The film is the documentation of a performance by the artist realised during the opening of the exhibition Bicycle Club in the Kordegarda Gallery. Robert Kuśmirowski, an author of sculptures, installations and actions, this time took on the persona of a cyclist who must travel a distance measured not in metres or kilometres, but in units of time. What is more, the effort made is not connected with an amount of movement proportional to it. On the contrary, the bicycle is fixed to a stand and the pedals and wheels turn on the spot. Does the work say something about the artist? Do you have to watch the whole film? Are the tasks performed hard work? Paweł Kruk, Większy niż życie / Lar Larger than Life, 2000, 9‘3 9‘3’’ Praca dyplomowa Pawła Kruka, który na potrzeby filmu „pożycza” tożsamość znanego koszykarza Michaela Jordana. Oryginalny tytuł filmu: Larger than Life oznacza kogoś heroicznego, niespotykanego, wręcz nierzeczywistego. Paweł Kruk’s degree work in which, for the purpose of the film, the artist ‘borrows’ the identity of the famous basketball player Michael Jordan. Kruk carefully repeats his gestures, mimicry, words taken from interviews, his way of answering questions, to in the end completely identify with him. As Jordan, he becomes a fulfilled person, gladly taking on challenges, a born winner. The film’s original title, Larger than Life indicates someone heroic, untouchable, even unreal. After watching the work, do you know who the author is? Where does the boundary lie between playing a role and becoming somebody different? In everyday life, do we often attempt to become someone different from the person we are? Katarzyna Kozyra, Kwadrans / A Quarter of an Hour, 20042004-2005, 28’8’’ (A Quarter of an Hour 12’43’’(recording of a performance), Singing Lesson, 6’32’’, Fascination with Gloria, 5’28’’ Grand Piano in Trento, 4’25’’) From the cycle In Art Dreams Come True — a project realized in 2003, comprised of a series of performances, para-theatrical events, happenings involving the public and films. In them, Kozyra is a substance in the hands of her master/guides: Gloria Viagra, a Berlin drag queen who teaches the artist how to be a real woman, and Maestro Grzegorz Pitułej from whom Kozyra takes singing lessons. The work A Quarter of an Hour is the recording of a performance of a meeting of a private nature (albeit taking place on a stage) between the artist and Maestro to which a public was admitted. At the same time, on a second level it was possible to watch earlier works by Katarzyna Kozyra that were made at different stages of the project and acted as a background for the performance. Singing Lesson presents the relations between the artist and Maestro: from mutual fascination, to unwillingness and antagonism emerging from a situation reminiscent of the relations between a torturer and his victim. In Fascination with Gloria Viagra, the artist, together with Maestro, followed the singer returning from a concert. The final work, Grand Piano in Trento is a recording of one of the artist’s dreams. Are there certain signs or instructions for a viewer hidden in a work of art? Can you see any references to other cultures or works of art? Do dreams come true in art? After watching the work, do you know who the artist is? Do the works tell us something about the artist herself?
