from any, previously calculated iteration. Lack of next value of pressure is read as the end of calculations. It is assumed that calculations could be performed only for dropping pressure. Graphical interpretation of flow changes is applied in the programme. Arranged in steps, diagram Q is the result of pressure changes for every hour. It is possible to smooth out the diagram by taking pressure values more often what should lead to increase the number of iterations. The curve of Q for the first hour is different than for the others, that is the result of next simplification – lack of difference between patm and pz for initial conditions. As it was mentioned, thise simplifications obviously influences on the result, but there were no possibility to obtain value of pz by measurements in this case. The window of the programme is divided into sections: data (β, CAK, Rp, Rs), changes of atmospheric pressure, graphical (the diagram of Q) and final result QL. Actual data is Data Start Is the drop of athm pressure? yes dQ 2 2 dt p z (t ) pa (t ) Rshaft Q R plate Q C dpz Q AK dt RESULT = QL , pz modification of pz Q L = Q o + Qi Is the drop of athm pressure? no Result Fig. 2. After staring up the programme again, these data are read out from the register. 3.2. Measuring position Measurements have been conducted at the plate covering abandoned “Jerzy” shaft. The shaft has been deepen in 1870 and closed down before 1956. Total depth was 286 m. Now it is located within area of “Semag” company, in the city of Zabrze. The plate is very cracked and there are many holes and gapes. Two significant holes could be observed in the plate. (fig. 3a). There are no flap and chimney for gases outlet. a) b) Fig. 3. a) One of the significant holes in the plate of “Jerzy” shaft. Widoczna jest obudowa szybu i stalowy dźwigar; b) Pomiar prędkości wypływających gazów kopalnianych. Na zdjęciu widoczny otwór wylotowy w konstrukcji pomiarowej 3.3. Methodics Measurements have been based on Polish Standard PN-ISO 10396 “Emission from stationary sources. Sampling for automatic gas concentration measurement”. To conduct the measurements, the plate has been sealed up with sand, clay, foil and one significant hole has been left permeable. Special outlet has been mounted above the hole (fig. 3b). Next, using anemometers μAS and Lambrecht, gas velocity were being measured every hour. Using digital barometer DB-2 connected to PC, pressure changes were being recorded. Gas analyzer AUER ACO2 has been used to measure concentration of CO2 in mine gases. During previous measurements, using Lancom II no other gas had been detected, (including methane). Measured and calculated results have been set in tab.1 for two selected pressure drops. During 13.10.2004 value of initial volume flow Q0 was 21,02 m3/min, and final value was Qm 32,28 m3/min (after ten hours of drop). Final value of Q = 17,35 m3/min has been obtained by calculations. This value has been added to Q0 and final calculated result was QL = 38,37 m3/min. Deviation QL in comparison to Qm, during ten hours was +6,17 m3/min, what gave deviation only +0,62 m3/min for one hour. During 18.01.2005 value of initial volume flow Q0 was 79,97 m3/min, and final value was 101,77m3/min (after nine hours). Final value of Q = 24,10 m3/min has been obtained by calculations. This value has been added to Q0 and final calculated result was QL = 104,07 m3/min. Deviation QL in comparison to Qm, during nine hours was +3,00 m3/min, what gave deviation only +0,33 m3/min for one hour. Volume flow calculations with application of Wyplyw v.1.0 give comparable results with measurements which have been conducted at “Jerzy” shaft. Differences are caused by measuring errors and parameters assumption. 4. Carbon dioxide emission from abandoned, untight shaft Carbon dioxide measurements showed that concentration increase could rise from 0,03%vol. to even 16,6%vol. during one drop (case from 17.04.2005 h.10:00 one-week pressure drop). Basing on analysis of barograms from 2003 and 2004 and on S. Wasilewski’s article (Wasilewski, 2004), it was assumed that there are about 40 pressure drops 3,5 days long for year what led to conclusion that there are 140 drop days for year. Considering results of measurements average maximal value of volume flow has been established is 62,78 m3/min for one pressure drop. Value of 31,39 m3/min is average value. Average concentration of CO2 is about 8,0%vol. what gives QCO2=2,5 m3/min = 3600m3/day. Estimated CO2 emission – 3600 m3/dzień*140 dni = 504000 m3CO2/rok (988 Mg/rok). For CO2 concentration equals 4,0% value of emission is 252000 m3CO2/rok (494 Mg/rok). It can not be claimed, that „Jerzy” shaft is the only source of the gas from abandoned mine in Zabrze. Average emission of CO2 from typical Silesian mine is 1265g/s = 39770 Mg/year (Zgadzaj, 1997). Estimated CO2 emission from “Jerzy shaft” is about 2,5% of CO2 emission from working coal mine. This source should be documented. 98 5. Conclusions 1. Coal mine close down gives loss of ventilation influence on underground gasholders what leads to gas migration to the surface. Atmospheric pressure changes are major cause of this process, considering a mine which is not flooded. 2. Hydraulic out flow of mine gases from underground gasholder to the atmosphere could be described by system of two differential, non-linear equations (5), with lumped constants representing physical properties of the gasholder and untight shaft. 3. “Wyplyw v.1.0” programme allows to solve the system of equations (5) and to calculate volume flow Q for out flowing gases for every iteration representing pressure drop. 4. Measured and calculated results comparison is satisfactory, in spite of estimated parameters of the gasholder and the shaft. 5. CO2 measurements indicate that “Jerzy” shaft should be documented source of this gas emission to atmosphere because CO2 emission could be about 988 Mg/year.
